This is huge. I’d pay couple of grand for upgrading from my hw3 if I get FSD unsupervised with it

Salty_Leather42 2025-01-24 03:34

Let’s hope model 3 is next!  Edit : interesting how someone downvoted. I guess the message is not to hope :)

Shadow_Assailant 2025-01-24 03:38

I'm wondering how much the retrofit would cost for HW3 MY owners without FSD? Cheaper at that point to just buy FSD and get the free retrofit?

mth2 2025-01-24 03:41

Says it’s not for HW3 because it uses different connectors or something

MustangV6Premium 2025-01-24 03:42

I was excited to see if this was a HW3 -> HW4 retrofit. Turns out its HW4 -> HW4.1 retrofit -\_-

RealKent 2025-01-24 03:51

“…includes a connector for a front bumper camera, suggesting Tesla is preparing to introduce this feature for retrofitted vehicles.” Take my money!!

Radium 2025-01-24 03:55

Maybe for model y 5 person “cyber cab” to have retrofitted front camera. Tesla buys up all the trade in Y for cabs?

Neat_Reference7559 2025-01-24 03:59

There is no 4.1

ParksNet30 2025-01-24 04:00

Would love to retrofit the new suspension.

timotheusthegreat 2025-01-24 04:49

Bro front bumper cam with self cleaning = 4.1 maybe?

CarCooler 2025-01-24 05:01

Musk said that who've already bought FSD.

ElectricGlider 2025-01-24 05:11

What are you talking about? Why would you want a retrofit but not have FSD? That is putting the cart before the horse. There's a reason why Tesla would only do a retrofit if you have FSD since paying for FSD means having the hardware necessary to accomplish FSD no matter what hardware that is.

theBandicoot96 2025-01-24 05:27

Well you might want that if you want to subscribe alevery now and then for longer road trips maybe. But it does raise a good question... if they make the decision to retrofit for fsd owners, would you be able to opt to purchase it so you would be eligible for the upgrade? Or would they make you pay for the upgrade out of pocket?

Zealousideal_Aside96 2025-01-24 06:07

Just buy a new suspension

redditor_1886777 2025-01-24 06:14

I hope they retro fit front bumper camera and led lights that can be configured. I hate missing front camera.

KeyboardGunner 2025-01-24 06:45

There's a user on the r/TeslaModel3 sub who did just that. He bought new 2024+ Highland suspension parts from Tesla and they bolted right up to his old car. So hopefully it's also possible to do on the Y. I'll see if I can find the post. Edit: https://www.reddit.com/r/TeslaModel3/s/z1bWwokvZw

VergeSolitude1 2025-01-24 06:48

Ok. Then do it. It's not hard and there are already YouTube guides.

kobachi 2025-01-24 06:51

THERE ARE 4.1 LIGHTS!!!!

happymeal2 2025-01-24 06:54

I believe they recently changed language in what they’re selling with FSD for just this purpose. Now they call it “FSD Supervised” instead of just FSD. This might have been done so that there is no commitment to keep upgrading models that can’t support the latest and greatest especially if/when they hit unsupervised FSD.

ohyonghao 2025-01-24 07:02

For that extra deep flash

throwaway13630923 2025-01-24 07:05

Maybe if they do a retrofit in 10 years

Auxilae 2025-01-24 07:09

Wonder if they're also considering the HW4 Model 3 as well, seems odd to only have Model Y retrofits.

Roonil_-_Wazlib 2025-01-24 07:35

Oh man I sure hope someone tries this with the new Y into the current gen. Improved suspension is the only feature of the new one I really want on my current Y

Elluminated 2025-01-24 08:00

Probably for the much better cameras. The resolution is much better

Alienfreak 2025-01-24 08:15

Didn't you already pay for it by buying FSD? Elon is entitled to give you a free upgrade if needed. It did tell you that your car would get unsup.FSD after all...

Alienfreak 2025-01-24 08:17

How does anyone come to the conclusion that this is meant to upgrade anything? The new Model Y has an additional camera, so it needs hardware with a port for that. Its still the same car though, so volume space and connecting points will be the same. I would bet some beers on that just being the actual hardware from a Model Y LCI.

