The most dangerous button inside of a car wash.

CYB3RTRUNK | 2026-02-13 16:14 | 486 views

I understand this makes sense for handwash stations but imagine accidentally pressing this inside the car wash while it's active.

A confirmation prompt would be such an easy fix to retain this button without the risk.

Ok_Jacket_2391 2026-02-13 16:31

Respectfully but are you touching about on that screen during a Carwash? It really shouldn’t be such a dangerous issue.

DragonforceTexas 2026-02-13 16:46

using that logic it's ok to have a button that makes the car explode when pressed. just don't touch it!

sevargmas 2026-02-13 17:22

To be fair, why is that button even there in car wash mode? It seems like if you want to open the trunk, you would no longer want to be in car wash mode.

ObeseSnake 2026-02-13 17:23

But what if it’s shiny and red?

Ok_Enthusiasm_2574 2026-02-13 17:24

What's so dangerous about the seat ejection button? Just don't press it bro.

bioteq 2026-02-13 17:36

i would argue the app button is worse, I’ve accidentally opened my trunk a dozen times straight into my wall… fortunately padded wall.

Ok_Jacket_2391 2026-02-13 17:37

I mean if you don’t want your car to explode, you wouldn’t press it right? Yes mistakes could happen but really you don’t have a need to press about during a car wash. You can wipe down or press another app like Spotify. Once you go above a certain speed Carwash mode turns off automatically anyways.

RealPropRandy 2026-02-13 17:37

That button should play the sound effect of JK Simmons laughing out loud “you’re serious?”, then not actually open the trunk until you press it a second time.

Ok_Cake1283 2026-02-13 17:39

Because the button is now forbidden so I want to press it more than ever

Shuler13 2026-02-13 17:40

How could you press it "accidentally"? Like you really need to reach to the screen in order to press it.

Adorable-Boat8632 2026-02-13 17:41

I use it all the time after a wash to let all the water run down

Idc94 2026-02-13 17:43

When you hand wash/dry it’s very common to open the doors to dry the jams. That’s my guess

Alarming_Squash_3731 2026-02-13 17:45

Going through the auto car wash is now the most stressful thing ever. Especially exiting at the end of the- F1 drivers launch control got nothing on ‘press brake then shift to D to exit’ while the car behind is inching towards you

Away-Scar7754 2026-02-13 17:48

🙈

Brief-Cod2037 2026-02-13 17:54

Yes but doesn't that come after the car wash is completed its washing? I imagine seeing a person jump out of the car mid automatic was and pushing the trunk button to dry the door jams...lol

CompleteGene82 2026-02-13 17:55

And accidentally presses the trunk open button! Has anybody tried it yet?

ihateduckface 2026-02-13 18:09

Water run down?

Megatron_is_my_dog 2026-02-13 18:11

Some people wash their car by hand….

Adorable-Boat8632 2026-02-13 18:11

Yeah after a wash I open it and let the water run down from the lift gate

rwhe83 2026-02-13 18:12

Yes, and this has come up on these subs entirely too much since they updated this months ago. Can we stop bringing it up?

iceverge 2026-02-13 18:21

Do you need a special mode to wash the car by hand?

lowspeed 2026-02-13 18:23

You can remove it.

SnooWoofers7345 2026-02-13 18:24

That damn chargeport keeps opening when I touch it yeah.

Megatron_is_my_dog 2026-02-13 18:27

Id like my automatic wipers to be off, my charge port to stay closed and when im cleaning my displays its nice to lock them….. so yeah

sevargmas 2026-02-13 18:39

The wipers don’t turn on when you wash your car at home. Just like they don’t turn on when your car is sitting in the driveway and it’s raining. Trust me I wash two Teslas probably once a month in my driveway for three years. Yes, the charging port opens sometimes. It doesn’t interrupt washing. It just closes itself in a few seconds. I don’t know what display lock has to do with anything. Car wash mode doesn’t lock your display. There’s a separate screen lock specifically for cleaning the screen.

sevargmas 2026-02-13 18:40

How many times are you cleaning the charge port door. The touchpad is in the bottom corner so you just wash from top to bottom and you’re done. If it opens, it will close by itself in a few seconds. It’s more trouble to go through the hassle of putting your car in car wash mode

saltybiped 2026-02-13 18:47

Do it then

Famous_Ad7312 2026-02-13 18:49

Somebody please join the conversation who used this button during a wash!

