Tesla Stock Surges as It Starts Offering Robotaxi Rides in Austin with No Safety Monitor - TipRanks.com

MarchMurky8649 | 2026-01-22 20:04 | 211 views

Looks fake to me: "only a small number of unsupervised vehicles are mixed in with a larger group that still includes Safety Monitors" - a small number, cf. 3 to 5 in operation at any one time? Sounds like one car to me! I bet they are very careful who gets to ride in it, if and when it is out there at all, and likely faked along the lines of the self-delivery stunt last year!

You hope

Wise-Revolution-7161 2026-01-22 20:11

Goal post moved again…

MarchMurky8649 2026-01-22 20:14

Further research suggests there is a chase car, which is what I expected. Totally unscalable.

Quercus_ 2026-01-22 20:18

Even if there's no chase car and it's actually unsupervised, remember this is happening in a very tiny extraordinarily highly validated area, where they've been mapping and dealing with any issues for a full year now. This is not evidence that this can scale outside of their heavily validated service area.

Bwunt 2026-01-22 20:21

FOMO. It's pumping Tesla like crazy and then nobody wants to sell underpriced, because there pool of potential buyers is so small.

gyozafish 2026-01-22 20:21

I can see you starving to death outside a grocery store because you couldn’t foresee that the doors would open for you.

PowerFarta 2026-01-22 20:28

Everything is about juicing the stock. Every milestone is just for them to get that sweet sweet liquidity

Particular-Break-205 2026-01-22 20:31

Wow that’s like hundreds of dollars of revenue

rolingua 2026-01-22 20:32

Perfect timing before a winter storm, we'll see what happens

DamiensDelight 2026-01-22 20:33

I can't wait for the ultimate lawsuits to bankrupt the company and leave every single sycophant investor holding the bags.

stackcitybit 2026-01-22 20:36

That's the craziest thing about this, even nationwide robotaxi coverage does not generate profit on the level of making/selling cars...which obviously their P/E does not support already. Not to mention they've promised owners the ability to take that revenue from them with their personal vehicles as robotaxis. So best case cannibalism worst case class action.

jlw993 2026-01-22 20:37

HOW HAS THIS NOT BEEN PRICED IN SINCE 2020 ?! How's a stock go up because of hype then go up again when a speck of that hype becomes reality

Specman9 2026-01-22 20:42

Tesla doing more Headline engineering.

Zippytang 2026-01-22 20:43

This won’t well

Ok_Subject1265 2026-01-22 20:44

They could definitely scale it a few more blocks though… maybe.

slowpoke2018 2026-01-22 20:44

NOOOO. Elmo would never do anything like that, he's an honest man and Tesla to the moon! Look at his track record!!! NYC to LA summon was done 10 years ago - oh, wait. It still hasn't happened! FSD also released 10 years ago - oh, wait. It's supervised and has killed many customers! Well Tesla is still the safest brand around - oh, wait. It disables door locks and traps you inside to burn to death in a crash, whoops! Roadster with rocket motors coming in '22 - oh, wait. It's delayed indefinitely AND no refunds! Hmmm, maybe he's not the massive genius people think he is and Tesla is really just a meme stock supported by suckers and fanboi's who drool at his every word? Nah. That couldn't be it

tazzytazzy 2026-01-22 20:45

When there's an accident, the stock will go up more because now they have better crash data so they can avoid the next one.

BringBackUsenet 2026-01-22 20:54

Thanks to an irreponsible press who still report on what they have to say despite constant lies.

nolongerbanned99 2026-01-22 20:56

Bad idea to harm your customers, especially when that harm is permanent.

nolongerbanned99 2026-01-22 20:57

Bk is inevitable here. House of cards from many perspectives while other automakers are getting better in these areas.

Shaggybrown 2026-01-22 21:11

Absolutely. Time to buy out of the money puts again. It’s like printing money.

Belgarablue 2026-01-22 21:20

"Tesla Stock Surges" because Felon Husk announces yet another impossible thing, that Morons will suck up. Car sales down worldwide, yet morons that "believe" will pump up the stock to yet more insane amounts. Kind of like the USA (and Husk) keep supporting a convicted Felon, pedophile, rapist, murdering, dementia ridden, narcissistic, syphillitic pile of Garbage as President.

