Nothing to see here, this is the legacy Tesla Model Y 7-seater - not the new YL (extended version launched in China). What a downer and terrible move considering Americans are bigger families and also fatter in general.

AWildDragon 2026-01-13 02:57

No.

tru3no 2026-01-13 02:58

Can I retro fit this on my 2026 long range model Y ?

Confident-Sector2660 2026-01-13 02:58

They need to include the premium sound system in the RWD model 3. Ridiculous since now they have the standard variant

harda_toenail 2026-01-13 03:02

You couldn’t before. Doubt this is different. The back seats are on rails. 5 seater they are not. Plus penthouse is different on 5 seater due to the sliding seats on the 7 seater. With that said enjoy your car. The very back really is tiny. My 4 year old loves it but even he doesn’t have much leg room

Voidfang_Investments 2026-01-13 03:05

Huge changes - sucks for December buyers.

Mackesanz 2026-01-13 03:07

Good riddance for the gray headliner, I want a black one :(

Heidenreich12 2026-01-13 03:09

I’ve told the Tesla location by me when I come in for service, the day they bring the Model Y L is the day I get another Tesla. It seems like they hear it all the time. Seems dumb we haven’t gotten it yet.

eatmynasty 2026-01-13 03:11

The YL isn’t for families it’s for people who can afford a driver

Eric_Partman 2026-01-13 03:12

People who can afford a driver aren’t buying a model Y, which is the same car my uber driver can afford.

mhaggin 2026-01-13 03:13

Cmon now

yhsong1116 2026-01-13 03:14

50k usd ish suv?

AmbitiousFunction911 2026-01-13 03:15

That’s pure bullshit

justinj627 2026-01-13 03:21

Same… hoping for a retrofit

84brian 2026-01-13 03:21

I’m waiting for the Tesla mini van

-R107- 2026-01-13 03:24

7 seater is damn near useless unless you have smaaaall kids

katger18 2026-01-13 03:29

What a joke. 3rd seat barely had a space even my 3 yo with a carseat won't fit!

dextroz 2026-01-13 03:29

Ain't happening. Battery density vs. Weight sucks to make it viable.

djwurm 2026-01-13 03:30

this is not the Y L model that China has

Hoodamush 2026-01-13 03:32

Just was in shopping Teslas, their interiors look cheap like a budget Kia.

casino_r0yale 2026-01-13 03:33

“Legacy” meaning Juniper right?

Foodiehunter 2026-01-13 03:35

Yea big L for not releasing the L version to the country with in avg bigger passengers

Wildeface 2026-01-13 03:36

So can we retrofit the headliner. Honestly not interested in the screen as I’m afraid the higher res screen will impact performance eventually.

boyWHOcriedFSD 2026-01-13 03:37

Lmao

Pcuz 2026-01-13 03:37

But they raised lease pricing .. so I think the improvements don’t justify the extra $$$ unless you wanted the 7 seater. So not a big loss for December buyers IMHO

boyWHOcriedFSD 2026-01-13 03:38

![gif](giphy|kbQk0tzfL4ilfLXBf7|downsized)

Voidfang_Investments 2026-01-13 03:40

They will go down surely.

krazineurons 2026-01-13 03:41

Can confirm, I have a model x with 7 seats, barely fits young kids, crushes legs, also they hate it there as there's no window to look outside.

Buggabones1 2026-01-13 03:41

What about the Tesla semi?

Snoo93079 2026-01-13 03:43

Use your words, honey

Snoo93079 2026-01-13 03:43

Wut If they can afford a driver they sure as shit ain't getting a Y

Snoo93079 2026-01-13 03:44

How would you pay for that?

ResponsibleFan3414 2026-01-13 03:46

Yeah, that's what I want. a Tesla Minivan.

NoaLink 2026-01-13 03:51

Hard agree.

