"would like to assure you that the Tier 4, ‘WhisperWatt Super-Silent’ portable generator currently in use to provide temporary power to the construction site meets all pertinent standards and codes and was the quietest, least impactful unit we could locate" Weird they didn't use a battery....or, I dunno, set up a temporary power connection like every other construction site.

Wait the screens weren’t for like a grand opening event? That’s messed up if those are permanently obstructing people’s windows.

Epic Bacon At The Tesla Diner

sertanksalot 2025-07-30 15:54

My sincere question is, how did that even get a BUILDING PERMIT, since it clearly blocks the neighbour's view an unreasonable amount? A building permit should have reasonable consistency with the community and not de-value other properties.

XKeyscore666 2025-07-30 16:00

Is that a typo, or has Tesla really been working on this restaurant since before February 2024?

You must be a serious Elongelical or didnt read the article at all or both. Those massive screens with noisy cooling fans on the back almost in reach of your balcony would piss anyone not riding Elons dick off. Not to mention the traffic and round the clock noise. Also if someone started construction work at 4am next to my house I would be taking matters into my own hands.

Tind_L_Laylor 2025-07-30 16:16

True, but this is more like Seinfeld's "The Chicken Roaster" episode, with non-stop flashing lights ruining your life. But more than that, you suddenly find yourself living next to a Nazi hangout lot. That's... not ideal in a residential neighborhood.

oregon_coastal 2025-07-30 16:20

Nuisance lawsuits incoming...

FrogmanKouki 2025-07-30 16:22

They had concept art for it around 2021.

xt1nct 2025-07-30 16:24

I would contact the city. Talk to other neighbors. Look at local rules.

PoilTheSnail 2025-07-30 16:26

Laws don't apply to felon or tesla.

WhoisthisRDDT 2025-07-30 16:28

Why? fElon business only bothers one building next door, that's nothing to complain about, just a handful of people who can't go to sleep. Have we forgotten what he did to the people and the environment in Brownsville, TX? fElon doesn't care about earthlings, only if you are Martians.

XKeyscore666 2025-07-30 16:46

Jesus. How much did they spend on this total? All for an embarrassing flop that will probably be closed by the end of the year.

Musicman1972 2025-07-30 16:54

Most buildings would look better than the back of an LED panel though. That's a wholly objective complaint they're making that almost everyone would agree with.

dtyamada 2025-07-30 16:56

Generators are common on construction sites but putting it right next to the residential building seems thoughtless and inappropriate.

Horror_Response_1991 2025-07-30 16:59

Bribes.  Rich get to do whatever they want.

SherbertCivil9990 2025-07-30 16:59

Way before. The stupid part is in that time they built another  large supercharger lot in Santa Monica that’s actually nice and even has bathrooms and covered charging spots. They would’ve had no pushback if they just copied that design and maybe added a little cafe.

SolutionWarm6576 2025-07-30 17:00

I was curious about fire code too. Like, if they have to get a fire truck ladder in some of those rooms etc.

messick 2025-07-30 17:04

I see you are super familiar with the neighborhoods that share a border with LA and West Hollywood...

Charming-Tap-1332 2025-07-30 17:07

Does anyone know why this part of LA doesn't have any realistic zoning laws?

messick 2025-07-30 17:09

I acknowledge that in boring parts of the country those things might be uncommon, but this is Santa Monica Blvd on the West Hollywood border. \> Also if someone started construction work at 4am next to my house I would be taking matters into my own hands. Lol, sure chief. Not sure you'd make it very long in that part of town if loud noises at 4am are something you are going to get worked up about.

Red-FFFFFF-Blue 2025-07-30 17:23

Remember the X on the old Twitter HQ? Zero permits, no approvals, and multiple code / regulation violations.

RG54415 2025-07-30 17:33

It's called money, when you have it you can distort reality to your choosing in the US.

JRLDH 2025-07-30 17:34

WTF? It’s not Nimby if your new neighbor puts up a 40ft tall screen right at the property line. That’s a combination of shit behavior and lack of reasonable regulation.

Ill_Somewhere_3693 2025-07-30 17:37

I’ll put money on it, those ‘jumbo screens’ will be coming down in a matter of weeks. I’m sure the gimmick has already worn off even for the most Elon fanboys. Who still goes there to check out 20 year old movies & old Star Trek episodes?

Lacrewpandora 2025-07-30 18:11

Yes generators are used, but as a general rule the subs don't like using them - they believe the poorly regulated voltage hurts their tools. Its usually a priority to get temp power and ditch the massive 10kW total jobsite generator as fast as possible. What you'll mostly see are much smaller generators meant for specific tasks...usually associated with site work outside the walls of the building.