SP3NGL3R 2026-02-13 18:51

Mine opens tapping anywhere. Super easy to open by accident.

MoistMonarch 2026-02-13 18:51

skill issue lmao

SP3NGL3R 2026-02-13 18:52

I tried recently to customize those buttons. I can't find it now. Maybe because it was in service mode at the time and I was bored.

ImperfectDrug 2026-02-13 18:56

Right, but then why couldn't you just open the trunk from the physical button while standing right behind the car? I just don't a scenario where this button makes any sense.

ImperfectDrug 2026-02-13 18:58

Press and hold until they jiggle, then drag.

ImperfectDrug 2026-02-13 19:00

After. So you could do this once you've exited carwash mode, right?

scott2626 2026-02-13 19:00

Because if I stare at it long enough I might have to purposefully accidentally touch it to see if it really does open the trunk.

QuickSteak_1715 2026-02-13 19:01

I mean, this button ain’t relaxing for people with intrusive thoughts Lol

GfunkWarrior28 2026-02-13 19:04

It's useful if you're trapped in a front end car wreck and u accidentally pressed car wash mode but need to get out. Can't think of any other situation.

Adorable-Boat8632 2026-02-13 19:04

You can but I like leaving the car on car wash mode so the charge port won’t open during hand drying

Fresh-Ad-4556 2026-02-13 19:10

Lol

SteveLangfordsCock 2026-02-13 19:12

If you open it you can wash the inside and the outside at the same time.

mrdirectnl 2026-02-13 19:26

Then open it via the trunk?? From the outside. This button should not be there ! Period.

SP3NGL3R 2026-02-13 19:30

Ah. On Android they don't jiggle but you do have to hold a really long time compared to other long-press things. Thanks

Pitiful-Art-423 2026-02-13 19:41

Because an auto-wash can malfunction and exiting through the hatch may be the option after that happens. It's the same as being able to push a door button to exit whilst in the car wash.

SuckaB 2026-02-13 19:45

Challenge accepted!

incensenonsense 2026-02-13 19:50

Exactly this. Sure, hand washers want to be able to open the trunk while washing, but they won’t go sit in the driver seat to do that.

ifdefmoose 2026-02-13 19:53

It must be jelly ‘cause jams don’t dry like that.

Idc94 2026-02-13 19:54

Carwash mode disables the physical button

TheJoeBold 2026-02-13 19:55

DO IT!

bioteq 2026-02-13 19:58

Thank you! I actually never modified it.

bioteq 2026-02-13 19:59

Absolutely 🫣🤣

Fore_putt 2026-02-13 20:15

The issue here isn’t the button. It’s that you are using a scratch-o-matic on your car.

Big_Fox_8383 2026-02-13 20:23

Yes but explain to me the scenario where having that button present is helpful when hand washing. It’s inside the car, you are outside the car. This button only serves to potentially create a problem.

Jared_Sparks 2026-02-13 20:25

You're not going to believe this, but I just came back from the car wash and while I was in the soft touch wash, I decided to clean the screen. Somehow, it switched back to regular screen and I opened the frunk during the wash. I freaked out. It popped up but only slightly. Never doing that again.

Intelligent_Rub7502 2026-02-13 20:26

lol I saw exactly the same thing and wondered the same thing while going through the car wash today.

sevargmas 2026-02-13 20:27

That is a super fringe scenario. And you can just take the car out of car wash mode or put it in park and open the trunk like you would any other time.

cjh6793 2026-02-13 20:39

It's not a collectable and most people don't care about swirled paint.

Pitiful-Art-423 2026-02-13 20:41

Super fringe has nothing to do with it. It's like insurance for someone who only drives 3k miles per year. They still buy full insurance. Because...IT'S INSURANCE! LOL Even if that is a fringe scenario, there are others. Like opening the hatch to wipe the sill, hatch glass, or get cleaning supplies before you're ready to take it out of car wash mode. (Which would be an extra step in your scenario). Someone asked why, and I shared an answer.

darksplit 2026-02-13 21:04

“Let me clean the screen while I’m in the car wash…”

desichidiya 2026-02-13 21:09

It’s a TEST! DON’T DO IT!