TMPRKO 2026-01-13 03:51

I can’t imagine trying to fit 7 people into the Y. It’s such a comfortable car but 7 just feels like cramming sardines.

clintbyrne 2026-01-13 03:54

The cyber van would be epic. Just drop on a top and add sliding doors.

Visvism 2026-01-13 03:56

Facts. Have had the 7 seater for 2 years now and used it once. My kids are now in elementary and those small seats seemed like an investment at the time, but once again proved I am terrible with making auto add-on choices lol.

Caysman2005 2026-01-13 03:57

You'd be surprised. Many people in Asian countries with cheap labour have chauffeurs for very ordinary cars. For instance, my uncle has a chauffeur for his Toyota in SouthEast Asia.

Hockeyshot39 2026-01-13 03:59

rather have the YL but nice they are adding the bigger screen and black headliner - small increments happening makes me happier im planning on buying in 2027 when my 120k motor/battery warranty will be up

SteveLangfordsCock 2026-01-13 03:59

They’re probably worried about a huge drop in model X sales if they release the Y L.

Hockeyshot39 2026-01-13 03:59

that wont happen lol

Hockeyshot39 2026-01-13 04:01

so many ppl asking this here. 100% doubt they will have a retro fit

Hockeyshot39 2026-01-13 04:01

weird thing to say lmao myself and MANY disagree

Lotan 2026-01-13 04:05

How big of a difference is the screen? A friend is getting a new Model Y on Wed. If it doesn’t have the black trim / new screen, should they hold?

ChewieWookie 2026-01-13 04:05

That sucks. I've been seriously researching a Tesla for our next vehicle but the 5 seater is a deal killer because it's not uncommon for us to have 5-6 people at a time. Yeah, it would work for the 5, but it's nice to be able to spread out a bit.

icy1007 2026-01-13 04:08

It’s not the legacy Model Y…

icy1007 2026-01-13 04:08

We already got that, it’s called the Model X.

icy1007 2026-01-13 04:09

L may come at the end of 2026.

icy1007 2026-01-13 04:10

Gray headliner still exists.

JaniceRossi_in_2R 2026-01-13 04:10

Ya, im kit putting my kids that close to the back

icy1007 2026-01-13 04:10

The standard sound system is plenty for RWD buyers. The Model Y Standard’s sound system is cutback from even the RWD system.

Eric_Partman 2026-01-13 04:11

Yeah I’m obviously talking about US

Outlandishness-Motor 2026-01-13 04:13

I have a 6 year old and i’d never put him back there because it looks like a death trap. Annoyed I bought that upgrade without really understanding that it was borderline unusable

SMOKE2JJ 2026-01-13 04:14

I think the spot where they would manufacture the Model YL in Texas is currently occupied by the line that makes 10 trucks a year.

dextroz 2026-01-13 04:15

No, the same bullshit on the original Model Y has been brought to Juniper as a 7 seater instead of bringing across the completely redesigned YL from China.

JaniceRossi_in_2R 2026-01-13 04:15

I’d argue that the disastrous hodgepodge of ten million knobs and buttons that most vehicles have is way cheaper looking

Hoodamush 2026-01-13 04:15

It’s not a weird thing to say, it’s what I think their interior looks like.

Hockeyshot39 2026-01-13 04:16

Tell him to swap orders

ojaber 2026-01-13 04:16

Man I was about to drop a down payment: I thought this was the Y L

dextroz 2026-01-13 04:16

Releasing this travesty tells me they're not bringing it at all to the US, at least not until HW5.

dextroz 2026-01-13 04:18

Hopefully 2028 will see a wider semi rollout but we also need the morons in the federal government to pack up.

jabroni4545 2026-01-13 04:20

Robovan as close as you'll get.

Malacasts 2026-01-13 04:27

The X?

