[Just a trial. We're always exploring options. Supercharger cables will also have "Property of Tesla" engraved from our Buffalo NY factory, so recycling companies shouldn't accept them and notify us. It's a scalable, cost-effective solution that doesn't impact service operations & customer experience.](https://x.com/MdeZegher/status/1889790290036453422) [Image of the engraving on the copper wire](https://pbs.twimg.com/media/Gjnh5EobMAAuNbM?format=jpg&name=medium) This post is in response to another one from Drive Canada which talks about new anti-theft cables being rolled out to Superchargers. [BREAKING: Tesla has started installing new anti-theft devices on Supercharger cables. Called DyeDefender, these are stainless steel hose barriers filled with pressurized, blue-staining dye that explodes when someone attempts to cut the cable. Just like the same recycling depots shouldn't be buying dozens of cats from people who can't tell them where they're from? These places know what they're buying. I doubt this actually accomplishes anything.
This. Don't chase random junkies. Hit those making fortune buying stolen things.
Are people stealing supercharger cables?
Don't people usually sell these for scrap? I doubt those scrappers really care when they're the ones turning a profit
I read that in Germany they arrested cable thiefs because the cables had gps. That sound like a great solution
Yeah, it's been going on for years now though. Not new.
Yup, will do absolutely nothing.
Also has pressurized blue dye. So. Not pointless
The thieves might be annoyed being sprayed with blue dye.
The heavy duty cable and exploding dye should be enough. Engraving the copper wires seems like fluff and marketing.
If you’re at the point in life where you’re ripping copper wire out of charging stations in public you definitely don’t care about dye
They just need to leave the cable electrified all the time and enable/ disable charging from within the handle.
Years ago we had the problem in my country where people would steal everything metal they could, including manhole covers. It got solved overnight when law was passed that scrapyards will be crmininally liable for buying obviously stolen stuff.
not all scrapyards are boiling down the copper into ingots. if they get caught with stolen materials they are charged for theft, same as anything else you might procure illegally.
deterrent works no matter how tiny
That's probably just made the recyclers more profit. They'll just say if it's stamp Tesla they'll pay less for it. But they'll still buy it.
This. As soon as it's melted down, no more stamp.
Are they only taking cats? No dogs?
The companies buying "scrap" copper cable know it's hot, they don't care. However, this will be helpful for enforcement and "busting" this sort of stuff, since it will be obvious the cable is hot to law enforcement. So, most likely the scrappers will disassemble the copper as soon as possible.
That last link is a perfect example as to why I don’t just blindly share links, I go back to the original source, and then the source of that one, until I get the original content creator.
This one was tricky. The original post on X was recycled from Reddit, but the reply from Tesla was only on X So, the whole thing is just incestuous
Cats and puppies, not kittens or dogs
Yeah, I’m sure the engraving will stop nothing. Kinda like how engravings and even specific laws have sone so much to stop recyclers from buying catalytic converters or bronze manhole and water box covers…
Why is pressurized dye legal? It sounds like setting up booby traps against porch pirates and carjackers, which were advised not to do.
Booby traps tend to be illegal.
It’s not a booby trap if that’s just how it works. They could add a “Warning: Live Electrical” sticker like other public electrical infrastructure.
If you intentionally designed it to do that when it's not necessary or even helpful, then a judge would likely consider it a booby trap. And given that superchargers haven't done this up until now, it's pretty clearly not necessary or helpful.
Very necessary improvement. Gets the energy closer to the car faster. 😉
I strongly recommend not going to court if that's your best argument against a murder conviction.
Instead of chargers having cords that plug into the car, cars should have cords that plug into the charger. The charger cord would be detachable from the car, so in case you live in a bad neighborhood, you can take the cord in the house. As long as the house is secure, no charger cord theft. You would just have to remember to take the cord with you before you go. Use sticky notes if you have to.
Thanks for the advice. I guess I’ll have to stop heating up my doorknob and putting marbles and tacks in my entryway too. 😉
Found the thief
There's nothing illegal about booby traps as long as they aren't intended to injure someone.
You caught me blue handed
Doesn’t it take a bit of planning to steal the cables? Like you need to have tools that most people don’t? So… these are being stolen by enterprising criminals, not just someone looking to make a buck as quick as possible. And being covered in dye makes it easy for people to tell you did something you shouldn’t have.
This is done on L2 chargers in EU, but I do not believe this would be effective at all with DCFC as those cables are cooled because they get so hot. I would hate to see how they would design a removable cable that integrates with liquid cooling, sounds like a horrible mess.
Probably by using fitting similar to hydraulic couplers. [https://www.fastercouplings.com/hydraulic-quick-coupler](https://www.fastercouplings.com/hydraulic-quick-coupler)
The reason fast chargers have attached cords is because they are too heavy and don't bend very well.
There's a difference between knowing you're fencing stolen goods but having plausible deniability and having goods that are labelled as stolen in your possession. The crooks won't care, but the judge will be happy about a clear-cut case.
Someone comes up to a crack head and tells him "Here's tools...now go collect cables for me aned I'll give you some money" And that 'someone' may not be some higher form of criminal. It could just be some anti-EV oil-paid agitator.
Let's just say that if they did that they wouldn't go public about it...because you really want to follow the trail all the way to the one who buys it and not tip thieves off that there's something they need to look for/disable.
> Why is pressurized dye legal? Have you never bought clothes? Pressurized dye has been around for decades as an anti-theft.
Because carjackers are nice people that wouldn’t hesitate to hurt someone…
Easy trick. Same law should pass here. Makes a lot of sense.
So, the song “I am blue” is the song about a criminal? TIL

Ah, bringing politics into an automotive subreddit. This seems unwise
The cables at superchargers are liquid cooled. I don’t think it’s possible to just plug in your own cable unless it had valves and stuff to keep coolant from leaking.
chase both
