Tesla should come out with a feature that lets you set the height of the hatch if your home and then any height when in public.

In my opinion a powered lift gate that is not aware of its surroundings is poor design.

BraveRock 2024-12-18 01:15

I thought it already [did.](https://www.tesla.com/ownersmanual/modely/en_us/GUID-3667D28B-5B3B-49CE-A1C1-3D70AC60D9F6.html#CONCEPT_SDX_J2K_5TB)

ginger_VS_pie 2024-12-18 01:16

The car knows the home location just like the mirrors when they fold in when you're home.

dr-hightower 2024-12-18 01:17

I believe you open the trunk, as it opens press the button to stop it, then hold it down to remember that height.

ginger_VS_pie 2024-12-18 01:18

That is correct, but then ignore that setting when you're not home and go full height.

thumbs_up23 2024-12-18 01:19

Yes I would love this but also not sure I would fully trust it to then not hit my garage door. Kind of why I suspect they haven’t implemented this.

aznwhiteshark 2024-12-18 01:20

I approve of this request. My clearance at home is not as high and I always have to duck to not get hit in the head (I fail at this sometimes and it hurts).

[deleted] 2024-12-18 01:20

Only let's you adjust it to a permanent height. I have a low garage and I've done this, but when I open my trunk in a parking lot it doesn't open all the way. Totally a first world problem but also probably an easy thing to do. It lets you set charging rates for different locations, this is the same idea

IWantToPlayGame 2024-12-18 01:24

I also wish there was varying heights to it opening. Yesterday I needed to grab a jacket real quick. I could grab it without the whole hatch open. It was pouring raining. I only needed the hatch to crack open, but instead it opens all the way letting some rain get in. I know it's not a big deal, but still, it would be helpful to have it half open. Also in certain areas, I don't want my trunk to be open all the way due to the shadiness of the people in that area.

Only_Mastodon4098 2024-12-18 01:29

The X uses the cameras to watch for obstacles. I have never seen it hit anything overhead. Doesn't the 3 do the same? I don't know because my 2020 doesn't have push-button trunk opening.

sergei-rivers 2024-12-18 01:31

Fully agreed on the feature, just would open the hatch nervously every time at home.

Cha_Dude 2024-12-18 01:32

The X has special ultrasonics that go through the metal of the door, not the camera.

tesny 2024-12-18 01:33

I posted the same suggestion [here](https://www.reddit.com/r/TeslaLounge/s/tIRAG8kFhZ) and one person mentioned that it's possible that the current custom height is actually stored in the controller in the trunk only and the MCU at the front only issues an open/close command only. I don't know if it's true, but that could be the reason why Tesla hasn't enabled a custom height at different locations.

matthew19 2024-12-18 01:38

That would be the simplest method. Home height and everywhere else.

GrandArchitect 2024-12-18 01:39

a sensor is all it would need, ya?

ginger_VS_pie 2024-12-18 01:39

I can see the fix for this would be to send the open command then x seconds later stop. And then on the computer you would have to set the height.

switchmod3 2024-12-18 01:39

You can still push the liftgate further up even if the setpoint is low. But yes 1st world problems.

ken830 2024-12-18 01:42

Agree. I gave them this feedback in 2013, but it never happened. We now have an X and it has an ultrasonic sensor on the roof spine and the trunk height is automatic now. Problem solved. Just but an X, I guess. /s

wall-E75 2024-12-18 01:42

Ah I see now what you are asking. Like the fold mirrors? The mirrors can be geo linked to work or home or any place you need the mirrors folded.

ken830 2024-12-18 01:43

You should be able to press the button again as the trunk is opening and it will stop. You can hold it and prevent it from opening and it will stop as well, but it's more cumbersome.

tesny 2024-12-18 01:43

That's a great idea for a workaround! Tesla folks, pleeeeease?

ken830 2024-12-18 01:44

The X has an ultrasonic sensor in the spine of the roof.

wall-E75 2024-12-18 01:44

Yes, this would be good.... But what about group chat text msg? Does anyone else have issues when using the hands-free function when responding to a group chat?

revaric 2024-12-18 01:47

Is it supposed to read your mind or something?

Only_Mastodon4098 2024-12-18 01:50

But didn't Elon say ultrasonics are expensive and un-needed? /s

Former-Discount4279 2024-12-18 01:54

Same for model x doors...

