It's amazing how many bars Tesla manages to raise... None of them are *good* bars to raise, mind you, but... they're sure raising 'em!
Boats were the bar for bad mid-life crisis investments, congrats Tesla for making boats the more sound financial mistake!! Happily, boats are also far more enjoyable cash sinks, too!!

I think people were misled thinking they were saving the environment. Not my more or less true for a tesla vs any other ev. And on whole I don’t think pure EVs deliver in that promise when you consider material resources use, precious metals and lack of recycling the battery

I can't just let this slide, these big oil talking point has been debunked. There is absolutely a benefit to producing the energy in a central location as opposed to in each individual ICE vehicle. The battery materials are 99% recyclable and their are a growing list of companies doing just that. Their lack of complexity reduces the environmental costs of production. We literally just invaded another country cause some idiot thinks it will bring down the cost of gasoline.
Seriously, piss off with your BS.

Ok here is a cleaned up statement. EVs trade local emissions and oil dependence for upstream mining, manufacturing emissions, and grid dependence — often with a net benefit, but not always.” And maybe learn how to have a polite discussion or educated debate and sharing of opinions rather than being an uneducated and crass caveman tough guy.

The range gets more accurate the closer it gets to zero. This was a Musk demand to create an algorithm to fudge the range without people ending up stranded.

Tesla is infamous for overrated range figures. Almost every independent YTer that isn't financially tied to Tesla (e.g. have TSLA shares and/or share referral codes) reports the same findings.
My Audi and Cadillac EVs both outperform their official range figures, as does Ford, VW, Nissan, Hyundai, Mercedes, BMW etc.
The only brands that are iffy are Polestar and Rivian, which while not underperforming usually meets or just falls a few miles slightly off their official figures.

Entry price of wakeboard boats went from $40K in 2000 to well over $100K in 2025. After 25 years, mine only lost 50%. So while not appreciating, they definitely had a good couple of decades..
TryIsntGoodEnough
2026-01-12 00:48
The issue is the cost to maintain a wakeboard boat... I have some friends who had them and they were constantly having issues with either the ballast system not working (sometimes not pumping the water out of them) and a bunch of engine issues since Wakeboard boats often put way to much straight on the engines.

OP managed to find both the worst time to buy it after Tesla had massively boosted prices during the post-pandemic parts/vehicle supply shortages (and Tesla boosting influencers in the youtube recommendations algorithms) and the worst time to sell it given that used MYP prices are still sitting at $25k (in the US, OP is Canadian), maybe on account of the refreshed MYP MSRP seeing a $6k price hike since OP sold theirs. I wouldn't be surprised if they traded in their car, making the situation even worse.
I would say that now that the US tax credit is gone, used MYP prices may have held up a bit better since the BBB's passing, but OP's in Canada, so not sure exactly if that's had any influence on used vehicle prices there.
As to OP only getting 50% SOC from 60 miles of driving (vehicle is rated at around 300 miles of range) that's about 40% of the claimed range; I have to imagine that this is the range during winter when they sold it, likely during rain / snowy weather, probably driving around 80 mph on the 60 mile commute, and I imagine OP has snow tires on it since the summer tires it comes with would be dangerous in the winter. It's also feasible that OP wasn't plugging the car in at night or pre-conditioning the vehicle and the battery was cold at the start of the commute. This can eat electricity as it tries to heat the battery; albeit the heat pump should have helped there; but would have lost efficiency the colder it got. Still, 60% range drop off in winter, if accurate, is surprising.
Regarding insurance... I mean I'm pretty sure that it was well known in late 2022 that Teslas were seeing higher insurance rates. Making it worse, the MYP is considered a performance vehicle that's subject to higher insurance rates.
I'm glad OP got out of their swasticar, but yeesh, this was just bad decision after bad decision. Sounds like OP has no trouble affording it though, which is ironic. If one doesn't care about money, then why does one complain about bad financial decisions that cost them money?

? I pay $150/mo for my 2023 Model Y Tesla insurance. Not great, not terrible, about what SF quoted me 2 years ago.
In 30,000 miles I've done one tire rotation and bought a bottle of washer fluid concentrate to replace that. No complaints, really.
Feels good to have paid $40k OTD for a car with similar performance of an S5.

30,000 miles in my two years old Model Y AWD. No complaints, yet. Phenomenal to finally get a 4-sec class car I've always dreamed about for $40k OTD, that's ~$16,500 in 1990 money, half the cost of e.g. the 3000 GT-VR4 then.

it's all facts. I was in the market for Teslas 2022-23 and passed on the 2022 prices since they were just so out of whack and FOMOd all to hell.
I looked at the MYP but got a SF quote and saw it was way too much to insure, so in late 2023 I settled on a Model Y AWD, with list price $16,000 under the 2022 pricing plus another $6000 off that.
Plus the 2023s had $7500 off courtesy the Democrats so the car was like half the cost of the 2022s on an OTD basis.
I did OK.

Complaining like a grumpy old man... It's an EV, it will lose range in cold weather. I've no clue what you've done to break it, but I'm sure it wasn't on its own. And it lost value because it was bought and sold at the wrong time.

yeah this dude is definitely coping. I saw my model 3 that I paid $40K for back in december 2020 reach a high of like $62-65,000 in late 2021/early 2022 when gas prices spiked because of russian ukraine war, I could have sold it for a massive profit and bought a beater, but I ended up buying another tesla at the absolute worst time right before massive price cuts in late 2022 for reasons I won't discuss here, but I paid like $50,000 for the car at the time which is hilarious now given its a standard range model 3. I could've bought that car like 6 months later for $10K+ less with the ev credit and prices where they were. OP prob bought the model Y around the same time as I recall they were 60k+ at the time.
