The Tesla model Y looks much better in video then it does in photos

Perhaps you feel this way because they've modified the car to appear sleeker in this version. No Tesla logo, plates, or sensors.

PM_ME_YOUR_DANKNESS 2025-01-11 18:58

Why don’t these promo videos have the logo in it? Serious question

sl33pytesla 2025-01-11 19:19

The general bloated shape of the model y is the ugliest part of the car. It needs harder lines. Teslas will never win any design awards

HIGH_PRESSURE_TOILET 2025-01-11 19:22

The Chinese version is mandated by law to have the logo but the Japan, Australia, HK etc versions do not have the logo. https://preview.redd.it/459oaf9w0fce1.jpeg?width=1280&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=5f9e81453ebac73b4334dd55839948467c547eb1

StraightEstate 2025-01-11 19:29

Yeah I love this look!

Aqua_Puddles 2025-01-11 19:32

I love my 24 M3P's looks. I also think it's hilarious that people find the interior to be ugly because of it's minimalist design. Personally speaking, I don't want all these little details, I just want a clean look and a few bold touches, so it's perfect for me. That being said, I was never a big fan of the Y because of the proportions. It looks like a bloated car. I do like the redesign's look a lot more, because the hard lines make it feel less bloated, but they should have carried it a bit more throughout the rear of the car.

PM_ME_YOUR_DANKNESS 2025-01-11 19:36

I genuinely appreciate small ‘fun facts’ like this thanks for the info

[deleted] 2025-01-11 19:40

I've always thought the Model Y looks way better than the X. That thing is ugly as sin.

psaux_grep 2025-01-11 19:48

Considering Elon/Tesla public notoriety it might be beneficial for sales right now 🫣

iTurbo6 2025-01-11 19:53

Maybe it’s the front logo but something about it reminds me of the EV mustang thing

[deleted] 2025-01-11 19:54

When I see these posts of design this design that…literally design is subjective. Let it ride and see how it does in sales. I distinctly remember how “everyone” hated all the Tesla model designs back in the day. Hmmm.

tashtibet 2025-01-11 20:08

I am ready.

HellsNels 2025-01-11 20:10

I genuinely believe outside of this country, no one gives a shit about Elon and his antics when considering car buying. I would be hard pressed to think a Chinese consumer will give a second thought to buying a Tesla vs. domestic brands due to the CEO instead of price, performance, features.

maxstryker 2025-01-11 20:10

I cordially invite you to the BMW sub where every new design is proclaimed to be the death of the brand bought by fakers.

Cantthinkofaname282 2025-01-11 20:11

Why? Chinese cars look too similar?

matthew19 2025-01-11 20:17

It’s because there is no front emblem in the video. I think it feels more balanced without it.

SakamotoTRX 2025-01-11 20:18

I think it looks great - I'd say like legit 90% of the hate Tesla's get nowadays are politically driven cuz of Elon, but I work in the car space and constantly travel to talk with car companies around the world and think Tesla is doing a great job!

thiagogaith 2025-01-11 20:18

And fake lights?

VeryRealHuman23 2025-01-11 20:29

It’s almost certainly this. Elon has lost me as well but I love my car and this Y looks good imo.

lilleulv 2025-01-11 20:29

His meddling in politics in several European countries recently have really soured quite a lot of people on him here too.

katherinesilens 2025-01-11 20:36

Police cam auto-identification machine vision models probably train on and look for the badge.

farfromelite 2025-01-11 20:39

I also think that. I've got a painting from a little known Austrian landscape artist. Adolf something. Really nice colours, but I don't really appreciate his politics.

TheSlackJaw 2025-01-11 20:40

Maybe that's true in China, but in Europe, people are definitely put off by Musk

TheSlackJaw 2025-01-11 20:41

Fabergé egg

MasterPh0 2025-01-11 20:49

Yep. When entering freeways and highways there are cameras to track cars.

Shaper_pmp 2025-01-11 20:50

A [majority of people in the UK disapprove](https://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/elon-musk-nigel-farage-keir-starmer-opinium-prime-minister-b2677987.html) of him, with his approvers barely in double digits.

say592 2025-01-11 20:50

The Western world generally dislikes him. Liberals see him as obnoxious and illiberal, socialist know he is a billionaire, and conservatives dislike EVs and deny claimate change. The company will never completely remove his stank, but we would be so much better off if he wasn't CEO.

