In case it's not clear why I linked the design studio, there's a banner at the top of the page for each of the models mentioning the price increase. Model 3 seems to be the outlier, with ["up to $9000"](https://www.tesla.com/en_ca/model3/design#overview). It's unclear which models are affected, but I'd guess performance is $9000 and the others might be $4000 like all the other models.

Krolitian 2025-01-23 15:01

I see the new trade war has begun as prices are going up. Can't wait to see how unaffordable Tesla's become when the whole goal was to make them cheaper...

Jerrippy 2025-01-23 15:03

Just some recovery after canceling EV credit… but soon they will stabilize and go down again due to new tech a cheaper solutions 🍀📈

Currency exchange will do that.

BigfatDan1 2025-01-23 15:10

In the UK there is a luxury car tax coming in on all cars over £40k. If the model 3 goes up, all of Teslas vehicles will be over the threshold. This will reduce sales even further.

justinreddit1 2025-01-23 15:14

Increased value for existing owners and hopefully stops the massive depreciation.

Dr_Pippin 2025-01-23 15:17

Pretty sure Tesla knows that.

[deleted] 2025-01-23 15:21

Maybe, but not as much as you think it will.

virussc 2025-01-23 15:25

How is it recovery? They were paid by government credit the amount you saved. This is just them increasing prices? Its even more expensive to the consumer now since you lose the credit and the price goes up.

LennytheGoodson 2025-01-23 15:26

Yeah the exchange rate has gone up a good bit in the last year… the math adds up

-SetsunaFSeiei- 2025-01-23 15:27

40k seem pretty… low?

k_buz 2025-01-23 15:29

JustTryinToLearn 2025-01-23 15:36

Yeah but increased demand for used cars will cause used car prices to increase. Everything is going to be more expensive

grizzly_teddy 2025-01-23 15:42

This has nothing to do with tariffs or a trade war. New model will be cheaper. EDIT: I'm being downvoted for calling out a claim that has no basis? There are no new tariffs. This makes no sense.

switch8000 2025-01-23 15:45

Who cares? You bought the car to use it.

farfromelite 2025-01-23 16:32

Apart from non-doms & corporations.

StierMarket 2025-01-23 16:32

It might be depending on the composition of the car like maybe a greater percentage of the cost of a model three is related to the battery or similarly with steel. Or maybe simply it’s just a supply demand dynamic. Maybe they already have a lot of demand for the model three in the US and they don’t need to sell it to Canadians. There’s a lot of reasons that could be driving that decision.

Unicycldev 2025-01-23 16:36

Canada stopped being part of the UK quite some time ago, yo.

yetiflask 2025-01-23 16:43

Terrible move. Other brands haven't increased prices like this despite CAD dropping.

mdwstoned 2025-01-23 16:53

You and I have a different definition of what luxury is. Personally, any car over $40,000 to me seems expensive and luxurious. I'm fine with taxing them that way. Other people will definitely disagree with me and that's okay. It's a conversation.

justinreddit1 2025-01-23 18:40

It doesn’t bother me really but anyone would be lying if they have a product that has a chance to slow down depreciation, would take it, even if intentions are to keep long term like I am. Did I understand I bought a depreciating product? Of course. But still nice.

hughmungouschungus 2025-01-23 18:41

Yeah and the Reddit gamers know everything and can 10x every business they just don't feel like it

nemohaus 2025-01-23 18:42

Bad move. Won’t sell then they will have to drop the prices. Do not buy Tesla, Canadians.

ReticlyPoetic 2025-01-23 18:58

lanthrax 2025-01-23 19:21

SlicedBreadBeast 2025-01-23 19:44

What basis do you have to say it’s NOT related to the tariff news? It’s the clear thing that’s going on causing pricing to adjust. Saying don’t worry another cheap model is coming is a little bit gratuitous when they’re literally raising prices. You say not tariffs, it’s because they’re bringing in a cheaper model? By comparison to newly inflated prices?… 7 days? The tariffs start February 1st, not a big stretch, and the market reacts to news before it happens, always. Gonna go with that unless you have new news.

RedElmo65 2025-01-23 19:44

Insurance on these cars is crazy expensive, I don’t know how people justify it. I was interested until I contacted my insurance company and found out it would be 3x more expensive to drive one.. I drive a competitors EV because of the insurance cost. I really liked the model s and y and you can buy them for a pretty good bargain used… it just doesn’t make sense! Rivian R2 I’m thinking so it’ll be a bit before it comes out. Might switch back to ICE until then.

R-EDDIT 2025-01-24 01:24

Big corporations use long term currency exchange contracts to hedge against fluctuations in the market rates. So while it would seem that everyone should be affected by the same market changes, there are variances in when it hits them based on when contracts expire, what hedges they have in place, etc. Tesla could have made a wrong bet, for example. I don't know if FX exposure gets reported (10k, etc).

iamthesam2 2025-01-24 01:35

literally any other ev seems like a fine choice right now

LiftedWanderer 2025-01-24 01:41

Niiice, dont really have the money for a new car but I would go Rivian or LUCID 100% im extremely interested to see how rivian pans out over the next several years

Newflyer3 2025-01-24 01:48

I'm curious to see how the regular consumer reacts. If resale is 'up' due to price increases at the new level, I'm sure as shit not jumping in right away knowing they could crater at the same time. That 2023 price drop did a number on the perception of resale values for EVs and Teslas as a whole

Unlucky-Way-4407 2025-01-24 01:53

amoral_ponder 2025-01-24 08:38

When Pierre forms a government in a few months, he may get rid of Federal tax creds. You can expect sales to drop 50%.

lukaskywalker 2025-01-24 09:24

Wonder if this will heilp sales. How could he not see this coming. Those in mein camp think this will be a hit to his master plan.