Doublestack00 2026-01-22 21:22

They will never do what Waymo is doing with out better equipment on board.

Operation-FuturePuss 2026-01-22 21:25

Gotta throw something out there before earnings on 1/28...

slowpoke2018 2026-01-22 21:27

Dead men don't talk, so Elmo has that going for him

Parrallax91 2026-01-22 21:27

Yeah, I live in Austin and I'm not excited about this development.

Fuzzy_Inevitable9748 2026-01-22 21:30

That’s why the doors don’t open after a crash and the car self incinerates.

WhoisthisRDDT 2026-01-22 21:31

Short TSLA!

readit145 2026-01-22 21:32

I promise you no one buying Tesla stock knows what p/e means

slowpoke2018 2026-01-22 21:33

Another genius, 5D chess move by our soon-to-be trillionaire overlord

Still-Chemistry-cook 2026-01-22 21:36

I do not understand this stock.

Icy-person666 2026-01-22 21:37

The ultimate burn bag for secrets. Perhaps we are looking at the government sales wrong.

Icy-person666 2026-01-22 21:38

They are going to need a bigger penise picture.

sowhyarewe 2026-01-22 21:40

Chase car full of ICE to get rid of any evidence of a wreck

Icy-person666 2026-01-22 21:41

But still won't focus on the Epstein files. I would think that would be the real story.

Icy-person666 2026-01-22 21:44

But at least we are protecting the people in the Epstein files from consequences while going to war with Europe over a nearly worthless desolate chunk of land.

Belgarablue 2026-01-22 21:47

And I don't care if there are prominent Democrats in the files... Release them all, and jailed every child rapist/trafficker.

Born-Gur-1275 2026-01-22 21:52

Tat-um, da, tum, dumb. StinkyMusk has his way with customers. When did he say he's rocketing to Mars and that he'll live there? Couldn’t come soon enough. Oh, maybe he’s already there, and a flaying Optimus is impersonating him here.

Jaguarmadillo 2026-01-22 21:54

He has to make up for the huge money the diners were expected to bring in in epic bacon

Lowmax2 2026-01-22 21:54

"no evidence" lol you can go test FSD for yourself at any dealership in the US and see that it can handle nearly any situation at this point. It's working and it's scalable. Try the model Y. I did and it was amazingly smooth and didn't have to intervene once. The only issue I encountered was that it would occasionally park in the wrong parking lot near the intended destination. They're obviously still working some of the navigation kinks out since the taxi service is brand new. But In a few months time the service will be in every major city and will be safer than distracted, drunk, sleep deprived, road raging human drivers.

Bendy_McBendyThumb 2026-01-22 21:56

Praise Elon? Edit: it’d explain why every other company has a p/e, they all owe everything to him as the modern day Thomas Edison

Furion86 2026-01-22 22:00

It sounds closer to a tiny trackless tram.

Zari_Vanguard1992 2026-01-22 22:00

And how many crashes will be caused by the nazicabs?

-Bezequil- 2026-01-22 22:01

They are reporting earnings next Wednesday. It will likely be a bloodbath. They need this to pump TSLA past next week's losses.

nolongerbanned99 2026-01-22 22:06

Good to hear all the honesty here. In other forums there are people still insisting he is a genius

Brave_Nerve_6871 2026-01-22 22:12

How long before the first victim?

HadoBoirudo 2026-01-22 22:16

To be re-branded DeathTraps.com

Stonkz_N_Roll 2026-01-22 22:20

FSD will never go nationwide because it can’t operate in inclement weather. There’s a reason why Tesla and Waymo are operating in fair weather cities - computer vision doesn’t work if the computer can’t see anything.

etaoin314 2026-01-22 22:51

just make it elon shaped, he is the biggest dick of them all.

etaoin314 2026-01-22 22:55

i think its "Full Self Dying"

Outaouais_Guy 2026-01-22 23:01

I was just returning home and a blizzard appeared suddenly. As I was pushing my daughter's wheelchair through the snow, my mind wandered to what would happen to a robotaxi in that situation. Has anyone ever tried testing their system in snow?

