The high-selling Model Y is crucial for both Elon Musk and Tesla, but a half-hearted reskin of the car hasn’t reversed the company’s sales woes. Would a complete overhaul have been a better bet? Read the full article: [https://www.wired.com/story/it-looks-like-the-tesla-model-y-refresh-has-bombed/](https://www.wired.com/story/it-looks-like-the-tesla-model-y-refresh-has-bombed/)

Fuskeduske 2025-07-23 10:26

Well, maybe they shouldn't have made it ugly... I was not a fan of the old model, but the new one looks somewhat worse...

demon_of_elru1 2025-07-23 10:29

Tesla is done. They won't even around in 5 years.

Patient-Expert-1578 2025-07-23 10:30

If by overhaul you mean a new CEO that didn’t actively support hamstringing EV related government subsidies, then yes.

Hi_Im_Ken_Adams 2025-07-23 10:40

It boggles the mind that Elon thinks a few cosmetic changes constitutes a refresh. Tesla could have at least made a major change to the exterior design. Hell, even offering a some more paint color options would be welcomed.

GhostofBreadDragons 2025-07-23 10:40

Nah the energy section will keep them going. The supercharger system they already have set up will be like gas stations and oil pumps at the same time. Those will continue to provide income until they need replacement.  Not enough to justify the present stock price, but enough to keep Tesla around.

girthbrooksIII 2025-07-23 10:40

Rightttt

TemperatureFlaky1463 2025-07-23 10:42

Unfortunately it is uglier and more "cybertruck-ish" which doesn't do it any favors. The highland 3 facelift looks much better in comparison. Also, no meaningful powertrain updates + the elon of it all.

Blacksmith_Several 2025-07-23 10:43

So, let me guess, Tesla meme stock has gone up

mtnman54321 2025-07-23 10:43

Last line of the article - Model Y is Model Yesterday. 😂😂😂

allgonetoshit 2025-07-23 10:47

But the Tesla cult members told me the reason the old Y was slumping was that the refresh was around the corner?

Quiet-Resolution-140 2025-07-23 10:48

Such an uninformed comment. Didn’t you see the Tesla diner? They’re about to revolutionize the hot dog seller market.

wheresmyflan 2025-07-23 10:48

I genuinely can’t tell the difference between one from a decade ago and one from today. In fact, I can barely tell the difference between the models of *any* given year. They look like they are stuck in maybe… 2017?

CivicSyrup 2025-07-23 10:49

you are just jealous you can't afford one 🤣🤣🤣

SolutionWarm6576 2025-07-23 10:50

If Elon didn’t go for the CT route, and went with more with what Slate is doing, with an affordable EV pickup, with accessory upgrades. They’d be making a killing off of those.

oregon_coastal 2025-07-23 10:51

"Let's take design references from one of the biggest designs failures ever produced, the Cybertruck."

kodenavnjo 2025-07-23 10:52

Found a cult member

oregon_coastal 2025-07-23 10:55

I am still laughing about that place. Took about as long to build as the Roadster 2.

Red-eleven 2025-07-23 10:55

Don’t forget the nazi love too

BraddicusMaximus 2025-07-23 10:56

I can, I just chose the better ***car*** despite sticker on my Mach-e being higher than a 3/Y. Unfortunately this means I don’t have issues with panel gaps, warranty repair battles, ghost braking, paying for features I’ll never get to use, etc. which frequently reminds me that I chose to miss out on the Tesla ownership experience.

meases 2025-07-23 10:57

Such long hot dogs they have there, or extremely short buns. Idk the hot dog picture just wasn't very proportional.

Marco_Memes 2025-07-23 10:58

I honestly have to agree here. In the car selling space it’s a disaster but their basically the gold standard for chargers in terms of reliability, have by far the largest network in the US, and every EV manufacturer that sells cars in the US is switching to their own NACS charging plug, largely to be able to use their chargers. I doubt that’s going anywhere anytime soon, unless the company gets desperate for cash and has to sell the network to a competitor

Imaginary-Risk 2025-07-23 10:58

A perfect blend of bland and boring

Agafina 2025-07-23 10:59

This article is pretty much garbage, no actual numbers just hearsay. No wonder Tesla shorters lose so much money if this is the kind of tripe they use to direct their investing decisions.

RioRancher 2025-07-23 10:59

Anything Musk associated is going to be unpopular

SC_W33DKILL3R 2025-07-23 10:59

Didnt Musk fire off all the supercharger team, which also meant project were cancelled and contractors not being paid.

allgonetoshit 2025-07-23 11:01

Imagine being that stupid.

c1884896 2025-07-23 11:01

I am not a fan of Tesla but the model 3 refresh looks pretty good. The Y, on the other hand, is an absolute abomination that reminds me of the cyberturd. With Elon’s behaviour, the EV credits gone and the clean credits they were getting from other manufacturers evaporated, tough times are ahead for Tesla.

Rastadan1 2025-07-23 11:02

Yes. Let's not forget the repeated Nazi Salutes.

AndSoISaysToTheGuy 2025-07-23 11:03

And the hot dogs make themselves. The chef is only there for legal reasons.

transcendanttermite 2025-07-23 11:03

For some reason, my initial one-word descriptive impression of the “refreshed” model y is: thermostat.

I-Pacer 2025-07-23 11:03

Outside of North America that’s not the case. The charging network in Europe is excellent and Tesla could disappear here with no real loss to the EV driver.

AquaRaOne 2025-07-23 11:06

Well this isnt a new gen model y, every car maker makes mid life cycle updates like this. A few visual changes, 1 or 2 new features, thats it

lt1brunt 2025-07-23 11:06

Looks like a cup of water. Very bland, probably looks that way due to restrictions with the gigantic press and keeping cost down. Tesla car interiors are the worst I ever seen. You pay all that money for something with no style which looks like a prison cell.

