The vehicle isn't specifically identified as a Tesla, but the use of "autopilot" is telling. The car drove through a marked crosswalk with a crossing guard, flashing amber lights, a police car with its emergency lights on, *and* children waiting to cross. By the way, the city mentioned in the article is Delta, BC, Canada, which is a municipality south of Vancouver. We have *tons* of Teslas in Greater Vancouver--unfortunately.

Scumbag driver

babypho 2025-09-06 04:19

The shitty part is you're not even supposed to use autopilot on local roads.

>“When stopped, the driver told officers the vehicle was in ‘autopilot mode,’” said Delta police. **“In British Columbia, it is illegal to operate a vehicle in autonomous mode.** Drivers must always remain in complete care and control of their vehicle. School zones demand your undivided attention — children’s safety depends on it.” Of course there is no *autonomous mode* yet, but if you're driving on autopilot/FSD (Level 2) without properly supervising, then it certainly is driving without care, or maybe even reckless driving. And if you're not stopping Autopilot/FSD and taking over the instant it does something stupid then that's also bad driving. But there is no autonomous mode in Teslas yet. Of course some Tesla drivers do seem to think it does exist. ICBC has previously said that using Smart Summon in a public area is illegal. You have to be physically in control of the car, outside using an app is not permitted.

Yeah, they clearly used their local Bay Area drivers for inspiration.

It’s a pity that Tesla is so technologically inept that they can’t implement geofencing.

MattGdr 2025-09-06 11:08

The driver shouldn’t have been doing that anywhere near a school. JFC.

There seems to be two of those stupid cyber trucks here in Ladner and Tsawwassen now. Anyone gormless enough to buy one of those is dense enough to pull something like this.

How many people need to die for the cult of a stock?

Ha? Driver was sitting right there behind the wheel watching school zone signs, flashing lights, crossing guard, kids and the police cruiser. Yet he ignored all of this and decided to conveniently blame auto pilot. How neat! And then useful idiots like yourself are jumping on the topic and spread the feces around. The way auto pilot works is simple. If it sees people crossing the street, it would stop. If people are just standing on the sidelines it proceeds cautiously and allows driver to intervene if driver understands that these people are not just hanging around at the sidewalk, but actually going to cross. Auto pilot sees school zone sign and speed limit and obeys. After that it’s up to the driver to interpret. I’ve been driving through school zone daily and it’s always up to the driver to make a final decision. And going at 15mph it really is not a death machine that you’re describing.

These morons are gonna kill us all.

Sadly more people die each year from human error than from autopilot/FSD

Jacktheforkie 2025-09-06 22:54

In the uk those things would require a C1 lorry licence, anything with a MAM (maximum authorised mass) of 3.5mt-7.5mt is considered a C1 lorry, though most people who hold that licence got it through getting a class C (7.5t-32t) or a C&E (up to 44t) the C test is exactly the same as C1 just in a slightly bigger lorry

I'm surprised Canada hasn't ordered Tesla to disable FSD in Canada as this discussion seems to suggest it should not technically be allowed

Engunnear 2025-09-07 15:12

Nobody wanted to get in the way of the plucky startup that was showing Big Auto that they could make EVs profitably (even though they couldn’t).  Now it’s that nobody wants to be responsible for destroying a trillion dollars worth of value in retirement funds (even though letting it go on will only make the situation worse).  If politicians weren’t feckless pieces of crap, Tesla would not exist as it does today.

New_Half_6055 2025-09-07 18:12

Except that in some states you're required to stop for people waiting to cross. Or in situations like this. A machine doesn't understand the shit that you wrote. You're giving it too much credit.

beren12 2025-09-07 21:30

This combo makes it worse because so many idiots think fsd is better than it is.

beren12 2025-09-07 21:31

Maybe it shouldn’t be allowed to drive if it can’t manage traffic laws

beren12 2025-09-07 21:32

Something something bigger the bubble bigger the pop

Engunnear 2025-09-07 21:41

Exactly. Every day this bullshit is allowed to continue, the worse it will be when it all collapses.

New_Half_6055 2025-09-07 23:35

You think?

Neceon 2025-09-09 16:51

Note: FSD is not legal to use in British Columbia. Autopilot, IE level 2 systems, are because they are supervised. This guy obviously wasn't supervising very well.
