Leaving ModelY out in driveway for extended period

mangotrades | 2025-07-13 21:17 | 18 views

Pretty much the title. We will be traveling for summer for few weeks. I was wondering if I can leave our MY out in the driveway. Temps usually reach upwards of 100F. TIA! Update 9/14 - Thanks for all the info. I ended up leaving the car out for almost 8 weeks. As some had suggested, I disabled the cabin heat protection. I had charged the car to 95% before I left. When I came back, it was at 72%.

It a car......Just park it and plug it in to a charger and fly to your vacation... If you have windshield cover, use it.

So long as you have cabin overheat protection on and plugged in. Should be good. I left my car for a week at LAX in the EV charging lot and I came back to it 100% fine.

TaylarRoids 2025-07-13 23:57

Cabin overheat protection only stays on for 12 hours after you exit the vehicle.

Itzu 2025-07-13 23:59

It should be fine

savedatheist 2025-07-14 00:00

Are you parked at work for longer than 12 hours?

Delzak421 2025-07-14 00:07

Just make sure it’s plugged in. If it dies and kills the smaller battery it’s a pain in the ass

What did people do with their cars when going on vacation before Teslas? 🤣

kwadra 2025-07-14 00:31

It’s well over 100 just in my garage right now. Windshield screen is a must and just be mindful what you keep stored in the car can handle it.

Jay_Beckstead 2025-07-14 00:36

Just trickle charge from a 110 volt outlet.

EljayDude 2025-07-14 00:38

If we're talking a couple months best practice would be to get somebody to roll it forward a couple feet to avoid flat spots on the tires like half way through. But if it's a pain don't bother.. Turn off sentry mode and let it sleep. Last time I went on a multi week trip it lost almost no power while it was asleep, they've really gotten that down to almost nothing, it was like a couple percent.

I live in Central Texas where we regularly get above 100 and I leave mine parked outside. It does just fine.

General-Tennis5877 2025-07-14 00:52

No problem at all. 100F is common for a lot of places in the summer. I do that when I take long summer vacation. I don't park MY in the garage any more after the 2nd year:) I don't turn on cabin overheat protection as others said, because I don't find it useful and it consumes energy. (Do not worry about battery, it will be be protected regardless of cabin overheat protection). I also don't plug in. I estimate MY loses roughly 1% of charge every day.

Comfortable_Key9695 2025-07-14 01:16

My wife parks her car outside. We're 100-115f for about 3 months, during the summer. We've never had any issues. We also do not use cabin overheat protection. Last summer we went to Europe for a month. I set the charge limit to 50% and the charging amperage to 8A.

A few days ago the temperature in my Y reached above 135f when outside temperature was 95f. I usually have overheat protection turned on but forgot on this day. A big help is to cover the windshield.

AMGSiR 2025-07-14 01:25

Yeah if it’s plugged in, everything is fine.

ArtOfWarfare 2025-07-14 01:37

100F is nothing. The car should last at least 2 months before there’s any issues.

bigpoppa611 2025-07-14 02:42

These cars are tested in the harshest conditions. It’ll be fine

mangotrades 2025-07-14 03:01

thanks! that's a good idea.

thrftshxp 2025-07-14 14:55

Make sure to turn off "Cabin Overheat Protection". I left my model 3 outside in 100F+ weather for a few days, the AC kept turning on to keep up, AC eventually died, then the low-voltage battery died.

raygundan 2025-07-17 16:54

I've parked outside for more than a week in Phoenix several times. Yes, it gets very hot in the car. It's fine.

raygundan 2025-07-17 16:57

I'm not sure what the highest I've ever seen is, but 165F+ is pretty common for me here. I don't bother with cabin overheat protection because with temperatures like this, the fan-only setting doesn't achieve much and the HVAC setting uses a ton of energy-- 10-20% per day.

Qs9bxNKZ 2025-08-01 21:33

Vent the rear windows. That just means opening them up about a crack on both sides. You don’t want the overheat protection running all day and you may want to consider bugs/rain. If that’s an issue, leave the trunk popped open a bit instead.

windshield and roof glass covers are a dime a dozen on amazon. get those to minimize the heat exposure to components like your dash and screen. this is something i do to any car not just my tesla. prolonged heat and UV exposure like that is not good for the plastics and electronics. its an easy and relatively cheap way to keep your interior in good condition for several years. other than that theres no real precautions. if you really wanna get nitpicky you should park it at around 50% as its in its most balanaced chemical state which reduces the degredation effect. turn sentry mode off otherwise youll come home to 20% or less charge. or leave it plugged in , in a 110 outlet and leave sentry mode on.
