Tesla CEO Elon Musk is eyeing San Francisco for his next robotaxi city — to which I say, good luck to you, sir. Musk acknowledged that the company is still waiting on “regulatory approval,” which hints at the uphill company Tesla will face in pushing this process forward. (Get it? Uphill? San Francisco?) The company scored a big win earlier this year when the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) granted Tesla’s application for a ride-hail permit, a required first step in the automaker’s quest to launch a robotaxi service in the state. But the permit does not authorize Tesla to offer rides to the general public or operate a full-fledged ride-hailing service. To operate a commercial robotaxi service in California, any company would need to obtain three permits from the California DMV: testing with a safety driver, fully driverless testing, and deployment of autonomous vehicles. Right now, Tesla only has one of these permits: testing with a safety driver. What robotaxis? The ones that require a human supervisor in the passenger seat, and still crash?

muhgyver 2025-07-10 18:24

He hasn't even "brought them" to the majority of Austin. Maybe start there??? Such a fucking scam.

Select-Letterhead690 2025-07-10 18:31

Why expand if you still have a human in the seat next to you? This is just as expensive to operate as an Uber. Probably even more expensive since you have remote operators driving the car. What is the point of expanding?

methanized 2025-07-10 18:34

was there a crash?

Real-Technician831 2025-07-10 18:49

The robotaxis which have xAi Grok integrated in them.

Real-Technician831 2025-07-10 18:49

Stock pump

Engunnear 2025-07-10 19:00

>The company has only one of three DMV permits required for robotaxis. And it may struggle to answer some questions about safety. Oh my, no - they won't struggle to answer anything. They'll just lie.

Automatic_Soil9814 2025-07-10 19:05

As somebody who lived in San Francisco for a number of years, it’s not an easy city to drive in. It’s like those driving video games where the easy levels are flat grid like cities. San Francisco should be one of the last places, not the first.

LightMission4937 2025-07-10 19:10

Yea right. It's trash even with a dip shit in the front seat.

Particular-Bike-9275 2025-07-10 19:14

I’m curious about this too. Also wondering how many rides they’ve actually done so far.

BrtFrkwr 2025-07-10 19:17

Yes, they were such a raving success in Austin.

LVegasGuy 2025-07-10 19:19

Expect 10 Robotaxis in a 10 square mile area.

sunsetman120 2025-07-10 19:36

Elmobiles.

Appropriate_Creme720 2025-07-10 19:40

It sure would be a shame if no insurance company would take on the risk because they all kept being lit on fire.

Lorax91 2025-07-10 19:55

>The robotaxis which have xAi Grok integrated in them. On brand... https://www.yahoo.com/news/elon-musks-ai-just-called-172650371.html

P0Rt1ng4Duty 2025-07-10 20:13

Since he has to keep a driver in the car he should hire homeless people and call it a hobotaxi.

beatnik_squaresville 2025-07-10 20:28

Is the plan a massive tax write off when the excess stock of Teslas get turned into burning husks littering the sides of roads?

Real-Technician831 2025-07-10 20:37

Of course it is. They will be the first goose stepping cars ever. They also have special jew hunt mode.

CouncilmanRickPrime 2025-07-10 20:51

Based on the videos coming out, not many. But there [was](https://insideevs.com/news/764905/tesla-robotaxi-first-crash-parked/) a minor crash.

same font as the cybertruck logo. imagine the lethality of a cybertruck taxi

Brokenandburnt 2025-07-10 21:30

Tesla self-insure tho.😄 But your point still stands.

HereWeGo5566 2025-07-10 21:30

I’m sure San Franciscans will be happy to support musk’s newest venture…..

jack0roses 2025-07-10 21:35

Come back when you reach Level 4 FSD, Mr. Musk.

Bobinss 2025-07-10 21:48

When I was 16, I learned to drive in the burbs and I thought I knew everything because it was a stick shift. Then my dad took me to SF to drive. It set my confidence back years.

mt8675309 2025-07-10 21:49

No one will ride in them…

blackicebaby 2025-07-10 21:50

Yeah, I'll just take an Uber.

Bobinss 2025-07-10 21:51

SF: How many LiDAR/ radar sensors will be on each vehicle? Musk: We don't use LiDAR/ radar because it's too expensive. SF: Next!

Automatic_Soil9814 2025-07-10 21:56

100%. I had the same experience. I’ve been driving for a few years and my parents got me my own car: a 2.5 L Chevy blazer with a four speed stick shift. It was not a very powerful car. I’m in the super steep part of San Francisco stopped at a stop sign facing uphill. A very nice Porsche pulls right up to my bumper. I knew that as soon as I let off the brake, the car would roll back and crushed that Porsche unless I timed it perfectly. I think I put 10,000 miles of wear on that clutch at that intersection. But I didn’t hit the Porsche, so that’s a win.

