Are you sure you want to deal with Tesla service organization?
I mean there are a lot of horror stories about US dealerships in general, but Tesla cares even less about their customers.

I dont know about the Hyundai but I love the Y and the 3.

Ai4, the thing that Tesla said is incapable of fsd, is listed as a deciding factor?

You can buy a Model Y and monetize it by destroying it with a sledgehammer on Youtube. Guaranteed hits.

I can't speak to the Model Y, but I love my Ioniq 5. It charges so fast, even near 80% and above. I often hit 85-95% before I can get my young kids through the bathroom.
Highway Driving Assist is not very good, but still useful on long trips. You won't get complacent.
Other minor gripes are the missing rear wiper, slightly wide turning radius, and lack of a manual way to activate battery preconditioning in winter (you have to navigate to fast charger). Also, the whole ICCU fiasco—so far so good. It's not a deal breaker, but buy a jump starter as insurance.
When my lease is up, I'll probably buy a used Ioniq 5.

Its a hat trick of terrible. I suggest buying a car from a "car" company...something TSLA does not claim to be.

That’s exactly why Tesla continues to generate decent sales numbers - people think of a car as a commodity.

What are the reasons the hyundai is better? Everything I’ve read says the cars are basically even, with Tesla getting the edge in charging and Hyundai getting the edge in handling/suspension.

It’s better than ai3, and will hold value better imo (although I recognize a car should not be bought to hold value). It will get the new features in full for longer was the logic of mentioning it.

Thanks for the intel! Sucks that drive assist isn’t great, how is the charging network? I plan on using it as a road trip car between 3 and 5 times per year, and I know Teslas have their supercharging network.
Drive assist isn’t mandatory, just trying to get the best car.
Also, thanks for not being a dick and actually being helpful with your response. Rare to see around here surprisingly.

One of the main reasons for getting an EV is for the lack of overall maintenance. I don’t have experience working with tesla service nor any other dealer’s service shop - I always use a local mechanic.
My understanding is that all EVs pretty much need to be repaired at dealer - is that accurate?
Real-Technician831
2025-08-26 03:52
LOL! No!
That’s the lie that Tesla is telling you.
It’s true that there is no engine oil changes, and no timing belt, etc ICE related things. But that’s it.
Everything else in an EV is about the same maintenance as with any other car. One of the biggest reasons why Teslas fail inspections so often in countries that have them is this illusion of no maintenance.
Oil change is about one quarter of work time spent on car maintenance, rest is checking things.

Oh and forgot to answer the last question.
EVs can be repaired at any mechanic shop which has qualifications for EV work.
But, the bad news is that typically only place that have qualifications is the local dealer.
Some places are fortunate to have third party repair shops, but that is rare, and they may have difficulty in getting parts.
So find out, before you buy.
And seriously consider more reliable makes than Tesla.

The Ioniq 5 can use superchargers with an adapter, so the two cars have roughly the same charging network now. Supercharging is a bit slow (100 kW) due to conversion from Tesla's 500 V charger to the Ioniq 5's 800 V battery, so it's not my preferred option.
The extra network coverage is really helpful. I take ~3 trips a year, 500 miles one way. Sometimes, we're out of sync with the car and need a rest stop on between CCS chargers. A year ago, we'd stop again an hour later when the car needed charging. Now, we can find a supercharger and stay in sync.
I do use the drive assist and it helps. It just gets confused under certain pavement conditions and I'll have to turn it off for a while. Funny enough, the lane departure system will yell at the car when the lane centering gets confused and drifts. They must be independent systems.

The Ioniq 5 charges quite a bit faster than Model Y on 1000 V chargers and similar on 500 V chargers.

Think about it this way:
* Handling and suspension matter *every moment* that you're driving the car*.*
* Charging matters when you're looking for a road-trip charging stop, so a *handful of times a year* at most.
