Nothing to see here, this is the legacy Tesla Model Y 7-seater - not the new YL (extended version launched in China). What a downer and terrible move considering Americans are bigger families and also fatter in general.

You couldn’t before. Doubt this is different. The back seats are on rails. 5 seater they are not. Plus penthouse is different on 5 seater due to the sliding seats on the 7 seater. With that said enjoy your car. The very back really is tiny. My 4 year old loves it but even he doesn’t have much leg room

I’ve told the Tesla location by me when I come in for service, the day they bring the Model Y L is the day I get another Tesla. It seems like they hear it all the time. Seems dumb we haven’t gotten it yet.

Facts. Have had the 7 seater for 2 years now and used it once. My kids are now in elementary and those small seats seemed like an investment at the time, but once again proved I am terrible with making auto add-on choices lol.

You'd be surprised. Many people in Asian countries with cheap labour have chauffeurs for very ordinary cars. For instance, my uncle has a chauffeur for his Toyota in SouthEast Asia.

That sucks. I've been seriously researching a Tesla for our next vehicle but the 5 seater is a deal killer because it's not uncommon for us to have 5-6 people at a time. Yeah, it would work for the 5, but it's nice to be able to spread out a bit.

Yeah I saw that they added the larger screen but I wasn't sure if it was the QHD screen like the Performance has or a normal 16-in HD screen. The website doesn't seem to give any specifics. It just says 16-in display for the premium models and 16-in qhd for performance. Has anyone found anything confirming one way or the other?

It is the same as the Performance. The QHD isn’t really noticeable though tbh. But always nice to have the newest version

In USA, I would get the YL if Tesla brings it here. In China, there are many choices beside the YL from price point, luxury features…etc. There is no competition in US in terms of value for money.

Test drove a new performance y recently. There was no noticeable difference in the screen.

Except mini van doors are arguably better. I like my X but the doors are just an annoyance. (unless you're buckling a child in a carseat in the rain...)

It’s shorter and not hyper focused on family features like minivans are.

The falcon doors as cool as they are also prevent the use of a roof rack which could help with extra cargo on family trips or things like skis, canoes, bicycles, etc. I wouldn't mind seeing an X with regular doors as an option.

I have 4 kids in de age of 10 till 18. I’m originally from Holland and our kids a slightly taller than average. My both daughters of 10 and 15 easily fit in my MXP with 6 seats. I think it is because the captain seats in de middelrow.

The light color headliner makes the interior cozier and lighter especially when you have the white seats. The black one makes it feel so dark and depressed, even cramped. When I went to bmw to order a new car, the Msport was available only with black headliner and after the test drive I just refused something like that.

I don't have the X but if it's like the Y the problem is that sloping roof. I wish Tesla would create a varient of the Y with a traditional SUV squared off back. It would weigh similar, be the exact same length and chasis, just have alot more USABLE space because you could put decent sized items all the way to the back. As it stands now, only very 'low' items can fit without the hatch jamming on close.

No, I am correct. It’s still got space for several suitcases and/or bags of groceries. The space behind the 3rd row and under the trunk is quite large and easily rivals a Model 3’s trunk when all seats are up. Model X has incredible space when the seats are down though.

You’ll be able to have it ‘retrofitted’ by an independent workshop/garage like you can already get third party replacement headliners done for the car. I don’t see why your nearest workshop wouldn’t be able to just order the new genuine, black, Tesla headliner and fit for you. However if you mean would Tesla themselves offer it as a retrofit service? Of course they’re not going to. Most likely scenario there is you somehow ‘damage’ the majority of your headliner and when you pay them to replace it for you that you ask for the dark headliner.

If you have the ‘dual motor’ stamp on the back of your Y. That’s what they’re talking about. Guess it blends in better with the rear black Tesla logo/projection light.

Does Tesla even care about the S and X anymore? It’s seems like the case. It’s long overdue for a refresh. They should just replace the X with the YL but add premium materials to it but not $100K premium materials.

There is less legroom in the 6 seater. The 5 seater has far more rear legroom.

It's just a color, not a different materiell so it makes no difference. Black just makes everything shrink.

I would agree for solid headliners (without a glass roof). But with one I don’t really see it, and my OCD feels happier with all colours matching (no random gray / beige, only black / white). It’s all up to preference though.

I agree. Not sure why everyone’s so hyped for black interiors—to me it’s claustrophobic and compressive. Although it may match the rest of the interior, it also “frames” the panoramic sunroof really poorly IMO. Either way, on the list of things that annoy me about my MY, the grey headliner does not make the cut.

I have a 7-seater with little kids, and while it's convenient in a pinch for trips across town, it sucks for longer road trips. Those tiny triangle windows (if you can call them that) are the only thing they can see out of, and my little kids have puked multiple times from motion sickness back there. Plus, two low profile booster seats back there makes buckling seatbelts impossible for little kids, so I'm always having to crawl back there and do it myself. The third row has come in handy plenty of times, but I'd almost rather have the second subtrunk instead. By the time I'm in the market for a new car, they'll be too big for the third row anyway.

I think the premium sound system is much better from the back seat. In the front the standard is good

I have done the same thing in service visits since the YL was announced and in their reach out’s to test drive. I’ve told them repeatedly It’s a case of where we we’d replace both of our Model Y’s instantly. The YL is the answer to everything. We’ve test driven others that have more than five seats, including the ID buzz, EX 90, ev9. (As well as the model X). They all fatally compromise on NACS, storage space, range, UI compared to a model YL. For those I don’t care about the falcon wing doors, the X is a poor value, much less not affordable for most. R1S & Gravity are not accessible enough yet to easily test drive, but also are >100K vehicle vehicles, and equally financially inaccessible for a mainstream family that needs even just five comfortably usable seats on a day-to-day basis.

Finally, a Tesla with more seats so I can disappoint even more friends with my autopilot stories at once!

There is a small bump between the 2nd row captain chairs in the Model Y L. it is likely because of the BMS housing underneath. A slightly sloped floor to smooth out the bump would be better IMO

This. Also, booster seats work well. My wife even sits back there sometimes when we're carrying guests. Not amazingly comfortable, but it's super helpful to have the capability.

Im glad I share the same thoughts as most people here, this is a slap on the face for the American consumer and most important market for tesla. I can't be sure but after this it looks like there is no Y L for the US. Personally I would never buy this as is worse than the 5 seater,  nothing or anyone fits there.

I have the old 7 seater and regularly use it to transport 14-18yo kids (Explorer Scouts). For fairly short journeys & reasonably short people it does just fine really

My exact car seems to be $200ish more a month now for lease than it was when I ordered it in December! Glad I pulled the trigger. If curious it’s a Model Y Premium All-Wheel drive (12k miles a year) in Pearl White with 20” Helix 2.0 wheels.

I use my 7 seater all the time. I have 2 little kids who fit back there well. The other seats are for the inlaws. More space like the Model Y L would be nice though.

I want the L with all the other updates it has. Not a copycat 7 seater.

Legacy 7 seater has steel reinforcement about 150lbs worth.