Robo-X 2025-07-23 11:07

Exactly it’s not the redesign. It’s was just overshadowed by a white rightwing sympathizer, writing unhinged conspiracy theories on twitter, supporting a wanna be dictator and openly supporting white wing party’s in Europe. Who would have thought people hate nazis? But he will not resign and he will bring down Tesla with him.

Marco_Memes 2025-07-23 11:07

Sure, outside of the US that’s the case. But inside the US it’s not. I don’t support Tesla but them leaving the North American charging market altogether would be like a company twice the size of Ionity shutting down, they’ve got over 27,000 stalls here and for better or for worse are easily the largest fast charging network in the country, and in a not insignificant number of cases their the only good option. It’s a lot harder to just sell that off or shut it down

Low-Possibility-7060 2025-07-23 11:08

Right? I feel the same, the old one looked like a frog but the new one is plain ugly and the rear looks like Walter White’s car.

AquaRaOne 2025-07-23 11:08

The tesla marketing model and car lineup was completely fine, until elon killed all the goodwill the brand had with his stupid antics and meddling in politics.

grayskull88 2025-07-23 11:08

They just won't be a car company any longer. Which they already claim they aren't. We'll see how they fare without their core business.

scavno 2025-07-23 11:08

It’s a T Ford. The fact that you get it in more options than black is crazy!

Hzntl 2025-07-23 11:08

Hot dog market disruption. Revolutionary thinking.

musschrott 2025-07-23 11:09

AOL is also still around, so is Yahoo...

Dipluz 2025-07-23 11:09

Not a surprise. The car brings nothing noteworthy new for the customer. Wheres parking sensors, longer range, heads-up display, ventilated/massage seats. Just to mention a few things. Companies who dont innovate dies fast. Ontop of this the new look looks ugly incomparison to the old look imho. Tesla has had many years to continue bring new features to the car but Elon has been busy playing politician, moving the company to Texas because of yet again politics.

Weird-Ad7562 2025-07-23 11:09

Tesla is a software company, remember.

AquaRaOne 2025-07-23 11:09

If you cant tell the difference between the prefacelift and the postfacelift, you need to get your eyes checked. It looks worse imo, bug clearly quite different

Fuskeduske 2025-07-23 11:10

The old one just looked like a vertically stretched Model 3, the new one looks like the new one looks like they wanted to make it look like a blend of robocop and a cybertruck The old one was more of a wife car, now i don’t know who would want it

Withnail2019 2025-07-23 11:11

They just look dated now

Low-Possibility-7060 2025-07-23 11:11

Nazis I guess.

Withnail2019 2025-07-23 11:12

They dont make any money on charging, quite the opposite.

Withnail2019 2025-07-23 11:12

There is no money in charging.

I-Pacer 2025-07-23 11:16

Ok. Hardly enough of a business to sustain a trillion dollar market cap. Very much a niche business.Car chargers in one country (maybe two if Canada doesn’t object to spending money at an American charging business). The comment I replied to simply stated that nobody can compete with Tesla’s charging business. That’s not true. In Europe there are many worthy competitors.

Fuskeduske 2025-07-23 11:16

Actually… For all the bad Nazi’s did, one thing that was important to hitler was style, they’d rather have designer uniforms than uniforms that could protect them in a firefight…

Metsican 2025-07-23 11:18

The car isn't the issue. Check out Engineering Explained's recent Tesla video. Jason loves his car; he hates the deep, negative impact Elon has wrought on the US.

zedk47 2025-07-23 11:19

Tesla is not a car company. It's a fast food company, with robotservers instead of underpaid students

Metsican 2025-07-23 11:20

The Mach-E is less politically charged, for sure. Nobody thinks it's better, objectively.

laserwaffles 2025-07-23 11:21

Weird question, what actual software has Tesla company made that isn't either associated with another Elon brand, or the cars

Metsican 2025-07-23 11:22

They would be need to overhaul the highest level of management...

PM_ME_MASTECTOMY 2025-07-23 11:23

I’m actually surprised at home many I’ve seen on Long Island. Like you still bought it despite how ugly it is and what Elon has done? Weird.

OldTimeyWizard 2025-07-23 11:24

Simple mid-cycle refreshes usually occur in the first couple years. After 5 years on the market most other auto makers are looking forward toward releasing the next generation.

halfty1 2025-07-23 11:25

I would argue that they did make a major change to the exterior design, especially since this is just a refresh not an all new car. It just wasn’t a good change.

Pugs-r-cool 2025-07-23 11:31

Something about it makes it look a lot more like the Chinese EV's that're flooding the European market at the moment. Look at the Xpeng G6 (yes, that's a real car name), it feels like this new tesla and that car are both knock-offs of each other, and they both look ugly as a result.

halfty1 2025-07-23 11:33

Well yes, but that hits on another one of Tesla’s issues- they let their cars sit on the vine and die without an all new replacement (see S and X, the Model 3 is also getting up there in age). Doesn’t change the fact though that this is just a refresh and not a brand new Y. Tesla will of course say they don’t need to replace them because remember Tesla iS nOt A cAR CoMpaNy.

rkcth 2025-07-23 11:34

I do, it looks a hell of a lot nicer.

R1tonka 2025-07-23 11:41

You show some god damn respect for the aztek. That car held the distinction of being the ugliest car ever created for OVER TWO DECADES until the cybertruck came out.

Weird-Ad7562 2025-07-23 11:42

I'm not sure that Leon knows, either. He's the one who said it.

