2023 to 2026?

Previous-Carob7818 | 2026-02-12 04:55 | 16 views

I currently own a 2023 Tesla Model Y LR AWD (HW3) (35k miles) and am the only owner the car has had. I test drove a 2026 Juniper and was wowed! But it’s hard to justify the $20,000 leap for an updated interior and better suspension. My question: Is HW4 really that much better than HW3? Is it worth the upgrade if I have the funds? Those that own one, how have you been liking it? I planned to drive my current Model Y until it broke but… The Juniper is realllly tempting😫

It's 90% the same car

PrizeMeans 2026-02-12 05:02

I test drove both as a non-EV owner and ultimately went with a 2023 with HW4. Interior was way nicer in the Juniper but not $17000 nicer over the used model

The updates are pretty substantial, even under the hood. From better comfort to better noise cancellation. Also the display is higher resolution and I believe all of them are larger now. In terms of HW4, for now, it’s not a huge leap but noticeable. HW3 is quite a few versions back and they’ve already hit a wall with it for the most part. However, keep in mind that if you get HW4 now you’re going to be in a similar spot after AI5 is out. And assuming they keep to their roadmap, AI6 isn’t far out. So you’re stuck in the same cycle but with likely increased frequency of hardware upgrades. So I’d only get it for the car upgrades, not HW4.

I own one of each. 2023 HW3 and 2026 HW4. I use FSD on both, although on the HW3 I cancel during winter because it’s trash in the snow. HW4 FSD is awesome in the snow. The 2026 has better interior, much better ride quality, more refined controls. And FSD is much better.

shaneucf 2026-02-12 05:09

that 10% makes it 90% different in software performance... Maybe not that much. But ye, if you just want a "car", not much has changed. if you want a "computer", a lot has changed.

shaneucf 2026-02-12 05:10

Model Y 29 Max Pro will be much better. The most powerful ~~iPhone~~ Model Y we've ever made

ysfex3 2026-02-12 05:19

You could upgrade to a hw4 2023 for a quarter of that if you get a decent trade in to Tesla, but with hw5 on the horizon, I probably wouldn't

newbie415 2026-02-12 05:48

Have no idea what the difference is in hw3 vs hw4 but I've put 20,000+ miles on a 26' MYLR since last April and it's been great. Very quiet ride with low nvh compared to pre-facelift. compliant suspension that doesn't crash and bounce on rough pavement. Seats hug tighter, rear seats tilt back and are powered, powered trunk, stronger heat rejection on the roof glass. Rear display, ventilated seats, matrix headlights are awesome at night. it's been the best daily I've had. Not sure it's worth upgrading from a 2023, but it was definitely worth the few grand over a 2025 when I was shopping.

madman6000 2026-02-12 05:55

Just wait for hw5

MattNis11 2026-02-12 06:19

Just wait for hw5

MattNis11 2026-02-12 06:20

Better wait for that one

liam1902 2026-02-12 06:21

You're gonna spend $20k to upgrade and then a few months later, Tesla is gonna add some crazy cool improvements into the newer cars and then you're gonna feel very upset. They are working on AI5 (+ AI6 as well), apparently just made a breakthrough with their in-house batteries, may be releasing Model Y L in the US, etc. Imagine you bought the Model 3 Refresh when it was released. Just 1-1.5 years later and Tesla added a front camera, turn signal stalk, etc to the Model 3 and it'll prob eventually get the black headliner, 16 inch screen, etc like Y Premium trims.

branden3112 2026-02-12 06:45

Look for a cheap HW4 like yours

ilovecostcopizza 2026-02-12 06:51

If you upgrade to a 2026... it will be outdated in 2029. If you're going to change a car every 3 years, then you might as well lease. Save your 20k for something that actually doesn't depreciate after a couple of months. Unless you are wealthy, then yeah, do whatever you want.

Dave_Marsh 2026-02-12 07:34

I upgraded from a 2021 HW3 Model 3 to the new 2026 Juniper Model Y and it’s amazing. Harsh suspension/ride is gone. I no longer have to fall into my front seat, can just step into car. Just as fast as my old Model 3 since it came with acceleration boost, And, it runs the latest version of FSD. Maybe you’d be less impressed from a 2023 model, but it was a substantial improvement in every way over my 2021. All that said, if you’re always waiting for the next great thing, you’ll never be able to enjoy the latest great thing. FSD is all but autonomous for me today, and it definitely drives better than I do with my stiff neck and degrading vision as I near 80. FSD on my Model 3 was pretty good, but on the new HW4 platform it’s amazing.

adllev 2026-02-12 08:51

In your situation I would either just pay to install the juniper suspension in your 2023 Model Y for $1-2k or otherwise I would trade in your 2023 Model Y for another Late 2023/2024 Model Y with HW4 for around $28-30k before trade in if you really want to use FSD. Personally I think the older style is much better both from rear and the front and I wouldnt pay $20k more for suspension or HW4 especially before HW5 is released next year.

K3jai 2026-02-12 11:02

Keep it for now.

Lukeman269 2026-02-12 11:50

Just swap the suspension over and save yourself some money. I'll be doing the Juniper suspension retrofit on my '23 this summer. Only like $950 for the parts direct from Tesla. Then you can improve your ride and feel better about continuing to drive your '23. I've been having pretty good success on HW3 lately. Running the latest 12.6.4. Gets me to work and back as well as running some errands on the weekends. Only thing it's not great at is parking but it's easy to take over and just find a better spot yourself. Seems like HW4 is more polished overall, but it's certainly not worth the extra money to upgrade.