MayorCrab 2025-01-11 20:58

It looks like a Kia

ctzn4 2025-01-11 21:06

I don't get the hate for the E60 generation 5 series, but I understand how the E65 gen 7 series was divisive. The last gen F chassis cars were classy and stately, and I literally thought the F20 328i was a 5 series the first time I saw it. Recent years though? Not so much. They keep pumping out the most heinous things ever, with the beaver teeth M3 and the pig-nosed XM and another pig-nosed G70 7 series. Taste is subjective, but good designs can be distinguished from filth.

[deleted] 2025-01-11 21:06

Modified? What "sensors" are missing? Parking sensors? They haven't had those since 2021/2022. It looks like Model Y will be following in the footsteps of the Cybertruck and won't be coming with a "T" logo in Australia and potentially other markets. Also it's very, very common for vehicles to not have a license plate on the front in marketing/unveiling materials across the industry.

[deleted] 2025-01-11 21:07

Outside of the type of person who scrolls the font page of reddit, no one gives a shit about Elon.

[deleted] 2025-01-11 21:09

The chiseled front & rear look great, but they really should have updated the crease on the doors. It's always been my least favorite part of the Model Y's styling and it just doesn't jive with the new angles on the front and rear.

ctzn4 2025-01-11 21:10

Have you guys heard of Xpeng, an EV mfr from China? Because I'm seeing some resemblances that I don't like. https://preview.redd.it/2gomnhe3kfce1.jpeg?width=2880&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e0cc4728ddcdc0645c897f7bfb37b1f13eff96be

Raunhofer 2025-01-11 21:17

Oops, I meant to write missing tow hook cover. As we are forced to use license plates, omitting them is questionable, even if others are doing it too. OP may have seen images with a license plate prior, which could explain why in this specific series of photos (video) the car seem better than in photos.

hairy_quadruped 2025-01-11 21:18

Australian here. Many of my friends have stated they wouldn't consider buying a Tesla because of Musk's recent behaviour.

say592 2025-01-11 21:18

Doesn't really matter if they identify that way, what matters is how they see the world. There is a reason for pretty much everyone to not like him.

Every_Tap8117 2025-01-11 21:21

Front is a much needed refresh the rear, especially the lower part really needs more work.

sergiu230 2025-01-11 21:24

I'm in Europe and own a model 3. We won't buy another Tesla now that he is meddling in German politics. Many in my friend circle feel the same.

pinpinbo 2025-01-11 21:54

Good point. Didn’t realize the no logo. I hope the USA version has no logo in front.

scrotumseam 2025-01-11 21:57

Like like every other Chinese ev. So bland.

DuneProphecy 2025-01-11 21:57

You can easily remove frunk emblem. I did same thing on Model 3 and it looks so much better.

LoudSighhh 2025-01-11 21:58

Looks more premium, love it!! Feel bad for the model x, the red headed step child of tesla

redgaze30 2025-01-11 22:06

I always get a laugh over these marketing videos that show families so matter of factly using their cars. I know it's meant to showcase real-life examples of the new cars, but here we are all speculating over it and this family is just using it like no big deal.

Bigbadwolfofwallst 2025-01-11 22:12

Does it though??

DyZ814 2025-01-11 22:13

This is one of those statements that would normally be true when saying it on Reddit, but is absolutely false in real life lol. People fucking hate Elon. I'd even go as far to say his sentiment off Reddit is way worse.

9thArrow 2025-01-11 22:13

It does at 0.14 seconds in the video when the light bar is off. Much nicer

MisterBumpingston 2025-01-11 22:16

I suspect it’s the lens and focal length. Model Y generally looks bulbous, but using a flat lens can make it appear much less so.

9thArrow 2025-01-11 22:22

Can't change its unfortunately 😢. This is the last time I will use voice typing for a post !

[deleted] 2025-01-11 22:24

Anecdotal, but the only people I have ever heard say bad thing about him IRL are super libs.

Dorkmaster79 2025-01-11 22:25

The model Y was always the ugliest Tesla, so whatever.

