Would you buy this? '22 model Y, AWD, LR, 80k miles. Though trip reports saying ~450-666 wh/mi

withfries | 2025-08-02 03:19 | 21 views

Looking to buy this Model Y. Pretty high miles, but not worried since EV mileage doesnt reflect wear same as ICE. 2022, worth it? Looking at about $25k+taxes. Drove okay, auto steer works, AC works. Battery warranty for another 40k miles

Never buy a used EV. Lease a new one

Pentanubis 2025-08-02 03:24

I would personally prefer not to support Nazis.

Putrid_Tadpole7139 2025-08-02 03:25

Good thing your not buying the car …

Suitable-Activity-27 2025-08-02 03:31

Why never buy used EVs? Wouldn’t that defeat the whole environmental aspect of the car if there is a legitimate issue with used?

Shootels 2025-08-02 03:33

Hard pass on Tesla. Find a better company to do business with.

AwesomeShikuwasa77 2025-08-02 03:34

No. If you buy a used EV, have an independent company check the battery. Then you can make an educated decision if it is worth the price. There is a reason why manufacturers don't give you unlimited warranty for batteries and exchanging one is a nightmare.

HiramAbiff2020 2025-08-02 03:42

This is a good point, people only think of sustainability with the initial purchase.

Charming-Tap-1332 2025-08-02 03:42

You are in the wrong sub. You want the Elon controlled subreddits. TeslaLounge teslamotors You'll get all the biased propaganda you're looking for.

ScoobyGDSTi 2025-08-02 03:44

There is no real environmental aspect.

Computers_and_cats 2025-08-02 03:44

No from me for multiple reasons. Has the Intel Atom CPU and lead acid battery. No clue how you are pulling those wh/mi numbers unless you are driving really stupid with it. You can get a 23 with less miles for the same price. Also in general as a 23 Y LR owner I can tell you the car kinda sucks beyond powertrain. At 44k miles my Y keeps falling apart due to crappy glue and the interior sucks ass. You sit in the seat for the first time for an hour and it is fine and doesn't seem bad. You sit in it for hundreds of hours and you realize how much the seat sucks. I'd test drive other EVs. There are plenty of better options out there. **(EDIT: Just noticed you have the AC set to the lowest setting. That is hurting your efficiency.)**

BrainwashedHuman 2025-08-02 03:49

I agree. But at the same time people who buy new cars every 2-3 years defeat the whole environmental aspect of it. They treat cars like trading in the iPhone for the latest and greatest.

banditcleaner2 2025-08-02 03:54

Brother this sub is heavily anti-Tesla, do you think anyone here is gonna say yes lol?

withfries 2025-08-02 06:38

It's pre-owned and it's eligible for rebates, so I hope I'm not totally supporting the guy, directly at least. I also believe the rest of Tesla are decent people who made a great company and car. Elon afaik was mainly involved in the Cybertruck and we all know how disastrous that was.

withfries 2025-08-02 06:40

Haha, I am trying to keep an open mind and get as much feedback as I can! This is a lot of money to me. Even if all comments but one are biased, even one that could be helpful is worth it to me. An 80k mile car, especially one that's only 3 years old, is giving me pause, so I wanted to get some opinions. Thank you for looking out!

[deleted] 2025-08-02 08:41

Cheap nazi cars are still nazi cars.

Monk315 2025-08-02 11:51

"Would you buy this?" It's literally in the title.

marmoset 2025-08-02 12:03

You’re going to get people flipping you off wherever you drive. Is saving a few bucks worth it?

MarchMurky8649 2025-08-02 12:50

The more people refuse to buy even second-hand Tesla cars, the lower the prices will get, and this will reduce sales of new cars, because, if you think of the extreme case, ask yourself who is going to buy a car that depreciates to zero as soon as they've bought it? I feel strongly that nobody should be supporting Elon Musk for a number of reasons. For a while I was involved in the distribution of USAID food to people who I honestly believe would have starved to death without it. I literally drove [sacks like these](https://medium.com/@zaylendp16/trump-administration-to-burn-aid-food-which-is-enough-to-feed-1-5-million-children-for-a-week-d8f6522c1959) containing wheat, corn and beans, from Guatemala City to a remote orphanage. As well as working as a driver for them I often helped cook the food. And when it was ready, as I had the loudest voice, I would be the one to stand outside the dining area, and shout, at the top of my lungs, "¡A comer!", and shortly afterwards, hundreds of children, from the orphanage and from nearby villages, would then come running to eat this food, made from ingredients, from sacks, emblazoned with "USAID FROM THE AMERICAN PEOPLE". While there, I met volunteer US doctors, who had visited villages too far from the orphanage to eat the food we provided. They told me harrowing stories of trying to treat conditions they had never experienced before, caused by a chronic lack of protein. So, when I say I know that the USAID programme was keeping children alive, well-fed and healthy, I speak from experience. Elon Musk drove the efforts to destroy this program. By at least one estimate [millions will die](https://www.msnbc.com/top-stories/latest/sickening-evil-musk-bashed-usaid-cuts-study-predicts-millions-die-rcna216832). Boycott his cars, including the second-hand ones, help bring down Tesla, reduce his riches, and you might be helping to make it less likely he gains so much political influence in the future. At the very least you will be refusing to reward him after what he has done.