LayerProfessional936 2026-02-13 21:12

What is this ‘automatic car wash’ thing doing? Just release the brakes?

Pretend-Reality5431 2026-02-13 21:20

I was actually tempted today. Was deciding whether to Fold the mirrors, then stared at the Open Trunk button. Did neither. I was too exhausted thinking about putting the car into Car wash mode/then in Neutral. Everything worked out OK.

Ldydraak 2026-02-13 21:28

Interesting. I thought with how sensitive the paint was we were advised to avoid car washes? (New tesla owner)

SageJim 2026-02-13 21:30

Just turned off the auto open for the rear truck. Every time I used the foaming brush at the car wash, it would open. Grrr.

baseballandfreedom 2026-02-13 21:37

Is this paint still wet? Yep.

loveheaddit 2026-02-13 21:37

was cleaning my car today and was looking at that wondering why that is even an option on here lol

Dry_Situation_3582 2026-02-13 21:42

👋👋👋 Ha! I accidentally hit it in the car wash a few days ago and heard a click but nothing happened. It made me think there's more to it, Idk.

Dry_Situation_3582 2026-02-13 21:45

I'm sorry it's so stressful for you.

Dry_Situation_3582 2026-02-13 21:45

I did a few days ago.

notregisteredhere 2026-02-13 21:49

I don't use the car wash mode. I fold the mirrors and go into neutral. At the exit I lightly touch the brakes and go into drive. Or I just coast out of the exit as it has a slight downhill.

Famous_Ad7312 2026-02-13 21:54

🤣🤣🤣

ImperfectDrug 2026-02-13 22:03

I did not know that. Again, I guess I just never have a need to open the trunk after entering car-wash mode.

jwegener 2026-02-13 22:05

That entire car wash feature terrifies me. It's stressful to turn on, unclear what the instructions on bottom mean (shift to d and press brake??) and unclear if it's for a moving automatic car wash or a hose wash at home

GucciTokes 2026-02-13 22:10

same for the shortcut on the home screen of the Tesla app while you’re parked in your home garage.. i’ve only tapped it by accident one single time throughout my ownership and thankfully i tapped it again and it didn’t open 😅😅😅

RempGG 2026-02-13 22:19

They should have a confirm action if the button is pressed

Difficult-Text8042 2026-02-13 22:31

I use car wash mode when washing by had. It opens the mirrors, and I think it keeps the phone from turning the car off / on as your moving around.

scott2626 2026-02-13 22:35

Yeap!!

ID157 2026-02-13 22:58

I think now you can set by location how high the hatch will open, similar to folding in the mirrors based on location

SnooWoofers7345 2026-02-13 23:04

It opens when i hit it with a pressure washer or whatever you call it in English. Those hoses that spray water at car washes where you do it yourself. So annoying. So yeah i have to put it in car wash mode

TheMidwest1 2026-02-13 23:16

🙋‍♂️

cjh6793 2026-02-13 23:23

I said most, not u/TheMidwest1

cheapdvds 2026-02-13 23:35

If it's mechanical lift gate, you can hit it again to cancel it assuming if it even works.

TrickOrange 2026-02-13 23:49

Terrifies you? 🤨

fixthings 2026-02-13 23:51

Don’t touch the screen while you’re in the car wash once you’ve enabled free roll. Easy fix

dw-c137 2026-02-13 23:54

That's a good deal in this economy!

jwegener 2026-02-13 23:57

Yes! I pull into an automatic car wash, there’s a line of ppl behind me waiting impatiently, someone motioning me to pull up and guiding me into the tracks, and I freeze and cannot for the life of me remember how to activate or use the car wash feature hahahah

PositivelyNegative 2026-02-14 00:06

That’s actually hilarious placement

sevargmas 2026-02-14 00:17

The thing I find more problematic is the auto-open on the trunk when I'm washing my car. I start washing the rear hatch and the beeping starts, to indicate it's going to open.

kfmaster 2026-02-14 00:33

Click on it, and it should respond, “I’m kidding.” All the other responses are disastrous.