BassesHave4Strings 2025-07-23 11:43

Long Island is the Staten Island of the suburbs.

bassbeatsbanging 2025-07-23 11:43

*This is testing the patience of even the most gung-ho of Tesla’s perma-bulls. Wedbush Securities tech analyst Dan Ives wrote a cautionary post on X in early July, urging Tesla to stop Musk’s roving political eye with a fatter salary.* Yeah, cause he's so strapped for cash, that'll definitely fix the fact he's a racist piece of shit. Why don't we just fast forward to the inevitable conclusion where the entire world just gives all our money to Elon?

One-Entertainer-4650 2025-07-23 11:44

The car lineup was designed by the original founders not elon, The only vehicle elon was hands on from start to finish was the CT. The founder of lucid originally designed the roadster, 3, and Y. Remember elon bought the title of founder.

Kqtawes 2025-07-23 11:45

Is this sarcasm? They are the fastest depreciating cars globally losing on average 55% of their value after 2 years.

Low-Possibility-7060 2025-07-23 11:46

Makes sense that Elmo took the front of the Cybertruck and the back of the Aztec to create this really ugly and consequentially bad selling thing. It’s like a minus times minus equals plus thing but he didn’t get that doesn’t apply to sums.

-Celtic- 2025-07-23 11:46

But he is smart enough to leave his echoes Chamber and come to see what normal people talking about . Or maybe he is lost ...

Randommaggy 2025-07-23 11:46

The new one looked bad enough that I guessed that it was a third rate Tesla copy before I walked around it. A shitty copy of a copy of a mid brand.

uxd 2025-07-23 11:47

It’s not a good looking car. And it looks cheap.

__slamallama__ 2025-07-23 11:47

Dude they're available with 0 down 0 percent for 60 months. They are not expensive vehicles.

SonofaBridge 2025-07-23 11:48

Model Ys aren’t even that expensive by today’s average car prices. It’s average

__slamallama__ 2025-07-23 11:49

They are a trillion dollar company. On the supercharger network alone they are at absolute best a $10B company. There's no good way for them to *only* lose 99% of their value. Too much vertical integration. They will collapse under their own weight long before that.

ComfortableJacket429 2025-07-23 11:49

He hired them all back. Probably wasted 6 months and tens of millions of dollars too

ComfortableJacket429 2025-07-23 11:54

That’s not accurate. The company was founded in July 2003. Musk joined to lead their first funding round in Feb 2004. That’s soon enough to negotiate a founder title. But he’s a piece of shit for pushing the original team out.

Frequent_Dog_9569 2025-07-23 11:55

The new model Y looks cheap, bland, and clumsy from the front end. Honestly, every time I see one I do an internal, "ew"

ForagedFoodie 2025-07-23 11:56

The redesign appears to be a play for the Chinese market and young, male Americans (and possibly young, male Japanese). The look shares some similarities with vehicles from Xpeng or Maxus, but primairily influenced by anime meets nihilistic retrofuturism. There's a lot of problems with this strategy. First, exterior aesthetics weren't the reason Tesla was losing maketshare in China, so an exterior overhaul wasn't going to help there. Second, the previous design had a rather broad appeal--a feminine one, as you said. I would challenge the idea that it was a wife car, and say that the design had an appeal to a broader scope of women. American women are a fairly large market, but not one that Elon deems "cool". He has always wanted to be the king of the young, male, American, techno-bro crowd. This redesign pulls elements from media that is popular with that group in a bid for their attention. While creating a vehicle for a niche audience can make money, taking a vehicle that is supposed to have broad, mass-market appeal and redesigning it for a niche audience is stupidity. Finally, of course, no one who wants to distance themselves from Trump-bro Elon would buy after the redesign, since it becomes obvious that you bought it after he showed his true colors.

Kqtawes 2025-07-23 11:57

Yeah perhaps pissing off the largest demographic buying EVs might have been a dumb choice.

HereWeGo5566 2025-07-23 11:59

And also they shouldn’t have alienated their entire customer base

Sregtur 2025-07-23 12:00

Oddly enough I actually like the look of the refresh better, especially when seeing them in person versus photos. If the company was ran by someone normal and not affiliated with a Nazi and a pedophile, I would have been a model Y owner no doubt. Instead I went with an ICE car when purchasing new this year and will wait to switch to electric in the next 10 years when hopefully other competitors have better offerings similar to Tesla, but without the horrible quality issues and association.

gmwdim 2025-07-23 12:00

Consumers rejected the Cybertruck? Let’s double down and Cybertruckify every model, that’ll show ‘em! It's a bold strategy, Cotton. Let's see if it pays off for 'em.

praguer56 2025-07-23 12:01

The service center near me has no new Model Ys on the lot. There's one parked at the charger station but I think that's their demo and I've seen maybe two on the roads around Atlanta.

crappydeli 2025-07-23 12:01

They managed to make a strange looking car somewhat more unattractive, something that sucking up to fascists could not overcome. The stock will go up anyway.

WatchingyouNyouNyou 2025-07-23 12:02

It lacks soul like elongated dude

gmwdim 2025-07-23 12:03

Hey man the Cybertruck looks like it’s stuck in 1917.

Cuntonesian 2025-07-23 12:16

I guess a bigger problem is they haven’t released a gen 2 of any vehicle ever, despite being well over a decade old.

AbjectFray 2025-07-23 12:17

I guess I am in the minority. From a looks standpoint, I quite like it. The problem is and continues to be the man at the top of the company. He's the one causing this sales slump, not the form factor of the Y.

FrogmanKouki 2025-07-23 12:17

Got them with that no /s Congratulations Civic, nicely done

FrogmanKouki 2025-07-23 12:18

Civic is a long time poster to this sub, check his comment history if you doubt

FrogmanKouki 2025-07-23 12:19

Actually you've been had by the no /s

cleric3648 2025-07-23 12:20

At least the Nazi’s looked good. They wouldn’t be caught dead in a cheaply made red ball cap.