SpaceCadetHS 2025-01-11 22:28

interesting that the bottom one doesn’t have the circle either.

krische 2025-01-11 22:32

But without the logo, how do you know where to push the frunk latch shut?!

1corn 2025-01-11 22:32

Yeah exactly. I still like the cars and I'll definitely miss lots of things like the connectivity, Autopilot, charging convenience, no maintenance, ... but it now feels like driving around in an AFD billboard. No thanks. It's really a shame because I think the facelift looks great. My next car could be the Ioniq 5 N Drift King Edition, if they bring it to Germany soon.

HIGH_PRESSURE_TOILET 2025-01-11 22:33

I thought the tow hook circle was just obscured by the jpeg artifacts. Other pics on tesla.cn have it. https://preview.redd.it/fiuuvy61zfce1.jpeg?width=1290&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=9efa36013c9bdb1a2305368886358a4e77bf57f3

Cantthinkofaname282 2025-01-11 22:35

No way it's easier to identify a silver badge than the license plate?

matttopotamus 2025-01-11 22:35

Agreed. I removed it on my highland 3. I left it on, on my older 3, but with the redesign I think it looks better debadged.

Poseidon927 2025-01-11 22:37

You can see a faint outline of the top part of the circle on the blue car. It's definitely there.

katherinesilens 2025-01-11 22:38

To match the model to the plate and help ensure it isn't a stolen plate. License plates in China (especially for gas cars) are highly coveted and, in some cases, extremely expensive. The whole body of vehicle law there is very restrictive with customization in general as well.

Recoil42 2025-01-11 23:25

Yeah, all of these people are spouting nonsense. They won't be able to point you to an actual law. [Li doesn't have an easily-observable badge on the Li Mega](https://www.carscoops.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/03/Li-Auto-MEGA-EV-4-scaled.jpg), it's black-on-black. [The Hongqi brand doesn't have a badge whatsoever. ](https://s3.eu-central-1.amazonaws.com/hedinautomotive-nl/02/hedin-automotive-nieuws-wk32-hongqi-page-image-1.png) [Many of BYD's cars just have chrome-embossed Chinese symbols](https://en.byd.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/byd-han-scaled-1.jpg), no brand badge. Good reminder that people often just make things up on the internet.

Mundane_Engineer_550 2025-01-11 23:50

Even if it has a emblem I'm definitely removing it first thing

mfontanilla 2025-01-12 00:17

It’s the angle the photo is taken. When the angle is from the top shooting downward, it looks really clean. However if the angle shows the underbody, it’s a bit meh.

Whit3boy316 2025-01-12 00:19

F26N55 2025-01-12 01:20

It’s nonsense, they probably just put the badge because in China having a Tesla is more of a flex than elsewhere.

Aqua_Puddles 2025-01-12 03:07

Amongst others, Model S won a design award in 2015 in Australia. Model 3 won a design award in 2018 by Automobile Magazine

zoompis47 2025-01-12 04:06

Yea i agree the blank square space under the taillights just doesn’t site right with me. Maybe even the tesla logi along it would 🤷

Loud_Hamster5075 2025-01-12 04:14

>  They won't be able to point you to an actual law. Here you go. https://www.gov.cn/ztzl/2006-02/07/content_181407.htm 第五条 国产汽车在车身前部外表面的易见部位上应当至少装置一个能永久保持的商品商标。 Which translates to "Article 5: Domestically manufactured automobiles must have at least one permanently affixed trademark on a visibly accessible area of the exterior front surface of the vehicle." Your first example, Li Mega does have a [black logo](https://youtu.be/vMowPNqMPac?si=SGmeHOHcnw3pZXRH&t=99) if you look close enough Your second example is Hedin mobility which isn't Hongqi, and it doesn't seem to be a Chinese car Your thrid example has a front logo "汉" Sometimes people are not just making things up on the internet.

Loud_Hamster5075 2025-01-12 04:19

Another reason is that it's easier for eyewitnesses to tell the make of the car if there's a hit-and-run

Recoil42 2025-01-12 04:20

Your rule says there must be at least one product trademark in a conspicuous position, on the outer surface of the body. It does not say "logo on the hood". Chinese cars are not mandated to have a logo on the hood. So yeah, sometimes people are just making shit up on the internet — like you, right now, protesting the second car is a 'Hedin' **when it is indeed a** [**Hongqi E-HS9**](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hongqi_E-HS9) **from** [**FAW**](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FAW_Group), like I already said. You have no clue — you're spouting off.

