2026 MY Xpel PPF with a HUGE dog leg.. worth it

FitterOver40 | 2026-02-07 04:11 | 21 views

Had our MY covered in Xpel PPF. The entire front end, A pillars and the extended lower portion. I marked up the pic with the black line. Essentially the PPF covers the lower area from the door crease down. Then on the rear door, you get a huge dog leg. You can see where the front wheel splats on the paint. I was surprised how much debris/ salt hit the dog leg. It's the perfect amount of coverage. I'm not a huge fan of mud flaps, which is why I chose the extended lower coverage.

Did it save much money? I went with full coverage STEK and it's been working great for us. I was a bit worried about the dirt line on the edge to do only partial panels, since my car is light colored too.

PPF is awesome but so expensive

When washing with a pressure washer, don't spray directly on the edge of the ppf on the sides and also tell this when taking the car to a wash. Had these side skirts done with ppf in my 3 and one car wash (even though I told not to) did this and then there was a amount of a tennis ball of water under the ppf. Now I have a new Y and did not ppf anything. Here they come with the small patch of ppf in the rear doors straight from Tesla. Decided not to do any ppf as it was a real pain in the ass to keep in good condition and also it did not affect in any way positively in the exchange price I got for the car. It is my daily driver, not a hobby car or a rare collectors item so it's all the same if it has a couple of rock chips there and there. Wish I would done the same with my earlier Teslas as it has been more or less just waste of money.

I didn’t feel this car needed full body coverage. For what I did, it cost $2300. Not cheap, not horrible.

FitterOver40 2026-02-07 16:12

Agreed. It’s not for everyone. I’m just really particular.

FitterOver40 2026-02-07 16:14

Agreed. You need to be careful washing, polishing etc around exposed PPF edges.

Lebrongains27 2026-02-07 17:34

I’m really particular as well and I’m overly concerned about blemishes in the car, but couldn’t justify dropping six grand to wrap the whole car when it adds no value other than preserving the paint, trust me I would love to do it, but I just can’t justify the pricing

FitterOver40 2026-02-07 17:43

Have you considered only wrapping the front end?

Lebrongains27 2026-02-07 18:06

So I did, estimates were like 2500 which wasn’t terrible but I decided not to, I have terrible OCD and I try to work on it. I had a 2021 model three with a couple paint defects from the factory which were addressed but overtime I noticed more imperfections with it, due to the tax credit ending. I got myself into a 2025 model three. Car came pretty much perfect, one defect on the trunk that’s under the lip you can see in my post history, Tesla said there’s nothing wrong with it and it won’t get worse and if it does, it’s covered, I also accidentally scratched my passenger side skull cap on a snowblower handle that did small cosmetic damage, was able to find a replacement on Amazon exact paint match full set for 30 bucks, I do notice that when the window closes it makes an error so slight creek sound coming from the mirror my assumption is that the plastic might’ve gotten slightly stretched but everything is fully functional and I’m not spending $1000 to replace it I totally understand the perfectionist part of PPF, but I just recognized that nothing will ever stay perfect no matter how careful and OCD I am so didn’t mean to write a novel but wanted to give you some context

Did you cut that dog leg pattern yourself or is that part of a kit?

FitterOver40 2026-02-07 22:48

That was Xpel’s cut. The larger area makes a lot of sense. You can see how much the front wheels sling crap all the way back (and high).

Cool, I want to do something similar. Except it’s to cover up existing damage. Everywhere under your PPF looks like it’s been sandblasted and I’ve resigned myself to getting some kind of vinyl wrap to cover it up. I am looking for something pre cut to DIY though.

I have had PPF on my MYP for a few years now and it’s awesome. Protects the car and washing the car is so nice with PPF.

FitterOver40 2026-02-08 18:47

got it and it makes sense.. We've done full frontal on our past six cars. I thought about skipping it for the MY. It really has zero resale value. However my wife reminded me how annoyed I'd be if I didn't do it as the front bumper will eventually get hammered. It's her daily commuter for work. On the highway four days a week. After a month, the PPF already has one tiny nick. End of day, for my sanity, I'm happy we spent the $2300

Have you considered getting mud flaps?

FitterOver40 2026-02-09 20:14

Yes and felt sans flaps would look a lot cleaner. However I may put on a pair of front flaps. Dont feel a need for rears.
