Just put on 18" wheels. I'm loving it

LunaJax | 2026-02-06 20:08 | 97 views

This is my early 2023 Model Y. I wanted to downsize to 18s for a little cheaper tire and a smoother ride. I found these [Drag DR-73 wheels](https://www.dragwheels.com/wheel/dr-73-rally-bronze-full-painted/11599/5076/5/) thru Discount Tire. Got their in-house brand [Phantom C-Sports](https://www.discounttire.com/buy-tires/phantom-c-sport/p/90940) for only $128 a tire. I remember when I got it new and Tesla wanted $500 to replace a single stock tire. Anyway, I'm super pleased with how these look against the white. It's making me fall in love with this car again

How much for those rims?

LunaJax 2026-02-06 20:15

It was about $180 per wheel

praguer56 2026-02-06 20:16

I'm thinking of this right now. The 21" wheels are so rough that I just can't anymore. I'm hoping the 18" are smoother and I get a boost in range.

Public-Practice-4032 2026-02-06 20:39

they look nice hard to tell they’re 18

drahgon 2026-02-06 20:43

More importantly how's the ride feel in comparison?

LunaJax 2026-02-06 20:49

It's noticeably smoother. I notice it most when leaving or pulling into a parking lot or my driveway. I'll need to do some more driving to comment on the general driving feel.

LunaJax 2026-02-06 20:50

Thanks! I thought the same thing. I was worried they might look funny like some of the other 18s I've seen, but I think the extended spoke helps it look more like a 19

LunaJax 2026-02-06 20:51

I'll have to report back on any range boost benefits. These wheels are also about 8 lbs lighter than the stock Gemini's.

drahgon 2026-02-06 20:52

In my 2020 Y I literally feel the texture of the road. Was hoping this would smooth that out cuz I've been thinking about going to 18s myself

Successful-Scholar24 2026-02-06 21:04

Looks like a “tricked” out model Y Long Range or RWD.

LunaJax 2026-02-06 21:06

Yeah, it's the Dual Motor Long Range. All stock except for the new rims.

Joatboy 2026-02-06 21:06

This is the way

ProbablyMyRealName 2026-02-06 21:25

Looks great! What size are the tires?

LunaJax 2026-02-06 21:27

235/55R18 Ends up being almost exactly the diameter of stock 19" Gemini's

ProbablyMyRealName 2026-02-06 21:30

Nice. I went a little bigger for my winter tires, 235/60r18. They’re like 1% larger than whatever comes on the stock 21” wheels. They fill the wheel wells a little better. I’m shopping for a set of 18” summer tires and wheels now, since my winters will start melting around April.

OrganizationThese877 2026-02-06 21:32

Do you notice a big difference in ride quality?

LunaJax 2026-02-06 21:35

I noticed the ride was smoother immediately after leaving the tire shop yesterday. I'll have to report back after driving with them a while longer.

Ooogen 2026-02-06 21:44

I went 255/55R18 - I this this size fills out the wheel wells alot better

markfineart 2026-02-06 22:04

Here in Toronto I put 18” winter tires on my 2020 MYLR and they do a nice job of cutting through the snow and slop.

KingofPenisland69 2026-02-06 22:15

Yup there’s a boost in range

pnw_sunny 2026-02-06 22:16

i have a 23 with stock 19 inch wheels, while the ride is decent, i would imagine 18 would be nicer. but to switch i would need to buy four new wheels so need to price that out.

Actuarial_type 2026-02-06 22:24

I also have a ‘23 MYP and I can’t wait for my tires to wear out, I think I’m doing19”, glad to hear the ride quality is nicer. It’s a little flinty on the 21”!

Eichmil 2026-02-06 22:43

I wonder if some of that is the comparison between old tires and new ones. In any case - congrats on the upgrade. I might consider something similar when my tires wear out.

ScaredPatience2478 2026-02-06 23:45

How’s the traction ? Really debating this for my performance Y

Tradetheday2093 2026-02-06 23:56

How much more?

Gimme_somebutter 2026-02-07 02:25

These look like 16s but if you're happy, I'm happy

LunaJax 2026-02-07 03:13

😂

nzaf985 2026-02-07 04:37

Awful.

nzaf985 2026-02-07 04:38

No there isn’t…

nzaf985 2026-02-07 04:38

Nothing notable at all. Doesn’t make a difference

graypan 2026-02-07 05:52

Did the same

Puzzleheaded-Race671 2026-02-07 07:24

I’m debating ‘18 or ‘19. I feel like ‘19 is the sweet spot

Puzzleheaded-Race671 2026-02-07 07:25

I’m at 17k miles but just replaced front right 1K ago bc of pothole. I wonder when I can replace the tires/wheel probably 25-30k miles/next 1.5 years whichever comes first

KingofPenisland69 2026-02-07 15:15

Elevation changes and wind matter more but you can get 20%

LunaJax 2026-02-07 18:12

Compared to the bald tires I took off, the traction is great, lol. I was expecting the traction to feel a little softer and less sporty, but I haven't noticed that yet.

Original-Definition2 2026-02-07 22:54

to people view this post - consider the trade off ! the wheels give better ride, but you need to live with more range, less wheel damage, less noise. Oh and don't complain when you have to pay less for tire replacements

Rjeezyx 2026-02-08 09:35

Yep 18s always look too small and too much trade off 19 is perfect

Rjeezyx 2026-02-08 09:37

It’s much cheaper to install the whole juniper suspension and is 1000x better than any increase you get from going to 18s fyi

Rjeezyx 2026-02-08 09:39

You can’t maintain traction on a P with a 235 until like 40mph you need wider if going 18s or you give up acceleration

tabbybobatti 2026-02-08 13:52

There 100% is. When I switched to 19’s it was noticeably different.

praguer56 2026-02-08 17:00

We have a Volvo xc60 too which is on 18s and my partner didn't even know it. He thought they were the same as the Tesla, but I think it might be because the tires on the Volvo are taller than the tires on the Tesla. Both are on the same tire - Michelin Pilot Sport All Seasons.

Windforge 2026-02-12 21:43

Nice. That will help a little with range too I take it? Or no...🤔