Mr_Cruisin 2024-12-18 01:55

100%. Honestly this may be my biggest feature request.

zikronix 2024-12-18 02:03

Agreed

415646464e4155434f4c 2024-12-18 02:05

Op said something different. His point is to make it location dependent; which is actually a smart thing to do.

GroundbreakingFail3 2024-12-18 02:06

I set up my Apple Watch with my Tesla the other week and I have been annoyed that the trunk is not opening to the height I have set it up for to fit in my garage. This conversation made me try this a few different ways. When using my Tesla app in the phone the trunk opens to the height I have it set to. Almost all the way open but not quite so I don't hit my garage door. When I tell my phone through Siri to open trunk it also opens to the height I have set it to. However when asking Siri on my Apple watch it only opens like half way. I tried it 5 times in a row just now and same result. I wonder if there is a way to store several heights but they are not able to tie it to location? I'm so tired of hitting my head when out and about....

michoudi 2024-12-18 02:08

I remember test driving an X for the first time. It was parked close to a Model Y next to it. I wasn't familiar with the clearance of the back doors opening up so I was apprehensive about it hitting the Y. The Tesla associate told me it can sense the car and won't hit it and proceeded to open the rear door for me. It hit the Model Y next to it.

Turbulent-Abroad7841 2024-12-18 02:15

Clearly camera wasn't good for the falcon doors

[deleted] 2024-12-18 02:19

Good idea. Hitting pipes inside a parkade sucks.

el_archer 2024-12-18 02:30

Yep

trustme_imadoct0r 2024-12-18 02:32

This and a bike rack mode would be great!

NatKingSwole19 2024-12-18 02:36

Oh my god yes. Home is the only location I need to catch it early. My dummy kids always forget too.

[deleted] 2024-12-18 02:39

New corvettes can actually do this for the suspension. It will learn from where you raise the ride height for things like speed bumps or pulling into your driveway.

singletWarrior 2024-12-18 02:43

Or just make it sense surrounding and open as needed…

Valaj369 2024-12-18 02:49

Tell me about it. Just did it today. I thought I cracked my skull!

[deleted] 2024-12-18 02:55

PointyPointBanana 2024-12-18 02:56

Additionally, would like the trunk to open if you stand behind the car facing the trunk for a few seconds. When shopping and have your hands full of stuff, would be great. It can see you in the camera and know you approached with Bluetooth.

cheapdvds 2024-12-18 03:38

That's so true, I was new to model Y and my garage is only so high. When I went to the airport to load luggage and hit my head for the first time. One of my passenger hit her head too.

Shawaii 2024-12-18 03:43

No need. The Y has trained me. I already have a dent in my head and walk with a stoop any time I'm near the back of the Y.

BlueShoeBrian 2024-12-18 03:46

I don’t like that I have to manually unfold them

tynamite 2024-12-18 04:02

I’ve always been self-conscious in public about my trunk opening height. Tesla has always out for scrutiny. So I always feel like people are judging me when the trunk doesn’t open up very high and i manually push it.

colinstalter 2024-12-18 04:04

Same. mine is set really low bc of a low garage. this should be location dependent just like the mirror folding.

crewmannumbersix 2024-12-18 04:08

You care too much about what others think.

[deleted] 2024-12-18 04:09

This has never been mentioned before. /s

MysteriousFist 2024-12-18 04:23

The hardware might be different but at least on the X with the ultra sonic sensors on the roof the trunk open height is variable based on obstructions. The ceiling in my garage is really low and I was always super paranoid about the open height but the car always got it perfect. So one day I decided I’d not worry about it and not put my hands on the trunk as it opens since it had never let me down. That was the day that it opened into the ceiling

CandidAsparagus7083 2024-12-18 04:33

On the Y you can stop it where you want it and then hold the button to put that in as the new max height….is that not a thing on the 3?

Stegles 2024-12-18 04:33

I can’t speak for the model 3, but the model y has it, just manually move the hatch to the height you want and hold the button till it beeps.

batman77z 2024-12-18 04:57

Not possible to code this with current technology. Must use alien tech.

DMC_Ryan 2024-12-18 05:20

S and X do this with the suspension as well, I believe.