ReticlyPoetic 2025-01-24 08:45

Wait until HW6 cyber truck owners are going to be mad.

modgone 2025-01-24 09:03

So basically Y S and X have the front camera connector on the board which can be retrofitted. The new Model 3 doesn't have it on board and the camera can't be retrofitted. What a bummer

arithmetike 2025-01-24 10:04

This. It is probably for the refreshed Model Y and it also happens to be backwards compatible with the pre refresh Model Y. Tesla is advertising that the refreshed Model Y has better connectivity, which explains the integrated cellular radio.

HODL_or_D1E 2025-01-24 11:27

It's just a connector... easier to manufacture the board with it on there than to have a separate process for one without it.. all computers then go down the some production line

Nakatomi2010 2025-01-24 12:12

Checkpoint

deanylev 2025-01-24 12:51

It is not for the new Model Y, that is covered in the Tweet. It lacks the connectors for the second screen, in addition to some other stuff

IntelligentCompany83 2025-01-24 13:50

what makes me curious is if this further supports the reason for a hw3 to hw4 retrofit since the front bumper camera might actually be necessary

[deleted] 2025-01-24 14:24

[removed]

rsyed725 2025-01-24 15:25

I dont think the bumper camera will benefit FSD yet b/c it has not been trained to use it. However, I would love a front bumper camera on my 2023 Model Y because its really hard to see the front and navigate tight spaces.

jabroni4545 2025-01-24 15:33

Softer ride?

BuySellHoldFinance 2025-01-24 16:44

>I was excited to see if this was a HW3 -> HW4 retrofit. Turns out its HW4 -> HW4.1 retrofit -\_- HW3->HW4 wont happen because HW4 uses a chip that has higher TPD than HW3 cars can cool. HW3 cars will likely need to wait for a chip made using 7nm.

DwemerSteamPunk 2025-01-24 17:51

Yeah I wonder how much difference a 2024 Model Y would see in ride quality compared to the new? I hear the 2024 MY is better than before but I wonder how much more the new ones are

MustangV6Premium 2025-01-24 18:07

My thoughts exactly. It wont be the same exact chip hw4 uses. But it will probably be a much more efficient chip that offers the same performance as hw4 while consuming the same level of power as hw3

kconfire 2025-01-24 18:30

What a bumper…

theBandicoot96 2025-01-24 18:30

I don't think that ends up taking responsibility off of them to upgrade though... if you bought a car under the direction that you would eventually be able to subscribe and have it drive you "coast to coast" as they said, i think they will meet some trouble if they change that

happymeal2 2025-01-24 19:41

I think I was intending to mean that anyone who buys it after that change in wording doesn’t have to get upgraded to keep up necessarily. If it was bought before then they could be on the hook still.

shigydigy 2025-01-24 19:50

If only the finest engineers in the world had thought of that.

BlackGlenCoco 2025-01-24 19:58

So i bought a MY 2025 in Dec. is this for me?

theBandicoot96 2025-01-24 20:19

Yea I mean I guess we are yet to see how it will be handled. But I see a very good argument from those people that I bought the car on the basis that if I want, I can subscribe for a month and summon the car across the country.

JoeyDee86 2025-01-24 20:48

What’s your source on that? It’s still water cooled I thought. It would be madness if there’s THAT much of a difference…

Shadow_Assailant 2025-01-24 21:09

Probably not if it's a brand new MY. It should already have HW4. Look at the "Software" section of your car's settings on the main display. Below the VIN, you should see "Autopilot Computer," and it will say either FSD computer 3 or 4.

[deleted] 2025-01-24 21:55

Elon said they would do an upgrade because he knows by the time unsupervised is ready, there will barely be any HW3 vehicles left on the road, even less that are licensed for FSD.

Terrh 2025-01-24 22:13

Not the first time they've done that, all the way back to AP1.

Terrh 2025-01-24 22:14

They first made that claim with ap1 cars and it is beyond obvious that they aren't going to provide that functionality to them at this point.

theBandicoot96 2025-01-24 22:20

I dont remember the timing on when he made that statement, but anyone that bought a car that you have been able to subscribe to "FSD" at the time of ordering will have a good argument on why they need to be upgraded.