PourSomeSugar69_420 2026-01-22 23:30

why hasn't CNBC asked kathy Wood these questions?

GhostofBreadDragons 2026-01-22 23:32

Earnings are next week. They needed a pre pump of the stock before the puffery in the earnings report that is short of last year.

No-Budget-9765 2026-01-22 23:42

It’s sort of like a meme stock.

000011111111 2026-01-22 23:43

Do not worry. Once he can borrow agesnt 1 trillion in space x stock, he will float Tesla for another 10 years of missed deadlines and broken promises.

TryIsntGoodEnough 2026-01-22 23:45

After reading the first paragraph of the article, they only mention removing people from "inside the vehicle"... Which means they probably still have someone remotely operating and overseeing the vehicle. Remember the safety driver was partially in the vehicle to fix it when the remote operator wasn't able to fix it/connect to the vehicle. They had to move the safety driver to the driver's seat because it was happening way to often and putting the employee in a dangerous situation when they have to get out of a vehicle in the middle of the road... So still isn't scalable if they still have to have an employee supervising the vehicle even remotely

TryIsntGoodEnough 2026-01-22 23:46

When they say "unsupervised" what they actually meant is no one inside the vehicle is supervising it, notice they only talked about employees in the vehicle, no mention of getting rid of the remote operator so it still is supervised.

KeyYogurtcloset5763 2026-01-23 00:19

Yeah, in 2024 Uber made like 23B in revenue and tesla made 47B selling cars. the premise that everyone will suddenly ditch their cars and use robotaxi services instead seems unlikely in the US.

No_Discipline_7380 2026-01-23 00:37

Turns out Elon did make sci-fi technology come to life: the suicide booth from Futurama

bflobrad 2026-01-23 00:38

I live in Buffalo, and last winter there were a bunch of Waymo vehicles around here for winter weather testing. There was no service offered, just testing.

makatakz 2026-01-23 00:39

Your anecdotal evidence is zero proof of its efficacy or its ability to operate safely at a high degree of assurance.

DocCEN007 2026-01-23 01:14

Those rubles always pour in when Elmo needs them. He's just a conduit in their plan to destroy the US.

Difficult_Limit2718 2026-01-23 01:38

Meme gonna meme

ThatBaseball7433 2026-01-23 02:08

Walk me through the benefit to Tesla of this being successful. They sell less cars? Less FSD subscriptions? Deal with more customer drama? It’s not like taxi cabs are known for being cash cows. This makes no sense.

Lucky_Hat_3656 2026-01-23 02:58

Or vertically

okokokoyeahright 2026-01-23 03:20

Tele-operated no doubt.

okokokoyeahright 2026-01-23 03:21

More like dozens.

Euthyphraud 2026-01-23 03:22

Yay, they may just have a chance to get there leg into what will quickly become a very large low-margin, commoditized industry with high fixed capital costs and tons of competition (many already way ahead). This is going to make shareholders so much richer! Right? Right!?

MrThing123 2026-01-23 03:46

Just another con Why's that other Tesla following us, oh that's the safety monitor, they follow us Yup that's never going to make money

Ok_Construction_1053 2026-01-23 03:58

Sure but they’ve been “ironing out the last few kinks” since 2016. It’s a good product, sure. It’s not yet unsupervised full self driving and it’s certainly not materially superior to Waymo in any demonstrable way at this point in time.

RefrigeratorTasty912 2026-01-23 04:11

So... a 50k car with a 50k fully redundant vehicle and salaried employees... What else are they going to do with all those unsold Cybertrucks?

Quercus_ 2026-01-23 04:19

There is no question that FSD is the best level to ADAS on the market, and that it does a lot of things extremely well. That's irrelevant for full autonomy. What matters for full autonomy is how often they encounter edge cases they can't handle. And we know that's still too frequent. Tesla obviously knows it, because they haven't yet released fully autonomous unsupervised self-driving. The latest reporting from Austin is they've only been rented about six cars at a time, which to me sounds a hell of a lot more like a publicity stunt than an engineering trial. And they've had six fender benders in the last 6 months- that's one fender bender per car per 6 months. That ain't ready.

foilmethod 2026-01-23 04:40

You seem upset.