Loud_Hamster5075 2025-01-12 04:28

商标 means logo. The translation was chat gpt. Also no one is saying it must be on the hood. Don't make up things people didn't say. Never heard of Hedin, which was on the license plate in the image you first shared. As for Hongqi, that red line in the middle is the new logo. Watch [this](https://www.youtube.com/watch?app=desktop&v=XM3T5W46B7A) if you can understand Chinese. The new Hongqi cars all have that red line. None of your 3 examples support what you said, try another one.

Recoil42 2025-01-12 04:31

>Never heard of Hedin No shit, because it doesn't exist as an automotive brand. Hedin isn't an automaker. *Hedin is the name of* [*Hongqi's importer in The Netherlands*](https://www.hongqi.nl/)*.* That you couldn't identify the flagship car from one of the most storied brands in Chinese automotive history and instead decided to just totally make some bullshit up is as conclusive a proof of the point as I could imagine.

MECO_2019 2025-01-12 05:21

[deleted] 2025-01-12 05:58

Cybertruck has left the chat

jack-K- 2025-01-12 06:11

I may be wrong but I think the major dislike of this design isn’t the design itself but what people associate it with when they see it, I think when you make an effort to stop actually thinking about other cars when you see this and just look at it for what it is, it really doesn’t look so bad, and who knows, if it’s really successful and well liked like the previous generation was, maybe this will become the first car we associate this design with removing that bias altogether.

boowhitie 2025-01-12 06:53

Car ads almost never have a front plate. If anything they do often have an illegally modified rear plate (painted to match the body cover). But hey, they have the disclaimer that it is a professional driver on a closed course, so everything is peachy!

sicing 2025-01-12 07:01

But it’s not moving. It’s one frame being shown for longer. How does that look better? Aside from the charging port which obviously is not what we’re talking about.

admin_default 2025-01-12 07:23

This. It’s not that the new design is bad, per se, it’s that it’s devoid of identity. It reads as ‘generic crossover EV’. Tesla has thus far failed to cultivate a distinct design language.

ctzn4 2025-01-12 07:27

I thought the headlights above sharp fog lights design was supposed to be somewhat of a hallmark design for Teslas (seeing as they brought the same fog lights from the first Model 3 to the S and X refresh in 2021), but then the 2024 Model 3 takes away the fog lights completely, leaving me confused and somewhat disappointed (though the M3 Performance brings the air ducts back). I think their “brand identity” going forward will be generic looking front light bars that’s slightly angled on either side to resemble a Cybertruck or Cybercab. The Model Y might be the first in a line of cars to follow suit.

Bigpandacloud5 2025-01-12 07:53

Bigpandacloud5 2025-01-12 15:04

Axle-f 2025-01-12 19:21

The refreshed M3 looks terrific. I’m surprised they didn’t simply extend that to the Y.

admin_default 2025-01-12 20:25

The new M3 is nice. But even that looked like a run of the mill Chinese EV to me, though not so much as the MY. Personally, I think the closest Tesla got a distinguishing feature was the front slit “grill” introduced in the 2016 Model S. This had the potential to become an iconic feature akin to the BMW dual grill. But Tesla seems destined to follow the pattern of other U.S. automakers. They’ll introduce some nice designs here and there (mostly achieved by imitating Porsche) but fail to ever achieve an iconic heritage aesthetic like the Germans.

ReticlyPoetic 2025-01-12 21:56

Can I view it anywhere but x.com?

Super-Kirby 2025-01-13 01:45

Damn. I got a 3 because I didn’t like the way the Y looks, until now.

idk012 2025-01-13 03:08

Does it automatically close?

ddaghan 2025-01-13 08:01

The design is ok, but honestly, they could make it more like the new Model 3 long range, that really looks good. Instead of light bars, they could implement a heads up display.

greyscales 2025-01-13 11:22

That costs more money, they wanted to update the least amount of parts possible to save money.

xKronkx 2025-01-13 15:36

Some people may love this but all it tells me is I need to upgrade my 3 to either a new 3 or an S before Elon “cyber’s” the entire fleet
