>What Musk really means here is that Tesla is disabling the safety feature that stops you from texting and driving in certain situations. He is removing the “nag” that detects phone use. That doesn’t make it legal, and it certainly doesn’t make it safe in a system that still requires constant supervision Yup. Pretty much sums it up.
Make their day, FSDers!
Lawsuits inbound.
Cops everywhere salivating over easy tickets.
Sadly people will believe these lies and they or others will get to enjoy a premature forever box in the ground because of it.
Yikes. Steer clear and look both ways!
What could possibly go wrong??
will elon pay the ticket, i dont think so
“Depending on context of surrounding traffic, yes.” So that could mean if there are no other cars on the road, it is safe. I guess Musk thinks the corporate puffery defense will continue to protect Tesla. It will be interesting to see how the other lawsuits go
They can also prepay their funeral expenses and update their wills. Unsupervised FSD is not ready. The system may no longer flip out when you look away, but yikes. People are going to get hurt
Honest question- do you think it’s safer to send a text with FSD engaged or without FSD?
I see people doing stupid things literally every day because they are on their phones while driving and none of them have FSD vehicles. Blowing through red lights, slowly drifting out of their lanes only to suddenly jerk back into the lane, needing to be honked at because the light changed I wish police would ticket them
That is not what he said. At all.
Well, his goal is to pump the stock and that has certainly been achieved. He added about 25b$ to TSLA‘s value with this. He needs to sell a lot of FSD licenses to justify that pump.
Im good with all of them getting tickets and licence suspensions. Driving is one of the riskiest things most people do on a regular basis and being complacent kills.
Elon probably realizes they'll never get held accountable for any accident that may occur because of it.
Thankfully none of the circumstances around a moving vehicle change. /s Elone is a genius!
The public needs to get serious about this dangerous motherfucker. Every time Musk does or says shit like this his cult believes it and we along with our our families are the ones sharing the road with these idiots.
I wish I could believe that. I’ve lived in too many places where cops don’t give half a shit about cell phone use. Hell, the Macomb County Sheriff in Michigan went on TV once and said something like “We won’t pull anybody over just for using a phone…”

Even though it’s illegal in most states. Just what the World needs, more drivers being distracted.
Not under this current Administration he won't.
The lawsuits are starting to hold his company accountable at least.
No, it's illegal.
Sounds like people need to elect a sheriff that cares about the safety of people on or near roads... Im in Australia and our cops would love to hand out more tickets for distracted driving.
When you're out of bullshits to promise you just take away existing restrictions to seem like you have something new. Big shitty divorce dad energy. Promised and failed to take you to Disneyland one too many times and now knows he need to come up with some new lies as incentives to entice. "Hey if you come stay with me this weekend I'll let you watch the porn channel and go to bed without brushing your teeth! Pizza for breakfast!"
In British Columbia, Canada, [Part 3.1 of the Motor Vehicle Act](https://www.bclaws.gov.bc.ca/civix/document/id/complete/statreg/96318_06#part3.1) makes is clear that using an electronic device is prohibited while "driving or operating a motor vehicle on a highway." "Electronic device" is defined in Part 214.1 and specifically refers to "a hand-held electronic device that is capable of transmitting or receiving electronic mail or other text-based messages," among other definitions. The police are often on the lookout in Greater Vancouver for people texting at stop lights and will happily give out tickets. Use of phones while driving is called "distracted driving," and in BC, if you're caught, you'll get a CDN $368 fine and 4 points. With our point system, if you have four points or more within a 12 month period, you'll also have to pay a driver penalty point premium on your insurance, which works out to about $252. So ... regardless of what fElon says, you'll get a ticket in BC that will end up costing you about $620 ... and that's for the first infraction only. By the way, while this doesn't apply to FSD, the Motor Vehicle Act of BC currently prohibits the operation of Level 3, 4 and 5 self-driving vehicles. Currently, Level 2 self-driving vehicles are allowed in BC, provided the driver is ready to take over at any time.
There will be no Carve-out for what is considered Distracted Driving - a subset of our Impaired Driving legislative viewpoint in Ontario, Canada. Sorry Elon... don't think you are selling as many Teslas here lately, anyway.
I suppose knife?
No. No I can not. If I look at the Tesla screen for 20 seconds, even though it shows the road, the car flips out.
Musk has just (re)invented breaking the law.
I trust this advice is for all the other drivers when a Tesla is nearby....
Doesn’t FSD start screaming at you if you aren’t looking at the road with your hands on the wheel?
but the can’t pull out if my garage go around the corner and stop at my front door?
Yes, for the drivers and pedestrians! I should’ve made that more clear.
I’m sure @ing him on Twitter will get you out of a ticket! /s
That explains the noodly ass tesla driver I followed today.
Should Ford be held accountable for allowing me to text and drive in my car? What makes it any different for Tesla?
Window tint. If you live where you cant then that sucks.🤣😂🤣😂
The article and this post are indulging in a marketing campaign by Musk.
JFC…
On principle, I’m sure they would. The problem is that speeding has become culturally embedded as the cardinal sin of driving, since it is an easy black/white issue when it comes to enforcement.
The implication seems to be that he's removed that, at least in certain situations.
Enron Musk claims a lot of things.
Billionaire baby is losing it - he now terminally believes he's above the law.
Just another Musk sales pitch then, thanks for saving me the click.
We have RFK Jr trying to roll back the eradication of communicable diseases, and Elon trying to roll back road safety features in cars. What a timeline we live in.
Entering the 2nd Dark Age due to regression.
Unfortunately the Musk hate is too real no one will ever be willing to actually look into how much safer FSD is compared to 75% of other drivers.
**Collisions are not accidents**
The CEO of Ford isn’t publicly encouraging people to do it.
I say this all the time, except I use the term “crashes”. Accidents are random events. What happens in Teslas is the predictable result of irresponsible behavior.
I just realized two days ago that this was true I couldn’t believe the car was letting me drive without paying attention. Seems ..… what’s the word? Risky
The cops would have to look up from the text they’re composing to catch them though.
The thing is, Ford’s documentation and public statements are very clear that _you **are** driving_ even when the Level 2 ADAS is engaged. Ford’s systems will also detect if you’re texting while driving, and potentially shut down the ADAS if you’re not paying sufficient attention. Ford doesn’t want to get sued because someone thought the vehicle would drive itself and caused a crash. The statements by Tesla’s CEO, and changes to the ADAS safety monitoring features both can be considered to _actively encourage_ the driver to engage in distracted driving. If a driver is using the ADAS and their phone at the same time and causes a crash, it isn’t unreasonable to argue that Tesla is partly responsible — the company _said_ it was safe to do, and the ADAS didn’t warn the driver that they were engaging in unsafe behavior. So in a lawsuit situation, Tesla will get dragged into it. Even if they don’t have to pay out a settlement or judgement, it still costs money (that they shouldn’t have to spend) to defend against these suits.
If this was in any way whatsoever safe, the system would have been certified at level 3 or 4 a long time ago. It's adaptive cruise control with a lane assist and autopark.
Tesla keeps shipping features faster than regulators can respond. The tech moves ahead; the safety framework limps behind. That gap is the real risk.
