Premium Connectivity required for Apple Music?(not Car Play)

Mr_Illy | 2026-02-12 14:05 | 11 views

Is Premium Connectivity required to have Apple Music? I’ve seen videos where people scan a QR code and then authorize Apple Music to be integrated, but make no mention of a subscription to Premium Connectivity. I’m looking at buying a 2023 LR AWD, but I really want to be able to easily access my music. Note: I edited original post to accurately reflect the model and build.

Car needs internet to access any music app . Premium connectivity is one way to give car internet . You can also use a hot spot or Bluetooth your Apple Music from phone

You need premium connectivity to stream music using the built in apps in the car when not connected to WiFi.

Yes. You need net access. Theoretically you corps very painfully connect your phones hotspot everything you get into the car. (It's not a super quick option)

Ok, so I can use my phone as a hotspot to provide internet, which will then allow Apple Music or pay Tesla for a subscription to premium. Thanks everyone for the quick replies!

Premium Connectivity is worth it for me. I don't have to worry about my phone battery or consuming too much data, plus it is nice to have satellite maps and remotely monitoring the camera. We also use the big web browser on the screen to avoid triggering out insurance tracking app from detecting cell phone activity.

If you have an iPhone, you can use the shortcuts app to automatically turn on hot spot upon connecting to the model y (via Bluetooth). Make sure to toggle keep on while drive in the car WiFi menu after that initial hotspot connection. Save yourself that $10/100

I have a macro on my phone as soon as my car connects to the car's Bluetooth the Hotspot is started.  When it disconnects from the car's Bluetooth it shutsdown the hotspot. No big deal.

nope not required. Hotspot from your phone.

Samsung phones will auto content of you set up a routine.  Any other android phone could use Taskr, and Apple does this natively as well.  I prefer to be able to take my data with me to use other places vs being stuck to the Tesla.

I pay for premium connectivity, as of now it's affordable if it goes any higher might have to reconsider.

Hot spotting works, mostly. But sometimes it’s finicky. I go sick of it and just coughed up the $100.

Premium connectivity gives Internet to the car. Else you need hotspot.

Your car insurance company has an app on your mobile phone that tracks if you are using it while driving ?!?

LoneStarGut 2026-02-13 03:49

Yes. Snapshot from Progressive. We pay about $1600 every 6 months for two Teslas, a Honda and an old truck with a 24 year old male driver on our policy. It helps lower our rates. They watch for cell phone use, hard braking, fast acceleration and early AM usage on weekends.

DaSandman78 2026-02-13 03:58

I was gonna say huge invasion of privacy but those rates are pretty damn good!

Is it though? You already pay for data..... So you're paying again to arguably worse data? Lol

LoneStarGut 2026-02-13 15:00

I don't. I have a prepaid phone plan that costs $60 per year with 3GB all year.
