LG or Panasonic battery in Fremont built 2023 LR - how to tell?

Toreroguysd | 2026-02-11 17:21 | 9 views

Unfortunately I didn’t learn that LG batteries made their way into US built cars until after I bought my 2023 long range (three weeks ago). I just assumed all US built cars used Panasonic batteries. When shopping cars I found some 2023’s with Voltest reports showing 82 kWh packs, and others with Voltest reports showing 77.8 kWh packs. I’m now finding conflicting information about whether those with the 77.8 kWh packs are LG made. I found this article (https://www.autoevolution.com/news/tesla-confuses-us-customers-with-two-battery-options-for-the-model-3-and-model-y-235946.html) which says both LG and Panasonic packs were used at one point, but the article is from June 2024 so I don’t know if it’s accurate for 2023 made cars. I’ve also found conflicting information that says Tesla still used old Panasonic 77.8 kWh packs in some 2023 cars. Can anyone speak with certainty on this? I’m trying to figure out what’s in my car. Thanks!

Just out of curiosity, does it actually matter? I have a 2023 Model Y LR AWD from Fremont and I believe it has Panasonic 2170 cells.

I’ve seen a lot of reports that the LG batteries are garbage.

Pretty certain the 2170 was only used in Austin produced 2023 MY AWD and it's also not a LR. I just went through this on a car I bought from the dealer when I realized the LR they sold me was in fact the 2170 model which isn't LR. Had to unwind the deal and buy a different car.

I think LG batteries don’t charge as well but may be more reliable. Try fast charging it from 10% and see if there’s a noticeable difference from the Panasonic 2170 charging curve. Make sure you precondition though

You get 8yr 120k mile main battery warranty If the LG batteries are garbage, that should be a long enough time frame to find out and get it replaced for free

Tesla app confirms my car is long range awd.

I have Jan/Feb 2023, Fremont built MYLR AWD How can I check which battery I have?

Toreroguysd 2026-02-11 18:35

That’s exactly my question lol. My car is Fremont built MYLR AWD from August 2023.

Yeah if it says Long Range under specs & warranty then you're good. The 2170 model I had only said "All-Wheel Drive".

LoL Maybe charge it from 10-80% and see how many kwh entered. Divide by 0.7 and see if it is closer to 77 or 82 I'll try the same

Best way to be sure is to check on Toolbox (paid diag tool). You can get the battery code and compare it. BT42 is Panasonic 82kWh and BT43 is LG 79kWh

Thx. On a Hail Mary I texted Tesla service in the app with this question and they said Panasonic. That’s good but I still don’t know how to reconcile that with the Voltest report.

You need Scan My Tesla tool or look at the battery sticker. Generally? NMC chemistry is better than NCA (degradation wise).

I don't think LG batteries are garbage, but LG batteries (ie in European model 3 performance) are distinctively different compared to Panasonic batteries (in US model 3 performance) and they're also advertised as having 50hp more in the US. Ultimately the performance figures are similar.