84brian 2026-01-13 04:28

nah, X is just a little larger than a Y.

icy1007 2026-01-13 04:29

What travesty? It’s a minor option they’re giving to customers.

justinj627 2026-01-13 04:32

Shops already do regular vehicles and it’s been done on teslas before. It’s not crazy expensive to do.

vtrac 2026-01-13 04:35

This is what a Rivian is for.

ersatzcrab 2026-01-13 04:35

What? What's the implication here? There are a ton of electric vehicles larger than model y with 250+mi range. That's not even on the list of reasons why Tesla wouldn't build a minivan.

boyWHOcriedFSD 2026-01-13 04:38

I prefer acronyms, mom

dextroz 2026-01-13 04:38

They have a real option which they are forfeiting..

Quin1617 2026-01-13 04:39

Yeah, the only people here with chauffeurs are in Rolls Royces and Bentleys. There’s no way Tesla’s trying to target that market.

TAoie83 2026-01-13 04:44

For china, 7 inches is a lot

GO__NAVY 2026-01-13 04:46

Used 24/25 MX 6/7 seats may be?

HEAT-FS 2026-01-13 04:46

The 7 seater model X can fit, at most, a gallon of milk in the “trunk”

TAoie83 2026-01-13 04:47

With the slumping sales this would be great

ckangnz 2026-01-13 05:14

I saw a photo of a truck slammed behind model Y, and i would never ever have my child sit at the very back

TheLegendaryWizard 2026-01-13 05:25

The black headliner is so nice. Too bad it's not the Model YL

rawasubas 2026-01-13 05:29

But what if I read lmao like a word?

mac10190 2026-01-13 05:31

Yeah I saw that they added the larger screen but I wasn't sure if it was the QHD screen like the Performance has or a normal 16-in HD screen. The website doesn't seem to give any specifics. It just says 16-in display for the premium models and 16-in qhd for performance. Has anyone found anything confirming one way or the other?

CriticalBasedTheory 2026-01-13 05:33

Our X is cool but a minivan it is not.

happoman 2026-01-13 05:33

7 seater has reinforced rear. At least legacy model had.

Hoodamush 2026-01-13 05:38

Well ok!

smu1892 2026-01-13 05:45

Where is this Matte black exterior badging? I don’t see a chrome one on the new model y at all. How can you turn it black when it’s not there?

WorkingBake 2026-01-13 06:05

It is the same as the Performance. The QHD isn’t really noticeable though tbh. But always nice to have the newest version

WorkingBake 2026-01-13 06:05

Not a big difference at all

g1aiz 2026-01-13 06:27

Honestly I don't think there are many sales left on the X anyway.

icy1007 2026-01-13 06:51

This is a real option…

Caysman2005 2026-01-13 06:52

And the guy you're replying to is talking about China. He's saying the reason the US doesn't get the YL is because it's designed for the Chinese Market, in which people buy them to be chauffeured around in.

Robou_ 2026-01-13 06:54

Maybe not on the shop but you will absolutely be able to ask your local service to do it for you, they will simply order the parts and charge the regular working hours

icy1007 2026-01-13 06:56

Incorrect. It has plenty of space in the back even in the 7-seater.

icy1007 2026-01-13 06:57

It basically is with the falcon wing doors.

Himalayan_Hillbilly 2026-01-13 06:59

If you look on the Tesla site now, the headliners are black in every trim except Standard

jspirits2020 2026-01-13 07:50

Nope.

eatmynasty 2026-01-13 08:08

Thank you

Academic_Release5134 2026-01-13 08:19

I hate to break it to people, but Musk has moved on. His interest is robots and AI. The cars are boring to him. I expect and worry that Tesla, except for the FSD, will start to fall further.

