while we are not the hottest area, we are in the 90s for the most part and a chance at 99 this week, I will say I have been pleasantly surprised at how well the new Y's roof keeps the heat down. I did do the windows except windshield as that is illegal here and the only real heat I feel is when the sun is coming in from the front. This roof is certainly far better than what the 2018 3 had. Though I understand some will want more there are inserts from 3rd parties that work to blunt direct sun but leave the glass there when you want it.
Probably helps with road noise too.

I've seen clear ceramic tint offered at our local tint shop. Doing my windshield was worth every penny and despite it being illegal (I didn't do the clear but a 50% black), I haven't had any issues. It isn't the cure to the heat but it certainly helps

Yep. EVs are expensive because batteries. Tesla was never trying to be the Apple/Mercedes of EVs. The plan from the start was: Build the OG Roadster, use that money to grow and build cheaper models(S and X), use that money to grow and build an even *cheaper* car(3/Y). Obviously that wasn’t good enough, so they’re taking it a step further and are building *another* affordable model.

I don’t think that these changes would make the car significantly cheaper. The main change would probably be a smaller battery and a smaller engine. Hope I am wrong, but my bet is that is will be more expensive that the lower Model 3 trim. Although it will probably have good sales, people used to love the Model Y, but the sales of the new version have been poor because the car is too expensive. A model Y for 35-40K would have its market.
A steel/aluminium/cf/etc roof will always be stronger and rigid than a glass roof. But as the car was designed before a glass roof from the beginning it won't make much of a difference.
Once you have two car seats in the back, middle seat is done. Then you have two strollers in the trunk and it’s full. I’m over 6’ and have to move the chair more forward to accommodate the car seats… the space goes fast

I am no expert on material structural engineering, but I imagine the glass roof is thicker and stronger than the thin metal in a car roof, but I could be extremely wrong. EDIT: looking it up, it seems that glass roofs provide more safety for the passengers than a traditional metal roof. But that was just perusing a couple sources.

I love my glass roof. It does burn the hell out of head during summer (I live in south Florida), but the light from it and the openness of it make the cabin feel much lighter

Yeah anyone who claims the any tesla models are already "stripped down" has clearly not been in a basic economy car in a while. My car doesn't have powered seat controls, it can only slide forward and lean back. It doesn't have heated mirrors. It doesn't have auto folding mirrors. It doesn't have auto dimming mirrors. No heated or ventilated seats. No heated steering wheel. No rear vents. No HEPA filter. Only one cabin air filter with a weak blower and average cooling. Only has dumb cruise control. No wireless chargers. One USB port. No powered folding rear seats. No automatic trunk that can learn to stop at a specific height. No fancy light bars or interior lighting. No double paned windows. No soft touch materials throughout. Doesn't even have auto wipers or auto dimming headlights, let alone matrix head lights. No fancy soft closing covers for cupholders or storage. There's plenty more things my car lacks compared to a Model Y as well but that list is already quite extensive. Plus a lot of the software things I expect Tesla to keep. Like phone as key and all the app access stuff. If they can get the base price into the mid 30s then it would still be compelling assuming range is similar and you keep all the other software tech. With all the cheaper parts maintenance should be cheaper too which makes total cost of ownership lower which adds to the value. If we still had the tax credit going forward then it'd really start making sense. Especially if you can option some of the higher priced things that come with the normal model Y, like heated/powered seats.

I don’t own a model Y but I often get them as Ubers in Vegas, and I’m constantly surprised at how the full glass roof is both not hot, and I can stare directly out of it in the middle of a hot day and not have to squint. It has an awesome tint job that’s more visible than typical tint.
I don’t like sunroofs at all, not even on old cars. Plus there is no shade/slide to cover it on a Tesla. As a driver I don’t see the glass roof anyway, as it’s not in my field of view. But it always got the attention of my passengers, in a good way. Being standard it was nice, but I wouldn’t pay a single dime extra for it if it were an option.
I don’t understand the problems with the glass roof. I just blast the AC to 50 degrees 15 mins before I get in and it’s fine after that.

Source of proof? Steel car roofs are typically fairly thin and the real strength is from still body ribs, Cars with steel roofs don't have a thick slab of steel up there.

Keep in mind that cars that have steel roofs do not have bullet-proof thick heavy slabs of steel. Instead, they all have thin sheets of metal, and the real strength is steel "ribs" which go across from one side to the other. The actual roof -- like all the body panels -- is just a thin mostly aesthetic skin. Steel thickness in car body panels hasn't been structural for decades. Remember all those calendar pictures from the 50s and 60s of "girl of the month" laying on the hood of an muscle-car? Try that today and the hood would dent like aluminum foil. Which, in the case of Tesla, is exactly what the hoods are made of (not complaining; love my Teslas).

