Do you think they'll develop a retrofit that would allow the Model Ys from 2020-2024 leverage the functionality?

Matt_NZ 2025-01-21 00:34

They didn’t for older 3, S & X so, no, that’s very unlikely for the Y

Insulated_ 2025-01-21 01:37

Still waiting on that Tesla android watch app 😭

drknight09 2025-01-21 01:45

FINALLYYY!!!!!

goodvibezone 2025-01-21 01:47

I'll probably get the update when I get FSD 13 on my 2020 model 3...so another 6 months?

[deleted] 2025-01-21 01:52

Only for M3 Highland and newer (and older S/X which had it already). Would love a Tesla app for Android Wear, though.

QuantumProtector 2025-01-21 03:16

Nah, your model three won’t support it anyways

PunkAintDead 2025-01-21 03:24

For reals

b787guy 2025-01-21 03:51

What about getting sentry clips on mobile?

Thankfully Tessie has one and I like Tessie

SteelByWood 2025-01-21 05:00

This!

BitofaGreyArea 2025-01-21 05:58

I wish Model Ys were capable of the cool stuff like auto trunk opening, etc.

hi_internet_friend 2025-01-21 06:44

"DRIVE electric for tesla" is good too. No subscription, but also does less than Tessie

Substantial-Pipe-425 2025-01-21 08:16

Oh my im looking forward to this one!

Unfortunately, only some phones from Samsung and Google support UWB, very few others. Hopefully this will make them add support in future phones.

[deleted] 2025-01-21 14:59

Or they can pull a Michael Knight and you just call the car by whatever name you gave it like "\[car name\] I’m ready" into the watch.

BikebutnotBeast 2025-01-21 15:35

Agreed, it would require MCU hardware and b-pillar antenna replacement, so basically the cost to retrofit would be +$6k aka buy a new car. Currently there's zero incentive for tesla to consider retrofit post-sale until maybe 2028-2029 because right now it's a demand lever to buy new. Hell even the Intel atoms are still rocking new updates and features.

judge2020 2025-01-21 15:51

Those are the cars that have UWB radios for this feature, so it’s not just gate keeping (in case anyone thought that)

Bladehawk1 2025-01-21 19:29

Still not here yet.

xQcKx 2025-01-21 19:51

Could this possible fix where our model Y can be unlocked from like 30 ft away?

Nakatomi2010 2025-01-21 21:32

Stopped by here.

modeless 2025-01-21 22:05

I've had that UWB antenna sitting in my Pixel phones for so many years now and I haven't been able to use it a single time for anything. Looking forward to actually using it for something finally!

caveme 2025-01-21 23:29

Finally, the rumors that precedes the announcement that precedes the promised date that precedes the delayed future release date that precedes the press release stating that everyone understood it wrong that precedes the lawsuit that precedes...

Lance-pg 2025-01-21 23:31

Can't complain about them jumping the gun announcements. Elon musk and his big mouth got me a free steering wheel upgrade. He at one point said that all steering wheels made after a particular date would have a central horn and to surprise of absolutely no one he lied. When they came out with a steering wheel with a central horn eye contacted their legal department sent them his tweet and they immediately sent out someone with a new wheel (this was after I was told no by the service department).

Lance-pg 2025-01-21 23:50

It's more the fact that I threatened to take them to small claims court and since they had published this they had very little chance of winning. It probably cost them $300 to install the $1,000 wheel (retail). And it would have been simply annoying to them to have to pay me and then have me give them the money back just so they could do what they should have done in the first place.

dr-dro 2025-01-22 00:11

Probably going to subscription soon, though, since Tesla is now charging devs for API use. Just happened to Bolt for Tesla, an excellent Tasker interaction plugin, and I recently saw similar warnings on other 3p Wear apps.