Grunge4U 2025-08-02 15:05

That's way over priced, I wouldn't touch it. You can get a much better used EV for less than that and you don't have to be identified as a Nazi sympathizer. Look for a 22 ID.4 in that price range it will have similar range, better features and far better build quality.

Charming-Tap-1332 2025-08-02 15:24

Ok, I've got a lot of car knowledge. Let me be honest here. $25k is more than I'd recommend spending for an 80k miles Tesla Model 3. ~$20k would be my limit. Second, whatever car you buy, avoid anything with accidents, salvage title, theft, lemon, or frame damage. Those are all check off boxes in car history for any of the major sites like CarGurus, Cars, and Autotrader. Get a pre purchase inspection on any vehicle before you buy it. Finally, unless you have private/home based level 2 charging available or installable, then don't buy an EV.

davidc1300 2025-08-02 17:52

Definitely lease. Dont buy used. Been a tesla owner since 2014.

withfries 2025-08-02 23:09

If I may reframe it - is this a good value for $18k? That is how much I may be able to have it for. After I receive all credits and such, $18k ($21k including taxes)

withfries 2025-08-02 23:11

I live in a big city people flip me off anyways for following traffic laws 😂 I agree fuck Elon. I just need an electric car. My Prius is on its last legs, and i do my own maintenance. It would be very nice not have to go to the gas station anymore, or do oil changes any more, or have the random part go out (recently did water pump, prior did spark plugs). Pretty confident I can keep her going for another 200k miles, just would be nice to have a smart modern car.

withfries 2025-08-02 23:13

I think the AC part is throwing off the numbers, too. We were sitting in a parking lot with AC for several minutes. Then once we started driving, AC was still on. Im sure this affected the numbers wrongly. Same thing in my Prius. If we're sitting in the car with AC, the first mile always shows a terrible mpg. But it averages out the next 10 miles. I doubt we have the car a good chance to reflect it's efficiency

Grunge4U 2025-08-03 00:09

You'd get those same credits on a used ID.4 or Ioniq 5 with a lower price point and get a much better EV. Tesla's have depreciated way more than any other car company and for good reason. 18k after credits is still way over priced.

withfries 2025-08-03 01:04

You are 100% correct, I actually do see an ID.4 for $22k. Lower mileage too. This means I can have it for ~$16.5k. You are right, I need to consider this. Thank you, I have not yet seriously considered an ID.4 or Ioniq 5. Ioniq 5 is a little funny. Apparently not all Ioniq 5 have the superfast charging architecture, certain years it was only the RWD one. I need to research more to find a good one.

Charming-Tap-1332 2025-08-03 01:18

For that price, it's very unlikely to have a clean title. What's the history? ■ Accidents? ■ Salvage title? ■ Theft? ■ Lemon? ■ Frame damage? ■ Number of owners?

withfries 2025-08-03 02:19

Per Carfax: No accidents Clean title/no theft/not lemon No frame damage per Carfax 1 owner, bought in CA and being sold in CA Being sold by a reputable dealer in their pre-owned inventory (large dealer, may have been a trade in, not these random small lot dealers It sounds like price is good? Worth the risk?

Charming-Tap-1332 2025-08-03 02:22

Yes, it appears to be a fair deal.

ILikeWhiteGirlz 2025-08-03 09:26

Wouldn’t a sub that is against Tesla be biased propaganda instead of a value proposition OP is looking for?

marmoset 2025-08-03 13:14

There are other brands , with way less baggage. Shop a little longer.

[deleted] 2025-08-03 13:54

Get a used Corolla. I can't understand why anyone would even be looking at this Nazi brand. Low moral compass.

Charming-Tap-1332 2025-08-03 14:42

No. And by the way, you should be careful about posting in RealTesla. Just posting here almost always leads to being banned from ALL the Elon Musk controlled subreddits that you're following.

longinuslucas 2025-08-03 14:56

When batter capacity reaches 80% of the original capacity, we consider it to be the end of life of the battery. Typically, that takes 8-10 years regardless of how you use the battery. The resistance of the battery also increases which will reduce power and how long it can sustain max power. So in 8-10 years, the car will be completely worthless. As to the environment concerns, any billionaire’s weekend jet trip emits more CO2 than any individual can save by driving EV for their entire life. I wouldn’t worry about that.

ILikeWhiteGirlz 2025-08-03 17:12

Never experienced that.

SentinelZero 2025-08-04 01:03

No, CEO is an impulsive Nazi and Teslas are crap. Hardest of passes. Also the Model Y is a lazy rehash of the Model 3.

syrvyx 2025-08-04 16:50

Hope you can afford repairs and being without transportation for periods of time...

[deleted] 2025-08-05 14:08

I wouldn’t take it for free.

withfries 2025-08-06 00:04

UPDATE: It sold, not to me :) Thank you for all your words and help. I ultimately decided the mileage is too high, and it doesn't have all the updates and features I would like for my next car. Perhaps a newer Model Y, or perhaps a Hyundai/Kia with the Comma Ai add on.

SirPeebers 2025-08-08 01:57

Get another Prius. We have a Prius that is falling apart currently as well and I can't wait to trade it in for a newer model, hoping there will be some pre-owned 25s by the time we start looking next year. I personally really like the way the new Prius looks.