Individual-Praline20 2025-07-10 22:01

That’s why I’m so eager to see them in SF 🤣🍿🍿

Automatic_Soil9814 2025-07-10 22:11

Yes! The tough terrain PLUS the fact that so many people in San Francisco can’t stand Elon Musk means those vehicles are in for a hard time. The writers are absolutely going to decimate those vehicles. If there is anything value that can be pride off the interior or exterior relatively quickly, the locals are gonna strip that day one.

gumnamaadmi 2025-07-10 23:24

Excellent opportunity for battery/drive motor replacements!!!

nolongerbanned99 2025-07-10 23:57

Aren’t operators testing self driving in California required to report on disengagements and other issues. Tesla doesn’t right?

[deleted] 2025-07-11 00:24

Graywulff 2025-07-11 00:43

Uber licensed Waymo didn’t they? It’s a nvidia level 4 system if I recall, it being connected to any EV, would be a safety improvement. The users app and a better system is there, just being properly tested, before they start hiring less people. They lease out cars right now, I wonder how many of those are EV?

Graywulff 2025-07-11 00:47

They’ll probably need insurance with a state approved carrier as a cab/rideshare/livery service. I’d never let a company self insure on passengers or the cars if it’s a robotaxi or hired car of any kind.

Dewfall-Hawk 2025-07-11 00:57

He only wanted that headline.

origplaygreen 2025-07-11 01:10

Same in my city % wise most hate Musk here but that does not matter. Out of millions of people they can find their local stans. Invite only for their cringy influencers. They will get another 20 or so that need to push content to their channels and in turn Tesla they can say they expanded to another city to keep suckers believing they are still in the game. Keep the stock inflated as long as they can. There are plenty that shoot their YouTube videos gushing over how their mind is blown on their blah blah version of FSD in San Francisco. You don’t think they can find another 20 there?

pavlik_enemy 2025-07-11 01:23

California is by far the largest EV market in US with 1.2M registrations in 2023 (Texas is second with a mere 230K registrations) so alienating its population with political antics was a pretty bad move

Maximum-Objective-39 2025-07-11 03:04

Pretty sure it was one of the inspirations for the First Crazy Taxi

ArQ7777 2025-07-11 05:21

Elon Musk said if San Francisco approved Robotaxi, then Tesla will enter SF in 2 months. He knows the strict laws in CA will not approve Robotaxi so he kicks the ball to the CA authority. Doing so, he pump TSLA stock price without doing anything real.

ArQ7777 2025-07-11 05:23

Musk said Robotaxi will enter SF city if it is approved. He knows it won't be approved by CA strict safety laws.

Brokenandburnt 2025-07-11 05:34

Then they are utterly fucked. With both the bad optics of early issues in Austin, and the vandalism against Teslas I'm unsure how any other provider would accept them.

Automatic_Soil9814 2025-07-11 10:33

Clever girls.

Graywulff 2025-07-11 10:44

It’s hard to insure a regular Tesla never mind a Tesla owned Tesla. Then a crap self driving system.

MarchMurky8649 2025-07-11 11:00

Now consider that, either they have an employee in there, which means Tesla lose money on every car, or you now have Tesla owned Teslas **with nobody in them!** At the very least they'll be covered in graffiti as soon as they get stuck in traffic. The cameras on the cars can record any vandalism of course, but not much use if people cover their faces to do it.

Graywulff 2025-07-11 11:18

Oh yeah, borrow some parts, redesign the interior, exterior. Spray paint the cameras with a mask, headlights and tail lights too, windows as well. Spray paint the everything computer. Someone can write malware that just says everything is Nazi computer at tessler, and “enjoy your fiery death” on opening the doors.

chicodivertido 2025-07-11 11:58

He wants to do no such thing. He needs another grift to pump the stock because people are finally, slowly but surely waking up to his scams and fraud. The stock price IS Tesla.

nolongerbanned99 2025-07-11 14:12

Do you know or have a sense for what will be the reason they don’t allow it.

Ouch259 2025-07-11 14:19

We will reach level 9 in a few months

JDubsdenspur 2025-07-11 14:23

so they can crash into waymos 🤪

y4udothistome 2025-07-11 15:00

Do you ever notice when stuff starts to go bad he comes out with this new bullshit and people suck it up in the stock goes up I believe he’s doing it now so when the earnings come out on the 23rd it’ll of pumped and it’ll just come back down to where it was Just a thought

Brokenandburnt 2025-07-11 15:39

>everything is Nazi computer at tessler I'm stealing that ☝️  I'm still giggling like a schoolboy

Real-Technician831 2025-07-11 15:58

Every single time.

Etrigone 2025-07-11 16:22

I would walk before taking one of those.

Graywulff 2025-07-11 16:32

Sharing is caring!

ZgBlues 2025-07-11 20:27

Tesla is a meme stock company that occasionally also sells cars.

RCA2CE 2025-07-11 22:49

Aren’t they crashing like crazy in the small area they’re trying to operate in now

americansherlock201 2025-07-11 23:13

Tesla would be operating from a major disadvantage. Waymo is everywhere in and well known in San Francisco. It’s the known quantity. Tesla would have to prove they are a significantly better option to have a chance. Failure there dooms robotaxi

icy1007 2025-07-13 21:01

They’re expanding it once they don’t need a human in the car.

jroth74 2025-07-14 10:47

Best case scenario is the city lets him do it and they all get destroyed within the 1st week.
