New 2026 or Used 2024 Model Y

Advanced-Psy | 2026-02-05 19:08 | 12 views

Hi guys, Trying to decide between a new 2026 vs used 2024 Model Y with 15k miles. I drove both of the models. Yes, the 2026 is more refined with less wind noise but is it really worth the price difference? $15,000 price difference after trade in/taxes. The 2024 suspension was bit more harsh but I am not sure it is significantly worse. Is there anything I can do to the suspension to make it better without voiding warranty? Any insight here is appreciated. Currently have a 2020 Mercedes GLE 350. Trying to make a decision bc my Mercedes is starting to rack miles. Thank you

I was in the same situation as you, checked out both a new and a 2023 Y (HW4) and ended up going with the older model. A used 2023 LR AWD with acceleration boost cost me $37k total, while a new Premium RWD was over $54k. The new features aren’t worth the extra costs for me when the legacy is already amazing value

Fit_Employment_2595 2026-02-05 19:14

You got money? Get the new one. You trying to save money? Get the 2024.

Ironsheik135 2026-02-05 19:16

This and if you go for old, look at least for hardware version 4, dont get HW3. Edit: i mentioned this because if you go older and get 2023 look for HW4

Fit_Employment_2595 2026-02-05 19:16

Yeah I'm assuming all the 2024s have hw4.

Advanced-Psy 2026-02-05 19:18

Yes, money isn’t the issue. It’s more about whether new is really worth the price difference.

LoneStarGut 2026-02-05 19:27

They do. Even some 2023 Ys have HW4.

LoneStarGut 2026-02-05 19:28

If you frequently have rear seat passengers, the rear screen in the premium trim may be worth it.

Fit_Employment_2595 2026-02-05 19:30

I usually get downvoted when I say this, but if you aren't in a hurry I would wait until AI5 comes out, the successor to HW4. I think I've heard later this year or next year.

svmonkey 2026-02-05 19:30

Are paying for FSD? If not, get the used one. At least, it has autopilot.

ORNGTSLA 2026-02-05 19:32

Will Tesla even be selling consumer vehicles by the time HW5 comes out? Lol.

Various-Story-5601 2026-02-05 19:32

This was me. I wanted the new one so bad, but couldn't afford 50k. ended up with a 2024 for 30k. Maybe I'll upgrade in a couple of years.

Fit_Employment_2595 2026-02-05 19:33

That's awesome. I paid 50k for my new 2024 lol oh well

Fit_Employment_2595 2026-02-05 19:34

Uhhhhhh I assume so

TheWylieGuy 2026-02-05 19:36

I’d say New since you say money isn’t an issue. And wait bit to see if they have truly added 4.5 to the model Y. If so that’s what you want. My guess is that will be minimum entry for unsupervised self driving; may end up being 5. We know 3 is a non-starter. 5 is gonna be vastly more powerful than 4, gotta be for a reason. In any event, the 2026 in everything I’ve read and seen is superior to any previous in comfort and ride. FSD won’t be any different for now. Definitely consider the 2026. If you are financing won’t make a massive difference; but could pay real dividends. In the end though, it’s a personal choice. Enjoy!

ORNGTSLA 2026-02-05 19:36

I would be very weary of buying anything new from Tesla at this point, especially the first year model of a new generation. Look how much new Junipers have already changed compared to the ones people bought on day one.

Fit_Employment_2595 2026-02-05 19:38

Oh really? What have they done to the junipers? It's been about a year right

ORNGTSLA 2026-02-05 19:39

Bigger screen, black headliner, possibly HW 4.5? Removal of autopilot but that’s a massive downgrade of course

Fit_Employment_2595 2026-02-05 19:40

Ah. I'm liking my 2024 MY so I've got a ways to go with it

Ok_Cake1283 2026-02-05 21:39

2026 have softer suspensions and is quieter. If money's not the issue I'd go for 2026. See if you can test drive it you'll know what I mean. It just feels more luxurious. I agree with the other comment on considering waiting until July 2027 for AI5 model if you're going to buy new.