GlitteryStranger 2026-02-14 00:38

I’ve had a Tesla since 2019 and never used this mode.

Dry_Situation_3582 2026-02-14 01:09

I meant to hit the mirror fold button and accidentally touched open trunk. I heard a click noise but it didn't open. I checked it after I left the wash andit was still closed up tight.

Maconi 2026-02-14 01:13

RIP your charge port door (someday).

Maconi 2026-02-14 01:15

Every car has to do that though? You can leave it in Car Wash Mode until you drive off/park. Just Brake + Shift to Drive to get out of Neutral once you’re off the belt.

GucciTokes 2026-02-14 01:17

mine’s a ‘21.. so maybe, maybe not 🤷🏼‍♂️ i’m not sure honestly

Alarming_Squash_3731 2026-02-14 01:21

Easy for you to say

ID157 2026-02-14 01:31

https://www.tesla.com/ownersmanual/model3/en_eu/GUID-3667D28B-5B3B-49CE-A1C1-3D70AC60D9F6.html

TheMidwest1 2026-02-14 01:32

lol sorry. I meant that I am one who does not care about swirled paint!

Nofunsciatica 2026-02-14 01:44

Same!! I had a line behind me and it would not go into that “free roll” mode. Even though it was in car wash mode. I had to back up, put it back in N and then finally the free roll worked. I rolled through the wash but it did not wash the car. Apparently I tripped something in the car wash so it do not work and they had to stop it and reset it. I’m. Sure everyone was loving me. So I left with a dirty car and went to one of those old fashioned car washes with the spray hoses you use yourself. Much less stressful. And the basic gray color gets very dirty very easily IMO!

theshitstormcommeth 2026-02-14 01:49

Who’s licking their screens during a drive through car wash?

Taylooor 2026-02-14 02:15

JK “Just Kidding” Simmons

Different_Push1727 2026-02-14 02:22

Literally just close the app on your phone and keep the car locked. Done.

Different_Push1727 2026-02-14 02:23

I don’t think I can lower the seats from the i side of a Model Y juniper. I haven’t found a button other than the one inside the trunk.

b1worc 2026-02-14 02:37

I have a Cybertruck and hit the drunk button while cleaning the screen in the car wash. By the time it closed there was a ton of water in it.

Famous_Ad7312 2026-02-14 02:39

🤣 Don't wipe the screen while in the car wash, noted! 🤣

jwegener 2026-02-14 02:59

I totally forget how to put the car in neutral (I have to do it maybe 3x a year max?) and find myself frantically googling it lol

icy1007 2026-02-14 04:44

That would be a funny prompt for an AI video.

icy1007 2026-02-14 04:44

Yes

icy1007 2026-02-14 04:45

My Tesla opens the charge port when pressed at the top.

icy1007 2026-02-14 04:45

Or just use Car Wash Mode…

fjwi9 2026-02-14 05:39

Charge port doesn’t open while car is locked. I also have never used car wash mode. Model 3 since 2018. Never had any issues with using neutral and keeping car locked.

RussianBotProbably 2026-02-14 05:44

It doesn’t. At least on a 2026 juniper. Edit: Yeah you can downvote me…or test it yourself.

nappycappy 2026-02-14 07:11

i get the worry but..... why the hell are you hands anywhere near the screen once you enter car wash mode. like i've taken my car through those auto-washers and the minute it goes into car wash mode, my hands are away from the screen and i just enjoy the pretty soap colors.

SnooWoofers7345 2026-02-14 07:22

Lmao right? I don't know why people are so adamant on trying to convince us not to use car wash mode. Closing the app does not even work it still works, unmess maybe if I turn Bluetooth off? But people really, its chill.

subat0mic 2026-02-14 07:33

Why can't we just disable the "touch the charge port to open it". I can't think that I have ever (ever!) wanted that functionality. And when someone hits my port (kid or grandparents touching randomly) and it opens it's always a surprise. Why? Why would I want it to open by touch alone. Why not like every other car have (exclusively) a button inside the car (or on the phone) to open it, as the only way to do it? The feature no one wanted or needs. And which makes a car wash mode for hand washes really necessary. Odd design decision.

