From the article: Tesla’s highly anticipated Model Y “Juniper” refresh made a big debut in China. Officially unveiled on January 10, the new version of the electric SUV was able to secure 50,000 orders within 24 hours, according to reports from China. While not official figures, the data comes from prominent Chinese auto bloggers covering the launch of the new Model Y. One of those bloggers Zhang San Jiao Xing Jian Zhe, reported the 50,000 order count, while Pang Hu Shawn, another influential blogger, confirmed that single stores were seeing over 100 orders each. (via [CarNewsChina](https://carnewschina.com/2025/01/13/new-tesla-model-y-juniper-received-50000-orders-on-launch-day-source-says/)) A Tesla store salesperson added further weight to these claims, noting that their location received nearly 300 orders on the launch day alone. Screenshots from a WeChat Tesla salesperson group also showed dozens of screenshots of order screens for the new Model Y.
I can only imagine the Chinese have their own version of the 500 “Buy now or wait for Juniper” Reddit threads.
Potential first time EV buyer here. Do we know what improvements/ new features the refresh has?
- new light bar front and back - front bumper camera - sound proofing glass all around the car - automatic folding and rising backseats - new steering wheel (still has a blinker stalk) - new center console (same/similar as the model 3) - i think a new suspension - maybe some improvements we currently dont know about (internals and so on)
Maybe it’s just me but I think the new Model Y refresh looks very Chinese design inspired because that design is specifically targeted for the Asia pacific market. I think, although not likely, it’s possible that North America could have a different design? Since it still hasn’t released yet here. The legacy 3/Y had pretty much all the same parts other than the actual body because I think back then the vehicle hadn’t been profitable yet. But now that it is, maybe it’s a chance for Tesla to do something different in terms of the design for the North American market. Maybe adding in new/different parts into their supply chain for different target markets may not be a problem for them anymore. Probably won’t happen but I wouldn’t completely rule it out.
50K influencers
Selfishly I hope that’s true. But also, I don’t see why a company with factories on different continents, Shouldn’t optimize their design for each intended market.

Other Chinese EVs apparently have the similar front lightbar style aesthetic. https://www.reddit.com/r/TeslaLounge/s/qjAo0Irrm8

I was thinking of being a first time EV buyer sometime in the near future. And was liking how this car sounded. I saw someone say the price conversion was 75k us. Is that likely to be the price over here? Or is this a normal pricing scheme for releases over seas? Since the current model y is way less…
Tesla has started capitalizing on early demand by having a very high initial price with “Launch Edition/Founders Edition”
I see. How long until they put out a not over priced edition usually?
slight efficiency bump
Likely the refresh will be the same price as the current Y. (new model 3 didn’t increase in price at all despite tons of new features/improvements)
That’s good to know. Thanks for the response!
cybertruck they did it when the pre orders ran out. Highland Model 3 they launched the $42.5k model that qualifies for the tax credit, and then inventory discounted it down to $38K a couple months later.
You can't pretend that the best selling car in the world is being propped up by influencers in any significant way.
Interesting idea, and one can always hope. But based on Tesla’s ‘the factory is the product’ operation and the fact that the Cybertruck as a similar light bar I’m not holding my breath.
Is the cybertruck Chinese inspired too then?
Yeah, this style overhaul is designed entirely with the Chinese market in mind, which is by far Tesla's most competitive market. And you know what, it will probably work. In the west they don't even need to try, legacy auto still struggles with range, price, charging speed, and software, so it's a much less competitive market back home and you can make more money on margins with "premium" vehicle branding anyway.
I don’t think they would spend the money on an alternate NA specific design. If they chose not to release the Juniper exactly as it’s been shown for the Asian market, they would just continue building the exact same pre-refresh Model Y for the NA market.
Chances of Model Ys having a different look in AMER are between 0% and none. Personally I like the lights. They may be inspired by Chinese cars and they are not perfect, but I think it’s still an improvement over the old headlights.
Mate, this is Reddit. People are happy pretending to just about anything other than reality haha.
I am really interested in how the sound proof glass works in the new Model Y. One of my biggest complain is the cabin noise when the speed is above 60 mph.
I would say partially mainly because Cybertruck’s exterior is so unique with it’s shape. But I still feel like the lightbar aesthetic is something Chinese vehicles have been using for a while even before Cybertruck came out.