Short-Service1248 2026-01-13 09:36

I have the 7 seater old gen and those seats are absolutely useless. Can barely use them in a pinch for a small child

HistoricalHurry8361 2026-01-13 10:30

They need to make something that competes with the gravity, until then I’m not buying

Yukycg 2026-01-13 11:04

In USA, I would get the YL if Tesla brings it here. In China, there are many choices beside the YL from price point, luxury features…etc. There is no competition in US in terms of value for money.

whadzinaname 2026-01-13 11:06

Test drove a new performance y recently. There was no noticeable difference in the screen.

boyWHOcriedFSD 2026-01-13 11:21

![gif](giphy|bPTXcJiIzzWz6)

Breezgoat 2026-01-13 11:27

It's coming end of the year I assume you know this?

Mackesanz 2026-01-13 12:30

Wouldn’t get my hopes up for this one, with the plastic / seatbelt components

Mackesanz 2026-01-13 12:30

Standard Model Y is cringe though

LionTigerWings 2026-01-13 12:34

I’m considering amputating both of my legs. Would this be option be a good fit for me?

[deleted] 2026-01-13 12:38

[deleted]

Bitter-Square-3963 2026-01-13 12:50

I hate that this exists. Now I can't convince my wife that MXP is the only option for 3rd row Tesla.  Welp, guess it's R1S quad for me.

xenner 2026-01-13 12:51

Except mini van doors are arguably better. I like my X but the doors are just an annoyance. (unless you're buckling a child in a carseat in the rain...)

xenner 2026-01-13 12:52

cubic wise? Yes. Useful? no. Can barely fit a single roller carryon suitcase. Need more than one? good luck.

xenner 2026-01-13 12:54

Hell even 6 in my X is tight, but doable. Hope no one needs to put something in the trunk either. 3rd row in a Y seems more like marketing than useful.

Ninj4s 2026-01-13 13:08

A 100% drop from 1 to 0?

Bureaucromancer 2026-01-13 13:15

But seriously... a cost reduced and stretched X would be a very good start for REAL van

CriticalBasedTheory 2026-01-13 13:42

It’s shorter and not hyper focused on family features like minivans are.

Sad-Yak-6410 2026-01-13 13:50

The falcon doors as cool as they are also prevent the use of a roof rack which could help with extra cargo on family trips or things like skis, canoes, bicycles, etc. I wouldn't mind seeing an X with regular doors as an option.

cannonball-tesla 2026-01-13 13:51

I have 4 kids in de age of 10 till 18. I’m originally from Holland and our kids a slightly taller than average. My both daughters of 10 and 15 easily fit in my MXP with 6 seats. I think it is because the captain seats in de middelrow.

The_Soldiet 2026-01-13 13:56

Black headliner makes the car feel small inside. Why do people want that?

wehooper4 2026-01-13 14:21

The problem is modern car seats are just too fucking big.

Spoiled_singleegg 2026-01-13 14:24

I like the grey tho

raghavr_7 2026-01-13 14:27

All parts already available on EPC!

KING_UDYR 2026-01-13 14:30

*Model X has entered the chat*

tightcall 2026-01-13 14:33

The light color headliner makes the interior cozier and lighter especially when you have the white seats. The black one makes it feel so dark and depressed, even cramped. When I went to bmw to order a new car, the Msport was available only with black headliner and after the test drive I just refused something like that.

mchinsky 2026-01-13 14:34

Those seats were never meant for adults

mchinsky 2026-01-13 14:35

I don't have the X but if it's like the Y the problem is that sloping roof. I wish Tesla would create a varient of the Y with a traditional SUV squared off back. It would weigh similar, be the exact same length and chasis, just have alot more USABLE space because you could put decent sized items all the way to the back. As it stands now, only very 'low' items can fit without the hatch jamming on close.

icy1007 2026-01-13 14:51

No, I am correct. It’s still got space for several suitcases and/or bags of groceries. The space behind the 3rd row and under the trunk is quite large and easily rivals a Model 3’s trunk when all seats are up. Model X has incredible space when the seats are down though.

icy1007 2026-01-13 14:51

No, the falcon wing doors are far superior to any other minivan.

