As a current model Y owner, I’m not at all persuaded to upgrade, but I think the car will be very mass market friendly.
Finally confirms front bumper camera with washer nozzle!!
Wish he drove it
I'm starting to dig it. Love the rear light design. The front light could be a bit more aggressive.
I wanted him to drive it to go through how much the suspension got better
didn't know that rear light bar was actually a reflected light
whats with the Xpeng look?
Not just Xpeng, Tesla made a car with a generic light bar in the front so it couldn't be distinguished from European or Chinese EV's. All new cars have had this kind of light bar for the last couple of years. Cars are like clothing companies, if a feature is fashionable then everyone has to have it
Yep, ever since Cybertruck reveal it's been standard

Another one hour video that could have been 10 mins. But anyways, it really does look like an incremental update like the 3 but when you tack on the loss of rebates and increased price in Canada, I don’t see this enticing many upgrades. Problem is, the highland upgrades were exciting at the time but now, they’re boring so tacking them onto the Y is kinda boring. I also hate the front look. Big miss from Tesla imo.
Nah, way earlier. Audi and Porsche have had the light bar at the rear for ages and some have been doing it for a while for headlights too.
Its 95% the same as the current model. Minor improvements. I compare this to a iPhone 15 to 16 as far as improvements go. Some ways better other ways subjectively worse design wise
I hope some under the hood improvements are included for larger future upgrades, like a larger battery capacity, 48/800 V architecture, etc.
Do you have a time stamp?
Need rear washer nozzle though

Part of the problem is the gap between original M3 and MY already existed so it was a big step when M3 Highland came out, whereas MY getting similar updates is relatively unimpressive. It really seems odd to me that in the Chinese market they keep rolling out cars without charging/battery improvements given the competition. Is there a longevity concern that's causing them to hold back? I know the efficiency argument is still there (140 miles for 15 mins of charging is "good enough") but it's hard to see Zeekr running 250 kw at 80% when you know MY will be at 50 kw by then. Imagine matching that capability and being able to say 250 miles in 10 min.
As always, great review from OSR. I want this car now..... but can't afford it.
Just the front and the rear being completely new, along with a completely new interior is already more than your 5% difference. New glass all around, new suspension, added camera, new sound system, chassis stiffened, newer wifi, newer BT, new UWB, ... No, it's not 95% the same.
Curious about that rear badging. It looks sort of like the ludicrous badge on the m3p but this isn't a performance trim AFAIK. I know the initial run in the US will have the acceleration boost but does that make this a semi-perf?
They did move it way high up to reduce the amount of dirt accumulating on it.

Why didn’t they try for a range increase ?

New wash nozzle with a camera
It’s a launch edition badge, comes with FSD, acceleration boost and some other launch edition branding (indoor sills, puddle lights etc)
Because none of those fancy charging cars are selling the volume Tesla is, they also are boutique for the moment, none of them have had a 10 year life to see if they even hold up long term. China also has a ton less standards to worry about so many of those companies are doing things that won't fly in other countries. It's a shiny toy or feature that they will only sell a few of right now. Tesla has always looked for the sweet spot and aimed to get max value out for less spend. They may not have the fastest charging or the absolute most efficient etc. but when you put all the sweet spots together, you get the worlds best car that sells in the millions. Most of the Chinese companies are not doing that with EVs. Think about all factors, battery degredation, battery chemistry, cost of materials, manufacturing process etc. most of these Chinese companies aren't even profitable but still choose to do the fancy batteries. Tesla is different in that regard.
A facelift, standard in the car industry.
I actually prefer the look of the old one more. I'm not sure why but I don't think this design will age well either.
old one felt like something iconically tesla (albeit they stole alot of the look from porsche) the new one looks like they went full on committed to the chinese automotive beauty standards.
It looks like they moved the actual headlights lower, the lightbar is just running lights just like the Cybertruck. I hope that the lighting ability isn't compromised.
A big miss! I hope that they will be able to address that in a future change and not have to wait for a completely new refresh.
wonder how it will work covered in snow
We own an old Y and new 3. The 3 is def a big upgrade so if the new Y is equally better then we are getting the new Y also. Imo it's exactly what is needed but it's hard to match the high demand of the old Y as it was filling a large demand gap that now is mostly filled.
After my 7th first look, the whole design is really growing on my a lot.
It raises the cost significantly. 🫤 It’s a big trade off.
Most not sees are fine with current range
FWIW, very brief mention of the Frequency Selective Damping suspension tech [here at 21:05](https://youtu.be/WLMalLy_3JU?si=_VgxKRNuCc9XFE2P&t=1265) in the Jay Leno video on the Model 3 Highland, likely directly from KONI: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZqzgHLm6mSc](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZqzgHLm6mSc)
Any predictions when the less expensive trims would be available? How long did model 3 require ordering "launch" version?
I heard it gets more range bc of improvements in aerodynamics in a different video.
Yep, I recently returned my 2021 MYLR and test drove the new M3’s. For me the ride quality was improved. Both the LRRD and LRAWD were much more quiet, and smooth. There is a notch in the door sill that seems to tighten the door sill 🤷🏼♂️. Stereo sounded good on both. Build quality definitely bumped up a few notches. I’m on scooter and Uber for the next 4-6 months until the Juniper arrives to south Florida (I want the ventilated vets for the climate here).
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) and the federal government both test headlights. There you go, you're concerns are alleviated.
The Cybertruck uses lower headlights, which I appreciate as a car driver, but from videos I’ve seen it appears to have worse lighting capabilities than other trucks. https://youtu.be/Q-6PjMHfjBg&t=214s Presumably it underwent the same testing.
Ah I see, I wonder if worse capability just means they bring it back to normal, because cars and trucks are pretty crazy bright now.
The body is the same and the battery is the same, so without changing those two variables the range isn’t going to get better while adding more equipment (aka weight)
They could have changed the electronics to allow faster charging speeds and or changed the battery. In either case reports are out that they are producing a Juniper model with a 450 mile range so maybe they are addressing this complaint. Let’s hope.
the light bar is not the headlight. those are lower down and will be less prone to snow build up
I'm taking the rear lights
where are you taking them?
The rear lights are shown to the world as a reflection off of that material. How is this going to work when the material is covered in snow?
in the linked video they actually go over that. the horizontal taillight isn’t the brake light, the side curved lights are. so no issue
how do you change the gears on the new model Y Launch ?????
Until Tesla gives it's models a proper driver oriented instrument cluster I'll look elsewhere (which will probably be never).
