Of course we'll never see this headline in the MSM. I saw the headlines everywhere yesterday about the "recall" and just rolled by eyes.
I couldn’t even find the details on what “it” was. If I’m understanding Tesla’s explanation, it seems like some type of low TPMS warning that would come on during a drive wouldn’t necessarily persist in some way or under some conditions, which don’t comply with some federal rule. It SEEMS like this is a bit like “the icons are the wrong size or font” situation, but I’m not an expert.
That’s how I understand it, and it’s probably going to be the kind of thing Tesla deals with over time as they navigate how to display warnings and other things when the only display for them is the screen (no discreet warning lights). People react strongly to recalls but I’ve personally only had the ones addressed by updates.
What a nothingburger, and of course it's been top post on tech subreddits here for the last couple of days at least. Like there's nothing more important to talk about.

there was someone in the investing subreddit yesterday explaining that Tesla just had a massive recall of 700,000 vehicles which was going to financially ruin the company. It had a ridiculous amount of upvotes too.
Say you have low tier pressure and get a warning. You park the car and drive it later. Apparently even if the tire is now good the warning is still supposed to stay on when driving it again. But Tesla would have it turn off and only turn back on if it detected the tire was low again during the new drive. All around seems silly. The "recall" was to have it go back to staying on no matter what on another drive when you turn on the car.
I’m not clear on what situations cause this. When my tires needed air recently (seasonal temp changes, the usual) that warning “light” stayed on across a couple trips over a couple days, because I was lazy and didn’t fill them immediately. When I did fill them, the light stayed on until I got a little down the road. Worked exactly like I expected.
It was only broken for a couple weeks in mid November. It’s supposed to work how it worked for you.
My wife’s Honda Pilot has a TPMS issue too, but to get it fixed I have to waste a half a day sitting at the dealership.
I knew it. Both our cars threw under inflated errors and didn't go away after they were topped up.
You should have heard the collective 'ooooh did you see the Tesla recall?!?!' the shit talkers at work popped their heads up for when this news dropped. They were very disappointed when I told them these recalls are usually a software update and sure as shit its one we got a month ago lol.
You can look at to two ways.. on the one hand it shows the capability of Tesla to easily fix many issues by pushing out a software update, on the other hand why did it take a recall notice for Tesla to fix a potential safety issue that was so easy to fix? It should have been done as soon as Tesla were aware. Whilst it seems petty on the regulator, it’s also a bit of an own goal by Tesla.
I don't know how the reporting rules work, do you? apparently this was fixed before the notice went out. For all i know tesla may be obligated to report it, or it may be automatically declared a recall even if its already fixed based on some reporting rule. In any case, it's apparently been addressed.
I work at Giga Texas and no one says a single thing about any recalls other than the goofy cybertruck ones like the accelerator getting stuck in the floor

TPMS typically works with either a battery powered sensor(direct), or tracking the wheel rotation speed(indirect). Indirect obviously only works when the car is moving. Direct can update while stopped, but usually doesn’t to save the sensor’s battery. So when you first get into the car and get ready to drive, it usually doesn’t know your current tire pressure. Thus, once TPMS detects a low-pressure event, the safe thing to do is activate the warning light(icon in our case) and keep it on until the sensor can confidently report safe pressure again while driving. The problem was, 2024.38.3 was clearing the warning icon when waking from sleep, even though car had no evidence the low pressure was fixed while it was asleep. And yes, your Civic was supposed to keep the TPMS light lit until you’d driven for a bit after refilling the tires. That’s def how my 2013 Fit handled it.
It's not a safety issue. It's a trumped up government Excel spreadsheet check box of a regulation that no one has any input in establishing. It's pointless. Low tire pressure is detected and informed to the user, no matter what. And they did fix it when they found out, like a month ago. This is a retroactive action. And it's not a recall, but that's the only language the government supports because reasons. Why hasn't the government updated their process to make these notifications more accurate? They've know their recall notices have been inaccurate for years

To be fair, both u/warlockflame69 and you are off. It has always been politicial, not because of left or right originally but because they were a threat to established industries. Now they are just a pawn for both sides of the political aisle depending which helps what industry. And the only reason the propaganda is effective is because of everyone (like both of you) that take sides outside the company itself and what it objectively does.

From a safety standpoint, Tesla is up there with Volvo and Mercedes-Benz. Have there been some fatalities? Of course, just as there is with every other major automotive manufacturer, but per capita, Tesla are very safe vehicles. I don't own one, but that doesn't mean I never will. My wife doesn't like the cybertruck. She says it looks like a toy. I like it...because it looks like a toy 😁
We had the problem. It was throwing a warning up, even though everything was fine. It was mildly annoying, particularly at first. Once we learned it was just a silly software problem and that the pressure readings were accurate, we just ignored it. And now it's gone.
There is a certain amount of unavoidable political topic to it due to Elon's wealth (and therefore his ability to act politically) being increased for each new car purchase (margin x %shares he owns? not sure if it is more complex as they use margin for other things I assume). Of course, the same can be said for any other CEO, Elon is just being one of the most vocal, and having an EV is not a requirement like buying a product from some other business (that has an equally vocal CEO) may be.
Also unlike most CEO’s his compensation is almost all performance based…which most of the country would be all about. “Merit based”. But because he was so successful now it’s an issue…and they would prefer him have a fixed income of hundreds of millions like many other CEOs. Also most people have no idea what other CEOs think or spend money on for all the other products they own…and don’t care to know. Lazy consumers.
what’s the TPMS?
I have a dead TPMS sensor. The alert will clear itself after the car has been asleep for some time. I know my sensor is dead, because it has been dead for awhile, but for the sake of understanding the “issue,” let’s say the TPMS sensor is not dead, but the air is low. When I leave for work in the morning, I will not have a TPMS alert. It takes about 20 minutes for it to alert. Potentially dangerous if I was driving highway speeds with low air because I had a nail in my tire that was leaking air.
When you see idiots being widely believed by investors like that, just do the opposite of what they’re saying. When I see idiots talking down (and trending/being believed) Tesla, I buy. When I see idiots talking Tesla up, I sell. Not quite that straight forward, but it’s definitely a good indicator that we’re nearing an inflection point.

The longer it stays low price the more shares they can scoop up. There is a huge monetary incentive to bash Tesla, even if you're simultaneously buying and hoarding TSLA shares. The bulls know this, the bears know this and their AI bots know this.
