Hopefully Tesla take the Chinese approach to technology sharing and use this CATL line to figure out how it works and then make their own version and rubber stamp copies of it all over the place.

It’s crazy to me we have humans smart enough to design and build all this shit and then similar humans who bring all 13 members of their family to Costco and just stop dead center in the middle of walking lanes to block everything with zero idea what a fucking obstruction their group is

agolubev 2025-06-29 19:00

I think I know where you spent your sunday morning 😂

GoneSilent 2025-06-29 19:02

The cell designs are not the same.

gman1216 2025-06-29 19:03

Same, just got back from Costco and I hate everyone. Never again on Sunday.

rawasubas 2025-06-29 19:53

Will these also be in cylindrical form?

FrostyD7 2025-06-29 20:00

General rule of thumb is if they are handing out samples, you came at a bad time.

420Deez 2025-06-29 20:05

usually if u go up to the dude running it and give him a lil “aye lemme just get that whole bag u got there 😜” theyll just give you more

sherlocknoir 2025-06-29 20:06

Helluva point.

Apparently Friday evening, right around 5p is like the perfect time to go. I've never seen the place so dead.

adrr 2025-06-29 20:27

Sodium batteries for low end and solid state for high end. LFP was a great transition battery since it didn’t use cobalt and durable enough to charge to 100% over over

pinpinbo 2025-06-29 20:28

Politicians like dumb population tho… seems like this is by design.

Quin1617 2025-06-29 20:31

Prototypes are just that, whether it’s commercially viable or able to be easily mass produced is another story. We also had [these](https://www.insidehook.com/culture/stretchable-batteries-that-never-need-charging) [prototypes](https://www.zdnet.com/article/engineering-breakthrough-may-bring-batteries-that-never-need-replacing/) nearly a decade ago. Yet all of my devices with batteries will still need a new one in 2-3 years.

Hadleys158 2025-06-29 20:48

This looks like it is a separate factory to the Gigafactory 1? Does anyone know why they didn't expand the footprint like they were originally planning to of Gigafactory ?

bme11 2025-06-29 20:51

Bro Sam’s club is 100000% worst. Carts everywhere.

Ape_Escape_Economy 2025-06-29 20:56

Friday evening or we don’t go. I simply can’t.

Then-Blueberry-6679 2025-06-29 21:15

Excellent point! Have you noticed people have “rear radar.” I will be walking behind someone older and slower and if I try to pass the left, somehow they sense this and they veer off to the left. If I try to pass to the right they veer off to the right. r/blackmagicfuckery

Where is this plant?

stpaulgym 2025-06-29 21:26

Looking at some of the clips, you can see the white SEPA material being used. It probably means it's the flat stacked batteries instead of the cylinder ones -LG Energy battery Engineer-

North America. The clues were in the title.

Smartnership 2025-06-29 21:56

> Tesla is working with CATL to establish a lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery production plant in Sparks, Nevada. According to multiple reports, Tesla plans to purchase idle equipment from CATL, the world’s largest battery manufacturer, to set up a facility focused on producing LFP batteries for its Megapack energy storage product. >Tesla will fully own and operate the plant, covering 100% of the costs, with CATL’s involvement limited to supplying machinery and assisting with initial setup. The facility is expected to have an initial capacity of approximately 10 gigawatt-hours (GWh), with potential for expansion based on project success and supply chain development.

stanley_fatmax 2025-06-29 22:17

At their existing site in Sparks, Nevada

VirtualLife76 2025-06-29 22:33

>Just in time for solid state batteries to make them obsolete in 3 years.  First time I heard that was about 30 years ago.

bonerb0ys 2025-06-29 22:36

Welcome to Costco. I love you.

Suitable_Switch5242 2025-06-29 22:43

This is supposedly for Megapack stationary storage. Where $/kWh is more important than energy density or extreme rapid charging speed.

Ok-Revolution-9823 2025-06-29 22:54

Simply put: CATL is licensing the technology to Tesla.

rustybeancake 2025-06-30 00:06

Thanks!

SolenoidSoldier 2025-06-30 00:08

Scalability is going to make them incredibly difficult, not to mention LFP batteries are cheaper and will still have their place for stationary use (i.e. house batteries).

