Two photos posted on X by [@DriveGreen80167](https://x.com/DriveGreen80167). No glass roof, no second screen in the back. The second photo still shows a turn stalk and gear shifting on the screen. https://preview.redd.it/sr32gefch9ff1.jpg?width=1355&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=edd014b3c10127aa2fa79ffc0cccc7fddaf1872c https://preview.redd.it/lpb9u7ech9ff1.jpg?width=1290&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e0ad52b0dde9582db49129104e5e54f1c6fe4348

No glass roof is really sad.

turns2stone 2025-07-26 22:09

Lots of people are looking forward to a no-glass option. I have mine covered by a $20 shade from Amazon and had to pay an exorbitant amount to get the rest tinted well enough to block out the heat in my Texas summers.

950771dd 2025-07-26 22:17

A fixed panoramic roof is laminated glass and typically provides better acoustic insulation compared to a thin metal sheet, and in metal roofs there is not that much insulation material either (to not reduce the space too much)

Electrical_Quality_6 2025-07-26 22:28

performance is the real deal the speed and precision its unmatched

throwaway123454321 2025-07-26 22:30

It also makes my car crazy fucking hot during the summer.

PixelizedTed 2025-07-26 22:33

I love the glass roof, but plenty of people don’t. I think this is a great choice they made for an affordable model.

omnibossk 2025-07-26 22:33

I would rather not have a glass roof if I could choose

Zephyr4813 2025-07-26 22:36

Stfu its literally supposed to be as cheap to manufacture as possible

asd167169 2025-07-26 22:41

Is it a shorten version of model y?

Miami_da_U 2025-07-26 22:44

It's not literally going to be exposed metal. It's gonna have some type of fabric too as well as the insulation. So I very much doubt that glass is better than Fabric+insulation+metal

atomicskiracer 2025-07-26 23:07

There is no shortened version, and I’m blown away how anyone thought that was a financially viable option. It’s just a stripped y.

turns2stone 2025-07-26 23:10

Ya it would probably cost $200M just to design/retool/test a shortened wheel base version. Literally adding incremental costs to a vehicle that's supposed to be cheap(er).

[deleted] 2025-07-26 23:10

I’m the opposite. I’d pay extra to not have the glass roof. My partner can’t stand the sun baking her head and I can’t stand the $2k I have already spent replacing cracked roof panels from rock chips on the freeway.

Fun-Sundae4060 2025-07-26 23:39

Thinking about it, I don’t actually know anyone who enjoys their scalp getting cooked by the sun in the summer

M1A1Death 2025-07-26 23:45

Mine is covered 100% of the time. I only ever uncover it to check for damage when I install the roof rails

Vo_Mimbre 2025-07-26 23:54

I love the glass roof but only for half a year. And if that is the only major change to make a model Y affordable, good on Tesla. More people driving these is a good thing.

bgarza18 2025-07-26 23:56

Not really, makes sense for a cheaper car not to have an entirely glass roof. Better for interior climate control and passenger eyeballs.

DeathChill 2025-07-26 23:59

I never understand this. My glass roof has never made me feel hot. I was driving it during the heat-dome in BC, which set records in Canada, and still never felt like the roof was doing anything to me. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/2021_Western_North_America_heat_wave

Short-Service1248 2025-07-27 00:04

What? If I could have chosen I would have opted for no glass roof . Makes the car an oven

FoxBearBear 2025-07-27 00:35

So you can throw stones at others eh? /s

yeah__good_okay 2025-07-27 00:41

It really is an example of form vs function. Looks cool, but not the most practical

SonicDethmonkey 2025-07-27 00:42

Honestly I’d prefer that.

wgp3 2025-07-27 00:51

Considering they're releasing a longer version of the model y it's not really that hard to imagine them releasing a slightly smaller version as well. Especially since they claimed new models were releasing. Not just new trims.

njrun 2025-07-27 01:01

I put a shade up on my roof like 3 years ago when my kid was a newborn. Never took it down since it keeps the car a bit cooler in the summer.

