Driving Tesla through Yellowstone

Present-Light4281 | 2026-02-14 10:39 | 38 views

Hello! I am planning a trip out west. I’ve been mapping the trip out, the only leg of the trip I’m a bit nervous about is traveling through Yellowstone. There are only level 2 chargers in the park, but super charger in west Yellowstone. Looking for advice for anyone that has done this trip. Thanks so much

Looking at doing the same thing. +1

I have done this trip in my 2017 Model S 75D without a problem. I stayed near the north entrance and went through the park. The speeds are low enough that you really not going to use a lot of energy. We stopped often to see the sites. Later in the day we super charged at West Yellowstone and drove back to the north entrance. Was able to plug into a 110 outlet at the hotel . Drove through the other half of the park the next day and repeated the supercharger at the west entrance. Never charged more than 80 % and never got close to running low on a charge.

You'll be fine. I've been before and would love to go again in my Y. When I went the first time I used my volt through the mountain pass coming from the east, and it chugged XD that was a steep incline

I went from Los Angeles area to Jackson Hole WY in my MYP 2023. At one point my Tesla navi told me to charge 20 min to get to my next spot however I decided to stay longer and charged double. Instead of arriving at 11% like it originally said, I charged longer and would arrive at 25%. As I drove we had a bad headwind and we arrived at 6% and I was so glad I charged longer. That was my only negative experience on a road trip in my Tesla. It was a long distance between chargers there and I’m thankful I used the better route app and not just the Tesla navi app.

Perfect! Yeah I noticed this morning there is a rivian charger, so I can charge up before my day. I was planning on charging to 100%, any reason not to? I usually do before a long trip

Go for it, doing that the night before is no big deal. I the same when I know I’m going to drive over 150-200 miles.

Driven my Tesla through YNP many times. There is a Rivian fast charger (and another brand) in Gardiner (North entrance). And, as you probably know, Superchargers in West Yellowstone and Jackson. There are free slow chargers in Red Lodge, which are nice if you are getting a meal. The slow chargers in the park are useful sometimes, but I don't like to rely on them.

Just did this in my 2021 dual motor was fine. Charge fully at West yellowstone.

So? Worst case: plan to spend the night in Yellowstone. A 30 Amp Level 2 (at 240v) will add 25 miles per hour. Use this as a reference, see what is available, and decide if you can charge while you are walking around for the day, or if you need to make reservations for the night. Overthinking things will get in the way of having a great time.

My one and only trip there in the Spring of 2021 I was an idiot. Entered the W. Yellowstone entrance with 21%. Got to Old Faithful with 12. Plugshare said there was some L2 chargers there, but we couldn't find them. Of course it was a while ago. Wanted to then drive south straight to Jackson Hole but had to back track to those W Yellowstone chargers getting there with 3%. Don't be like me.

Drive slower helps, I believe it’s only 35mph in the park so following that speed is going to help you with the range as well. I did my camping in canyon site couple years ago. I went out to west entrance to get food and charged to 95%. The car was able to get me through all parts of the park no problem.

A CCS1 adapter is still useful around National Parks out west, it'll let you use Rivian's network and other fast chargers

Ive gone to Yellowstone twice from Denver in my 2021 LR model Y. One trip I left from Jackson hole with about 95% battery. I went counter clock wise on the big circle route in the park and stayed in west yellowstone. It was like 5-6 hours, if not more, of driving. I made it to west yellowstone with plenty of battery. In the park, you average like 30-40mph and get get a lot more range at those speeds. Second trip, I started in west yellowstone, did about 4-5hrs worth of driving and made it back to west yellowstone with plenty of battery.

Thanks for the post. I’m planning to do this in Sept.

I had no problem taking my Y LR into the park for day excursions and then the last day of the trip went all the way out through the Tetons exit. Another commenter is right about speed, you're always going slow enough to never have the kind of range reduction you get from highway speeds and with the slow speed and amount of stopping you will be doing you should be fine The West Yellowstone charger is my favorite charger location of 100+ I've visited. It is in the parking lot of a bear, wolf, and raptor rehab / sanctuary place and they sell multi day passes, we just looked at the animals while the car charged every morning! If you have Starlink Mini I highly recommend mounting it inside your car, having service through the whole park was super convenient, largely because the map satellite imagery loads even without cell reception, which there isn't really, and *every* parking area is marked on the map and you can tap to preview what is there before deciding to stop! Also the satellite imagery was generally detailed enough we could see when there were going to be pullouts to let any traffic behind us by so we could go slow but still be polite to others.

Went last year. I stayed at various lodges in the park and some of these chargers are harder to find but all free L2. Lake lodge you had to get security escort as the charger is at the employee housing and not walkable. They drive you back to your cabin. https://www.yellowstonenationalparklodges.com/connect/yellowstone-hot-spot/ev-travel-in-yellowstone/

We drove from SoCal to Yellowstone in 2022 in a 2018 Tesla Model 3. Absolutely no problems with range/charging in June. We charged every morning at the Supercharger outside the west entrance and had more than enough to make it to every destination without needing Level 2 charging within the park. The speed limits are 50 mph or lower within the park so the drives were relatively efficient.

Went there last year. Stayed at Holiday Inn in West Yellowstone which has a couple level 2 Tesla chargers. Didn’t even need to use the supercharger for our days at the park. Plugged in every night after we got back.