HeronOrganic3727 2025-01-24 22:36

There was that leak before the Model 3 refresh came out where it showed a front bumper camera, so it’s definitely possible

jrherita 2025-01-24 22:53

Hmm, according to wikipedia, Hardware 3 and 4 both are 300W, while HW5 goes to 800W. [https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tesla\_Autopilot\_hardware#Hardware\_5](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tesla_Autopilot_hardware#Hardware_5) (Also, HW4 is on a 7nm process already).

wbaccus 2025-01-24 23:23

That seems likely. Advancements in chipsets can overcome that issue for sure.

Terrh 2025-01-24 23:35

It was claimed (By tesla, in blog posts and videos, and in person at tesla showrooms) that "over the air updates" to cars with "autopilot" (this is before the "full self driving" existed) would allow you to summon your car from anywhere connected to the road system in north america within 2 years, and your car would figure out how to do it, leave so that it met you when you got to your destination, and charge itself on the way, all without a person in the car.

ChunkyThePotato 2025-01-25 00:01

I believe HW4 is 7nm. But yeah, it'll probably have to wait for the next process shrink before it can happen (if a retrofit even turns out to be necessary).

Salty_Leather42 2025-01-25 00:44

That’s what I’m hoping. I’m guessing they didn’t want to Osborn the Y sales with a bumper camera on the 3 ahead of the Y . Fingers crossed for HW3 upgrade .

theBandicoot96 2025-01-25 03:51

Yea I mean that's deceptive as well, but when you have people that bought when fsd did exist, I think they have a good case to say they should be able to be upgraded

omfg100 2025-01-25 07:14

But it isn't just a chip replacement? Isn't the whole motherboard replaced as well

rao-blackwell-ized 2025-01-25 08:48

I have a 2024 with the so-called "comfort suspension" that arrived in late '22 or '23 and it still leaves much to be desired IMHO. I bought the Unplugged Performance "luxury" shocks but have not installed yet. Also curious how the new refresh with the Frequency Selective Damping would compare.

rao-blackwell-ized 2025-01-25 08:49

I'd be curious about this too. I bought the "luxury" shocks from Unplugged Performance but haven't installed yet.

DwemerSteamPunk 2025-01-25 13:17

Fwiw in my opinion it's a pretty good ride. But I come from Hondas and Mazdas so this was the most expensive car I ever owned by a longshot. I find it interesting a lot of people "downgrade" from BMW & Mercedes etc and then criticize the ride quality. To me it's as good as any car I've driven but who knows maybe I'm just missing out and don't even know it

1960vegan 2025-01-25 13:34

My concern is that such chip development will be a much lower priority for Tesla, and may actually take a successful class action lawsuit to put in motion. That would take forever. There's part of me that thinks I should have traded in for a HW4 car during one of the two periods when Tesla offered the ability to transfer FSD from your existing car, but the timing wasn't right for me. However, I'd be very surprised if they don't offer that again to goose sales at some point(s).

[deleted] 2025-01-25 14:19

The Highland is currently discounted 4000 euros in Europe. If you consider that the Juniper is launching in little more than a month, that COULD mean that Tesla has something in store for the Model 3 as well? 3 and Y haven’t looked alike for a while, and maybe Tesla wants to reinforce the family feeling…?

SirCaptainReynolds 2025-01-25 18:08

Please, please, please!!!

rao-blackwell-ized 2025-01-25 18:22

My Chevrolet Silverado truck was smoother than this. But then of course some prefer that tighter, sportier feel and handling. It's highly subjective at the end of the day.

[deleted] 2025-01-25 19:18

How would it not be able to cool it? Are you saying the flow rate or coolant is different?

AJHenderson 2025-01-26 14:00

Because it has the USB headers for the pre refresh and lacks the second video output.

SoakieJohnson 2025-01-26 21:20

My computer was just replaced last week because of the hardware 4 bug that bricked FSD and it was replaced with this part number. So now how do I plug in a webcams and tape it to the bumper? 😂

VideoGameJumanji 2025-01-28 03:15

Its very clear that all it takes is them to engineer an optimized retrofit thats all.  Its just out of their way to do given everything they juggle so itll probably wont happen until HW5 or MCU3

AdministrationTime80 2025-02-03 17:28

My car is going into the shop tomorrow for a replacement Hw4 computer and the model number in my estimate is the same as the "reloaded" model.

LOGIC-PREVAILS 2025-05-02 03:14

They offering fsd transfers right now.