MisterBumpingston 2025-07-27 01:06

It definitely does. I’m in Australia and ensure our hot summers where we don’t have the ozone layer to protect us. The thing to understand is that the roof glass has additives to block the majority (something like up to 98%) of UV rays so it’s hard, but not impossible to get sunburnt from rays coming from the roof. However, the glass heats up a lot and there’s no insulation to protect the cabin from the heat it generates. So if your head is anywhere near it you’ll feel the radiant heat. Edit: I have Shanghai built Model Y with black interior if that adds more context.

Blazah 2025-07-27 01:08

I hate the glass roof. Covered it and will never uncover it.

Blazah 2025-07-27 01:09

brother move to FL and you will understand. Canada has no real heat dome LOL

Vo_Mimbre 2025-07-27 01:13

I like taking mine out for Fall and Winter, but yea it helps a lot in the blistering sun

bigpoppa611 2025-07-27 02:09

Does it sag after a while? This 100+ degree heat eats up energy. It’s that time of year

[deleted] 2025-07-27 02:38

DeathChill 2025-07-27 02:42

I live in BC which has high humidity, like Florida, I imagine. I literally linked to the event I’m referring to and our numbers are much higher than Florida records. I’m not sure what you’re talking about as we have you beat on temperature records during the heat-dome though. Not even by a small margin either. >>On June 29, the temperature in Lytton, British Columbia, hit 49.6 °C (121.3 °F), the highest temperature ever recorded in Canada,[1] although a nearby more modern station reported that the extreme was 1 °C lower.[49] The stations were temporarily isolated by the Lytton wildfire the next day. The record occurred after consecutively setting new record highs of 46.6 °C (115.9 °F) on June 27 and 47.9 °C (118.2 °F) on June 28.[50] It is also the highest temperature ever recorded north of 45°N, **the highest temperature in the U.S. or Canada recorded outside the Desert Southwest**, and higher than the absolute maximum temperatures of Europe or South America.[51] For reference, the highest temperature ever recorded in Florida was 43°C in 1931.

DeathChill 2025-07-27 02:49

I have heard the lack of ozone creates a much bigger issue, but never looked into it. I believe it though!

LoudMusic 2025-07-27 02:50

It's bad when your interior leaks.

Lazy_Gremlin 2025-07-27 03:00

I have an aftermarket one that is a 2 piece design so I can have just the rear portion in (also to keep sun off the baby) and there's no sag issues. It has clips that go along the edge between the glass and trim and stays put.

[deleted] 2025-07-27 03:02

[deleted]

astros1991 2025-07-27 03:43

So this is Tesla’s answer to the affordable model? Lol, they really lost to the competitors on the B segment then.

Competitive_Guava_33 2025-07-27 03:57

How much would no roof window and rear screen save? 1000 bucks?

philupandgo 2025-07-27 04:00

It's true. Australia is the skin cancer champ.

DrXaos 2025-07-27 04:17

Musk killed the actual redesign. For no good reason, other than perhaps he wasn’t involved with designing it.

blainestang 2025-07-27 04:19

I’m relatively tall and live in FL and I never, ever thought about my head feeling hot because of the glass roof in my 3. The only conclusion I can draw considering the many people who claim they feel lots of heat coming through is that there have been MAJOR variations in the glass provided by Tesla.

Straight-Grand-4144 2025-07-27 04:42

Bro..... Why don't y'all just tint the glass roof like many of us did with ceramic tint?

Fun-Sundae4060 2025-07-27 05:00

I do lol I have 5% on both my MS and M3 But I wouldn’t have to tint if it was metal in the first place

Adventurous_Term_514 2025-07-27 05:28

From what I understand it will only make it cheap enough to essentially stay the same price as today’s base model after the tax incentive is gone. Turns out getting a president had previously talked very negatively about EVs elected was bad for business🤷‍♂️

beerissweety 2025-07-27 05:52

It should be Model Y SE. I love it

grecy 2025-07-27 06:37

So buy the model with the glass roof.

