I would love a longer range Model Y, even if it's RWD and 18-inch wheels.

Ok-House8678 2025-10-09 14:59

Same. Only thing that would make me move on from my 2020 MY AWD is a real world 300 mile model

[deleted] 2025-10-09 15:01

That’s 500 miles. Update: sorry was not aware Chinese 800km don’t directly translate to miles. Read comments below.

[deleted] 2025-10-09 15:03

Chinese use different range standard

ZeroWashu 2025-10-09 15:04

Which when converted using the typical ratio of EPA vs CLTC nets around 361 miles of range which is basically where the RWD Y "Premium" is with its 357 miles

MrAgility888 2025-10-09 15:06

The Model 3 RWD in China has a range of 830 km (516 miles), but on the EPA test cycle it's only 363 miles. So I wouldn't get too excited about a 800 km model Y having over 400 miles of range.

CarCooler 2025-10-09 15:12

Yep, pretty impressive, but this range is according to the CLTC (China Light-Duty Vehicle Test Cycle). EPA in the US has stricter range calculations for EVs.

CarCooler 2025-10-09 15:13

Yep, exactly. China's CLTC seems to be even more generous than WLTP in giving out range for EVs.

babblingducks 2025-10-09 15:43

The MY LR RWD at 90% charge does it reasonably well. The new EPA standards made a big difference to that end last year.

dis340 2025-10-09 16:04

We have that in Europe. Long range RWD, 387miles (WLTP). It has 19 inch wheels, but yeah, it has significantly longer range than the base RWD.

mrdoubleb78 2025-10-09 16:15

Yep, important to note before everyone loses their sh\*t over some imaginary 100 kWh variant. The same happened with the Model 3 a few months ago as well: the LR RWD varian was previously not available in China, but was being already sold in Europe for some time.

Meats10 2025-10-09 16:27

whats the range of the currently Long Range RWD with 18s? I know you cant purchase it with 18s, but does anyone have any idea

Roboculon 2025-10-09 16:34

That’s not going to stop us from upvoting each and every post about new cars in China, implying some major breakthrough in range.

CrossRook 2025-10-09 16:35

what standard is the most accurate for ev range? is it actually the US for once?

MDInvesting 2025-10-09 16:46

None, the type of driving and conditions is too big of a factor.

lylesback2 2025-10-09 18:37

The new model Y standard comes with 18 inch wheels. I am not sure how much more km you would get out of 18 vs 19. I assume similar between 19 and 20s? Model Y LR AWD: 19: 526 20: 488 An extra 38km per charge

jandmc88 2025-10-09 19:42

Chinas CLTC is like the "NEFZ" in germany before WLTP have been introduced in Europe. NEFZ was around 50% of real world.

Ok-House8678 2025-10-09 20:09

Yeah mine capped out at like 282 on the screen within 5 months. I can’t even get 200 miles on the freeway.

EnvironmentalClue218 2025-10-09 20:18

So are they just adding a bigger battery and increasing weight?

ElGuano 2025-10-09 21:14

It’s crazy to me how important range is that everyone goes ape bananas whenever a significant range increase is rumored, but when you actually talk about range all these “you never drive 300mi without stopping” wackos come out of the woodwork.

[deleted] 2025-10-09 21:18

It depends on the context. The reason China's standard provides higher ranges is because they account for their horrendous traffic where EVs shine.

technerdx6000 2025-10-09 21:30

Multiply EPA range by 0.8 to get accurate real world range

Jackwilliamsiv 2025-10-09 21:52

Soooooooo he can sell his cars over there but they can't sell theirs over here??? 😒

Grandpas_Spells 2025-10-10 00:18

Nowhere near that range.

Suitable_Switch5242 2025-10-10 00:36

357mi EPA ≈ 500mi CLTC ≈ 800km CLTC The difference is just between EPA and CLTC ratings. The same car gets a higher range rating in China because the tests are different.

epihocic 2025-10-10 00:38

They're made in China. Chinese manufacturers are more than welcome to manufacture in the US.