Puzzleheaded-Race671 2026-02-05 21:59

I agree. Now all the hw4 owners are going to attack you, but it’s the honest truth wait for AI five

Puzzleheaded-Race671 2026-02-05 21:59

Yes it is very worth it and you’ll be happier honestly

Puzzleheaded-Race671 2026-02-05 22:00

The juniper has a much better ride both feel and quiet wise, the materials feel nicer. There’s also a bunch of new features, ventilated seats, ambient lighting black headliner front bumper cam new screen with better response and bigger, rear screen, hands-free trunk opening, and honestly, I like the look of the juniper more

Fit_Employment_2595 2026-02-05 22:01

They always say like oh if you're gonna wait for 5 you may as well wait for 6 and then actually wait for 7. Hw4 came out early 2023, we are already 3 years into it. We are way closer to AI5 than the start of HW4. thats just me, as a hw4 user who will be jealous when 5 comes out.

Puzzleheaded-Race671 2026-02-05 22:09

They’re just salty their cars will become irrelevant very soon. Fukcing jerks. 5 will be 10x better

Vtrin 2026-02-05 23:37

If you check my post history, I had a “difficult” delivery on my 26 Y AWD LR. With that in mind, there’s no chance I’d deal with a used car dealer over buying direct from Tesla (and probably wouldn’t deal with a new car from a dealership either). I’d chose new over used just to avoid the used car sales people. I did try to buy from Tesla used but that inventory moves quickly when they have it.

Robocup1 2026-02-05 23:40

The main differences- 1. New has Better suspension. 2. New has rear screen. 3. New has Ventilated Seats 4. New has Draining Frunk 5. New DOES NOT have Stalks - maybe the turn only. 6. New has the ambient light inside and the light bar outside. If money is not an issue, the new one seems worth the upgrade.

mushyspider 2026-02-05 23:49

How many miles are left on the 4 year warranty? I am not sure I will keep mine after the extended warranty period. They are expensive for repair. I love my 2026 model y, but purchased with the tax credit. If the 24 had FSD, I would choose that.

Advanced-Psy 2026-02-05 23:51

24 - 31 months/33k miles. It currently has 17k miles on it.

PrizeMeans 2026-02-05 23:55

Wrong. HW4 is already at the point of being more than good enough for most owners. HW3 owners didn’t have this luxury when HW4 came to light.

Chicken_Zest 2026-02-06 00:36

I guess I'm more frivolous than a lot of people here. I would have trouble justifying what I'm assuming is close to a 50% cost increase to get the juniper. The used car is only about 10% of the way through its useful life. The juniper is the better car, but by incremental improvements - not leaps and bounds. I would have trouble justifying it.

menntu 2026-02-06 01:03

You are so damn…practical!

anothertechie 2026-02-06 02:17

plus new ones don’t have autosteer

Sufficient_Ad3790 2026-02-06 10:32

Price difference can pay for upgraded suspension (mpp) when needed, FSD subscriptions, ppf, road trios etc.. and ‘24 has auto steer.

baseballandfreedom 2026-02-06 13:44

I had this same question and I ended up going with the 2024. Though if there’s one thing I wish it had was the front camera, just for better parking accuracy.

Advanced-Psy 2026-02-06 13:50

Thanks. Do you like the suspension?

officialjslreview 2026-02-06 22:43

I just posted about the same thing earlier today, considering the car you’re coming from, the new model y might be a better fit. I swear I’m not self-promoting but I made a video about this, you can check it out if you’re interested! https://youtu.be/-HEiz_PmLBE?si=cP5dUInBMi_pxXeO

baseballandfreedom 2026-02-07 01:21

I don’t mind it as much as I thought I would. it’s not super, but it’s not a dealbreaker.

Advanced-Psy 2026-02-07 22:13

Thank you , feel better
