I don't know your age but if fairly young this will become a well rooted memory you will never forget. I am pleased you are taking this so well. Now you get to find out how the insurance process works. Your vehicle will cosmetically and structurally be brought back to the before condition but you may not like hearing it could take 30 days (best case) to 90 days (worst case). Thanks, it was my first "crash", we had to wait like 4 hours for a crane because it was far away from anywhere. It was my mistake to overshoot the braking distance, it was very icy on top. Was not even fast speed (50kmh/30mph), I've driving on horrible icy conditions for 10 years without issues, I'm not sure the regen had something to do, everything was just so stupid (the feeling of "if I just had... 5 minutes ago", but of course time machines aren't real) and as you say now is the phase to learn how insurance works. Car looks surprisingly fine and works fine.

I think youre totaly fine, just cosmetic damage inless there was some frozen ice chunks that might scratch the bottom and cause rusting, check and rustproof or any leaks into the battery. I would have it lifted for a good inspection.

Sorry this happened to you and I hope you'll get her fixed back up soon. But it really goes to show no matter how much you prepare for winter driving (snow tires, AWD, etc.), once your car hits a patch of black ice, it really doesn't matter and momentum will determine how you will stop. In Ontario, spikes/chains are not allowed but snow tires are pretty much a given for winter driving. And with snow tires, the Model Y feels very planted. So thanks to your post, I will still make sure I keep my speed in check when there's snow and possible icy conditions on the roads.

I don't know if you have "felt" when the car detects slippery conditions, like the first roundabout and starts behaving differently. But to be honest it is my fault for driving out of the path :/

Sorry, I wasn't suggesting snow tires alone should be enough... I should have said the Model Y feels very planted with snow tires and perhaps giving a false sense of the bad road condition. Which is all to say I should remind myself to always drive to the condition of the road, and not by how well the car feels and handles.

No, I've been driving Tesla's exclusively since March 2015. There are ingrained driver skills that need to be adjusted from a driving skill standpoint. Regen is one of them. The concept seems so cut-and-dried on the surface but the reality is that when an EV slows down using the brake regeneration programming the human driver becomes a *little* less able to control the action of the vehicle. It is like the lifetime accumulated skill of manual braking has been removed from the realm of possibility. Having said that, depending on what Tesla model and year you have, there is a possible setting that enables reducing the amount of brake regen. After reading this post I am reminded to investigate my 2026 Model Y reduced regen braking possibilities. By the way, my previous reference to Tesla FSD becoming more perfectly attuned to driving with less traction is something I have given some thought to. It all comes down to a more complete understanding of both the weather conditions as well as the map data. I do not know how well the map data accounts for elevation change but in the case of this poster I gathered an elevation change accounted for some portion of the accident. Then in combination with the slippery road condition and ordinary brake regen he basically lost manual control of his vehicle.

So true. I totalled my favorite Accord when I was 29 and it still haunts me. I saw it over and over in my head and regretted my driving decision (I swerved). No one else was with me and I was so lucky that no one was coming from the opposite direction. I still have debilitating PTSD from it and it's the main reason I bought my Y.

The OP was driving *and* brake regen was possibly (maybe likely) active. As I already stated EV brake regen is an easy concept to understand but driving with it is different than driving an ICEV with a transmission. Unless you've driven both platforms extensively you are likely lacking the RW understanding of the differences. And your reply brought another memory to mind. My second accident happened because I downshifted my 69 Camaro in 1972 at 60 mph on a heavy snow and iced Interstate. I was ignorant and young. I simply didn't know better. I didn't have the necessary skill. I immediately spun a 360 and plowed into a guardrail in a single car accident.

Yeah and without the light from the camera flash, due the color of the car you can't even tell it was damaged. When the crane took it out, at first, it looked intact. But I guess this is gonna take several months to fix 😔 and my deductible is 875 (including the crane service) plus loss of bonus
