But in the US market, can it yet dethrone the F-150?
Why compare to suv?
Nobody has beat AWD @ my avg 272 Wh/mile (290 Wh/mi rated) with 76.2 cu ft (2158 L) of interior storage behind the front seats with 6.8" ground clearance. The model Y is the ultimate low cost per mile transport with tons of cargo space. I just hit 1 year mark and have had to go back to service zero times. Nothing has gone wrong with it. Not likely. Ford sold over 700k f series trucks last year in the US. Tesla sold 267k model y. This was a quick google search. Both numbers could, in reality, vary wildly.
And Juniper refresh will blow those numbers out of the water.
Which is really bullshit to judge the entire F series has one single unit.
Let's just take a second to appreciate how insane that is for someone so new to the car world compared to everyone else.
Rub it in - There was no Model Y available when I bought my Model 3 LR AWD in 2018 :)
Sounds like you are past due for an upgrade…JUNIPER
Same for me when I bought my previous model 3 in 2019 ;) I upgraded when the blue+white Y was $37,900 last December for AWD to avoid needing chains in the mountains of California
I would guess the majority of those are F-150s, which you see a lot more often than the larger F-250 or 350. Even if only half are F-150, that still easily beats the Model Y, I’m afraid
lol yes I am waiting to see what comes out soon :) (The 3 has been awesome however)
F150s are for commercial use too. It will be hard for solely a passenger vehicle to overthrow F150
Model 3 refresh didn’t do too much for sales.
I have both. I’m a taller guy and much prefer the model Y. After driving SUV all my life, getting into my wife’s 3 is painful.
Sedan body style is niche now
Even if you combined Model X and Model Y sales it still wouldn’t come close to F-150 alone.
Efficiency wise it was a huge improvement, Juniper will be similar
Sales wise it wasn’t and that’s when Elon was still perceived as sane by some and the Chinese were not full on buying domestic
It was a smart move to upgrade and learn / refine the swap process on the lower volume 3. Y swap will be faster and smoother after the testing with the 3
I’m use to driving compact sedans. The Model Y, didn’t feel any different minus the higher ride height. Which I liked
Thought Tesla outsold the f-150 in 2023?
What are you talking about? It's all car types not just SUVs
I'm hoping 2025 M3P is delayed because they are sharing some new parts with Model Y Juniper Performance. Might be wishful thinking though. The new performance rear motor is limited by the battery pack currently.
Please add hatchback or whatever it’s called to the model 3, that would make it closer to the ideal car for my needs. I don’t need the added bulk of the Model Y. But the much bigger cargo space in a model 3 would be a game changer.
Worldwide the Model Y outsold the F-150, but not in the US.
Pretty happy with our two Ys. Only major issue was a security module that needed to be replaced under warranty. They sent a mobile tech so I didn’t even need to do anything.
Yes, not in the U.S.. It used to be a Toyota Corolla for the world.
I think this is many people's want, would make it the ideal car if it had a hatch.
Is it limited by the pack or the inverters?
I'm 6'4" and 225lbs, drove both, and prefer the model 3. The middle mirror of the Model Y creates a huge blind spot because it sits lower (or the seats don't go as far down?) and I felt I had about an equal amount of room in both with the seats pulled back and lowered. I do like the hatch on the Y, though, but I prefer the looks and energy efficiency of the 3. I wish the steering wheel extended out further in both. In the back seat of the 3 I do hit my head on bumps.
Yeah I don’t like having to squat down to get into a car. Enjoy the heighth of the y more .
Hard to say where prices and sales would be now if they didn't come out with the refresh. I think they could be significantly lower.
And it's a car that starts above $40k. All the runners-up start in the $20k range. It's insane that a $40k+ car sells this well.
Do they realize today is the last day
I mean, it's just semantics. People would also say it's bullshit to boast about these "best selling car" numbers if Tesla offers so few models Other OEMs may split up various trim levels into different models, have Y-lite model that's a 3 but taller, etc. Toyota's fleet is so enormous these days they'll never have a headline like this.
3 with hatch is my ideal vehicle. the 3 is much more fun to drive than the Y.
[removed]
Just wonder why you prefer hatchback?
M3 is a liftback already. What real world difference would it really make in hatchback (combi/estate/wagon)? You'd just get a little bit more vertical space when you have to carry bulky items. So like once a year or less for vast majority of people?
Juniper 2025 may continue this.
Does anyone actually pay the starting price of those cars tho? A lot of them are usually pretty low spec unless you add tons of expensive options. Teslas are, mostly, all one spec.
Yeah I kind of don't understand this. As of right now, the Corolla is #1 by like 50k units.
I personally like the increased storage capacity, the ability move things from my trunk to the cabin without going around, and I like the open visibility of a hatchback.
