Nothing in here says that existing Tesla's with Matrix headlights will get it, only that the new Y's will. Not sure if there really is any technical reason the new Y would get approved in the US to do it and not the older vehicles but maybe they Matrix on the new Y are not exactly the same as the older headlights.
Fingers crossedd

After DOGE disbands the NHTSA for blocking adaptive headlights
[deleted]
I have hope, standards can definitely change.
My understanding is that all vehicles post 2023 have matrix headlights, so it should be possible. That said, matrix headlights come in different flavors. For Tesla, High-Res projector, which is used on MS, older M3s, and seemingly the new MY Juniper; and Low-Res reflector, which is used on M3 Highland (and existing MYs?). Regardless both are able to do adaptive headlights and there's drive videos out there showing it in action. If your car can spell out Tesla and whatnot with its headlights via lightshow there's a good indicator it is a projector headlight.
and 7 seater coming soon!
I have a uk (mic) 21 3. Adaptive works well. Does this mean the highland is worse?
Let’s hope so
Stay poor
Probably just another feature they’re holding back to sell launch editions. Teslas have had the necessary hardware for years
Of all things, you’d think DOGE would be “deleting” this kinda of stupid stuff
Not sure honestly. My anticipation is that in real world use they're not drastically different. You can see in this video (a year ago) in this M3 Highland they still perform very well [https://youtu.be/Z3bL0Xu2om0](https://youtu.be/Z3bL0Xu2om0) I am in the USA so I don't have much perspective here but you might though. We only see the "power" of adaptive/matrix headlights realistically currently during light shows on our Model S spelling out "Tesla"
The same people that are removing the US from international organizations?
Is this actually confirmed? I want to upgrade to the new one, but can't find it in my heart to go from 7 seats to 5...
Nah, 22 year old racists deleting aid to starving kids because of some dude on a Rogan podcast claimed USAID is basically the CIA (or some other half truth thing)
"Worse" is hard to answer in his context. Highland is lower resolution, but faster switching, which is what the US regulations require. More pixels allow for images, but it's unnecessary to be that granular for blocking light on an approaching car. There is talk that the US has or will align with EU rules. If that didn't happen, it's still up in the air whether the older "projector" will be fast enough.
I have matrix lights on my gen 2 rivian and they are my favorite thing about the rivian. I hope they retro actively allow equipped current model ys to use it
Hi all, I’ve paired about this many times… let me sum up. …The USA legalized the use of matrix headlight technology via FMVSS 108, it Rivian is the only one with them active right now on their latest hardware 2 Rivian R1S/T, because they designed the headlights with the USA restrictions in mind. Every Tesla since 2023 has had matrix headlights, but with the highland they went to a non-project lower resolution matrix headlight, hopefully with these new restrictions in mind as well. The new Juniper should have the same lights as the highland. CyberTruck is also confirmed to have the gen 2 non-projector matrix lights as well. There is speculation that the highland (and now Juniper) will be getting the functionality when it does come out as these headlights are newer hardware, so there is a higher chance they meet the requirements. As a result, there is a chance that first gen matrix headlights with the projectors will NOT be getting it because they are hardware limited and may not meet the FMVSS108 requirements. Oct. 26th 2024 Lars Moravy posted on X that they are “almost there”… I speculated we might get it as a part of the holiday update, man was I disappointed (but v13, weather radar, and supercharger status info made up for it very nicely!). At least for the Highlands and Junipers, they are currently limited by software, the hardware should be good, but may not be true for gen 1 matrix lights. TLDR; Do teslas have matrix headlights? YES, depending on the year of your car, design could be high-res projector or low res non-projector Will we be getting the full functionality? Hopefully sooner than later, but YES, although not everyone may be getting it
This exactly
Confirmed on Jay Leno's garage https://youtu.be/vQ6e4-1uuGA?si=aiKxSbro0T7778TF
I’ve both a 2023 and 2024 Model 3 here in the UK. The Highland headlights just aren’t as bright and you can notice the matrix effect happening around cars much better with the 2023 headlights. The one disappointment for me with the Highland is the step backwards on the headlights. They aren’t bad, they just are as great as the older cars.
why bother. i have a model Y. good car. no way i am buying another with HIM in charge
NHTSA is important, in spite of it’s faults
No, they can't meet the recently published US spec so they'll likely never get them. EU already has them. Highland will probably get them when Juniper and CT do.
I don't get it, my 2014 Explorer has adaptive high beams. It's this a canada thing?
I think the title meant to say the matrix headlights that turn off a portion of the light forming oncoming drivers.
Kind of sounds the same. As in, my high beams automatically turn to standard beams when an oncoming car is sensed. Cool anyways, I really like that feature and don't want to live without it much with my new Juniper.
Ur not getting it. Matrix headlights are more advanced than that. Instead of cycling between two modes, matrix headlights only block the part of the beam that would blind the oncoming driver while keeping high beams on the rest of the field.
Key part is only a portion of the high beams shut off, not shutting them off completely. Imagine your high beams are a projector and they stay completely on, except for that square right where the car in front of you is. [If you look at a Tesla lightshow demo, you see the high beams have a high enough resolution that they can even spell TESLA with each headlight.](https://i.ytimg.com/vi/IribtQMwHZU/hqdefault.jpg)
Ah, very cool!
They're had this for years
Pretty sure highland and old Model Y have different projectors, at least in Europe. https://youtu.be/beXcr3m4wCI Vs. https://youtu.be/Crm8PEG6pV0
I saw something similar on BMW….15 years ago.
OMG, Tesla’s been claiming that adaptive headlights are coming any day now to North America for the past 3 years. Why is this harder than FSD?
watch & listen to Lars on Jay leno.
It’s a legal thing, not a technical thing.
Do the pre-highland 3's have matrix activated in Europe or only the newer ones?
Thanks for sharing. We'll check with you prior to all future purchases.
Have it on our Rivian. It’s a great feature
Juniper got HD matrix still, it can spell “Tesla” in light shows while Highland can’t
Doesn’t look like it https://youtu.be/cs4HqYszEGA?si=CRPyuI72E7lkPvmL
you're right, thought it was the HD ones [https://pbs.twimg.com/media/GiMHUmgWcAA6Tth?format=jpg&name=small](https://pbs.twimg.com/media/GiMHUmgWcAA6Tth?format=jpg&name=small)
please do
Don’t forget to research other CEOs before you make any purchase. (They all suck)
They do, been active via software update for about a year.
Congrats?
It’s been overseas in Teslas for years, obviously it isn’t a limit of Teslas engineering, it’s the bass ackwards legislature in the US
Being in Norway I allready have the adaptive headlights on my 2022 Model 3. But Tesla dropped the ball on those, they are activating WAY too late when it is dusk or dawn (or dark), and the adaptive function does not work unless the Automatic Headlights function is turned on. It would be so good if I could choose when to activate the high beams, and keep the adaptive function active.
I've disassembled both of my Teslas and torched each part until it hath returned to earth wence it came. Tonight I shall be self-administering 50 lashes across thy back and the following day thy will begin a walk of shame.
European here. I'll trade you my matrix headlights for your FSD.
(-: FSD is very cool. It’s amazing technology. I’ve tried it several times through various one month rentals and free trials. But honestly, it’s not for me (or most people). The free Autopilot meets 90+% of my needs. I use it everyday for at least an hour or more.
If only Autopilot stayed on during lane changes
Posso estar atrasado e peço desculpa se não li bem os comments todos, mas o meu model Y de 2021 tem os faróis matrix com a opção de ativar o pixel dimming, apareceu penso que numa das primeiras updates de 2024. Funcionam super bem