Plastic-Fox1188 2025-01-22 05:53

About fucking time

lotrl0tr 2025-01-22 12:59

Why they should? Engineering time needed to plan and adapt the current solution for the previous hw generation, manufacturing >>>> revenue from clients buying the retrofit. Ok I understand clients might want it and I'm on the same boat but any company thinks about revenue before all the other things, as it should. Their strategy is even pushing the FSD hw upgrade for 2021 models by super optimizing/downsizing current models in order to avoid it

Old-Faithlessness462 2025-01-22 13:41

Because customers would pay to add the module to the vehicle to add the functionality. It's either going to be a add-on kind of like the home link module. Or we will eventually get it once hardware 3 is extinct and we have to upgrade.

lotrl0tr 2025-01-22 15:06

Some will buy it ofc, I'm not saying they won't. From a business perspective (their), if engineering, resources, manufacturing costs >>>> possible revenue from clients buying the upgrade, then it is not worth for them. Their main revenue comes from selling cars and in future opening their system to other possible customers, not from retrofits. It's a money return based decision.

An optional one - you can still use it with just the BLE functionality. For me, that's all I need so I'm happy staying with it.

Emperor_Neo_ 2025-01-28 13:13

Did anyone get this to work yet? I don't get the option to upgrade the key. Side note: my phone is new and I just added it as a key.

Luke_starkiller34 2025-02-04 04:49

I just downloaded the update, but don't see the option (Pixel 9 pro), went to Tesla app>controls but do not see a setting for "locks" there. Anyone know where this setting might be?

Delicious_Suspect_72 2025-02-05 14:02

Same. Pixel 7 Pro, software on both car and app updated to latest. Not even a Phone key update on app is showing

Luke_starkiller34 2025-02-05 15:02

I read somewhere the car needs 2025.2 in order to get it for Android

Delicious_Suspect_72 2025-02-05 16:07

I have it

Luke_starkiller34 2025-02-05 16:45

P7P doesn't have UWB Edit: Nevermind, I'm a liar. Did you enable UWB?

Delicious_Suspect_72 2025-02-05 16:53

Yes, enabled it. And also app permissions for nearby devices.

[deleted] 2025-02-12 14:32

Latest versions of software on Tesla and phone and Tesla app, pixel 8 pro uwb enabled, remove and added phone key, enabled uwb on phone, enabled handsfree trunk on Tesla. Nothing happens... No upgrade option on phone key, not sure what to try next..

freme 2025-02-12 15:29

P7Pro and doesnt Work for me :/

Creative-Ad1507 2025-02-13 02:18

Same here. P6pro with a model Highland. All on latest updates. Uwb enabled and in car setting enabled. But does not work.

Ti-64 2025-02-17 10:17

Same for 7pro, do you get a solution?

Ornery-Lion4202 2025-02-20 21:37

It also doesn't work on Motorola 50 Edge Ultra with UWB. UWB is enabled in settings  function is enabled in Model X I re-added phone key in car and still it doesn't open trunk or frunk

wen87n 2025-02-23 05:06

My Pixel 7 Pro doesn't work; does yours work?

modeless 2025-02-23 05:35

It's not rolled out yet, is it? Also my Model 3 is too old to have UWB. I'm getting a new Y soon but I don't have it yet.

Pxicopato 2025-02-25 10:07

I cant get mine to work. My Pixel supports UWB, and I have the option to open the trunk by proximity enabled in the car but when I get close, nothing happens. What am I missing? :S

Pxicopato 2025-02-25 10:14

same here with pixel 7 pro :S

Pxicopato 2025-02-25 10:18

I have a Pixel 7 Pro with UWB enable and the car's latest update, but the hands-free trunk still won't work. Very frustrating...

Pxicopato 2025-02-25 10:20

Same here with a P7Pro :S

Grand_Event916 2025-02-25 16:30

I have talk with tesla and google support. I have a Pixel 7Pro with UWB. But the Frunk und Trunk from my Model S Plaid do not open with the new update. I will report about news.

SupermanVaderX 2025-02-26 01:25

ditto, pixel 7 pro, 2024 model 3 and no phone key upgrade showing...Tesla service looking into it...they just called me and kept going on about it being for iPhones and I kept reminding them that my car just got the update...waiting again to hear back from them otherwise i'm booked in at the service centre in 3 weeks time.

heretowatchpeopledie 2025-02-26 02:36

Do you think it has anything to do with the part of the article that says it hasn't been released yet?