HiroyukiC1296 2026-02-12 13:42

Unless you are concerned about future updates and chasing the latest tech, you would just lease a future MY. That said, don't leap to a new car if the current car is still in good shape. As others have said, EVs depreciate and always continuously improving software, so they will always become outdated after a few years. it's give and take for these types of cars.

NecessaryInternet603 2026-02-12 14:26

That wait will be a longer one than you're implying. Tesla has said it will arrive in customer purchased vehicles in mid 2027.

NecessaryInternet603 2026-02-12 14:27

He has a Model Y.

liam1902 2026-02-12 14:28

Think my entire post went over your head.

NecessaryInternet603 2026-02-12 14:40

Only you know the state of your finances which matters because the upgrade transaction cost is substantial. Having said that you could gather a little data by tentatively ordering a new Model Y while trading in your current Model Y in order to ascertain the all in cost. It may not be as significant as you imagine. Your 23 is reaching the end of the new vehicle warranty though the main battery warranty has ~5 more years to run. Continue to give it some thought if a warranty matters to you. Don't forget to factor in the >$1,000 cost of new tires. I chose to trade in my perfectly fine 2018 Model 3 Performance with 40,000 miles on a new 2026 Model Y Performance and believe I made the best choice for my circumstances. Of course there are way too many details to get into but you probably get my point by now.

NecessaryInternet603 2026-02-12 14:44

There is no "seems" in my opinion. FSD on HW4 is night and day different. The word superior isn't quite a strong enough adjective. If FSD matters to anyone, then HW4 is the only criteria that matters today.

chaustark 2026-02-12 15:10

Spend 1-2k upgrade the suspension. I did that and my legacy Y is much better

DammatBeevis666 2026-02-12 15:41

Don’t forget taxes and crushing first few years depreciation

praguer56 2026-02-12 15:58

Don't do it. This is what they want us to do. Instead of changing our hardware for free, as promised, they'll hold out until we trade. They'll get to have their cake and eat it too. My 2022 MYLR was bought for $60k PLUS $12,000 for FSD that was supposed to work forever and be just as good as the new version. It's obviously not. They'd have to do an amazing trade deal for me to buy another Tesla. Otherwise, I'll drive this one until the wheels fall off.

madman6000 2026-02-12 15:58

So a year. If OP buys now he'll have FOMO again in a year then what?

torusrekt 2026-02-12 16:11

May as well just wait for HW6

madman6000 2026-02-12 16:24

Ideally HW7

Aytewun 2026-02-12 16:52

I say not worth it. I also have a 2023 MYP. I could sell and pay the difference for a 2026. New cards come out every year though. Those that got the first batch of refreshed y don’t have the 16 inch screen. Always will be something different

Previous-Carob7818 2026-02-12 17:24

Wait, how do you order parts direct from Tesla/how do you find someone to install them? This retrofit is 100% something I’d do (but I live 6 hours from the nearest service center)

Previous-Carob7818 2026-02-12 17:27

How did you go about upgrading it? I know there’s some kits out there

Previous-Carob7818 2026-02-12 17:29

I paid $65k for mine (w/o) FSD😭it’s so upsetting that they have depreciated so much, and I’ve loved my car. I’ll probably just keep my current Y until it breaks as well

chaustark 2026-02-12 17:29

Just retrofit the juniper one. Did that last year after the juniper came out for few months and has been fantastic. Only wait until tesla upgrade hw3 to 4.

Lukeman269 2026-02-12 18:22

[https://epc.tesla.com/en-US/landingpage](https://epc.tesla.com/en-US/landingpage) Sign in with your Tesla login and you can search for parts in the catalog for the 2026 MY. There's a couple of videos on youtube showing how this work is performed and they give you a full list of part numbers to get. I'm planning to do the work myself, but I'm sure if you call around to a shop that works on Tesla vehicles, you could probably bring them parts and just pay the labor rate. Tesla also has the service manuals on that website that shows you step by step instructions and torque values for each fastener. Really cool they give us access to that information.

SHale1963 2026-02-12 23:46

suspension is only marginally better. FSD with HW4 is much much better than HW3. Myself with a 2023 MYLR I wouldn't buy a 2026 Tesla Y. Not enough differences to justify the price.

Pwheatstraw2000 2026-02-13 00:00

I traded my 2023 for a 2026. I’m very happy with the decision.

quentech 2026-02-13 01:53

People really ask this question with a straight face? Of course it's not worth $20-fucking-thousand dollars.

quentech 2026-02-13 01:54

> I live 6 hours from the nearest service center They wouldn't do the swap for you anyway. Tesla wouldn't touch this with a 10 foot pole. You realize this is just a car, right? There's nothing "EV" about the suspension. You can take it to any mechanic for normal car jobs.

quentech 2026-02-13 01:55

> I paid $65k for mine (w/o) FSD😭it’s so upsetting that they have depreciated so much You know what would make that decision even better? Doubling down and throwing another $20,000 away to depreciation!

Active_Arm_5433 2026-02-14 14:00

I have a 2023 Model Y Performance with HW3 with 43K miles, paid $68K out the door. I’m planning to keep it long term. There’s always going to be a newer model and better hardware, so I’m not chasing every upgrade

Previous-Carob7818 2026-02-16 18:41

It’s wild how upset you are about a car that isn’t yours 😭 If $20k scares you just say that. I asked a question, not for a meltdown in my comments.

quentech 2026-02-16 22:32

It's wild how you feel the need to ask people on the internet to validate your poor decisions 🤷‍♂️