Accurate_Motor_6373 2026-01-23 04:44

Tesla just started with no safety monitor.... while many robotaxis in China already have no safety monitor long ago....... and Tesla stocks pop cause of this?

4RealzReddit 2026-01-23 04:46

I heard Toronto was being considered as one of the next cities for waymo.

Vidi_89 2026-01-23 05:20

Q4/25 Numbers will be bad. He has to come up with further lies to pump the share value..

Common-Violinist-305 2026-01-23 05:48

with chaser cars 😂

TheYungSheikh 2026-01-23 05:54

How would NYC to LA summon even work if there is no one to plug in the car along the way?

FaluninumAlcon 2026-01-23 09:21

I'm sure whoever wants a ride is also a trump supporter (meaning they are a complete moron).

MarchMurky8649 2026-01-23 11:28

In other news, British comedy legend Rowan Atkinson launched his new [Mr Bean's Mini Cab](https://c.tenor.com/KW_4CI9Odt8AAAAd/tenor.gif) service in London yesterday, also with no safety monitor in the vehicle.

MarchMurky8649 2026-01-23 11:32

Employees - plural - good point - so by moving the 'monitor' to a car following behind, with its own driver, they have added at least one employee, added one vehicle, both increasing costs, and I would estimate at least doubling the risk of an accident, as now either vehicle can cause one, and the 'monitor' has poorer visibility, along with additional lag. NO wonder the share price shot up on this news!

Stonkz_N_Roll 2026-01-23 12:43

They’ve started lobbying within Toronto, but have no plan for expansion https://torontosun.com/news/waymo-not-toronto-bound-anytime-soon-company-confirms#

RefrigeratorTasty912 2026-01-23 13:05

Well... seeing as there will be 2 robotaxis for every 1 in service, and multiple salaried employees... They need charging too! They can FUSC your ASS car all across America! Full Unsupervised Super Charging Let them FUSC your ASS car... LET THEM!

reddit-time 2026-01-23 13:48

Employee: “Hey, boss, the finances don’t look good. What are we gonna do?” Elon: “Pull the safety monitors out of some robotaxis like I’ve been telling you to do for months!” Employees: “But boss…” Elon: “Just do it.”

Outaouais_Guy 2026-01-23 13:53

That's interesting. Thanks.

Distantstallion 2026-01-23 15:07

Tesla investors must be the dumbest people on the planet

Opening_Wolverine_89 2026-01-23 15:25

Why not?

Maleficent-Pause-613 2026-01-23 17:21

I am not sure of the profit margins, the vision is not to just replace cabs but to change the vehicle ownership landscape using the umbrella of autonomous transport. If anything of that sort happens, people can lease a car for a day, a week, a month, or just change the decision to purchase, all options open at any given day.

Parrallax91 2026-01-23 18:24

I'm happy to be in a test market for Arby's Venison Burgers and Taco Bell Turkey legs but not a moving vehicle with questionable safety.

NoticeMobile3323 2026-01-23 21:13

This is idiotic

Ok-Bill3318 2026-01-24 02:55

Nonsense. We can replace one driver with automation plus a driver in a second car.

EventAccomplished976 2026-01-24 10:59

No one understand how this stock works. I think a lot of bigger short sellers got burned back when tesla was still delivering things people thought impossible (yes, there was such a time). And now they don‘t touch the stock anymore, while everyone else seems to be content to sit on their stock when the company is doing badly and buy in whenever there‘s a tiny spec of good news.

vAnkenH0ff3n 2026-01-24 23:14

He's a sales man at best not an inventor......

licancaburk 2026-01-25 10:08

It's funny that everything is already priced in multiple times.

Bendy_McBendyThumb 2026-01-25 13:12

Exactly, Edison was someone who rode the coattails of actual inventors, just like Elon and other billionaires like James Dyson.

4RealzReddit 2026-01-27 02:17

They need it in bad weather somewhere. I would have expected it to be Waterloo over Toronto. I had only heard Toronto in some way.