FuzzyFr0g 2025-07-27 06:54

The double layered acoustic glass will insulate more than a solid roof with liner. It’s also alot stronger. You will hear a big difference with heavy rain or light hail. People generally underestimate the power and strength of glass, especially how dense and heavy it is

FuzzyFr0g 2025-07-27 06:56

The new glass roof of the juniper is alot better with this.

abatwithitsmouthopen 2025-07-27 07:30

Literally been in 100 degree Fahrenheit weather with direct sunlight and never had head getting hot. Maybe because I’ve only driven model 3 highland and juniper Tesla model y I think they might have made the glass better. If anything what feels really hot is the windshield and front windows. Crazy amount of sunlight comes in and makes the entire car hot.

JustSayTech 2025-07-27 07:43

Yea but they bring comfort to the people who like them.

JustSayTech 2025-07-27 07:44

Times that by millions of cars sold per year, those cost add up a ton.

astros1991 2025-07-27 07:54

Yea.. that’s a loss for Tesla. Could’ve at least use the Cybercab platform to further cur down production cost of that platform. But we’ll see what happens next. Musk did say there’ll be product demo by year end which would be the “best” demo ever.

Status_Job_1522 2025-07-27 08:24

I read a larger cybercab. Just put a steering wheel in it. Already steer by wire like the CT

omnibossk 2025-07-27 08:29

Yea, it gets to be a hassle real fast. Also in tunnels, at least my model make ekstra noise from the glass roof.

omnibossk 2025-07-27 08:31

Lol, but I think this is a really good move by Tesla

[deleted] 2025-07-27 08:50

Only if they’d be selling these for the same price as the current Y. What he asks is how much cheaper this will be.

astros1991 2025-07-27 09:26

A platform can handle different segments. I designed a low cost platform in the past to cover sedans and low cost SUVs before. This is not difficult. Tesla has done this with the Model 3 and Model Y. But in a traditional car OEM, a platform could easily fit in 4-5 models for multiple geographical areas.

yeah__good_okay 2025-07-27 11:27

I haven't noticed that with my wife's but I'll keep an ear out next time I'm going through Boston's underground tunnels

phido3000 2025-07-27 11:34

The current size becomes the shorter version. Making a shorter version would cost more money.. it would be more expensive....

rainer_d 2025-07-27 11:43

The EV industry has long since passed the point where incentives make sense. Elon had believed that the current administration would make good on the promise of getting rid of fossil fuel subsidies, too.

omnibossk 2025-07-27 12:12

It’s not a huge issue and the roof is not leaking even if it sounds like that sometimes. I think it is due to the gaps between the glass panels on the model 3 (pre refresh)

Adventurous_Term_514 2025-07-27 12:31

What exactly is the point the EV industry passed and why does that point make it make sense the remove the incentives? Regardless, the previous administration had no plans to remove those incentives and those incentives would obviously help Tesla tremendously. At the end of the day, no matter the cognitive gymnastics you perform it will never make sense from a business standpoint to contribute to making your product more expensive.

optimiism 2025-07-27 12:45

I’d wager the real cost cut will be batteries

rainer_d 2025-07-27 12:46

The prudent thing to do would have been to remove subsidies from ICE, too. But neither the previous nor the current administration managed to do that, for entirely different reasons. Subsidies are like crack. You can never get enough and you can never get off them because manufacturers will just add them on top.

CG_throwback 2025-07-27 14:00

Which half? Not the hot one ?

