I'm thankful they put the stupid light bar on it. Now it's easy to identify decent people who were conned by Musk from nazi sympathizers who would spend their money to support the p o s.

> Could be Elon and some other Tesla exec were asked about the new "affordable" model on the Earnings call this week and they both answered "it's just a model Y". No need to speculate. EDIT: I see the article itself makes the same quote. Guess this is just another case of an article's title not matching its content.

JRLDH 2025-07-25 13:56

I'm fascinated how long it takes to ruin a brand. People apparently still consider Tesla "Luxury" because the S was a $100k halo car a long time ago. Transforming your volume model into the cheapest, most bare bones, dis-contented, Econo-budget product will back-fire. Who buys a high margin top-spec $$$ Model Y if it's also sold as a super cheap model? They are killing their margins and changing their reputation with this strategy.

Key-Beginning-2201 2025-07-25 13:59

Low quality car about to get even lower.

Demonshaker 2025-07-25 14:00

I would say they aren't changing their reputation and that is the main problem.

Key-Beginning-2201 2025-07-25 14:00

Good. I love this for them.

Model Why

[deleted] 2025-07-25 14:09

Now that trumps EPA is bringing us all back to fossil fuels and dismantling the EV infrastructure, what’s the point of wasting money on a Tesla? It’s called financial efficiency, Elon.

praguer56 2025-07-25 14:11

Supposedly they're changing the nose to look more like the Model 3, which is also problematic. So Model 3 headlights and no light bar and no light bar on the rear end. I don't see the brand lasting more than a few years. Cybertruck is failing miserably. Model Y sales have slid, even with a "new" model coming to market. The Model S update, if that's what you want to call it, is meh. They're doing nothing but putting more money in Elmo's pocket.

ShrugsforHugs 2025-07-25 14:27

There was a time that having a Tesla was a status symbol. Even if you had a "cheap" one (Model 3/Y), you got some of the rub of the higher end S and X models. Now those higher end models are just numerically irrelevant, so trying to flood the market with entry level versions of the already cheap model is just going to drag the status of the brand even further down. A bunch of Moms in my upper middle-ish class area of DFW have Ys, because they have a perceived status somewhere above a Rav4. If Tesla tries to flood the market with stripped model Ys, none of these moms are going to want their Ys anymore. The perception of the Y is going to go from being the affordable model of a "premium" brand to the nicer version of a poor person car.

y4udothistome 2025-07-25 14:31

Same shit different day or Different smells same shit

wongl888 2025-07-25 14:40

So Tesla will just drop the price of the Model Y to make it a budget car? Genius.

punture 2025-07-25 14:41

Maybe make the older Y design the new “budget stripped down” version and keep the current Y as it is. Like how apple does this with SE. That way they don’t have to significantly change the factory.

astoriaocculus 2025-07-25 14:57

The best thing they could do (beyond firing Elmo very publicly) is create a new sub-brand or super-brand to get the Tesla/Elmo stench off their cars. I will never buy a Telsa and will judge anyone who does as someone who does not give a shit about politics or someone who is actively a Nazi sympathizer. There are many other cars to buy. Elmo was problematic even before he walked into the White House.

DDS-PBS 2025-07-25 15:06

Imagine if they just tried to be a normal car company. Cut out all the fake FSD stuff. Just make cars. Don't do all the political and Nazi stuff. Just keep sending out the message of "Most two car+ household could easily switch over one of the cars to electric, we want our car to be the one you buy." No illusions of FSD. No thermo-nuclear proofing. No Nazi salutes. Just. Sell. Electric. Cars.

Enough-Meaning1514 2025-07-25 15:08

Not only the materials but the craftmanship in Teslas is horrible. A friend received his Juniper 2 months ago and his car's carpets were all bulged, like, you see the problems the moment you open the doors. This tells me that Tesla has zero QA on their cars. It is "best effort" only. When he showed this to the dude who did the delivery the dude he said "open a ticket to Tesla, there is nothing I can do". So much for customer satisfaction.

praguer56 2025-07-25 15:11

I have a 2022 MYLR and two neighbors each have Ioniq 5s. The Tesla's interior is so much nicer than the plastics in the Ioniq.

th3bigfatj 2025-07-25 15:12

>"open a ticket to Tesla, there is nothing I can do".  spoiler alert, no one is going to do anything. Drive super far to the service center, someone will iron your mats or something. It won't fix anything, but they tried. PS your car will somehow get a scratch in service (maybe you should consider more carefully when using service in the future, tesla didn't budget much for warranty work in an effort to show higher profit margins)

Purplebuzz 2025-07-25 15:20

Complete with Nazi Grok.

neonmantis 2025-07-25 15:28

Aside from the fact that the board are puppets, they can't fire him because Musk is responsible for 90% of the stock price.

neonmantis 2025-07-25 15:31

But their vehicles are legacy EV already. There is nothing special about a Tesla. Whether you want a cheaper EV, one with better range, better service, less depreciation, better build quality, top speed etc etc there are plenty of options available. Once the Chinese EVs take hold they are really screwed everywhere outside of protectionist US.