NerdyGuy117 2025-06-30 01:46

Very cool!

azsheepdog 2025-06-30 02:13

LFP batteries are not meant to be state of the art. They have longer charge cycles, made from cheaper materials and used in things like stationary storage or shorter range vehicles. They also dont conflict minerals like cobalt. Currently pretty much all LFP batteries come from china which now becomes a tariff import and supply line issue relying on china. Think power walls, mega packs for grid storage.

Axle-f 2025-06-30 02:22

My in-laws have no idea about human traffic and I’m constantly reminding them to move aside

jg3hot 2025-06-30 02:23

Good point. LFPs will have uses outside of cars even if other better battery tech becomes the clear choice for vehicles.

cac2573 2025-06-30 02:34

That’s the law of large numbers at play

noodlesofdoom 2025-06-30 02:53

Damn didn't know they had a plant there (Sparks, Nevada). Anyone know why they selected that location? I'm thinking cheap real estate and labor but can't think of anything else.

DrXaos 2025-06-30 02:55

Lots of the secrets is in the processing steps and chemistry and not the machinery.

shellacr 2025-06-30 03:07

Sure, but there’s nothing “Chinese” about it. That’s how capitalism is supposed to work.

Lanky-Slice-9122 2025-06-30 03:45

I mean they bought the equipment in China from a Chinese company so something is Chinese about it

shellacr 2025-06-30 03:52

I think you missed OP’s point. They’re calling the method of getting tech knowledge from another company Chinese, not the equipment itself, which is obviously from China.

grecy 2025-06-30 04:58

Does that mean they are only for energy storage projects, or can they go in vehicles too?

stpaulgym 2025-06-30 05:05

They can and are used for EVs, yes.

BeGood981 2025-06-30 06:16

So what goes around comes around? About fking time😂

goobervision 2025-06-30 07:44

The name.

Lordeisenfaust 2025-06-30 08:22

Energy is fucking cheap in Nevada, also subsidiary for getting a plant there.

FlatronEZ 2025-06-30 08:29

Those are mostly not the same people, all they share is being the same biological species.

Thick_Strain1946 2025-06-30 09:29

It was sick to be apart of this milestone 🔥.

popornrm 2025-06-30 09:33

Yell excuse me at them or tell them to stop blocking the aisle with their family. People are disrespectful and inconsiderate asshats because we no longer call them out and shame them into behaving.

popornrm 2025-06-30 09:36

The trick is to have one person stand in line with one or two quick grab items while the second person brings the rest of the stuff or uses a second cart to bus everything to them or just swap carts.

Due-Freedom-5968 2025-06-30 09:50

I don’t think I am actually, but don’t let me stop the faux offence from brewing.

Perfect_Cost_8847 2025-06-30 10:04

More than 10% of the population has an IQ under 85. These people are too dumb to peel potatoes for the army. They can’t even work a cash register at McDonald’s. That’s a lot of people.

schumacherfm 2025-06-30 11:20

Same on the other site of the pond :-(

Mrthundercleese4 2025-06-30 11:28

Its going to be great when I can get them for my lawnmoer, and other cordless tools! I got a LFP for the power wheels its great and half the price!

Mrthundercleese4 2025-06-30 11:29

Tesla has some great ideas, if they could detach Elon from the process it would be even better!

carfo 2025-06-30 12:51

they're aware...they just don't care about anyone but themselves

wooder321 2025-06-30 13:23

Like district 9 prawns… a few smart engineers and tons of drones.

barvazduck 2025-06-30 14:44

Copying isn't related to capitalism more than any other economic system.

shellacr 2025-06-30 14:54

I’d argue it is because capitalism especially puts an emphasis on competition. Certainly it happens in other systems though.

Clout12x 2025-06-30 16:42

sounds like someone had a less than stellar costco run today

Ajedi32 2025-06-30 19:45

> The facility is expected to have an initial capacity of approximately 10 gigawatt-hours (GWh) Gigawatt hours per what? Per day? Per year? This facility *is* manufacturing batteries, right? Not just housing them? Once again the media seems to have no clue how basic electrical units work.

Snoo-88611 2025-06-30 20:30

Yes, and that is VERY good as CATL has arguably the best LFP batter tech and process in the world.