I feel like I see other cars in America with a similar design too though so why is it “inspired by Chinese EVs” instead of just inspired by a new trend in car design broadly?
What about the "Launch Series" that they're doing with the Model Y? Like has Tesla increased prices by a decent amount for that? Or is it mainly cool extra additions you get with the car if you order first and not wait?
Is 50k supposed to be a lot? Seems relatively minor for a country with an adult population of 1 billion
It’ll also come with auto-shift, a game changer where it detects which direction you want to shift before you do it. You can always override it on the screen but in my experience it’s pretty rare I want to do something different
I’m looking forward to the performance version when it eventually gets released
Never thought I’d be jealous of the Chinese, yet here we are
First time i'm hearing about the automatic rising back seats. Thats cool
I don’t think they would go through the hassle of making a separate version for the NA market but when I saw the photos, I did agree that I thought it looked a ton like a Chinese-inspired version with the rear light bar. I do like the looks of it more than the current one
The Australian price on website now starts at 68770 AUD, which translates to 42350 USD All options is translated to 55350 USD
is there any competition with same price/power/range ? i dont care if it's a SUV or sedan
How about rivian then?
The slight upgrade my euro model 3 got just recently makes parallel parking a breeze, you just turn the wheel and it does the shifting, it’s never been wrong yet, super neat
You can see them in action on the Tesla model y page for China or Australia
I’d rather have this Chinese inspired Tesla than the ugly North American ones. I honestly can’t believe the old designs for the model 3 and y lasted this long. It was honestly one of the things holding me back from buying. Its such an ugly front. Reminds me of those beetle cars.
It's definitely subjective and I can see it that way as well. My interpretation is that the western manufacturers popularized the design trend and this particular design of the model Y refresh resonates more with current Chinese EV design aesthetics/principles as seen in the picture in the link above.
I would say the same thing. Although Western manufacturers may have popularized the trend, the lightbar design could be seen as common design aesthetic that is frequently implemented in contemporary Chinese EVs.
Don’t tell Reddit good news about Tesla 🤣
Yes, and worth noting that the Aussie price includes the 10% GST (sales tax). So take 10% off if you want the equivalent “before taxes” US price.
Almost like it was solely designed for the Chinese market.
I think so! Especially considering Tesla’s total annual China sales in 2024 was 657,000 vehicles
我做了一件事
657,000÷12=54,750
Onvo L60 still a better buy

-.- lol jk
I did a thing
Whether we like it or not, the Chinese know how to design nice looking cars (BYD anyone?). With the absence of BYD in North America I’ll take anything that remotely looks like their cars over here.
This is a pretty good and thurough review: [https://x.com/techAU/status/1877675856908386496](https://x.com/techAU/status/1877675856908386496) edit: worth noting the 16 speakers are only for the LR version, the base version has fewer speakers and not sure if/how it's improved over the current one.
all the reviews of the refreshed Model 3, which got the same soundproof glass, are overwhelmingly positive. significant noise reduction
The launch edition in China is around $1500 more expensive than the outgoing models but it comes with options that are actually worth more than the price increase (like larger tires and a couple other things). So it's actually an even better deal. Should be the same in the US.
> a game changer You and I have vastly different definitions of "game changer". Autopilot was a game changer. Auto-shift is a footnote.
>Launch Series >We're familiar with the Cybertruck Foundation Series, but now we've got a new limited spec with the New Model Y, known as the 'Launch Series'. >Tesla doesn't say how many units or how long this will be available for, but you should know it's not an option, all of the first set of 2025 Model Ys will include it, which may account for A$3,000+ of the price tag increase. >For the money, **you get to chose from all 5 paint options at no additional price.** When we consider the Ultra Red paint was a A$2,600 option, combined with **acceleration boost,** makes the price tag look more inviting, assuming you were already chasing those upgrades. >There's also **20” Helix 2.0 wheels included as standard,** while the previous 20" Induction wheels were priced as a A$2,400 option. This means we're now totalling up to A$8,000 in bonuses as part of the Launch Series ($3k + A$2.6k + A$2.4k). >Along with these items, you'll also get exclusive **Launch Series badging on the rear liftgate, puddle lamps, doorsill plates and more**. source: [https://x.com/techAU/status/1877675856908386496](https://x.com/techAU/status/1877675856908386496) Note: The reference currency in that article is in Australian Dollars, not American Dollars.
