There's a very distinct mechanical thunk when I release the accelerator above about 20mph (30kph). The Tesla mechanic didn't recognize it and took apart the whole dash to assess, said everything was safe, talked to Tesla HQ and ultimately told me it was a hydraulic engagement noise related to this setting being turned on. I tested it this morning and indeed the sound only happens with this is on, and particularly when it's winter/freezing temps outside.

It’s the car pressing the brakes. Can you duplicate the thunk if you press the pedal yourself? I have a 23 also and it has a small rattle if it abruptly releases the brake pedal but I don’t notice any sound from it applying the brakes.

It’s braking, as described in the text. Try to break hard from at speed (keep safe tho) a few times. Your brake may have surface rust from disuse…. If it still persist. Go to a shop to check your brakes.

I'll test the brake pedal, but I've never noticed it. Maybe it's because I had this turned on so the brake was already engaged. With it on/off and each pedal, I'll do a few permutations and see if I can glean something from that too.

Cheers. I'm going to do a few tests, including the hard-braking/cleaning thing you mention.
