Anyone know what this plastic strip sticking out of my tire is?

Straight-Reserve1343 | 2026-02-09 03:06 | 15 views

Just noticed this thin plastic “paper” coming out between the rim and tire on my Model Y (Hankook tires). Car is new and drives fine, no air loss. Is this normal or something I should worry about? Pics attached. Thanks!

It’s normal Just pull it out Nothing to worry about

It is most likely a strip of a velco type substance added last minute at the factory to help dampen an aero cover noise that’s been a common complaint on Juniper Ys. It’s harmless but they’ve been coming out. If you pull it out then the noise may become more prevalent.

Structural plastic. Remove at your own risk.

3M tape. It’s there to prevent NVH

Thanks! Do you recommend fixing it back? I have no idea how to do that.

Straight-Reserve1343 2026-02-09 04:12

I see. Do you recommend fixing it back?

Straight-Reserve1343 2026-02-09 04:12

Should I attempt to remove it or fix it?

General_Diag4321 2026-02-09 04:13

You could cut the excess carefully, or just go to your service center and kindly ask them to remove or replace the tape. Removing it might increase the noise

I was thinking the same: was thinking of removing it. I’m trying to understand what that is and why it was there 😅

Self destruct ignition strip

I think it comes like that from the factory, not sure if your car is new, but I think it goes in between the caps of the rims and the hubcaps so that it doesn’t scratch, but it’s not needed

Lebrongains27 2026-02-09 04:44

Update, I see that it’s a standard model so it must be new as in a new car, yeah those just come from the Factory

Kenju4u 2026-02-09 04:45

Looks like a piece of protective plastic on the hub when it was new, I would just trim it off.

KeeslerCondoChief 2026-02-09 05:30

Take an razor blade knife and carefully trim it off

FragrantExcitement 2026-02-09 05:42

Is it like a loose thread on a sweater?

collegedreads 2026-02-09 12:04

You can take it to the service center but as far as I know they don’t have the tooling to replace it and would just remove it. Sorry I don’t have a better answer.

Lebrongains27 2026-02-09 12:11

Yes, correct

K3jai 2026-02-09 12:58

Remove it

CopperBlitter 2026-02-09 13:36

Won't that cause the whole wheel to unravel? 🤣

vypergts 2026-02-09 16:07

I’m more bothered by the T logo on the aero caps not pointing to the valve stem.

Fiatch294986 2026-02-09 17:12

You just pull it out to activate the battery 😆

Fiatch294986 2026-02-09 17:14

🧐