Grandpas_Spells 2025-10-10 01:20

Ah thanks

casino_r0yale 2025-10-10 03:58

Range is the only reason I'm considering a Lucid Gravity. Just want to be able to get from Bay Area to Tahoe without a forced stop in Placerville or Auburn

jedi2155 2025-10-10 04:08

Driving is way slower in China, currently here for a few weeks.

spinwizard69 2025-10-10 05:22

I wish people would stop the focus on range and instead focus on battery capacity. This especially in colder climates. A car that gets 300 miles in great weather but can barely manage 150 in extreme cold isn't useful as the range number implies.

spinwizard69 2025-10-10 05:29

As MDInvesting points out none of the range estimation really mean much. Cold weather can dramatically impact current battery technologies and frankly is a bigger concern for us than optimal range numbers these programs seem to test for. Extreme COLD weather is where gas cars, once you get them started, win hands down. I'm actually surprised that Tesla doesn't insulate their cars to save on heating and cooling, power usage. If you are driving 60 mph in -20 degree F weather the cooling impact has to be huge which lead to lots of power simply to heat stuff up.

spinwizard69 2025-10-10 05:41

Funny I can remember running a gas guzzler from full tank until the warning light told me to get off the expressway and find gas. Generally they are right that going past 4 hours of driving is pretty hard to do. However in an EV the millage number is an optimal number, everything that takes power on that trip shortens ones range. Which is why I rather see the argument center around battery capacity especially in extreme conditions. Because if the environment works against you and you are only getting 150 miles that is a huge problem. Then there is the upcoming reality that when FSD is truly autonomous it is conceivable that one could go to sleep for 8 hours and wake up ready to enjoy the day. I actually see FSD creating demand for much longer ranges in Tesla's. 500 miles would be a good start for a next gen vehicle.

DOE_ZELF_NORMAAL 2025-10-10 07:01

800+ km CLTC which is a ridiculous estimation to make chinese cars look good. Compare that to like 500km EPA.

ihave2asku 2025-10-10 13:20

I have the LR rwd and 300 miles is like real world range. Degradation already has the pack down to 350 ish miles and i'm not driving down to 0%. I've only charged it to 100% like 2 or 3 times in the last year. Daily i run it between 30 and 75%. Only for long distance trips do i go to 100%.

lastlaugh100 2025-10-10 15:07

cries in midwest

Suitable_Switch5242 2025-10-10 17:00

This is the same Model Y LR RWD that’s already available in the US. China just uses different range ratings that give bigger numbers.

Quin1617 2025-10-12 00:40

Is it true that it’s very chaotic?

Quin1617 2025-10-12 00:53

Yep. I’d purposely leave home at 11 or midnight so that I’ll be ready to fall asleep and wake up at my destination.

Suitable_Switch5242 2025-10-12 15:36

The EPA ratings give lower numbers than WLTP (Europe) or CLTC (China), but they are also more variable across manufacturers since the EPA test has additional test cycles that manufacturers can choose to run, and manufacturers can do their own tests for winter range instead of using the standard multiplier. So two cars with similar real-world range may get pretty different EPA ratings depending on how much effort the manufacturer put in to additional testing. WLTP is supposedly more even across manufacturers, but gives higher numbers since it targets a lower average driving speed.

jedi2155 2025-10-12 17:13

Local streets are very chaotic, but organized chaos. Everyone is a good driver because if you aren't, there is literally a camera every 3-5th light pole. Their is a social scoring system where if you make too many mistakes, you will have your license revoked. Their highways are not free like the US as its all toll roaded so very empty and clear. Amazingly nice to drive. What shocked me the most was that 50-80% of the vehicles i saw in Shanghai was already EVs. Other parts like still have a very high adoption rate. The price is also insane, 80,000 Yuan for a 200-300 mile range EV with 0% interest rate (\~$11,000). Even the rural rice farmers out in the country side was already on EV's.

spinwizard69 2025-10-13 17:15

I just retired and frankly if this is something that can happen real soon it would be a reason to buy a Tesla for me. I just imagine exploring the country while the car takes me to my next destination at night. Then you have the entire day to explore that destination. It would be huge leverage for such travel, basically every day is not available for fun in the sun.

Quin1617 2025-10-13 22:13

As someone who can’t travel by car alone because of a restricted license(vision) it’d be a game changer. Robotaxi is awesome, but I want my own car that can take me anywhere I want to go, and I’d never fly unless the drive is like 20 hours long). Even without FSD I already love Teslas, but that prospect I’ll never even consider any other brand.

mcalr3 2025-11-09 10:54

And the American one counts for huge % spent at highway speeds

deeperest 2025-11-18 15:08

Sympathizes in Canadian.