AStrangersOpinion 2024-12-18 05:25

I would just like a simple “press once to go to set height, double click (or press and hold) to go to max height”. That way it always go to set height for anyone else they may open it in my garage but i can just quickly double tap it to go all the way up any other time.

tynamite 2024-12-18 05:25

yep.

shivaswrath 2024-12-18 05:27

Taycan does this.

ohyonghao 2024-12-18 06:10

I used to drive Lyft and had my car set a little lower due to my parking garage at home. So many people hit their head on it, and it was only about an inch lower than full height.

nah_you_good 2024-12-18 06:17

I really wanted an X but after I got it as a loaner I decided to hold off. I tried opening the FWD like 20 times in my garage and it was an even mix of perfect and only opening 4". It never looked close to hitting anything, but based on how it couldn't even open I didn't trust it. I'm highly convinced it will work perfectly for a while then one day I have to file a hilarious insurance claim where the door opened and smacked my other car.

nah_you_good 2024-12-18 06:19

Yeah the S/X store the ride height for every location, it actually works super well. You basically just set the height to "high" anytime you're hitting a bit speed bump or dip in the road, and for the rest of its life (or computer's life?) it'll work. Might be the most reliable Tesla feature I'm aware of. Works more accurately than my phone key lmao.

katherinesilens 2024-12-18 06:20

The better way to do it would be to allocate storage for a second custom height in the trunk controller and then signal differently to it from the MCU when you want the second height.

MysteriousFist 2024-12-18 06:28

Yeah I don’t really trust the FWDs. I’m always paranoid about opening them close to other cars or in a parking garage. I somewhat regret not getting a Rivian instead but I didn’t want to assume the supercharger network will open up enough to not worry about. I honestly like the S the most but wanted an SUV for bikes and things. Though the lack of roof rack for skis kind of sucks too.

[deleted] 2024-12-18 06:29

Well, this one on the picture is a manual one... It doesn't have a motor.

nah_you_good 2024-12-18 07:05

Yeah the no roof rack is annoying, but at least the trailer hitch should give you some options right? I'm about to get a roof rack for my S, but my main use is bikes and it's such a hassle to get it up there. May have to get an after-market trailer hitch installed to put a rack there. I made a ton of excuses to try and get the X, but as I was thinking "well I'll just not open the FWD in my garage" I realized I was being dumb and chilled out. I wish the S had the cool auto-opening front doors at least, but with my Tesla Service experience I don't feel bad about having a slightly simpler car. I'm just missing some space for when there's more people in there, and maybe a bit more of the SUV benefits when going to certain hiking and skiing areas.

Haunting_Job_5357 2024-12-18 07:35

Why not just use the cam to determine if anything is above and open based on vision. The cam lifts with the tailgate should be doable.

spectradawn77 2024-12-18 07:51

That, unfortunately, doesn’t work yet… it’ll only respond to the last person the message came from. Still stuck in the early 2000’s with the texting tech…

spectradawn77 2024-12-18 07:56

Yup, but omg cost cutting 🤪🤪 2024 MX FWD sensors are shit in garage though. 40% opens fine, 40% just opens slightly where I have to hold the button to make it go all the way up, 20% wants to smack the garage rails and it fights me when I’m trying to hold the door from hitting… Cost cutting!!! 🤪🤪🤦🏻‍♂️🤷🏻‍♂️

psaux_grep 2024-12-18 07:57

You’re thinking too small. I want to use the cameras to find out the clearance. Or at least have one height for outdoors and another for indoors. They could store it per location, as they do with mirrors and ride height.

fr4nz86 2024-12-18 08:16

All it needs is to tag with geolocation. Someone told me it did it already. Bloody liar.

woalk 2024-12-18 08:52

I think app commands aren’t issued via key, they’re issued via API. Pretty sure you can have phone key disabled and still use app commands.

justbiteme2k 2024-12-18 09:20

I'd be happy if it just opened up higher, I'm so fed up with hitting my head around that thing.

Superraket 2024-12-18 09:47

This could be a liability issue. If you set your home to a lower height, but the GPS location for some reason is wrong, then you could end up doing expensive damage to your car, for which you could blame Tesla. I've had a couple of times where the location of the car on the map is wrong. So it could happen.

sparkyblaster 2024-12-18 09:49

The height is meant to be based on how high you can reach. I like the idea, but I fear it could lead to damage.