[deleted] 2025-07-30 18:11

How on Earth did they get a permit for this? Right in front of Apartments? Is there an apartment to the left of the one pictured? They wouldn't have any view at all. Insanity.

gojiro0 2025-07-30 18:14

Pretty on-brand. Remember the absurd "X" on top of the Xitter building in SF?

AceMcLoud27 2025-07-30 18:19

From what I'm hearing it's already starting to fall apart, so let's not worry too much.

bikesnotbombs 2025-07-30 18:52

Don't forget the methane generators in memphis

friendIdiglove 2025-07-30 18:56

I’m guessing the apartment owners and/or renters objected to the project, probably going to the city council or even going to court, where Tesla prevailed. Because the generator and screen placement seem like a deliberate and personal “fuck you” from Elon Musk.

fossilnews 2025-07-30 19:10

It could have been a building built there with the same effect.

SpiritualPurple8659 2025-07-30 19:11

Couldn't one of the residents just open a window and use a large pole to push the video screens over?

Few-Risk8406 2025-07-30 19:28

A building would have proper setback, not built on property line. SO yeah, the view would have been blocked, but it wouldn't be so close and have massive fans that generate noise all day and night.

fossilnews 2025-07-30 19:38

Not all buildings in la have a setback. The fans are possibly a violation depending on decibels.

pl0nk 2025-07-30 19:46

I liked how when they first installed it they had it flash at maximum brightness to test it out.  Is Xitter pronounced sh-tter?

gojiro0 2025-07-30 19:58

It is!:D

dtyamada 2025-07-30 20:22

That makes sense. Thank you for this explanation.

pzerr 2025-07-30 20:38

Likely was zoned for high-rise apartments that would provide a similar loss of view had one been built. But to me looking at the back of a blank 'fuck-off' electronic sign seems far worse then neighbors with balconies and possibly plants in place. Screw off Tesla. Putting a flashy billboard in a mix residential neighborhood is just crude and gaudy. No class with that company and no class if you drive one.

BugVsWindshield 2025-07-30 20:54

And the car owners are constantly revving up their engines.

Beezelbubba 2025-07-30 20:59

They should be happy the screens block the view of the 24/7 incel convention taking place right next door to them

Effective_Anxiety_12 2025-07-30 21:14

Only buildings that have been grandfathered as “conforming non-compliant”. You can’t build new buildings without respecting the setback.

xMagnis 2025-07-30 21:35

The building permit details say there will be no excess anything, so I would think excessive light would be easy cause to stop. Also the plans call for a 45ft tall bamboo screen around the rest of the inside perimeter, so they likely will lose the rest of the view soon. Too right they must be pissed.

xMagnis 2025-07-30 21:41

Install your own strobes pointing directly at the patrons. You know, because you're in a party mood too. Anyway. There's lots of rules they are probably violating, collect all times the video doesn't shut off at exactly 11pm, the garbage on the street, the traffic. Interestingly they say there will be no traffic congestion as per the plan. Give all the complaints to the city, and to Tesla and keep doing it. Not that the screens will go away though...

daveo18 2025-07-31 03:29

When you’re as rich as Elon you don’t need permits…

daveo18 2025-07-31 03:33

I can’t imagine Tesla stumping up for cash for something like this. My guess it was built under a licence agreement to use the brand. And if it wasn’t, you really have to wonder what the fuck Tesla is doing, as a supposed auto company, dabbling in the fast food space.

brintoul 2025-07-31 04:48

Surely this isn’t the first time you thought to wonder what the fuck Tesla is doing…?

Withnail2019 2025-07-31 05:46

Just wait for the first food poisoning incident, shouldn't be long.

Withnail2019 2025-07-31 05:47

I'm sure zero people actually go there and watch a whole film

Withnail2019 2025-07-31 09:03

And we know he really is that petty and spiteful

XKeyscore666 2025-07-31 16:08

Still. On their end they probably had a whole team of project managers and other professionals making six figures each having meetings about this for 4+ years. And that’s the best case scenario. There were probably multiple Elon K-hole thoughts that were brought halfway to reality before he got bored with the idea and said “never mind, let’s do this bullshit instead”.

friendIdiglove 2025-07-31 16:52

Build first, buy forgiveness later.

Time to go vigilante

Withnail2019 2025-08-02 15:31

It's ridiculous, that should never be allowed

[deleted] 2025-08-02 19:41

Totally not a cult.

Fishbulb2 2025-08-04 19:06

How the heck did this get permitted and allowed? What ahole politicians would allow this?