Danny414 2025-07-23 12:21

I actually super dislike the company now but im about to buy a y and i like it a lot.. test drove it yesterday. Tesla still gives you more for your money then the other evs do

Stellar_Impulse 2025-07-23 12:21

Remember when people were like "sales are low cause people are waiting for the Y refresh"?

fluxxis 2025-07-23 12:22

Owning the old model, the design of the new one wouldn't hold me back. Maybe I would miss the gear shifter, but my biggest gripe is actually the current state of Autopilot if you don't want or simply can't get FSD. It's way behind the competition.

SilverSky4 2025-07-23 12:25

I can easily afford one but I don’t want to be associated with the cult or the CEO

Dry-Pea1733 2025-07-23 12:25

I still own my 2018 Model 3 (because I’m too cheap to get rid of a working car, despite my dislike of Musk) and it looks as good as any of the newer models when you clean it up. Why would I want to upgrade?

Marco_Memes 2025-07-23 12:28

I ment in North America, im not denying that they’re beaten in Europe. Other networks in the US like Ionna are doing very well and could overtake them but for the time being there really is no competition—i have a (non Tesla) EV in the northeast US and while there’s a lot of good options; like the Rivian network and Electrify America to an extent, Tesla is by far the most reliable fast charging network. I avoid them whenever I can but they generally have way more stalls per location, their stalls put out more power, they’re more reliable, etc. There’s currently only 1 station in my area that supports my car but the one time I’ve used it, it was easily one of the best I’ve ever used purely because they actually put effort into maintaining sites which is something I unfortunately can’t say about a lot of other networks. Obviously they’re not sustaining their current market cap with this alone but it’s not something that could just close up easily. 27,000 chargers don’t just disappear, and simply selling that many to another company would be pretty difficult given it would instantly more than double the size of any new owners network and require a huge amount of work to integrate with a competitor. As it stands they don’t roam with a single other network, its not like Flo and ChargePoint for example where it would be relatively straightforward to combine them given their existing interoperability agreements

SilverSky4 2025-07-23 12:28

The Polestar 4 in comparison is a beautiful car

kevin_from_illinois 2025-07-23 12:31

They've been very good at selling the idea of a mid-cycle refresh as a new car. It isn't, but the idea of using these stupid codenames for the refreshes seems to have been effective in convincing people that the upgrade is significant.

Irishspringtime 2025-07-23 12:32

THIS! It's not about the exterior to me but the goddamn powertrain that's basically the same as the 2021 version. FFS, other EVs are doing a much better job improving charging times and range but Elmo it's more about his Robotaxi shit project.

PM_ME_MASTECTOMY 2025-07-23 12:32

True story

Irishspringtime 2025-07-23 12:34

China got two new colors. Yeah, that's their largest market but FFS the US is their home market. Why make the US wait for new colors and new options? We're being treated like the stepchild.

[deleted] 2025-07-23 12:35

Uglier than its predecessor. Does it readily burst into flames as well? No matter, now that the cult is regressing the energy policy back fifty years there’s no real point in buying an EV that has no reliable infrastructure to support recharging it. Another good idea mismanaged and destroyed by incompetent billionaires.

Metsican 2025-07-23 12:36

Completely subjective. Most people think it looks awful.

NeighborhoodFull1948 2025-07-23 12:37

A gen 2 would mean they need to redesign and retool. That‘s expensive you know.….

Irishspringtime 2025-07-23 12:39

What can they do, though? For aerodynamics, etc, it has to have some kind of jelly bean look - unless, of course, they improve their battery to increase range and charging speeds. After five years you'd think they would have accomplished that by now. Other manufacturers certainly have. The new Escalade EV gets over 500 miles, FFS. You can't tell me that Tesla can't get the Model Y to 400 miles by now. EDIT: Oh wait! The less range you have, the more times you have to stop and pay for Tesla charging.

NeighborhoodFull1948 2025-07-23 12:40

A part of your comparison actually prophetic. The Model T was produced for 19 years without a redesign.

NeighborhoodFull1948 2025-07-23 12:44

Never underestimate the power of a meme stock…. 43% of Tesla shareholders are retail investors, more than double the next, large cap company. It’s these blinkered retail investors who have pushed the stock price up, and are keeping it there.

That’s why they all met at the Tesla diner, so they can drown their sorrows sucking back $18 Elon hotdogs

BirdsAreFake00 2025-07-23 12:54

I thought the same way until I realized in an emergency, it can be very difficult to open Tesla doors from INSIDE the fucking car. These things are shit box death traps that are also built by a Nazi.

transsolar 2025-07-23 12:55

Is Robocop friends with Bladerunner?

Justasillyliltoaster 2025-07-23 12:58

I really like the older body style in spite of everything The new one is fugly

VirginiaLuthier 2025-07-23 12:58

Does Elon even know that millions of people hope all his businesses fail?

Individual-Nebula927 2025-07-23 13:00

To be fair, that's the definition for most of the industry. The difference of course is every other automaker does it every 2 years rather than 6-10 years like Tesla does for their vehicles.

Individual-Nebula927 2025-07-23 13:01

But necessary. Looks at what GM is doing with their Bolt, first released in 2016 for the 2017 model year.

Individual-Nebula927 2025-07-23 13:03

And it's what led to GM overtaking Ford in marketshare, that Ford never recovered from. Also, the funniest thing about that "any color you like as long as it's black" famous quote is that Ford didn't offer the Model T in black at the time.

csukoh78 2025-07-23 13:04

Welp. Nailed it.

csukoh78 2025-07-23 13:05

New one looks WAY worse. My wife's white 2021 with tint and performance package is sexy. This looks boring, and that's the death knell for a new car.

csukoh78 2025-07-23 13:06

I understood that reference.