Yeah even in 2022 when I went to buy the MY was $72k, the M3 was $52k, with incentives, since MY didn't qualify for any in Canada. Thus, you come to Canada, prepared to see infinite white M3 RWDs. :P
Got 3's beat on interior storage, but, on my 2018 lrrwd 3 my lifetime wh/mile is 230. And if I don't have air conditioner or heater running it'll be under 200
I get pretty decent efficiency on my 2023 model 3 RWD (193 average wh/mi over 19,000 miles). I wonder what I’d get on a highland, and how close I could get to 193 on a Y.
I just want my Steer by Wire Model 3 upgrade.
The Model 3 is definitely not a liftback. Refer to the Model S if you want to see what a liftback is.
My 2019 RWD 3 SR+ was 269Wh/mi average over 48k miles. I was extremely happy that the Y was only 272 avg must be the new motors, inverters
No. And the year is over?
IMPOSSIBLE! Reddit said that Elon killed all of Tesla’s sales.
Let’s see!
Sounds like you need a model Y.
The Model Y would add a bit of “bulk” that I don’t need. Living in a European city apartment, parking on the street aso is just a bit easier with the model 3 and I don’t need the larger size of the car overall. The general size and driving characteristics of the Model 3 are great for me, just need the larger capacity of the trunk that a hatchback would give. Make sense?
I like the general size and driving characteristics of the Model 3. It’s easier to park, more nimble and a bit more economic. And I don’t need the extra general size of the Model Y. But I have occasional situations where a larger trunk would be beneficial and a hatchback seems like a simple solution. Given how the Model 3 looks externally, I see no reason why it shouldn’t be a hatchback, just like the Model S and Y, but there’s probably something I dont know about it.
That extra vertical space is exactly what I’d like every now and then. And seeing as even the Model S has a liftback (thanks for reminding me of what it’s called), I don’t see why it shouldn’t also be in the Model 3. I see no practical advantage of not having it. But maybe you can help? Is it much more expensive to build?
It turns out that Tesla already has a hatchback design for sedans -- the Model S.
You really have to own it to see how good of a Telsa 3/Y are. Some shortcomings yes - that’s just like anything - but overall, they really do fit the needs of majority of people -
It's sad that "lower" cars like sedans and small hatchbacks are being fased out. Models that have been around for 40 years like the Ford Fiesta are being replaced by small SUV's. They have the same cargospace and person capacity, they're just higher off the ground. I don't want an SUV (many of which would be trash if you'd go "off-road" or would pull a trailer with.
Any rumors on when to expect the announcement?
Supposedly any day now
That’s because there were a HUGE number of sales late 2023 when they pushed discounts and incentives really hard and those were some of the cheapest prices people had seen in nearly 4 years since Covid. It’s too early to see the 21-23 model 3 crowd trade up yet in masses and lots of 2020 folks are in for a pretty penny so they’re going to hold those cars longer. Model 3 refresh is mostly being sold to new customers right now and Tesla has already come close to saturating the market.
Climate and driving style matter a lot.
Yup, it’s just way too expensive for me. They are actually pretty even sized it seems, having been parked right next to one, so the model 3 could pretty easily be a cheaper version of the model S. I get having different types of cars, I just don’t get what value the non-liftback design adds, when they about the same shape and size?
Same with the Model Y now.
I wanna buy
Any chance they will revert the turning signal to be a handle?
Don’t show this to the rest of Reddit, they still believe Tesla is having huge losses.
forces people into buying the Model Y. Know a few people that only bought it because the 3 did not have enough space.
Model y refresh isn’t out yet… what are you smoking?
I was referring to the old ones being pushed into into the market at high discounts, which will make some of the people who still want to buy a Tesla buy one of the old models Y now.
I have the 3 and the Y. Visibility out the back is better in the 3.
2024 is over??
I purchased one in 2024 to just play with FSD. Turned out I just love the car and what I choose to drive on most days. Never saw that coming.
Sunny SoCal, but also the SR+ had a performance tuned rear motor… not sure if the 2018 motor wasn’t tuned as high HP. Or they just drive extraordinarily slow?
Me: 1 year and 4 appointments that took on average a full month each. If the car doesn’t often have issues then why is the service center always booked for weeks? My Toyota never saw the dealership or a repair in 200k miles.
Sure, I'm just saying that Tesla has a hatchback blueprint that they could apply to the Model 3 if they wanted 😊
What repairs needed to be done that took a month each time?
Oh! Then yes, we’re absolutely in agreement then. It would seem more cost effective to me to use that template than to have a totally unique build for the Model 3. But I don’t know 🤷. Let the S be the luxurious version of the 3 and the X more luxurious version of the Y. Both 3 and Y would have liftback, but the Y would be larger in the mini-suv range. I thinlk those would still be pretty solid options with enough differentiation.