Bluebottle_coffee 2025-07-27 14:29

I had to pay 1.7k for a new roof glass, rather not have it honestly I can't even see it driving

Vo_Mimbre 2025-07-27 14:36

Right. I like it late fall to early spring during cold months since I like looking out it. But come summer I put up barriers easy to install and remove, though I’ve already broken some clips.

steve93446 2025-07-27 15:15

Is it my imagination or does half the center console look like it’s missing?

Adventurous_Term_514 2025-07-27 15:18

And go against the oil industry? Are you out of your mind? They didn’t do all the lobbying for fun.

[deleted] 2025-07-27 16:56

I ended up putting a very dark ceramic tent on my roof glass. You definitely don’t feel that heat coming down on you. Well worth it.

fizzerd1 2025-07-27 18:09

Has anyone found it annoying when looking at the glass roof from inside the car and getting the mirror type finish? I felt it limited me to clearly see the sky and if I cannot do that then what is the point of the glass roof? I dont really want to see my reflection…

Miami_da_U 2025-07-27 18:22

I don’t doubt the strength aspect, given Tesla has continually promoted those positives for years now. It’s also more expensive and again I very much doubt it has as good acoustic or thermal characteristics as this version of the roof will…. Well maybe not purely because this is on the cheapest version… so it’s not like it’s an equivalent level vehicle that that’s be ensuring is as good or better (while still being cheaper, just not AS cheap as this will be)

atomicskiracer 2025-07-27 18:35

It’s significantly cheaper to make a current design longer than it does to make it shorter- they also charge more for the modified car. A shortened y makes zero financial sense

feurie 2025-07-27 18:42

Does the shade really keep the car cooler? If there’s energy getting through the glass, it’ll just hit the shade and warm it up which would then radiate into the car.

feurie 2025-07-27 18:43

What “redesign”? There was no redesign. There was going to be a cheaper vehicle based off completely new production techniques made in Mexico. Politics and the market made it not make sense to do that immediately, and not risk billions and billions of dollars. So this is the middle ground.

feurie 2025-07-27 18:44

To the competitors losing money selling those cars. Thats the point.

feurie 2025-07-27 18:44

I never feel it in my Tesla anyway.

UltraLisp 2025-07-27 21:23

Sun wouldn't be directly hitting the [most likely] black seats though.

astros1991 2025-07-27 22:19

Like who?

biggsteve81 2025-07-28 01:33

The glass roof is actually functional in that it gives about 1 extra inch of headroom for the same overall vehicle height. That's why it is popular in EVs - it lets them lower the profile for aerodynamic reasons while maintaining interior space.

creepilincolnbot 2025-07-28 03:05

How much ?

RealKillering 2025-07-28 04:07

I never got the overheating part since, with ac I don’t notice it. Are people talking about leaving it alone in the sun or actually while driving?

glmory 2025-07-28 05:04

If the shade is white the light mostly leaves.

Br3akabl3 2025-07-28 09:52

Each to their own. But backseat passangers can see it and it is a huge plus. Also it increases the light that enters the cabin by a huge margin making it feel much less like a cave inside the car.

yetiflask 2025-07-28 14:32

Should've simply designed a new smaller car. Just how much money can they even save doing this?

moronmonday526 2025-07-28 18:47

This video led me to buy the Amazon-branded shades five years ago. I took them down once, put them back up, and never took them down again. They make a huge difference. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aC31gQQkZX8

blonded_olf 2025-07-30 03:17

Yeah it makes my car hotter in the summer, I am not a fan lol

Br3akabl3 2025-07-30 08:38

Yeah that’s the main downside. Tesla’s tint is also very light so it’s recommended to apply another tint film to help with the heat issue.

STUNNA_09 2025-07-30 14:48

Except destroying other EV competition

Qs9bxNKZ 2025-08-01 21:29

That’s about the going price for a Tesla Model S and Cybertruck windshield btw.

MaterialRip7555 2025-08-23 21:47

Yes I’m adding retractable sun shades to my model 3 21 to reduce the heat

Exciting-Sir2671 2025-10-03 13:00