BarnT88 2026-01-13 15:04

You’ll be able to have it ‘retrofitted’ by an independent workshop/garage like you can already get third party replacement headliners done for the car. I don’t see why your nearest workshop wouldn’t be able to just order the new genuine, black, Tesla headliner and fit for you. However if you mean would Tesla themselves offer it as a retrofit service? Of course they’re not going to. Most likely scenario there is you somehow ‘damage’ the majority of your headliner and when you pay them to replace it for you that you ask for the dark headliner.

xenner 2026-01-13 15:05

We can agree to disagree after I've been living with them daily. Wow factor does not translate to usefulness.

BarnT88 2026-01-13 15:06

Probably means the black headliner/bigger screen.

BarnT88 2026-01-13 15:07

If you have the ‘dual motor’ stamp on the back of your Y. That’s what they’re talking about. Guess it blends in better with the rear black Tesla logo/projection light.

AlhZK0 2026-01-13 15:07

It’s way too small

TechJ2025 2026-01-13 15:31

Does Tesla even care about the S and X anymore? It’s seems like the case. It’s long overdue for a refresh. They should just replace the X with the YL but add premium materials to it but not $100K premium materials.

icy1007 2026-01-13 15:35

It makes it feel more premium.

icy1007 2026-01-13 15:36

There is less legroom in the 6 seater. The 5 seater has far more rear legroom.

icy1007 2026-01-13 15:36

That's now the sharpest Tesla screen available.

The_Soldiet 2026-01-13 15:40

It's just a color, not a different materiell so it makes no difference. Black just makes everything shrink.

WorkingBake 2026-01-13 15:43

Does it?

Mackesanz 2026-01-13 15:47

I would agree for solid headliners (without a glass roof). But with one I don’t really see it, and my OCD feels happier with all colours matching (no random gray / beige, only black / white). It’s all up to preference though.

RelationshipHuge8175 2026-01-13 15:55

It's not the same thing at all.

RelationshipHuge8175 2026-01-13 15:55

I own one

AbleSeamonster 2026-01-13 16:05

How difficult would it be to LS swap one of these?

Ok-Equal-1885 2026-01-13 16:17

I agree. Not sure why everyone’s so hyped for black interiors—to me it’s claustrophobic and compressive. Although it may match the rest of the interior, it also “frames” the panoramic sunroof really poorly IMO. Either way, on the list of things that annoy me about my MY, the grey headliner does not make the cut.

icy1007 2026-01-13 16:46

Thought it was a microsuede headliner instead of the fabric?

softspokenprincess_ 2026-01-13 16:51

Me too. My husband and I agreed if we have another kid we are going to upgrade to a Tesla van. 🤣

NatKingSwole19 2026-01-13 17:16

I have a 7-seater with little kids, and while it's convenient in a pinch for trips across town, it sucks for longer road trips. Those tiny triangle windows (if you can call them that) are the only thing they can see out of, and my little kids have puked multiple times from motion sickness back there. Plus, two low profile booster seats back there makes buckling seatbelts impossible for little kids, so I'm always having to crawl back there and do it myself. The third row has come in handy plenty of times, but I'd almost rather have the second subtrunk instead. By the time I'm in the market for a new car, they'll be too big for the third row anyway.

Confident-Sector2660 2026-01-13 17:26

I think the premium sound system is much better from the back seat. In the front the standard is good

thesupernoodle 2026-01-13 17:58

I have done the same thing in service visits since the YL was announced and in their reach out’s to test drive. I’ve told them repeatedly It’s a case of where we we’d replace both of our Model Y’s instantly. The YL is the answer to everything. We’ve test driven others that have more than five seats, including the ID buzz, EX 90, ev9. (As well as the model X). They all fatally compromise on NACS, storage space, range, UI compared to a model YL. For those I don’t care about the falcon wing doors, the X is a poor value, much less not affordable for most. R1S & Gravity are not accessible enough yet to easily test drive, but also are >100K vehicle vehicles, and equally financially inaccessible for a mainstream family that needs even just five comfortably usable seats on a day-to-day basis.

