the tesla lane hold is sweet. i sold my teslas but if i had the option for a simple lane hold for road trips that would be great! forget all the stupid fsd autowipe phantom crap the lane hold was really well done. uncouple the good parts and remove the crap.

yup, I drove the 1,500 miles to Dallas for the eclipse and my Model Y's AP was good enough, even tho I had free FSD for a month then. Prefer the better speed control of AP, and FSD is still regressing in that area apparently.
I believe this is a mid size SUV (considered almost full size in Europe). It would likely be several categories above Tesla in the price range in the rental companies using their logic.
So Tesla is pulling stupid stunts like steel vs aluminum bonnets, and no radios to shave pennies off the build cost, while still putting $000s of dollars worth of cameras and AI gear into all the cars which are switched off via software. Next level genius.
It's a side effect of EU homologation rules. It's basically mandated here for all new cars. That also means this particular feature delete won't apply if they try and offer this outside the US. All seems very half baked to me.
You can probably thank the EU for that. It's a mandated feature here and it's most likely cheaper to just bake it into every car than faff around with X versions.

So no lane centering and no auto steer? That's just stupid, as is the removal of the seat adjusters. I mean, ok, remove the passenger seat adjustments and move those to the screen but the driver's seat??

You’re confusing the two different lane keeping technologies. The one that is EU mandated is Emergency Lane Keep Assist which just warns you if you are about to depart your lane without the indicators on. Lane centring is the level 2 ADAS system which can be used to keep the car centred in its lane whilst using adaptive cruise control. That one is not EU mandated.

Then why would a feature delete that isn’t a mandated feature in the EU not be permitted in the EU? I genuinely think you’re confusing the two different forms of lane keeping. The one Tesla has removed is the steering part of so-called “Autopilot”, not the one that tries to push you back into your lane if you accidentally drift out of it.
I mean they only "self charge" if you first use petrol to get them moving and then use the brakes. BEVs do the same trick when you brake too.
LDWS: Lane departure warning system (the annoying bongs when you cross a line) CDCF: Corrective directional control function is the other (the steering part). ELKS requires both (unless the car has hydraulic power steering) Pretty much every car manufacturers saw this legislation coming and just paid MobilEye for their system (including Tesla). Tesla then disabled the safety systems in the MobilEye stuff to force the CDCF to be permanently on at the P85D launch (something they did because they were so far behind on the X at the time and wanted the hype of pretending the car could drive itself). However going back to my original assertion. The reason we have lane keep systems in even the cheapest Dacia, is like airbags, or seatbelts before that, most "features" in modern cars are regulation driven. (Including electrification) In this case, once you have CDCF, lane keep is a zero cost BOM item, as Tesla so aptly demonstrated back in 2014.
Toyota already sold all their Tesla holdings. They and Daimler were early round investors in Tesla. Not only did they give Tesla money, their engineers were instrumental in the production design of the Model S. Daimler engineers on sabbatical did a lot of the heavy lifting in the actual Model S engineering design. (Everything apart from the BMS and infotainment). The Model S is still arguably the best car Tesla has ever released and the irony is a lot of that was due to Daimler and Toyota's involvement. (Henrik Fisher's design flair didn't hurt either!)
yeah I had a friend get the $50k Rav4 Tesla compliance mashup and it was a great car. 40kWh RWD IIC. That was where I was going with this, I think Toyota has great ID across the board (and that dealer network), while Tesla is not really a good car company, Elon's heart really isn't in it anymore.
In a decade have these vehicles changed at all other than dropping features?
Teslas charge from external energy from the grid, and are also dependent on fossil fuel power generation. They won't move unless you use external power to get them moving.
BEVs need electricty wow a novel idea! They dont necessarily need grid energy from fossil fuels by the way. Mine charged today purely from solar power off my roof. That same solar system now the car is charged is busy exporting power to the grid and charging my home storage depending on prices available. Oh and your average fossil fuel power stations is a LOT more efficient than an internal combustion engine.
