I live in a pothole infested city, am I a psychopath for considering buying these?

Not at all. Having a set of beater wheels for daily use is a win

renfang 2026-02-09 23:11

Probably better mileage too

With my Y Launch I chose the 19". Wish they had the 18" available. Traded in a 2020 M3. Curb rash is awful with the larger rims.

Crowncaps13 2026-02-09 23:47

I sold my tesla wheels so fast for a set of solid 19s. I live in Detroit where potholes are made. Lol

jmreger 2026-02-09 23:57

Stop running into curbs 🤣 just be a little more careful. Lots of people ive met and chatted with always seem to run into curbs or rub up against stuff when they park. You have crazy good cameras and the mirrors tilt down when in reverse.

Qudpb 2026-02-10 00:56

Which ones did you go with?

Slayerz00m 2026-02-10 00:58

Strong steel wheels + lots of rubber = safer in potholes Bonus = More Range

Crowncaps13 2026-02-10 01:09

If im being honest, i dont remember. The important thing is more tire less wheel. Tends to protect the wheel from impacts more.

Figwit_ 2026-02-10 01:27

At $900 per wheel without a tire, I don’t think so. There must be some cheaper steelies out there.

Qudpb 2026-02-10 02:18

900 is for 4 wheels

popPOPpopPOPpopPP 2026-02-10 02:38

Smart if you do, my M3P had a hole in a different tire every other month, had the low profile performance tires on it. Nothing else broke or wore out on the Tesla in 7 years of driving it to 128k miles except the tires. Since the Teslas batteries are so heavy and they accelerate so fast the Teslas wear down tires 2x quicker. Got the bigger 19 inch tires on my new Jupiter Y.

superhypercoolguy 2026-02-10 02:45

Aren’t the steel wheels heavier? How will it get more range?

Slayerz00m 2026-02-10 03:18

That steel wheel is listed as 28lb on eBay While a 21" alloy wheels are 38lb Even the 19" Gemini wheel is 29.6 lb (as per Google Gemini)

bernbabybern51 2026-02-10 03:59

There are aluminum alloys that you can buy for a similar price that are much lighter and better looking.

PlaneGeneral5782 2026-02-10 04:37

I’ve seen these in person they look pretty cool. Definitely a different more off-road look

quentech 2026-02-10 04:40

For about the same money you can get flow formed wheels that are ~20 lbs.

makoblade 2026-02-10 07:22

Eh, the MY rims protrude past the tires, unlike basically every non-Tesla vehicle in existence. Especially for folks who have to actually park (i.e. not just roll into a large open field or parking lot) it's a matter of when, not if, since it's just probability statistics at that point.

bicball 2026-02-10 09:10

I run 18s for my snow tires. No regrets

ggfb20 2026-02-10 12:23

OP must drive in either Philadelphia or Houston, and if so, I'm afraid not even those heavy duty tires will be enough.

TimeSlipperWHOOPS 2026-02-10 14:22

I hadn't curb checked a car since I was 16 before I got my Tesla. It's a real thing.

sevargmas 2026-02-10 15:46

Why not just buy 19” inch Tesla wheels? It’s practically the same thing but they actually look pretty good.

Qudpb 2026-02-10 16:20

Just pulled the trigger on some 18 in Atomic AW21, seems to be one of the best bang for your buck options out there

PurpleIris3 2026-02-10 19:25

I did that on my Model Y! It’s AWESOME. 18” rims and all terrain tires. I did it because I usually spend 2 months of the year traveling into National Forests and such and do a ton of camping, but turns out it’s amazing for messed up city roads! I’m in New Orleans most of the year and no longer have to worry about slicing the side of the tire on a random destroyed chunk of road, and I go down torn up streets with confidence. It barely changed my energy usage at all, if any. DO IT!

Original-Definition2 2026-02-10 21:26

wow ! I want some !

Original-Definition2 2026-02-10 21:27

true, but at what cost ?

Original-Definition2 2026-02-10 21:28

855 for all 4 or for each ?

Qudpb 2026-02-10 22:51

4

Original-Definition2 2026-02-10 23:57

I can't imagine living in Detroit Cleveland etc with 20 or 21 wheels.

HighlightOverall7474 2026-02-11 00:04

Do it. Make it a zombie apocalypse mobile.

quentech 2026-02-11 00:11

> at what cost ? Literally the same price as the steelies in OP, $900: https://atomic-wheels.com/products/aw21-for-tesla-model-3-y

Original-Definition2 2026-02-11 03:16

I like alloy wheels, but prefer allow of iron and carbon If the steelies were about same weight I'd pick the "ferrous wheel" whoah wait / weight the link has weights listed. Son of a friggin-frag those 21" are insanely heavy !! New Tesla low cost model comes with 18" steel wheels - could you just buy from Tesla dealership ?

quentech 2026-02-11 06:26

> If the steelies were about same weight I'd pick the "ferrous wheel" They are, of course, not. The steelies are about 28 pounds and the flow formed are about 20 pounds. Dropping 8 lbs a corner is nothing to sneeze at.

500CSTNW 2026-02-11 15:28

I'm in DC and just took off my Ubers and replaced them with 235/55/18s.

500CSTNW 2026-02-11 15:28

It was THAT bad

GreedyMeet1273 2026-02-12 01:51

Facts, i live in philly. I bought a subaru to daily and weekend my 26 MYP. When the snow clears and the weather warms, i'll have her out more 🚗💨