PilotPirx73 2024-12-18 10:08

After damaging my lift gate on my previous car, I am paranoid not to make the same mistake wit my new Tesla. I placed some padding (pool noodles) where the lift gate would hit but with the speed the lift gate travels, I think there would still be damage to paint.

B1A23 2024-12-18 10:24

I don't. Mine automatically unfold when I'm like 15-20ft from my driveway.

hhfugrr3 2024-12-18 10:27

They could also do with a handle so you can pull it down manually. The boot wouldn't close recently as the wind was so strong the car must have thought something was trapped in the door.

nohiddenmeaning 2024-12-18 10:29

While we are at it - opening the door with the app- why is that not a thing for the passenger side? I know pretty well how to open the door. But 8/10 times when I drive someone they struggle with opening the passenger door. This would be super useful whereas now it is super unuseful - when I have my hands free to use the app I might as well use them to open the driver door.

sarum555 2024-12-18 10:44

Yup... No more concussions, please..

mandysux 2024-12-18 11:11

That’s not how gas struts works mate

Life_Connection420 2024-12-18 11:30

Mine does it now. I set it for my garage height but even outdoors it would barely open. I got rid of the limitation but found it has sensors stop it in my garage. Fully opens in a parking lot.

powaking 2024-12-18 12:21

I just want mine to consistently close the garage door when I leave.

BlueShoeBrian 2024-12-18 12:40

Oh I’ve never tried driving away that far.. I’ll try it again today. Thanks!

samcrut 2024-12-18 13:01

They should add the ultrasonic sensors to the trunk. When you open it, if it senses it's 6" from hitting something, stop. Besides, I hear Teslas need help with not hitting things, but admittedly these would be of little use in an excessive acceleration crash.

B1A23 2024-12-18 13:05

They will also automatically unfold if you go above a certain speed, so yeah no need to manually unfold them.

Antwanian 2024-12-18 13:31

Time based solution is not acceptable for this fix because there's no calibration target for the "timing" They would need to add another calibration point at the factory / or at service.

KaleidoscopeEqual790 2024-12-18 13:36

I use my trunk for business so in and out many times per week. The number of times I’ve dinged myself because the thing doesn’t even go all the way up!

fifichanx 2024-12-18 13:43

Yeah that would be awesome! We bumped into the ceiling a the mall garage just the other day :(

tesny 2024-12-18 14:06

This is already available for [certain Teslas with iPhone](https://www.tesla.com/ownersmanual/model3/en_us/GUID-3667D28B-5B3B-49CE-A1C1-3D70AC60D9F6.html#GUID-AFE1B5B1-4A1F-4C36-962E-9C4D1DDE06C4__GUID-C5AB82D0-2DA3-4087-8BB2-BAD08ECDE2EB)

matt11126 2024-12-18 14:07

I think Geo location may be easier for Tesla to implement as they already have something similar with suspension heights in the S and X.

tesny 2024-12-18 14:08

Also, if you really want, there are aftermarket "trunk kick sensors" you can install where you wave your foot underneath the trunk to have it automatically open. I have it and it's handy in those situations (no pun intended).

tesny 2024-12-18 14:09

Yeah, but that will solve it only for future cars or requires upgrading cars. We want this feature now!

tesny 2024-12-18 14:14

OP is asking for the Tesla to remember a custom height at different locations (open all the way in parking lot, but only open half way in the home garage).

tesny 2024-12-18 14:14

Yes that exists, but OP is asking for the Tesla to remember a custom height at different locations (open all the way in shopping parking lot, but only open half way in the home garage).

tesny 2024-12-18 14:17

I am using a MyQ subscription and the garage door consistently closes when I leave. Never had a problem with it.

Stegles 2024-12-18 14:19

Right I missed that point, gotcha.

powaking 2024-12-18 14:20

I have the homelink module in my 2018 S. Sometimes it triggers but most of the time it does not. I almost always have to use voice prompt to bring up homelink icon while backing up. Sometimes it wants to call Mike forcing me to put the car in park, trigger homelink then continue to back up.

wall-E75 2024-12-18 14:32

Indeed

woalk 2024-12-18 15:09

Huh interesting, the more you know.

AutomaticAccount6832 2024-12-18 15:43

Teslas don’t have the foot sensor to open like all the others?

