Is the Model Y About to Get Outclassed by Volvo EX60 and BMW iX3?

CrazyZealousideal760 | 2026-02-09 20:23 | 14 views

Volvo EX60 (\~810 km range) and BMW iX3 (\~805 km), both 800V charging, are right around the corner. When do you think Tesla will release a Model Y that matches or beats that? Feels risky buying a Model Y AWD LR now if depreciation spikes once those land.

How much are the Volvo and BMW units, equally equipped? They’re already in a different class than a Model Y. To answer your question: no.

Two cars that aren’t out yet that START $20,000 more than the base model Y, and are more expensive (before options) that the MYP. These are not the same class of car.

Not quite the same price tag. To me the Y on one hand and the EX60 / iX3 play in two different leagues and appeal to two different client types. Is the Model Y outmatched spec-wise ? Partly, yes : no 800V, less range, arguably lower build quality / materials quality (fake leather etc). But on the other hand, efficiency-wise the Y still better than both of these cars as far as we can tell (yes their range is higher, but their battery’s much bigger). And most importantly, the Y is much cheaper and offers a very valid price-to-performance and price-to-equipment proposition.

Tesla infotainment and software still superior

Will this car that is 50% more expensive be better than the car that is half its price? Probably, way more budget for a bigger battery. Is it better equipped, not really. A Standard Model Y is better equipped than a base BMW IX3

Those start at $60k for those range estimates. I don't think they compete directly and don't see a change in depreciation for the MY happening. The BMW and Volvo will most likely be low production and relatively a lot less popular than the MY. Tesla will likely update when pressure gets within their market.

This is what a lot of people can’t wrap their heads around. I could never go back to legacy auto infotainment let alone no access to proper self driving.

Plus, neither of these has anything close to FSD at launch and probably won't ever. I am someone who can afford an EV at any price range and love my MYP. I looked at all these options that were coming, including the Rivian R2 and the MYP still won me over. In second place is the iX3, but again, no FSD.

Too heavy because of the larger battery and as a result too expensive. Plenty of data on the most optimal battery capacity, given you charge at home. Much worse software capabilities. Maybe the public comes to senses finally with these that super high range does not outweigh the outrageous price and weight of the battery. The longest range EV truck Silverado was selling under 4k per quarter with heavy discounts.

And what advantage does 800v charging provide?  And don’t tell me faster charging without some strong proof.

Future_Measurement42 2026-02-09 21:29

Smaller wires.

mammaliancochlea 2026-02-09 21:43

Want FSD? Get Tesla. That's the main difference and it's huge.

Den_Ouwen_Belg 2026-02-09 21:54

Surprisingly, the new model Y also doesn’t come with FSD anymore 😅

Jman841 2026-02-09 21:55

What? that's not true. They took away autopilot, not FSD. FSD is $100/month

teaston1981 2026-02-09 21:55

Our MY is £500pm, the iX3 will likely be minimum £800pm, it’s a very different prospect. MY is more comparable to an iX1 cost wise.

Den_Ouwen_Belg 2026-02-09 21:57

Depreciation is always going to hit. It’s a car, not an investment. As soon as you leave the shop it loses 15% immediately. Tesla is also subject to depreciation, not only because of newer batteries but also because of HW5. Other brands are a bit more stable in that regard, but not by much.

Den_Ouwen_Belg 2026-02-09 22:00

That’s what I meant - I see people responding that it’s so much cheaper and has FSD, but that’s not a given on a new car. And without that $100/month, the Tesla suddenly becomes a whole lot less interesting. (And you can’t buy the option anymore)

JD_352 2026-02-09 22:07

This. Unless the infrastructure is there. Tesla has the largest supercharging network available. Yet, V4 chargers make up a small percentage of what is available at supercharging stations. Thus, 800V charging will be limited to those that want to install those at home (and where available). I think it’s good for the future and shows technology is advancing well. But most will be limited by the infrastructure for a while.

Jman841 2026-02-09 23:28

How is it less interesting? No other car has anything close to FSD. BMW has a million subscriptions, even for heated seats.

Prod1702 2026-02-10 03:21

This is the 1 and only reason I bought another Y last year vs getting something else. I looked at so many other options but nothing came close software wise.

Den_Ouwen_Belg 2026-02-10 08:07

From my own experience, you should really try the new autopilot from BMW on the IX3. It’s fantastic, especially on highways. I dare say it feels better (more natural) in that scenario vs. FSD. It’s not doing anything remotely similar in cities though, but I spend the majority of my time on highways.

Jman841 2026-02-10 09:31

Have you tried FSD 14.2? It's literally perfect. I have a new MYP I got Dec 29 and now have 2300 miles on it, 2100 is FSD. I sit in my car in the garage, put my destination in, buckle my seatbelt, and hit start driving. It takes me to my destination and parks for me. I then unbuckle and walk out of the car without touch a single other thing. Sorry, it's not even close. BMW is years behind.

RepulsiveTable2016 2026-02-10 21:19

They certainly will be better cars. But it shows on the price.