Individual-Nebula927 2025-07-23 13:07

If anything, the Supercharger network will either be spun off prior to bankruptcy, or be bought during bankruptcy by one of the other major networks. Tesla itself will cease to exist.

CivicSyrup 2025-07-23 13:08

it's easy, I just look at all you liberal snowflakes crying about losing your food stamps. anyhoo, I'm off to grab some cyberbreakfasts at the new Tesla Diner. soo long losers

Who cares how it looks? Elon revealing his true colors has absolutely ruined Tesla. Edit: spelling

My fiancée is picking hers up next weekend!! 👀🤔🤷🏽‍♂️

Cuntonesian 2025-07-23 13:17

Yes, also fixing all the inevitable issues again with panel gaps, door handles, seals, leaking lights etc. They never seem to get it right on the first attempt.

etaoin314 2025-07-23 13:19

I’m pretty sure that the chargers are a liability and cost more to maintain than they make. They were a loss leader to sell cars.

etaoin314 2025-07-23 13:21

The 3 highland just got a refresh last year.

Lmao bro calm down, you ain’t buying a Ferrari. This car is a dime a dozen; they approve loans left and right for it.

reeefur 2025-07-23 13:24

I mean, it looks like a nicer, blown up Prius Prime....no thanks.

gmwdim 2025-07-23 13:26

It’s almost like Elon isn’t some kind of brilliant strategist.

FrogmanKouki 2025-07-23 13:39

I'm conflicted, I don't know if I should vote you up or down. But fantastic work on the new folks here

kadinani 2025-07-23 13:45

U mean like Volkswagen. ?.

__slamallama__ 2025-07-23 13:57

Yes 100%. There are a few companies that would salivate at the opportunity to buy the entire supercharger network at pennies on the dollar. Except that you'd also need to buy all the IP and factories for spare parts, which makes it a way less attractive proposition. It will certainly be a fascinating aspect of the inevitable chapter 11

Hugo Boss would have designed a red Nazi hat that would be iconic.

Fuskeduske 2025-07-23 14:13

Idk the facelifted model 3, is fine… They fixed my biggest issues with the old one, then they added some new, but it’s not as bad as before. Went from maybe 50/50 to 75/25

Creepy_Wash338 2025-07-23 14:19

People don't like the brand.

luigi38 2025-07-23 14:24

Somewhat? No need to sugar coat it, it’s awfully plain and too linear. It should have looked more like the Model 3 refresh and it would’ve been exponentially better.

Main-Professor-6574 2025-07-23 14:25

Cybertruck and the Juniper both get the finger when I see them.

doalwa 2025-07-23 14:25

I’ll replace my current Model 3 with a Polestar 4 in September…Ngl, I like the Model Y refresh but after 4 years I’m just ready for something different…going from the old 3 to even the new Y feels like driving the same car for another four years…

SuperF91EX 2025-07-23 14:25

No. Elon has fucked the brand. Period.

wilit 2025-07-23 14:28

I mean, BMW did it with the ugly oversized grills. When critics said it was ugly, BMW responded with, you're ugly, we're keeping it.

SuperF91EX 2025-07-23 14:28

We have a hammer in our side door pocket, in case the emergency release doesn’t work. Build quality is shit.

PerformanceDouble924 2025-07-23 14:32

It's not the refresh that bombed, it's that Elon is toxic and everything touches is toxic by extension. Who wants to fund that clown?

za72 2025-07-23 14:38

BMWs look like shit

CivicSyrup 2025-07-23 14:39

CivicSyrup 2025-07-23 14:41

embracing the down votes, we shall! it's good to see that few things change.

Fuskeduske 2025-07-23 14:42

And it never got better

Unable_Editor_1088 2025-07-23 14:47

They are changing that with the Neue Klasse design language

aft3rthought 2025-07-23 14:47

And then the designer left for Rolls Royce IIRC

RedBeezy 2025-07-23 14:49

It’s not the refresh, it’s the company and who the brand is associated with. I have 2 Teslas and was an early investor at $14. I would NEVER buy another Tesla at this point.

originalrocket 2025-07-23 14:54

Is Musk still head of Tesla? Then nah.

JLMaverick 2025-07-23 15:09

The Aztek was kind of an actual functional beater though..

HandRubbedWood 2025-07-23 15:09

It looks cheap, like if a lower level car maker tried to make a futuristic car but based on what we thought futuristic looked like in the 80’s.

R1tonka 2025-07-23 15:10

It’s what happens when engineers take over the design department.

MindStalker 2025-07-23 15:13

Its easy to open the door from the front. Someone in the rear can usually crawl into the front in order to get out. You can also install a string into the emergency release to let someone out otherwise. Most cars allow parental locks that don't allow someone in the rear to get out without assistance, so it's not that abnormal.

stupid_cat_face 2025-07-23 15:17

Well maybe someone who shant be named did some fucking around and now he's finding out.

Individual-Nebula927 2025-07-23 15:19

There's not much IP. The new NACS-compatible chargers use the CCS protocols everybody else already uses and have licenses for. The chargers themselves are designed and owned by Tesla, so any IP associated with those would come with the sale. After that, any contract manufacturer can make replacement parts. No need to get the factories and everything too.

MittenstheGlove 2025-07-23 15:23

That somehow looks even worse. And people hated on the Lexus Spindle Grill.

TunakTun633 2025-07-23 15:25

These justifications are *delusional.*

Secret-Revolution172 2025-07-23 15:26

The illusion of fake luxury when everyone and their mamas have one. Tesler drivers think they drive an Sclass AMG

TunakTun633 2025-07-23 15:26

In fairness, the powertrain was pretty damn competitive in the US. The ride comfort, on the other hand, was pretty shocking. I think they changed what was most important for them to change.

beaded_lion59 2025-07-23 15:27

I criticize the front-end design & placement of the headlights. Tesla obviously wanted to copy the CT (why???) with the light band across the front. The actual headlights are tiny & placed too low, again just like the CT. The MY headlights are going to be blocked by snow in winter and rendered useless.