AutomaticAccount6832 2024-12-18 15:45

These have sensors to avoid touching anything. That would be great for the trunk as well.

Former-Discount4279 2024-12-18 16:17

I'm on my second model x, the sensors are dogshit. I have to physically restrain the doors at least once a week so they don't hit my garage door...

CarCooler 2024-12-18 16:25

Haha.

stomicron 2024-12-18 16:26

Do you have a jack shaft garage door opener?

[deleted] 2024-12-18 16:29

I'd also like it if my hatch didn't fill with water after a heavy rain.

Benus128 2024-12-18 17:18

I thought it would since it knows where to adjust the mirrors or raise the car (on fancy models). But it does not. And it sucks.

PointyPointBanana 2024-12-18 17:19

No, but there is a camera on the back that can see you, no reason not to do the same thing with that, plus the car knows you are there via the Bluetooth on your phone.

AutomaticAccount6832 2024-12-18 17:21

True. Also, many other brands do it with the ultra sonic sensor. But I know that not every Tesla has this anymore.

PointyPointBanana 2024-12-18 17:25

Oh I missed that, spring update I see. Also I have a Y and not available for it, and only for iPhone..... K. Why they can't do it on Y via the camera + bluetooth (non ultra wide bluetooth, or even allow you to open via saying "Hey Google" to your phone/watch as well as iOS's.....

SoggyAlbatross2 2024-12-18 17:53

YES PLEASE! You can shove the hatch all the way open though, and it will remember the lower setting when you get home but I've lost chunks of scalp to mine.

xTheMaster99x 2024-12-18 18:38

Do you actually think *anyone* cares? You're just a dude opening your trunk, I think you could *literally* have every single one of the 7 billion humans on earth watch you do it and not *one* would care enough to think "Hey, it didn't automatically open all the way!"

EnjoyMyDownvote 2024-12-18 19:40

That’s my situation also.

xjsquared 2024-12-18 19:54

This would be amazing - I have it set lower to avoid it hitting the overhead garage door, which means it becomes an head bonking hazard everytime its open. I always run back there to pop it up higher so my wife doesn't smack her head on the latch!

NWMike1 2024-12-18 19:54

To adjust the height of your Tesla’s powered trunk, follow these steps: 1. Open the Trunk: Ensure the trunk is fully open. 2. Manually Adjust: Raise or lower the trunk to your desired height. 3. Set the Height: Press and hold the button on the underside of the trunk for about three seconds until you hear a confirmation chime. This sets the new opening height. 4. Test: Close and reopen the trunk to confirm it opens to the set height

Exciting_Station_124 2024-12-18 20:45

So, based on location.

CandidAsparagus7083 2024-12-18 20:51

Right, missed that my bad

Ok-Satisfaction1330 2024-12-18 21:37

Haha model X already has this 😉

katherinesilens 2024-12-18 22:57

This would be geofenced in both cases. The MCU talks to the GPS antennas and is aware of location. What we're talking about is how it regulates the trunk opening height. The actual thing that controls the trunk directly is not the main computer but a trunk specific unit in the rear. What they were proposing was that, if the main computer is requested to open the trunk while the location is at home, then it has an alternate height. It achieves this by telling its trunk controller "open... aaaaaaaand... stop." I'm just pointing out that a slightly better option is for it to do what it already does for custom trunk height. It teaches the controller in the back in advance: "When you are asked to open the trunk, only open it to this maximum height." Then, when the main computer needs to open the trunk, it simply tells the trunk computer "open the hatch to the custom height" and lets the trunk computer do its own thing. How we should implement the home height is simply for the trunk computer to learn two different custom heights, and for the main computer to send two different requests (e.g. "open the hatch to the custom height" and "open the hatch to the home height") based on where the car is and let the trunk computer handle it. It's a little less hacky this way and has some advantages like accuracy and responsiveness. You also can't as easily end up in weird states or end up smashing the lid into the ceiling simply because something happened to the MCU or connection to interrupt the termination call.

katherinesilens 2024-12-18 22:59

Trunk controller is capable of it. It has plenty of memory, and the MCU can update its behavior. This would be a minor software update, which would have to be done either way.

