From the article: Tesla‘s Giga Shanghai is reportedly gearing up to begin mass production of the refreshed Model Y, codenamed Project Juniper. According to a report from Chinese media outlet LatePost, the updated Model Y will begin rolling off production lines at Giga Shanghai in January 2025.(via [CnEVPost](https://cnevpost.com/2024/12/19/tesla-shanghai-to-start-production-facelifted-model-y-jan-report/)) The report doesn’t identify the source of the news, but it also talked about the [departure](https://driveteslacanada.ca/news/teslas-giga-shanghai-leader-song-gang-steps-down/) of Song Gang, Giga Shanghai’s lead manager, which we told you about yesterday. Beyond the standard five-seat configuration, Tesla is also reportedly planning to introduce a six-seat Model Y by late 2025. The six-seat variant will likely be exclusive for the Chinese market. Details of the refresh Model Y are still unconfirmed, but will likely feature enhancements in design, technology, and performance, mirroring the significant updates introduced with the Model 3 refresh, known as Project Highland. The new Model Y is expected to include a redesigned front end, improved energy efficiency, and a quieter cabin. Other refinements are likely to include interior upgrades such as multi-colored ambient lighting that wraps around the interior, and not just the dash, which itself will likely also feature a sleeker design. One notable change seen in the updated Model 3, the removal of gear and turn signal stalks, will likely also extend to the new Model Y.

China had an average household size of 2.98 people in 2021.

Is the 6 seater using a bench in the front, or captain chairs in the middle?

matthew19 2024-12-19 15:45

Six seater would be captains in the second row. It’s popular because of ease of access to the third row. But I can’t imagine it in the Y.

ContractSouthern9257 2024-12-19 16:13

There's a lot more expected interactions with grand parents in China

decrego641 2024-12-19 16:22

They’d have to add length to the China variant that gets this, there’s no way they could do it without.

matthew19 2024-12-19 16:27

I have a 7 seater. Delete the second row middle seat and it’s there, but very cramped. It would be interesting to see a Grand Y longer version, but it seems un-Tesla to do that.

Evora86 2024-12-19 16:38

Also have a 7seater, when we use the third row we typically put the middle seat down to get more airflow back there. It’s also less claustrophobic that way. Would love a 6seat variant.

matthew19 2024-12-19 16:55

I sat in the back row once and was surprised at the airflow from the front seats when the vents are pointed up. It’s like it rides along the roof glass and hits your face. Kind of nice.

Noujiin 2024-12-19 16:59

How many children do you have in that car? We’re currently looking for a car and our third child is on the way 😅

feurie 2024-12-19 17:31

I don’t meet many people who actually like using a six seater though. They’d rather have another seat. It’s only useful if you have exactly 6 and no luggage. If you have five you’d rather have a bench. If you have six, a bench plus a foldable set of two in the back would mean just throw up one and have a nice area for storage.

instantnet 2024-12-19 17:35

True about that they value them more than the United States

Evora86 2024-12-19 18:17

We only have 2 kids, but we haul the grandparents around for family gatherings so the kids get sent to the third row during those times. My mom could technically fit back there but having to climb back there is brutal for a 70 year old, that's why a 6 seat variant would be popular, makes access way easier.

TigglyWiggly95 2024-12-19 18:50

Why would the six seat be exclusive when Americans would want this too?

LeaderElectrical8294 2024-12-19 19:10

Americans love 6 seaters. That’s why they have the MX with captains chairs. Weird choice here.

TiltSoloMid 2024-12-19 19:11

6 seat config like a model X?

TigglyWiggly95 2024-12-19 19:16

Maybe it is just initially in China but I agree captain chairs are a huge upgrade

[deleted] 2024-12-19 23:40

americans too fat to fit 6 in a Y

TigglyWiggly95 2024-12-19 23:45

I mean didn't say to fit adults but would be great for kids/young teens

Past_Explanation69 2024-12-20 00:14

Please just release a bigger Model X with three full rows

matthew19 2024-12-20 03:31

We have three kids. Usually ride 3 across the 2nd row no problem. If they bring a friend or argue that changes.

g1aiz 2024-12-20 07:22

And the US is around 2.5

SmarmySnail 2024-12-20 12:01

The devil is in the details. Most prefer the 6 seat configuration in the model X -- so I'd say this is off base. A lot has to do with whether or not you have kids in car seats, and how that impacts access to the third row. You can't easily fold bench seats with car seats strapped into them.

007meow 2024-12-20 13:24

Because Elon hates America. China gets Highland and Juniper preferential treatment

specter491 2024-12-20 14:15

I was unimpressed with the X 6 seater. Captains chairs had minimal seat recline/movement options, no easily accessible cup holders, no interior side arm rest, and all that for a super expensive cost.

Who will expect you to regularly visit aunts and uncles as well

Pardonme23 2024-12-20 23:49

How many people use a cyberyruck to haul things?

CircleRedKey 2024-12-21 17:41

If they did this.... They'd double their sales. X and Y are too close in size. Missing a full size suv from the lineup

Clean

laplasz 2024-12-22 16:31

hope - they will introduce steer-by-wire system for the refreshed model Y

SonuOfBostonia 2024-12-23 16:41

There's a lot of jokes in the replies, but the truth is competition. There was already a long body model 3 in China, and if the new model y doesn't come with a 3rd row it would fail to compete in China. And that's the real answer

TigglyWiggly95 2024-12-23 17:48

US has a 3rd row too. I just want captain seats in the second

notunsureever 2024-12-24 02:46

What about power share

aerbits 2024-12-25 07:11

My 2025 MYLR has 7 seats here in the USA