AbleDanger12 2025-07-23 15:28

Bland style. Always has been. But even bland gets boring.

beaded_lion59 2025-07-23 15:29

I have been seeing these in the metro Seattle area, so their sales haven’t totally bombed.

Inevitable0117 2025-07-23 15:33

I think y’all are tripping and being disingenuous regarding the design. It looks fine.

Puzzleheaded_Bee4361 2025-07-23 15:56

We decided against buying a Tesla for the same reason. Test-drove one for a weekend though, to see what it was like compared to other EVs. Bought a 2025 Hyundai Kona Electric and are very happy with it. Much better build quality.

FootballPizzaMan 2025-07-23 15:56

Concerning

fluch23 2025-07-23 15:57

How can I even read that article...

__slamallama__ 2025-07-23 15:58

Nah there's a fair amount of IP. Tesla never released the patents on the supercharger connector cooling system, and their DC/DC power sharing concept is relatively novel. It's not actually industry leading but it's not something everyone is doing.

Decent_Candidate3083 2025-07-23 15:59

What refresh? looks the same to me. Worse is giving Elon money... I have many Tesla products, never again.

Beezelbubba 2025-07-23 16:02

My EV cost more than your shitty Y did, its much nicer all around and I dont look like a loser driving around in a swasticar

Turbulent-Phone-8493 2025-07-23 16:06

[deleted] 2025-07-23 16:07

Why would I willingly set my money on fire?

morbiiq 2025-07-23 16:10

I actually like it personally. But at the same time I’m glad I only see them rarely - even living in the Bay Area.

schtickshift 2025-07-23 16:17

My guess is that the situation is that for most of its life Tesla has had a monopoly or close to a monopoly in the markets it entered. Now it is facing the full competitive attention of the world’s motor industry who are all well and truly seeing the writing on the wall. Unlike Tesla these companies are accustomed to intense and constant competition with each other.

vietomatic 2025-07-23 16:26

They doubled down on Cyberturd and made the Y refresh use leftover parts for the front lightbar and the garbage truck flat rear.  They also tripled down using the Cyberturd font for the failed robotaxis.

HereWeGo5566 2025-07-23 16:40

Haha Sure. I know you’re being sarcastic. Many red states don’t even have any dealerships to buy them or EV infrastructure to charge them. So if you live in, say, Montana, you need to drive hours and hours to test drive a Tesla, and to have it repaired. And to be honest, I’m not sure the republicans even like Musk either, because he’s brawling with Trump.

halfty1 2025-07-23 16:42

I don’t mind the front all that much (I actually like the front running light design of the Cybertruck, the rest is trash) but I find the rear is terrible…mostly because of the relocation of the plate from the hatch to the bumper. Together with the straight instead of curved rear glass corners it makes the back look very slab sided. The license plate on the hatch below the lights (like pre refresh) is really needed to break that up.

MuckBulligan 2025-07-23 16:44

GoGoGadget88 2025-07-23 17:45

Yes! Exactly. The car is fine. The sales slump is due to Elon’s actions. Only way to fix it is to get a new CEO.

GoGoGadget88 2025-07-23 17:46

Yep, hit it on the head

ATX_Penya 2025-07-23 17:51

I bought a '22 MY and have over 60k miles. I screwed myself on the price since there was so much demand for Tesla's at the time. I actually waited 9 months for it. My wife mentioned that we could get a '25 MY for about what we are paying now. Yeah, I lost quite a bit of money but I absolutely refuse to give this organization a single cent more. I really like my car but the interior is pretty lacking. The one saving grace is the actual software, which is still superior to anything or there

[deleted] 2025-07-23 18:09

Few_Commission9828 2025-07-23 18:16

I own 2 electric cars. A volvo and a rivian. Cost wasnt the reason i bought them. Build quality and not being owned by a nazi coward really factored into my choice!

Alextryingforgrate 2025-07-23 18:23

I'm pretty sure it has more to do with the name than the design. It looks way better and is way better built.

Magnus_The_Totem_Cat 2025-07-23 19:18

No, it’s what happens when management forces design to follow the whims of their market research and bean counters demand the use of off the shelf parts further constraining design. If you look at the concept art it was actually bad ass.

torokunai 2025-07-23 19:32

I got a clearance MY the last week of 2023. $5000 off. I don't know if I have any issues with "panel gaps" since I haven't bothered to look. No warranty repairs yet, and the very serious ghost braking thing I saw in rental Model 3s in 2022-23 is now gone on the same roads in my MY. As for features I'm not using, I'm really not aware of any?? Well FSD, but I did pay $100 to use it when driving up to WA last month, and it was very worth it.

Opcn 2025-07-23 19:32

Good or bad it's hard to fucking succeed swimming upstream against Elon's shitty behavior.

torokunai 2025-07-23 19:34

I've owned my 2023 for 2.5 years now and it has ~75% of what I paid OTD ($40K). But I'm not trading it in so that's neither here nor there.

s1m0n8 2025-07-23 19:42

Model Y wasn't a big enough update. I'd never want one, but I have no problem with the Cybertruck - it's weird but tried some new things which is good to see. It would be fine as a prototype vehicle, and it's nowhere near what was promised and simply isn't capable enough for traditional truck owners.

fnblackbeard 2025-07-23 19:47

According to Reddit Tesla is going out of business every week.

nlaak 2025-07-23 19:55

> Nobody thinks it's better, objectively. Really? You've polled the entire world? I'd say objectively, that Ford is unlikely to have terrible panel gaps, shitty paint, or parts completely unavailable for weeks or months.