[deleted] 2024-12-18 23:11

Also want a factory power frunk!

tynamite 2024-12-19 02:00

no.

daewootech 2024-12-19 03:57

I thought you move it to the set position and long press the button? Is that not a thing? I swear it was a thing.

Former-Discount4279 2024-12-19 04:03

Nope, but the problem is the door not the rail system etc since I'm always parked in the middle of it.

Rmawhinnie 2024-12-19 04:08

omg yes

nunca-natsuuu 2024-12-19 04:09

I think it will too, but network latency wouldn't be a thing if you're using phone key over BLE or the key fob for the older cars.

Apprehensive_888 2024-12-19 10:16

Nope, 7 years of ownership and not a single failure. The fwd have been excellent.

FPS_Warex 2024-12-19 12:19

Thats the great thing about these cars, something like that should be a pretty light set of codes, so it will guaranteed be implemented, unless they decided to exclude it for Future models but I doubt it!

cockykid_ny 2024-12-19 12:58

That’s a terrible request lol… just ask for the rear camera to function as a height sensor and always max open based on available height

The screen does? I think it just shows up fully open or fully closed and some constant animation between them.

Inevitable_Tie4864 2024-12-19 14:40

Can they make it adaptive instead? Some public areas like a garage parking lot don’t have the same height as my home. Why not just make it so the trunk only opens to a certain height based on how high the ceiling (picked up by cameras) is and won’t damage your car?

stomicron 2024-12-19 17:34

Yeah, I just thought the opener might be another low clearance object to detect. Maybe your overhead sensor is broken? Does your trunk open all the way?

GrandArchitect 2024-12-19 22:13

those pesky expensive ultrasonic sensors! argh!

Former-Discount4279 2024-12-19 23:03

To be clear this affected both my 2022 and 2024, I think the sensors just kind of suck in general.

justtryingguy 2024-12-19 23:44

Great idea!

Technical_Beyond111 2024-12-20 03:08

Brilliant idea.

SP3NGL3R 2024-12-20 04:03

So. A shitty solution I've got. Find the lowest ceiling you'll commonly use the trunk in. Set the height for that. Reprogram your brain to manually push the trunk up to it's local max each time. Bonus is that it helps you remember to not smash your head 5 seconds later

Crypt0-Knight 2024-12-20 05:24

Why not put sensors on the hatch and it can lift and stop x inches short from hitting.

ObjectiveSurround351 2024-12-20 06:09

yeah my dumbass thought mine had sensors until the trunk hit the short ceiling XD

[deleted] 2024-12-20 12:45

You’re*

nilarips 2024-12-20 12:49

I constantly hit my head out in public and I hate it but I know I’d forget and hit my garage too, it’s a lose/lose situation for me.

Dr_Pippin 2024-12-20 14:20

I assume you've found that they automatically open when you reach 30mph?

BlueShoeBrian 2024-12-20 14:23

Yes! I tried it out after I saw this and sure enough, they open right up as soon as I leave my driveway. I’m not quite used to NOT looking in the mirrors as I reverse though haha

cannonball-tesla 2024-12-20 15:03

Buy a Model X 😉

Baws-of-Fanny 2024-12-20 16:36

Tesla shouldn’t keep fuc#ing its product buyers. But they STILL DO. And IDIOTS keep buying them. STFU.

Dr_Pippin 2024-12-20 19:23

Haha, yeah, it still messes with me the few times I have to fold mirrors for parking in a certain garage spot.

kking254 2024-12-20 21:02

Tesla doesn't use a 3rd party controller anywhere on this path. They control all the firmware and can therefore achieve this. If the height is stored in the rear vehicle controller, then it can be updated to store two values and the command from the UI can be updated to specify which to use etc.

hotsoutherncpl 2024-12-20 21:05

It does. Put it where you want it and hold the button down until it beeps three times.

naruunas 2024-12-20 22:24

RTFM, OP

RageInvader 2024-12-21 00:06

Nahh, a better solution (if height is stored in trunk module) is when you hit the geofence for home send the height value to the trunk module. And when you leave set the height value again.

Wants-NotNeeds 2024-12-21 08:37

It doesn’t do that already? My 10 year old Subaru does that!

angeldicataldo 2024-12-22 18:03

But a model X and you will enjoy that feature

jeepslaave 2025-01-11 12:33

You can set the height of the hatch by pressing the button inside the hatch.
