Performance vs RWD

Appropriate-Bad728 | 2026-02-06 21:45 | 18 views

Performance is what I want but at $85,000 it seems a bit steep. RWD is 20k less. No performance models to test drive here. Is it really worth the extra 20k?

Are you talking USD? CAD?  I’d just get a AWD performance for $50k instead… https://www.tesla.com/my/order/7SAY228_2d1759d4a4d7affd82a61402ccd7a8ba?range=200&titleStatus=new&redirect=no#overview

It's the Euro price conversion into USD. I'm from Ireland. Haven't seen any performance models here so figured asking the Americans where they seem to he abundant. The AWD is $74k here. Painful.

taveanator 2026-02-06 23:05

Man. It’s a fun car but not $75k fun.

just a premium Y is plenty fast enough. Unless you really need to prove something, you don't need the performance model.

I just went from a 2022 Model S LR to a 2026 Model Y RWD and the efficiency is insane. My lifetime on the S was 320wh/mi on 19s. My Y is at 253wh/mi on 19s.

I have the 2023 Performance, I love it. But if I were to buy a second tesla in the future, I would go for the Premium Y ( AWD Long range) or even the Premium RWD. The large rims with skinny wheels make the ride bumpy and you have to be careful not to scratch the rims. The 0 - 60mph in 3.5 is only when you switch it to "Sports" mode and I only switch it to that mode twice in the past 2.5 years . I literally payed 10k more for features I hate maintaining or don't use. The Performance does look better but not 10k better.

Get what you really want, sucks when you regret after buying a car. I bought what I knew I wanted, and never looked back! It’s EU high car taxes. All cars are proportionally higher than US prices. The more performance the higher the tax. A quick search says Ireland adds 23% VAT plus another €5000 registration. So it’s really what else can you get for the total price. I doubt any new ICE car can match the acceleration of the MYP That being said my Awd premium is still fast.

I think performance models are worth it. It puts a smile on my face! Not only that but I recently swapped out the wheels and tires to light weight 19" wheels and I get better range and better ride.

captainsaverebornII 2026-02-07 04:32

Its Performance or a different car for me.

ObeyTheShihTzu 2026-02-07 04:47

I have a RWD and it's plenty fast. I also had a Performance loaner and it was stupid fast with acceleration. I can't imagine how a Plaid feels. I think going from any gas car to any EV is going to be a huge jump in immediate acceleration and torque. If you need to move, it'll move you without any issues whatsoever. Is it worth the extra? That's kinda up to you. I have kids and a mortgage, so I don't need to be paying for tires more often because I have that speed available to me. I know I'd use if it were there, and I'd probably end up with some speeding tickets too.

Puzzleheaded-Race671 2026-02-07 07:04

I disagree. In terms of bang for your buck there is nothing like Teslas performance models. In terms of comfort you can always downsize your wheels and that fixes that

Puzzleheaded-Race671 2026-02-07 07:05

Always performance.

CeleritasPrime 2026-02-07 11:03

I drove a RWD Premium back to back with a Performance recently and man did that make me want the Performance. It rides better due to the active damping; it’s got better seats; and it obviously goes like hell. If you can afford it, get the Performance and enjoy.

rainer_d 2026-02-07 12:22

The Performance looks best. Financially, it’s insane. Especially as you need two different types of tires per set.

toomuchhp 2026-02-07 14:21

I love my performance, it looks the best by far and gets the LR battery. I put 19s on it and it gets better range now too. They’re also much more rare than the regular LR so I’m hoping that means better resale in the future. I can find 50 regular and LR for sale but only 1 or 2 performance ever

samchoi924 2026-02-07 14:45

Add $3k to the price ( I have them on my MYP). Other difference is little bit loss of clearance with the Performance model. I don't know but I got duped by the fake brakes on my 23 MYP.

samchoi924 2026-02-07 14:46

Why no AWD?

rufio0618 2026-02-07 15:30

I bought a 2026 Model Y Premium RWD, Deep Metallic Blue / White. This is my first EV and Tesla. I live in Central Florida and did not see myself needing an AWD or Performance due to it being a warm weather climate with little elevation change. As well, I will never go off road or race my car, so my justification is that the RWD is plenty good for me. I also predominantly use FSD for daily commutes and running errands. Its so nice to just chill out and let the car do the work. Plus, this car is crazy fast compared to my old 2015 Mazda 3 Hatchback. All in all, get the car you want and can afford.

SHale1963 2026-02-07 21:02

bang for buck? an EV already has instant torque and quick 0-60 times. Spending even more money to just 'show off' is kinda silly, imho. but you do you.

Remote-Jackfruit3570 2026-02-09 04:20

Agree.

toronto187 2026-02-10 01:37

I feel like premium + acceleration boost is generally a good middle ground, unless you already know just you want the most performance

Freezin_ 2026-02-10 05:15

From a MS owner, just get the premium. Dont get the performance. The 0-60 is fun a few times, but will get old pretty quick. Its just a fun party trick when you have new people in the car. The real reason I would recommend the premium over the performance is two fold. First, the slower acceleration is actually better day to day. The quick acceleration + deceleration (regen breaking) can make people feel much more car sick. This can be mitigated some what by being gentle on the pedal, but that's not too fun. The second reason is the suspension is stiffer, and I believe lower, on the performance. Lower suspension will give you less clearance, and will also be more firm over bumps. The premium will have a bit more cushioned ride. The premium is just an all around better car to daily, and its cheaper with lower insurance costs.

Motorcyclejohn 2026-02-11 00:22

No regrets with my premium rwd with fsd.