ExcitingMeet2443 2025-07-23 19:56

I've seen a total of TWO here in Aotearoa New Zealand, and I had to look twice to be sure they weren't just another Chinese designed SUV that I wasn't aware of. They took the Model 3s unique design (inspired by a bar of soap), made it even uglier as an SUV, then made it look generic.

meshreplacer 2025-07-23 19:57

That's because they are catering to the Asian market so they are designing for that which means ugly obnoxious looking cars.

HappyAmbition706 2025-07-23 20:03

Budded 2025-07-23 20:21

I was sitting in traffic the other day wondering if those lightbars are being mass produced somewhere, as Hyundai and others use them too. I wonder if they're more efficient in overall lighting, low wattage, and easier than 2 lights. Random traffic ruminations...

Budded 2025-07-23 20:23

I honestly wish that were true, meaning that many more ICE cars (and dirty exhaust and dripping fluids) off the roads.

Metsican 2025-07-23 20:23

The Mach-E is known for high voltage battery and contactor failures. That's a whole lot more important than panel gaps. It also suffers from lack of parts availability. There's plenty to legitimately shit on Tesla for, but it's properly stupid to pretend like Fords are perfect.

Magnus_The_Totem_Cat 2025-07-23 20:27

GM management is the reason the Aztek came out like it did, not design and not engineering. No amount of pedantic nonsense will change that.

Xerxero 2025-07-23 20:32

Remove the Tesla logo and it could be any of the Chinese brands. Zero style or soul

Xaero_Hour 2025-07-23 20:45

You don't buy Teslas from dealerships; you buy from Tesla directly and they ship it to you. The things you see are test drive lots, maintenance dispatchers, and/or showrooms. And there are gaps, but the supercharger network does give you coast-to-coast coverage, not to mention charging at home. I got curious and Montana actually has decent coverage minus the northeastern portion, which I assume is down to population density. And you don't drive to them to get repairs; they drive to you. They save a ton of money not having to have garages and just having a fleet of mobile repair vehicles. That is unless of course it's serious structural damage to the car; then you're back to the hours long tow. The main things stopping red state residents from owning them are the environmentally friendly image, the costs, charge anxiety (even if it's mostly unwarranted), and a fundamental misunderstanding of the engineering involved with EVs and maintenance. These are people that thought Biden was singling out Musk for a conference on emissions standards after all. I can promise they don't like Musk, not just because he's having a fake half-fight with the admin, but because he's an immigrant (when you get right down to it, it doesn't matter how white-passing of an immigrant he is), he has the personality of a wet fart, and while he's just as stupid as they are, he can't check his ego long enough to hide it even from them.

With the old one, you could pretend like you didn’t know about the CEO’s affinity for Nazi salutes. With the new one, you can’t.

RioRancher 2025-07-23 22:32

Except now you can tell which Ys are “vintage” and which are openly endorsing Musk. I probably won’t replace mine with another Tesla, just because of Musk.

ShallowBlueWater 2025-07-23 22:54

Polestar software is a disaster so it’s not a good ev option either. Seems like a lot of ice car companies are having a very hard time with the software side.

bazilbt 2025-07-23 22:54

Stock up ten percent though right?

SEND_ME_UR_CARS 2025-07-23 23:30

still a gen 1 car with nothing notably new, like every other Tesla

y4udothistome 2025-07-23 23:46

Wouldn’t have it any other way

Fragrant-Ad-5517 2025-07-24 00:19

The Juniper hasn’t bombed because of the styling. It’s because of Tesla’s CEO who had immersed himself in extremism.

ftwin 2025-07-24 00:45

Should have taken its design inspiration from the refreshed M3 instead of the trash can on wheels. It was only the best selling EV in the world…prob best not to fuck with it too much.

No_Discipline_7380 2025-07-24 01:31

That's yesterday's hype, the new hype is the L version of the model Y which will somehow take the Chinese market by storm and not only make up for the lost market share but expand it...

No_Discipline_7380 2025-07-24 01:34

Most of them in the wrong places

LaserToy 2025-07-24 01:49

Wait, what could’ve happened? /s

Professor-Schneebly 2025-07-24 02:03

Why did they put a picture of a Prius on the post?

Metsican 2025-07-24 02:12

Even Jim Farley would completely disagree with that.

Maximum-Objective-39 2025-07-24 02:39

The Aztek was also ugly in an endearing way. Like some sort of mutant pug.

Maximum-Objective-39 2025-07-24 02:41

Concept art also makes almost everything look badass. That's half of its job.

trackintreasure 2025-07-24 03:01

Unfortunately I've seen plenty here in Australia surprisingly.

zitrored 2025-07-24 03:57

Make four turns and you are back to start. This is teslas story. Keep moving the company and investors in circles telling the next big lie.

Mountain-Crab3438 2025-07-24 04:09

FSD has made it around so many corners that it has been going in circles for the past 10 years.

SaltyPlantain1503 2025-07-24 04:23

Say goood Night, TeSSla. Goodnight, TeSSla.

ThottyThanos 2025-07-24 04:33

Should show your put positions

Radiant-Painting581 2025-07-24 05:09

Poe’s Law strikes again.

Ok_Sandwich8466 2025-07-24 05:34

You spelled “shit” wrong.

jayplus707 2025-07-24 06:14

Somewhat? That back looks terrible and reminds me of a Prius. No offense to Prius owners…..