Yeah unfortunately the modern hatchback doesn't have the visibility older hatchbacks did. With all the technology in cars nowadays, visibility is less important anyway. I do miss the panoramic feel of the windows in old hatchbacks and wagons though. The view and the light was nice.
2024 is over.
Too bad the car has terrible resale value
Tesla doesn't give out sales numbers until the quarter is over.
Lol - I have a 2019, and I contemplate upgrading, but that's a LOT of money to replace a car that already works. Plus I either have to lease for the $7500 incentive or pay full price (no tax credit), and I don't even get much gas savings over the Model 3 I already have. Sure, it would be a bit newer/nicer, but if I wait I could get one with Hardware version 6 that is supposed to actually support full self driving some day... :)
Ah, okay, fair enough.
Maybe I'm missing it. Where did they "confirm" this?
I am done with electric cars. When will tesla make a non-electric car? I dont wanna get exploded if i had a major accident Edit - Here are the videos https://youtu.be/AWi7AeZaNcI?si=R68J2BIkQm_JXeeP https://youtu.be/B2yjvKcN2Es?si=ytM-OEzdvr131WC7 https://youtu.be/2UAAnD3ydLE?si=H2tz6csZo-DV_dUn https://youtu.be/uVSZ7KMJKWg?si=e_N0i0qSKHx849zO https://youtu.be/64MtT7hIcJ4?si=87We7XMbvmAvwhBn
A wagon you mean. That would be epic
> And the year is over? So?
I've driven a few SUVs over the years and they just feel like driving commercial vans or minivans. Big nope for me.
Eh you Elon suckers, you'd be saying now "it was a smart move to upgrade their higher volume model Y to get the most benefits as early as possible" if the upgrade order was reversed.
SUVs are a bigger seller now.
Family took order of 3 new model Ys this year. All three have been to the service center at least once. Dunno about anyone else but when I buy a 50k new car I expect better quality control.
Yep, but then they'd have to discontinue the S. 3 wagon performance, indicators and HUD is a dream car. I'd even be ok spending whatever they ask for for an S wagon
Hate the ride height
There is literally no reason for the sedan shape, or for a gimped trunk opening If you've ever owned a hatchback, you'll know: very similar storage to an SUV with the vastly superior dynamics of a sedan
Wrong on literally every point lol You get a shitton more space and more importantly you can actually load that space fully and efficiently unlike in the model 3 currently which is a sedan
“Exploded”? What have you been reading
Welcome to 2025
Tesla confirms...
Sir, this is Tesla, we have two vehicles, small and medium.
I’m 5’10” and 200 lbs. Test drove the 3 and Y and the 3 felt claustrophobic by comparison to the Y.
Didn’t you seen the videos? Today another tesla exploded. ( which reasons are yet to be known ) Now its been several cases of explosion during impact in accidents https://youtu.be/AWi7AeZaNcI?si=R68J2BIkQm_JXeeP https://youtu.be/B2yjvKcN2Es?si=ytM-OEzdvr131WC7 https://youtu.be/2UAAnD3ydLE?si=H2tz6csZo-DV_dUn https://youtu.be/uVSZ7KMJKWg?si=e_N0i0qSKHx849zO https://youtu.be/64MtT7hIcJ4?si=87We7XMbvmAvwhBn

Agreed, Tesla is nowhere close to Honda or Toyota - let alone Ford for that matter in terms of build quality. I was curious what repairs were needed - was it driveable or the panel gaps after delivery that can take multiple appointments to fix? Tesla is notorious for assemble quickly and let customers do QA later.
In 2024????
[deleted]
My mom recently totalled her car. She'd wanted a Tesla for years. Now she doesn't.
I'm not quite as tall, but i found the exact same issue with the rearview mirror when I sat in a Model Y a couple years ago when my wife and I were considering swapping her 3 for a Y. Really disappointing that it's lower than the 3's mirror, or at least not adjustable. Hopefully the refresh will fix that.
Just go away. Seriously.
lol it’s on track to be discontinued.
You keep spittin like that and you might just get level 11 bud
> not the entire F lineup Not in the US, at least. Maybe globally
They wish lolllll
Ay bro, bigger number = better, right?
Because people are morons now, or just too fat to get into lower cars
Such a fantastic car. And one of the best deals for $45,000 in the market.
I really hope ride comfort and NVH will be greatly improved in Juniper, then it will be the perfect car for me.
You mean 2025?
I thought it was the Corolla in 2024 for the win

My next car with either be an R2 or a model y. Coming from a model 3 performance.
They don’t re-badge their cars by geography. This statement is misleading.
I call bullshit - where's the source
Same. Elon told Tesla to put it on Twitter since they don't care about facts over there.