CookieBootylicious 2026-01-13 18:36

Finally, a Tesla with more seats so I can disappoint even more friends with my autopilot stories at once!

evets702 2026-01-13 18:56

Damn… I understood what you wrote but I feel like I know Dutch now.

The_Soldiet 2026-01-13 19:14

Might be

Faria1906_ 2026-01-13 21:10

Are these upgrades planned for Europe as well?

Viridian95 2026-01-13 21:22

But they *just* "refreshed" it.

TechJ2025 2026-01-13 21:29

It needs a major refresh then. Lol.

FIRE_TSLAHeavy 2026-01-13 22:15

There is a small bump between the 2nd row captain chairs in the Model Y L. it is likely because of the BMS housing underneath. A slightly sloped floor to smooth out the bump would be better IMO

prestodigitarium 2026-01-14 00:49

This. Also, booster seats work well. My wife even sits back there sometimes when we're carrying guests. Not amazingly comfortable, but it's super helpful to have the capability.

Prior_Body4310 2026-01-14 02:43

Im glad I share the same thoughts as most people here, this is a slap on the face for the American consumer and most important market for tesla. I can't be sure but after this it looks like there is no Y L for the US. Personally I would never buy this as is worse than the 5 seater,  nothing or anyone fits there.

Prior_Body4310 2026-01-14 02:46

It looks like we will never get it. Even if it was the Y L. The right move is 6 seats. That car still too small for 7

Darkseidzz 2026-01-14 03:52

Please just give us a PROPER LARGE SUV!

I have the old 7 seater and regularly use it to transport 14-18yo kids (Explorer Scouts). For fairly short journeys & reasonably short people it does just fine really

Stein287 2026-01-14 13:34

Who would fit in that 3rd row with that roof slope?

isdbull 2026-01-14 14:28

What will happen when people start to realize that there are options out there that are roomy and look great? This looks just terribly poor. Headspace??? Legspace??? Hello???

icy1007 2026-01-14 16:00

If it is then it's not just a color change.

The-Puffy-Shirt 2026-01-15 00:02

My exact car seems to be $200ish more a month now for lease than it was when I ordered it in December! Glad I pulled the trigger. If curious it’s a Model Y Premium All-Wheel drive (12k miles a year) in Pearl White with 20” Helix 2.0 wheels.

I use my 7 seater all the time. I have 2 little kids who fit back there well. The other seats are for the inlaws. More space like the Model Y L would be nice though.

BikebutnotBeast 2026-01-15 06:32

I want the L with all the other updates it has. Not a copycat 7 seater.

BikebutnotBeast 2026-01-15 06:36

Legacy 7 seater has steel reinforcement about 150lbs worth.

It’s not even that much bigger. They should make the cyber trucks that they can’t sell into longer SUVs

idkausernamerntbh 2026-01-15 13:34

Hope the 3 can get the black headliner, I feel the 3 is missing out on a lot at this point

Useless_Advice_Guy 2026-01-15 15:34

That back seat is amazing for people who don't have legs

DiagCarFix 2026-01-15 17:17

no one will buy 7 seater unless it’s YL

spindrift_20 2026-01-16 11:10

They can’t see over the seats or out the window. It blows chunks.

Robert315 2026-01-16 14:13

7-seater eh... welp,. Great to see they've re-released that cash grab. Single shittiest thing Tesla has ever done.

CornholeSurprise 2026-01-16 23:49

They should have put the third row seats facing backwards like old school station wagons with the sub trunk for the leg room.

shaheedmalik 2026-01-18 23:12

It depends if it's the Model Y-L or not.

shaheedmalik 2026-01-18 23:13

Call it the Tesla Model V

shaheedmalik 2026-01-18 23:16

They need to turn the Model X into a full size SUV akin to a Yukon XL.