Thanks for all that! 🙏 Tesla China also shows a Launch Series but their paint costs extra money. It looks like theirs is the extra badging, "Launch" branding, some vegan material, and Acceleration Boost. I'm curious about the price differences in China for new vs old (MSRP). I know they have a bunch of incentives for old Y vehicles in inventory though.
Cybertruck is very much china cyberpunk futuristic designed, they just need to get it approved to sell there
In china? Absolutely
EU, any model to recommend?
Just wait for the US site lol I'll be in line
Everyone is calling it Chinese inspired because it's released in China first. 😂 no one ever said the model 3 refresh was Chinese inspired
Plastic shit mobile
Ever wonder will post launch Y will look different? Something like Toyota done with cruisers
Which... Could still happen.
I prefer Porsche styling vs BYD, but to each their own.
Also the led bar seen in the m3 refresh
Tell me when Porsche are selling electric cars for 20k us and we can talk
Here you [go!](https://www.carsized.com/en/cars/compare/tesla-model-3-2017-sedan-vs-porsche-cayman-2016-coupe/front/)
Are there any sites or accounts on X that post now in stock updates for the US Juniper release? I want to secure one as soon as possible
Yeah, there will be a NA special snowflake version, one to cater for those on earth and another for those living on planet america to accomodate for the different climates, languages and gravity. I would think it would be pretty strange for Tesla to not acknowledge that there is America, and then there is earth, two very important markets. We know theyve launched the Model Y for every country on planet earth, but planet america is still waiting, fingers crossed you guys.
The speakers is the only reason why I might not buy a tesla. I want the base model with the proper speakers. I dont want to spend another 20-30% extra for 1.5s faster acceleration, non-LFP 80% Battery that has the same range as the base and temu badges glued on, just to get actual good quality speakers.
Increase is not $3000 lol, its $7000, for puddle lights and a badge, atleast on the RWD.
Australia is $7000 more expensive for RWD, free paint and wheels, both of which, i dont want.
rip. That just means more of a delay until the regular versions come out.
Yeah exactly. By which time the Australian dollar will keep falling and it might be the new standard price. no way of knowing. I also i assume the US hasnt launched, because elon wanted to make a big deal about it and hes not sure whats happening with tax credits for tesla.
Yeah I'm in the US and just waiting. This whole thing is a shit show. If tax credit somehow does go away, then I'm prob not gonna be buying the car. If there's any time before it ends and the new Y still takes forever, then I might just end up buying a Model 3 LR AWD.
Are ventilated and heated seats throughout, or similar to the 3 with ventilated/heated in the front and heated only in the back?
Front facing camera may very well be for low clearance detection or something the main front camera couldn’t detect. If Tesla introduced a brand new part, it better be for a very good reason. Only time will tell!
Well its interesting, In the US the tesla is \[TAX CREDIT\] more expensive, \~$7500?, however you do produce them domestically too, so theyre not coming from the same factory.
Worth noting that BYD’s styling is done by the same guy who designed Alfa Romeo’s, Audi’s, and Lamborghini’s [source](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wolfgang_Egger)
I think it’s for improving FSD performance
Possible, but highly unlikely. The Model Y is a global platform just like the 3 and they’re not going to build a localized version of the old car.
Basically refreshed interior not exterior?
For Asia actually, it was also launched in Singapore and Malaysia, I’m Singaporean and considering very seriously
There are some Korean and German cars with lightbars too fwiw.
And these 50k orders were within 24h
Probably only ventilated in the front like the highland m3
https://preview.redd.it/fb7pwlw2n2de1.png?width=676&format=png&auto=webp&s=f9a165ee448fe327e1f28a5d3324c2d773613780 Its amazing good for Tesla MIC
It was launched in Thailand as well.
Canadians need to figure out currency conversion…those ¥ numbers are way off
And how many orders were canceled or delayed to book/rebook the refresh? 🧐
I was wondering this too but isn't this design of Juniper already starting production in Europe too?
Same, just waiting for the performance. Really tempted to get AWD LR Launch tho. 4.3s 0-60mph
In what way?
Saw one today on the road. Looked really good.