Sanx69 2025-07-24 07:11

The new Y isn't exactly pretty, but it **is** an improvement on the old version. Not exactly a high bar, admittedly...

a4xrbj1 2025-07-24 07:54

Osbourne effect incoming. Who in his sane mind will not only buy a Tesla from a fascist (and hasn't done so already) but will pay over $10k more instead of waiting will October to buy a "more affordable" Model Y?

justsomerandomnamekk 2025-07-24 09:52

Tesla's are the cheapest option for EVs where I live. Yet noone buys them cuz they are technologically outdated and everyone hates Elmo.

justsomerandomnamekk 2025-07-24 10:01

And I think Teslas look like Asphalt bubbles and I can't discern the difference between Model S, 3, X, Y. They all look equally soulless.

mellofello808 2025-07-24 11:13

The interior of the new one is much nicer, but I much prefer the old styling of the exterior. If they just gave it the updated model 3 headlights it would be much sexier IMHO.

SeaPlantain9628 2025-07-24 11:49

No different than an apple iPhone for the last 10 years but people still buy them in droves

AbiesAccomplished491 2025-07-24 11:53

The car looks like a beautified frog.

Master_Grape5931 2025-07-24 12:02

He said half the population by the end of the year last night. 😂

BilboBodigity 2025-07-24 12:28

You non-Tesla guys keep confusing "next year" as a point in time! What? No! Your use of language is inadequate. Musk's brain works out of time and logic. If it was suddenly "next year" and true FSD and Robotaxis were actually available true Tesla dudes would have nothing to look forward to! FSD is the beauty of a dream you never wake up from! Do you hate dreaming? It's not a Model Y, it's Model WHY!

demon_of_elru1 2025-07-24 12:34

Just stop.

that_dutch_dude 2025-07-24 15:07

the fiat multipla wants a word.

that_dutch_dude 2025-07-24 15:09

the tesla powertrain is still unbeaten by other carmakers.

Budded 2025-07-24 15:36

And the drooling Teslur cultists cheered, believing him 100%

Ok_Woodpecker17897 2025-07-24 15:55

A zillion robotaxi’s just around the corner.

Extension_Ant_7369 2025-07-24 18:25

I haven’t had the opportunity to test drive a new MY so I cannot compare, but… I don’t understand how the previous MY became the world’s best selling vehicle. It was horribly cheap and the ride was awful. I owned a 2020 MX and compared to it the ride was bone jarring harsh, a lot of road noise in the cabin, and the single display and plastic interior just felt cheap.

opsers 2025-07-24 20:07

No joke. The Lucid Gravity charges better on Superchargers than any Tesla and the powertrain is way more impressive.

ascaria 2025-07-24 22:41

Elon good. Elon trendy. Elon saves world. Elon cars good. That was basically the sentiment of a lot of pretty fucking stupid people for a few years.

TheBlackUnicorn 2025-07-24 22:58

The difference is that BMW didn't decide to redesign their most successful car to look like their least successful car.

Academic-Business-45 2025-07-24 23:28

No, the owner that is a Nazi has bombed

Gamtoronto 2025-07-25 01:05

Are we really comparing a 80-100k car to a 50-60k one ?

Extension_Ant_7369 2025-07-25 01:09

Yes we are.

Gamtoronto 2025-07-25 01:18

Exactly. the Y is cheaper — cheaper seats, cheaper sound system, cheaper suspension. That’s why it’s $30K less. It’s not rocket science is it

Extension_Ant_7369 2025-07-25 01:49

Our Cadillac Lyriq is closer in price to a MY than an MX and in terms of build quality, materials, and ride quality, it is light years beyond even the MX. So “cheap” does not have to equal “cheap”.

jetx117 2025-07-25 03:46

Tesla can no longer rely on the cool and special factor anymore . EVs are normal now and Tesla hasn’t done a full redesign of any of there models. The model S just gets a new coat of paint but it’s still the same platform as it was in 2012. They just try and penny pinch instead of improving the product with meaningful changes that aren’t intended for short term content “wow” gimmicks

Chemical-Idea-1294 2025-07-25 09:47

No. Just use the door handle. Just pull a little bit stronger.

Head_Bet_2138 2025-07-25 11:09

Im holding off for the performance :-)

Chance_Airline_4861 2025-07-26 16:28

The back reminds me a bit of robocop

nemtna 2025-07-26 17:13

it hit the curb

schavawn 2025-07-26 22:05

Yes, because musk is a monster who doesn't deserve his wealth. He can take his cars and shove them where the sun don't shine (Mars maybe)

rebbi1 2025-07-26 23:49

😅😅

Stewth 2025-07-27 06:00

"lidar? We don't need no steenking lidar" (They absolutely needed lidar)

Irishspringtime 2025-07-27 18:13

True but that's all reflected In the price, right? If Tesla built a vehicle like Gravity or Air maybe they'd be back in business but until then... They're stuck in 2022 as far as I'm concerned.

opsers 2025-07-27 20:00

To some extent, yes, but car is on a whole other level in terms of quality. The Air's powertrain was also better than Tesla's in 2022 powertrain. They're basically IBM in the 2000s now. They got way too comfortable and didn't innovate, and now they're no longer the leader. Hey though, the Model Y now comes with Grok?

[deleted] 2025-07-28 00:06

They did naci that coming.

dhskiskdferh 2025-07-28 13:23

Hello nope sold it :-)

Irishspringtime 2025-07-28 15:41

Yeah. This is such bullshit. The rubes are creaming themselves because Grok is now available on new cars so wow!!

DonkeyFuel 2025-07-29 16:54

That's a real shame. Thoughts and prayers. Almost like, other automakers are smart for just ... you know.... selling cars and keeping out of the rest of stuff. The Elon effect cuts both ways.

DonkeyFuel 2025-07-29 16:56

Ask that cult member the new reason....

69420trashpanda69420 2025-07-30 04:40

The amount of these I see on the road in Phoenix strongly disagree

SentinelZero 2025-11-16 00:16

"Lets not change the ugly badly proportioned blob shape that the old Y had and instead stick with that. What could go wrong?"

SentinelZero 2025-11-16 00:17

Anyone who buys one of these is a Nazi supporter, makes them easy to spot for sure.