BodaciousGuy 2026-02-14 11:36

They said when you hand wash.

eOMG 2026-02-14 12:46

So a brush could press the button and it opens?

Accomplished-Code-32 2026-02-14 13:16

I seem to always roll up and press the car wash mode, thinking things are cool and inevitably the car doesn’t roll. The pusher rollers bump under my tires in an embarrassing spectacle. I press and toggle buttons, dials and everything I can locate with the ultimate goal of getting the car in neutral. It finally starts rolling and then the windshield wipers start going 1000 mph. Then the mirrors don’t fold in. How do I fold my mirrors in???? Hurry hurry hurry!! It is crazy that I find myself practicing in the neighboring parking lot before heading into the car wash. I can’t seem to ever recall the proper sequence to properly get the car in the proper car wash mode. I also think the car wash system is synchronize with each car based on what level of service you select. I noticed that yesterday when I went through the car wash as normal, I bumped over two pusher rollers at the beginning and that got me off the synchronized wash. The car wash was spraying window foam a few feet out in front of me instead of into my car. The blowers started way early and the green light to exit lite up while I was still being washed. I try to hand wash as much as I can so I don’t have to embarrass myself in front of all those young boys at the car wash. I can hear them laughing at me as my car and I slowly roll through the tunnel of stress!!!!

Macademicz 2026-02-14 13:28

The charge port opens for me all the time when it’s locked. As long as you device is within range and you have proximity lock /unlock on .

Alarming_Squash_3731 2026-02-14 13:31

I had never thought of that

Virtamancer 2026-02-14 13:52

Drunk button indeed. The feature makes sense (allegedly), but the button how it works now is retarded.

Virtamancer 2026-02-14 13:56

Manuals don’t have to do that. The idea of braking at the end is an insane thing that only has to happen in automatics. Instead of that silly button, they could replace it with one that puts you directly into drive (tap twice, or hold a giant button, or literally anything besides braking and switching gears).

theycallmetism 2026-02-14 14:08

When you hand wash and dry, you wouldn’t use car wash mode.

Obbut 2026-02-14 14:16

I actually like this button and use it every time I go to the car wash. I always go to an automatic car wash where after the outside gets washed, you’re supposed to put the car on a giant conveyor belt, open the trunk, and get out. The staff then cleans the entire interior with 4 or 5 people in about 5 to 10 minutes.

Silver_Slicer 2026-02-14 15:48

Spend time before getting to the car wash to do the steps and practice it a few times before heading to the car wash. Just only do it in on a flat area and not on some hill in San Francisco. Lol. I still practice each time just to make sure.

Silver_Slicer 2026-02-14 15:50

Practice first before going to the car wash. It becomes quite easy.

ulmersapiens 2026-02-14 16:37

At which point someone would already be by the trunk, and could just open it. I don’t know why you’d need to open the trunk from the driver seat in car wash mode.

fjwi9 2026-02-14 19:47

That’s only correct when locked from the outside. When locked from the inside, it doesn’t open (same behavior with door handles).

KeithDavisRatio 2026-02-15 01:22

Car Wash Mode is ridiculously complicated and I don’t understand why people use it. For touchless car washes, you don’t even need to do anything. For automatic car washes, just shift to neutral. If you fold mirrors before, it will remember the location and do it every time.

mailman-zero 2026-02-15 01:59

I’m pretty sure that an auto retailer would like the car to be in car wash mode so they have easy access to the controls to open things.

Tasty_Action5073 2026-02-15 02:16

yeah stupid button.

ArtWentBye 2026-02-15 06:29

This entire conversation has been wholesome.

Macademicz 2026-02-15 17:21

I just don’t get how many people find this dangerous, just don’t press it.

Chaos744 2026-02-16 23:54

Your brain would have to be smoother than all the silk in China to hit that button while in a wash.

mja910 2026-02-17 04:50

Check out Rubbit. You'll never use a car wash again. I love it.

Different_Push1727 2026-02-18 17:29

That is also an option. But not the only one. That’s all I’m saying.

johnmsch 2026-02-26 00:27

When I first saw that option appear, all I could thin of was WTF! I do hope whoever put that on there got fired!!!!
