Oh god

newcar20 2025-06-23 14:18

this is new? mine already routinely cleans the stupid cameras... on bright sunny days

bigpoppa611 2025-06-23 14:35

Look at all the water it used. Time to stock up

Derpymcderrp 2025-06-23 14:49

Right after a car wash Is ideal

ScottRoberts79 2025-06-23 15:01

I wish the car would do this when necessary in FSD supervised.

matthew19 2025-06-23 15:12

Yea it’s effectively doubling the wiper speed over the cameras. Pretty clever.

DavidBelgium 2025-06-23 15:15

It’s cool to see. Would be nice if they added that function like Mercedes has, where it slowly sprays fluid over the windscreen, so it has time to make the insects less sticky.

sp3085 2025-06-23 15:26

These cars need lidar

crazy_goat 2025-06-23 15:28

I don't think it would entirely fix the problem.  You'd need a lidar system that could almost entirely replace the cameras - which I would assume would create a training problem as they have very little lidar ground truth data

Puzzleheaded-Rush12 2025-06-23 15:35

Nope. Not needed at all.

Pavores 2025-06-23 15:47

Not sure this is new... FSD has always done great with wiping the camera portion of the windshield. It's the human viewed portion of the windshield it's terrible at. Edit: OK yeah I'm dumb, this is new behavior. Interesting!

jmpalermo 2025-06-23 15:54

I think the fact that the wipers are focusing on the camera area is new.

mulletstation 2025-06-23 15:56

Lidar has problems with certain weather as well

Do we really need *more* cars on the street with [LIDAR that burns camera sensors?](https://www.reddit.com/r/Volvo/comments/1ke98nv/never_film_the_new_ex90_because_you_will_break/)

echoingElephant 2025-06-23 16:15

It’s very heavy fog, but obviously lidar works much better for any given foggy conditions than cameras, since it creates its own light. It mainly loses spatial resolution because the heavier the fog, the stronger the scattering of the laser light.

psychoacer 2025-06-23 16:20

Does it have a slower setting? It would be nice if we can get a wipe every 5+ seconds for when it's a light mist outside

ArrogantSquirrelz 2025-06-23 17:25

Ok... Now make automatic wipers not suck on the rest of your cars. And stop making it switch to automatic while it does still suck.

ufbam 2025-06-23 17:32

In case you'd missed it, machine learning has allowed people to extract depth data from monocular video for at least a couple of years now. Lidar days are over.

mulletstation 2025-06-23 17:53

Lidar fails in high fog, but also importantly uneven fog. And anything with reflective surfaces such as mirrored buildings, glass at certain angles, puddles are certain angles, directional rain, basically situations where the refraction in the air becomes outside of a certain range

ChampionshipAgile263 2025-06-23 18:15

The wiper system is the biggest issue I have with the car

ProudHippo1608 2025-06-23 18:25

Can this be updated OTA?

4kVHS 2025-06-23 19:18

When necessary is the keyword. Just because the sun is setting doesn’t mean I need the wipers activated when my windshield is already clean. Sometimes the auto wipers make it worse!

JasonQG 2025-06-23 19:29

How is this the top comment? Are bots upvoting this?

Tupcek 2025-06-23 19:42

ironic, coming from DirtyTesla

jabroni4545 2025-06-23 20:43

Yes.

jagga_jasoos 2025-06-24 00:22

They should just have mini wipers only over camera.

kiefferbp 2025-06-24 01:07

What other car uses the windshield wipers in this fashion? Clearly you didn't watch the video.

wizkidweb 2025-06-24 02:53

The worst is when it does this *right after* I've washed the whole car.

Dr_Pippin 2025-06-24 13:22

Just go click on the link and watch the video. This is pretty unique.

Dr_Pippin 2025-06-24 13:23

That's pretty slick.

grmelacz 2025-06-24 20:25

See the (Beta) toggle label, right? /s

AnOoglyBoogly 2025-06-26 15:10

🥲 Can relate

garibaldiknows 2025-06-29 16:40

Automatic wipers have been significantly improved for a while now, at least that's my impression. Also people complain about it way less than they used to, so I would assume my observation is in line with others. The best way to tell if a problem has been fixed is seeing how many people complain about it. Phantom breaking, unprotected lefts, automatic wipers - they were all solved with a whimper, not a bang.

Oversoul91 2025-07-01 18:04

*swipe*

madaddyml 2025-09-14 19:00

What is robotaxi mode? Is it same as FSD ?