Do I have a different definition of affordable? In Europe our cheapest electric choice is the Dacia Spring, which starts at around €15-20k. Historically, Tesla has been moving mountains in terms of pricing with their first-principles approach. Assuming we're talking a stripped-to-the-max extremely barebones Model Y (low range, few options) why couldn't affordable be in that 15-20k range? Genuine question from a car noob btw.
In Europe is more like 40-50K. If they release a 35K version it would sell very well. 25K would be amazing, but I am not sure if current tech allows for a EV to be that cheap, at least with the performance and range people expect from a Tesla.

You can fit 3 kids seats at the back of a Y, I'm doing it. 3rd seat is just a height adjustment so takes a little bit less space, other two are cybex seats so by far not the smallest. It's tight, and we knew it, but the biggest one will soon be tall enough not to need the seat. Still plenty of space in the trunk. Not a big car but that's also what we wanted.

As a parent of three, I’ll suggest Diono’s Radian 3R seat! I can fit 3 cars seats in my Model 3, and it’s not cramped. The seat also lasts the entirety of the child’s need for extra safety, from rear facing infant, to booster only.
If you want to do even more you can get 70% ceramic tint to windshield that you can’t tell is there. Will block out more UV. But if you’re happy don’t worry about it. Happy miles!

The price in the US will probably not be far off from the current base Model Y with the tax credit. If you’re in the US and qualify for the tax credit I think you’d be better off buying now.

Either act now and buy new Model Y Juniper with $7,500 tax credit or wait and buy the strip down version for the same amount out of pocket, but with all luxury features gone. Heck yeah! I have a 22MYLR, we use it for an airport taxi service, 130k miles on it today, I've only replaced the front driver upper control arm and the EPB. Doesn't have a squeak or rattle anywhere.

I have 2 thoughts about that. 1. They keep the same hardware, just in case someone wants to upgrade to FSD. Saves a future hardware upgrade, and the $8k is pure profit 2. They put in a crippled computer, providing only Autopilot, and upgrade it if someone forks out the $8k. Less profit on the $8k, but only lost on those who upgrade. I bet they would take option 2, based on the estimated uptake for FSD.

Did you look at getting an "eyebrow" tint in the front? The part of the window you look through is still clear but the tint really reduces the sun on the dash.

But this cheaper Model Y does provide a chance to compare glass and metal roofs for crash safety (all other factors being mostly the same), so hopefully they will provide detailed safety test results that we can compare with the glass-roof Model Y. … But I’m not holding my breath.

The sunroof in the S makes so much noise when it's open that I hardly ever open it anyway. I also wish the leading edge of the hatch was metal instead of glass so that I could mount my bike rack to it.

I feel like this is a half baked attempt at something cheaper. Wasn't there a real model 2 in the works? I thought the glass roof solved two problems, one in assembly for robots to easily access the cabin area and the other to salvage critical rear seat head room. I really think Tesla will struggle after a boost in Q3 (due to last chance of the incentives). After thinking Elon had learned from the falcon wing doors his list of blunders or at best heavy delays is really long and after model Y launch in 2020, Roadster, Semi, Cybertruck, FSD, external distractions, tesla roof, cybercab etc are not ahead of anything. Model 3 and Y were state of the art at launch, all the other products coming have a TON of competition already ahead. The only other aspect that is successful is the Energy section, but also that now has very competent and capable competition.

For some reason, US car seats are much larger than in RoW. I say “for some reason” because it’s not like our traffic crash outcomes are any better— in fact cars trade off with guns as the leading cause of death among <18 year olds in the US— so it’s not like they’re improving safety or anything. They’re just large for the sake of it.
Honestly, besides the ventilated seat loss, everything else about this version sounds superior to the current version.

From the video, there’s just a big open area now, reminiscent of early Model S. I prefer it. Makes the car feel more open, and if you really want I’m sure accessory makers will offer dozens of options to fill the space. Much better than just being forced to take whatever Tesla decides is the best use of space.

Cars are a depreciating asset. The only thing that increases in value, is your time. You just simply have less of it as you get older. For all of the hyper-intelligent people at Tesla, this is a strategic miss. It feels kind of the air being pulled out of the room similar to when Cybertruck was revealed. That would be a cool option. Although, carbon fiber isn't the best insulator either, but it would cut down on direct IR radiation and light radiation.
It would be easy enough to add a layer of insulation under the carbon fiber roof panel and then line it so it matches the rest of the roof panels that the car comes with. So it would look more like a traditional interior roof from the inside with a normal headliner. It would cost less, be a lot lighter and no worries about it getting broken. If nothing else I feel like someone should make that as a potential replacement for the glass roof for cars that get a cracked/broken roof, even if Tesla never offers it.