LizardKingTx 2025-07-25 15:50

Sure bro

rhedfish 2025-07-25 15:51

Got that Dodge Neon flair.

grampalearns 2025-07-25 15:54

There's also a $12,000 difference between those two cars

LightMission4937 2025-07-25 15:54

It would be all junk, like normal.

Difficult-Tennis-514 2025-07-25 15:56

When the Chinese made one's were available the qa was much better ironically.

schtickshift 2025-07-25 16:03

It should be called a Doge. It sounds like Dodge but also it’s been decontented as much as possible.

__slamallama__ 2025-07-25 16:11

>Who buys a high margin top-spec $$$ Model Y if it's also sold as a super cheap model? This is exactly why brands like Toyota created Lexus, and why BMW bought MINI. You're totally right. This move would degrade the value of all their cars. It's nuts that their product planners are even considering this.

[deleted] 2025-07-25 16:56

Toyotas Nissans and Hyundais come with much more useful features on upper trim levels though. Such as head up displays, heated windshields, heated steering wheel, massaging seats, 360 camera view and parking sensors..

Inevitable_Butthole 2025-07-25 17:39

Tesla will quickly be the Nissan leafs of the road lmao

meatbag2010 2025-07-25 17:49

It's just what you want to do. Take your best selling car and strip out anything decent to make it even cheaper. Which then kills perceived value of the brand and resale value of any existing Model Y's out there.

CoffeeInSpace23 2025-07-25 18:07

I have the exact same car as you and have had every Tesla in the line up and I disagree. A friend of mine who owns a clothing business and knows a thing or two about materials confirmed my suspicions. Tesla used some of the cheapest lowest quality vinyl materials in the game. A full vinyl interior costs Tesla no more than 100 bucks in material and craftsmanship for the seats.

torokunai 2025-07-25 18:36

My take, too. GOP is reversing 20 years of environmentalism’

Like Tesla, like Elon. All show, no substance. Looks shiny, full of shit.

The_JSC 2025-07-25 21:34

The last 2 words sum up Tesla ownership. "miserable experience"

Neat_Alternative28 2025-07-25 22:13

You think reinstalling all the old worn out tooling to make the previous version is no significant change?

punture 2025-07-25 23:06

Yes? They have the exact schematic of the old machines. Much easier to set up than coming up with a totally new line for a new car. You can argue that just producing the stripped down highland Y is easier. I agree but the point is that they should make a distinction between the budget model vs the Y.

[deleted] 2025-07-26 02:21

From the people who brought you a $50k car with zero creature comforts, abundant road noise, and incredibly cheap feeling interiors, we present something somehow worse for less!

[deleted] 2025-07-26 02:23

I agree. When I see the newer refresh it’s clearly someone who has seen Elon spiral and still chose Tesla over superior alternatives

That-Whereas3367 2025-07-26 10:02

W@e get the Chinese made ones in Australia. They are far better built.

TimChr78 2025-07-26 14:03

A lot of the build quality issues seems to be with the American made Teslas - the Chinese and European seems a lot better.

eclwires 2025-07-26 14:11

Your daily reminder that Tesla is not a car company. Tesla happens to make EVs in order to obtain carbon credits and government subsidies.

praguer56 2025-07-26 14:21

Don't other car companies do this? I mean, Chevy has a base Tahoe, then LT, then Z71, RST, Premier, then finally the High Country. From a distance they all look almost exactly the same except for some added chrome or no chrome, branding, and wheels. Does buying a base Tahoe devalue the High Country? I suppose Tesla could do the same with the Model Y and I thought I read that this base Model Y will not have the front and rear light bars and fabric seating surfaces.

__slamallama__ 2025-07-26 14:33

>Does buying a base Tahoe devalue the High Country? Yeah it does, but differentiating those into different models or brands is very expensive. It's a big cost/benefit calculation. For Tesla though they already have terrible margins on those cars and lower cost models will degrade that further, meaning they need to sell tons of them. Since they are not able to sell tons of cars, this car car will end up cannibalizing some of their existing customers into low margin sales, and losing the high end sales because they don't want to be associated with the low margin ones (though frankly I'm not sure any Tesla customer today cares about who they're associated with so could be wrong here) Big picture though is that cheap cars only make sense if you can sell a lot of them and Tesla hasn't had sales growth in over a year.

praguer56 2025-07-26 14:38

Thanks for the added color and you're right about selling cheaper models while sales are continuing to slide. That makes no sense.

runthepoint1 2025-07-26 17:27

Tbf they went from manufacturing all the world’s crap to manufacturing the world’s everything. They as a whole should know what they’re doing

Maximum-Objective-39 2025-07-26 20:46

Not gonna lie. I like the look of the Prius Prime a lot more than the model 3. Latest model looks like - what if mass effect made a car?

Comfortable-Salad-61 2025-07-27 17:03

What are you going to take out of the model Y? Just have all the software locked down and cheaper wheels?