Snoo-88611 2025-06-30 20:32

Tesla has a flat pack LFP batteries in Model 3. I don't think they will go cylindrical, as that is a alternate tech node. to integrate it with LFP will take time, and have limited benefit.

rawasubas 2025-06-30 20:36

Isnt that because the LFP batteries are the Blade batteries made by BYD? So maybe the battery in the US would be different. Just wondering.

Smartnership 2025-06-30 20:45

Hey, that LLM is not even a year old. I bet you weren't that literate at 12 months.

Mechanical-Warfare 2025-06-30 20:47

That’s personal.

Raven-734 2025-06-30 22:26

My in-laws know nothing about human trafficking either, it’s really difficult to explain to them.

Old_Scene_4259 2025-07-01 00:04

Nice!

Tudz 2025-07-01 00:59

Wow if only my LFP worked

superpanjy 2025-07-01 02:25

Reno

intrepidpursuit 2025-07-01 09:02

No. IP theft is not how capitalism is supposed to work.

vomitrock5000 2025-07-01 14:05

Same with walking in the city. That same family of 13 are all holding hands having a conversation taking up the whole sidewalk.

spinwizard69 2025-07-01 17:53

I have to wonder how long it will take Tesla to come up with its own chemistry / process. I'm sure this is in part to bootstrap their own LFP process. Beyond that I'm not even sure the long term goal is just Megapacks. LFP batteries would be great in CyberCabs, Robovans, and even a short range Semi. In each case the extended durability leads to even better economics. So MegaPacks to start but I can see the expansion into other areas.

spinwizard69 2025-07-01 17:54

Actually that isn't even clear.

spinwizard69 2025-07-01 17:57

Yes, you can't have a battery factory without "Sparks".

shellacr 2025-07-01 18:48

What you call “IP theft” is part and parcel of capitalism. Android did with ios, and ios does it with Android. THe US [did a ton of it](https://www.history.com/articles/industrial-revolution-spies-europe) during its own industrialization. Without it you more easily fall into monopoly capitalism, which in an uncompetitive situation that does not benefit society. Arguably we are currently living in monopoly capitalism anyhow, but it would be much worse without what you like to call “IP theft”.

Scoutron 2025-07-01 19:28

Guess I’m gonna have to get ready to trade the 2024 in 😣

Independent_Tip_2091 2025-07-01 20:31

They do. And the technology they are licensing to Tesla is not their latest generation.

harda_toenail 2025-07-01 21:56

Switched to Sam’s because I can’t stand the customers inside Costco. Bunch of pretentious asshats. Sam’s is way more chill.

debruyneonetouch 2025-07-01 23:15

Its annual capacity [https://driveteslacanada.ca/news/tesla-first-look-lfp-battery-plant-nevada/](https://driveteslacanada.ca/news/tesla-first-look-lfp-battery-plant-nevada/) The batteries are not for cars and capacity may not readily translate, but for fun., Model 3 LFP RWD battery is 60 kW-h. 10 GW-h capacity is enough for 160,000 Model 3 RWD.

Ok-Revolution-9823 2025-07-01 23:16

Just ask ChatGPT or Gronk and you’ll get all the references you need.

SBELL29910 2025-07-02 16:18

Just returned from a week vacation in Montana. EXACTLY the same experience in the airports! Especially true for ATL. But the small airport in Bozeman was nearly as bad.

wooder321 2025-07-03 09:08

Good to hear that the CATL CEO put Elon in his place and Elon actually listened and accepted that they have the best manufacturing tech for batteries.

gundam00meister 2025-07-06 08:03

Does that mean the cheaper standard range will come back and qualify for the 7500 incentive again?

GrootPilot 2025-07-22 16:14

Does that include, like, toddlers? Or is that adult population?

Perfect_Cost_8847 2025-07-22 16:33

Toddlers have the same IQ as adults. It’s just hard to measure it at that age. The estimate is from the bell curve, so it’s people of every age in roughly equal proportion.

Mysterious_Main8854 2025-08-26 15:25

Tesla needs other sources of phosphate for their plant to run smoothly. With the tariffs on China , a source of western phosphate will be needed. Check out this company $FRSFP on the OTCQX. (first phosphate). They recently achieved THE world’s purest igneous phosphate concentrates. https://investorstockpicks.com/the-new-gold-in-battery-materials-that-no-one-is-talking-about/