Pxicopato 2025-02-26 11:46

Keep us posted please

SupermanVaderX 2025-02-27 02:14

[https://flic.kr/p/2qP1N3V](https://flic.kr/p/2qP1N3V) got this reply from Tesla service after that phone call... Devices seemingly need "background UWB ranging" which the Pixel 6 Pro, Pixel 7 Pro and Pixel Fold don't have support for. I would have expected Tesla to explain this better as it took me awhile to even find this in the manual too and to be more upfront about this requirement instead of getting our hopes up. [https://flic.kr/p/2qP2We4](https://flic.kr/p/2qP2We4) screenshot from the link Tesla provided on the Android page. Kinda bummed out about this tbh.

SupermanVaderX 2025-02-27 02:18

I got the update that said it had hands free trunk for android, 2025.2.6.2... devices need to have support for "background UWB ranging" ... Found it in the manual eventually but doesn't seem well advertised or known since the Tesla service had to research it for awhile before answering me... [https://flic.kr/p/2qP1N3V](https://flic.kr/p/2qP1N3V)

Pxicopato 2025-02-27 08:40

Well that settles it. I'm a bit disappointed, to be honest. I was really hoping for more, but it seems like this is just Tesla being tesla I guess .... :S

EntertainerPlus3984 2025-02-28 17:08

Pixel 7 pro unfortunately does not have background ranging support which is needed for this feature to work. https://developer.android.com/develop/connectivity/uwb#uwb-enabled_mobile_devices

Luke_starkiller34 2025-03-05 03:40

Has anyone in this thread been able to get it to work with an android supported phone? I have the latest app update on my pixel 9 pro, model Y with 2025.2.8 installed (release notes in the car don't mention this feature, but all other sources say it's there). No option on my phone to upgrade the key; no setting in the "lock" setting for hands free trunk. Edit: didn't realize model Y doesn't support uwb (stupid).

AmbitionHonest7734 2025-03-07 17:45

Does UWB replace Bluetooth or do you have to use both?

arnst 2025-03-07 21:43

It's not very clear. I tested by disabling BT on my S25+ leaving UWB as the only option and in the app it'll ask to enable BT to enable phone key...so I guess both.

mantoz77 2025-03-09 22:48

It seems something related to "Background UWB ranging". Do you have all the latest releases/updates from Tesla & from Motorola? I am interested in that smartphone, but if it doesn't work with Tesla not going to buy it!

Severecleer 2025-03-10 18:44

Pixel 7 pro unfortunately does not have background ranging support which is needed for this feature to work. https://developer.android.com/develop/connectivity/uwb#uwb-enabled_mobile_devices

Delicious_Suspect_72 2025-03-10 18:46

Thanks! Just wanted to find what the "problem" was. Hoping for a workaround, if the phone hardware should support.

Middle-Froyo4337 2025-03-16 11:53

Seeing all the genuine questions here regarding getting the trunk to open with Android phones, I'd like to share the link to an useful video that I found . It demonstrates how the Tesla feature works successfully with a Pixel 8 Pro: https://youtu.be/vcGQCjTM1IQ

[deleted] 2025-03-25 00:22

Love this feature, I just stop groceries in hands Android phone on belt in front of my X's frunk/trunk and in 3s beep beep beep then they open .

Apprehensive-Cod-500 2025-04-03 14:36

Attention! With software update 2025.4.8 it stopped working on my S25 (M3HL)

Icy_Slice 2025-04-14 13:03

What android phone do you have? I'm having a hard time getting this to work on my Samsung s25 Ultra.

Icy_Slice 2025-04-14 13:05

I have an S25 Ultra and can't seem to get hands free trunk to work. Does your app or car show anything to indicate you have UWB setup? The UWB toggle is on on my phone, but it just isn't working...

arnst 2025-04-14 13:10

No nothing indicates that UWB is being used. The only time anything changed was when I had to setupmy phone key after the update and there was a prompt indicating enhanced phone key.