_casshern_ 2025-01-24 12:07

That’s pretty low. Even a civic in the UK is in the £30Ks. Add a couple of options and you have a “luxury car”. At least in Canada the luxury tax starts at $100K. Whether you like the tax or not is a separate discussion for another sub, but at least the tax is not set up in a way to cover most cars…

Maybe the tarrifs placed on Chinese made cars but where did anyone suggest Canada was placing tarrifs on US made EVs? Seems like the burden of proof is on you, the person making the claim.

Nakatomi2010 2025-01-24 16:15

The Teslas sold in Canada are, sometimes, manufactured at the China plant.

fredean01 2025-01-24 16:24

Not anymore as far as I am aware after the Canadian gov put tarrifs in place last year.

Fidget11 2025-01-24 16:24

need? I mean it has some nice elements but need is a strong word

Fidget11 2025-01-24 16:27

because in Europe sales have absolutely cratered from some of the reports I have seen.

Fidget11 2025-01-24 16:37

Really? for me the difference between a model Y and an ioniq5 or ID4 is $100 and there is no real difference between them and a new ICE vehicle like a Tiguan. Perhaps you should be looking for a different insurance company.

Fidget11 2025-01-24 16:38

They are already gone. The federal 5K is over and wont be back any time soon. In some ways I feel like this price increase is to cover for the inevitable drop in sales that the loss of the credit created. Demand is softer than Elon and Tesla would like to admit. Raising prices means he has something to blame for the weaker demand (its the higher prices) rather than admit that EV's without the subsidy aren't as popular as he would like them to be.

crimxona 2025-01-24 16:43

It's already gone since a week or two ago, out of funds  Even if it was in place Tesla already raised their prices above the MSRP cap

PM_ME_UR_DECOLLETAGE 2025-01-24 16:43

Lol that's $1,200 a year. That is a huge amount.

Fidget11 2025-01-24 17:09

No, I was talking about it on a yearly price for my wife and I with all the options and maximum coverage in Alberta. Model Y LR AWD - 1450 per year Ioniq5 ultimate package - 1355 per year ID4. Pro S AWD - 1365 per year Tiguan - 1340 per year. Also we are talking about insuring a brand new \~60K vehicle here so if you cant afford insurance I would question buying the car in the first place.

Weak-Imagination9363 2025-01-24 17:17

All good, sentiment has changed here the last little bit. Definitely won’t be buying another Tesla after Musks antics. We were going to be on our 4th one to the point where we didn’t even cross shop. Gotta see what’s out there these days.

dotaforeveryoung 2025-01-24 17:35

Our government's best move is to stop that stupid 100% tax on Chinese EVs and bring BYD and Xiaomi in.

PM_ME_UR_DECOLLETAGE 2025-01-24 17:53

Your post which I replied to said the difference was $100/month. This is highly location dependent as well. Here in Ontario it used to be that cheap to insure my Tesla's but it's easily an extra thousand per year now. The insurance I was paying when I bought the car isn't what it is today. All insurance companies here charge ridiculous amounts for teslas now. It's one of the reason I'm looking to get rid one of them this year. I'm far from the only one experiencing this as well.

Fidget11 2025-01-24 18:29

it was a slip when I was writing it and didn't realize that I had left it saying per month. I edited it to be more clear. I agree it's very location dependent, and also dependent on who the driver is amongst many other factors. the point though is that it doesn't inherently have to be such a huge difference.

amoral_ponder 2025-01-24 22:00

I used the business tax credit personally. It's tax deductible up to $60K but cars which cost more are allowed. Just the part above that threshold is not deductible. M3 LR fit into perfectly @ $58.5K when I got it with inventory discount.

amoral_ponder 2025-01-24 22:01

This is completely illogical. Oh shit, things are bad.. yeah that's right, let's make them twice as bad? LOL.

Fidget11 2025-01-24 22:12

no its because Elon needs something to blame for when sales drop. Sales decline and Elon gets to blame the federal government instead of his own greed in raising prices.

VideoGameJumanji 2025-01-24 23:49

You still arent making any sense, you are acting like nobody can see him raising the prices lmao

Fidget11 2025-01-25 00:10

It doesn't matter what we see, it matters that he can muddy the water so its hard to discern what is weakened demand due to a price increase and what is weak demand due to the loss of incentives and a societal level lack of desire for electric cars at full price. Its not like people dont have alternatives and there are plenty of very capable ICE cars out there, with the pending loss of electric vehicle mandates in both Canada and the US he needs to find reasons besides them hitting closer to the natural ceiling of buyers and a price hike gives him that cover. Investors who cannot tell what caused the decline in sales wont have as much worry when they can easily blame the softer sales on just the price hikes. They would have a lot more questions if its shown to be that actual desire for an electric car at full price (when no subsidies are there to boost sales) is actually lower than they have been led to believe and that they may be hitting close to a ceiling of adoption where growth will slow dramatically. Muddy the water and now it's hard for someone to say its actually a systemic issue with demand instead of an issue caused by a price hike.

amoral_ponder 2025-01-25 00:42

It's very likely the election will be called once the parliament prorogation ends March 24.

I think your statement is really wrong about those with right leaning views and EVs..... I believe, like most I know, that we should have choice, not have one thing or another forced upon us.
