Larger housing to protect the camera from road debris and salt, etc? Same sensor?
Probably just cheaper unit
I wonder if this will get less caked in mud and dirt.
The shape around the camera makes me think this has something to do with aerodynamics and water. Interesting!
Just to be clear, the model 2024 Highland had already this upgrade, but now it has been applied to the model Y.

Mine does not look like this.
What month did you pick up your highland?
Bahaha

I think it helps the droplets to run off
That’s really weird my August build has it are you located in the US?
Old one's an outie, new one's an innie
It looks like they just added an additional shield on the outside to protect it from the elements. The original housing looks to still be there. In what way is that cheaper looking?
Looks cleaner
Looks like a rain cover to me. I’m no expert, but it looks like the water would go around and drip down the flange in the bottom right corner
My september m3 LR has the camera with the protector around

the S i took delivery of last month has the 2025 camera
The camera is a separate unit in the middle. The ring around is part of the button bezel. I’ve been thinking a lot about whether or not aero modifications could help, but went on the assumption of «probably not that much» so I ended up installing a third party washer system. I could live with the dirty backup camera on my old model 3 since I had USS, but with the USS sensor removal it became much worse to live with on my model Y. This seems like something much easier to mount though. A bit of cleaning and it should glue right in.
If it works it effing is.
It looks like it’s just easier for the camera to be integrated in manufacturing, as the old one had super tight tolerances, and this will at least prevent warranty claims from water damage if the part wasn’t sealed correctly at the factory. Just my guess though. I don’t think it’s cheaper though, just saves them money down the line. I don’t think a 2mm lip will provide much protection regardless, as most debris that lands on the rear camera originates from the negative pressure that draws dust onto the back of your car, which this won’t do anything to safeguard against. If anything, this new design looks even harder to clean, and that crevasse is going to be impossible to get dirt out of without using a toothbrush or something. It may just be there to break the surface tension of water droplets.
I'd bet it's to reduce glare and debris
so the dirt can stick around the camera so you have to put more work into it and maybe some toothpicks to clean it, which keeps you longer at your car which is good for tesla i guess.
Damn, now I need an STL to make!
I always preferred my cameras uncircumcised
My same thoughts on cleaning with my OCD, lol. Interesting to see how it holds up.
Personally I think this is made for rainy areas, the old backup camera attracts rain drops and make backup camera useless in rain most of the time.
2025 comes with a foreskin, got it.
It’s an improvement. Rear camera gets water droplets all the time.
Could you please take few straight angle photos? I'm designing a retrofit shroud so they could convert 2024 version like mine.
I'm working on custom camera shroud to print to give 2024 version likewise protection.
Can someone explain to me why it is called 2025 despite being already produced in 2024? Why do they name it that way and at what time is a car 2025 even though it has been manufactured 2024?
Another way to analyze this that does not require rampant speculation is to simply take the assumption that Tesla redesigned this for good reason and with proper engineering and testing support. Ergo it's likely the new part works better than the old one in every way and none of the stuff you hypothesized applies.
What drives me nuts with this is that if Tesla is going to use cameras exclusively for FSD, then it needs jet sprayers to clean said cameras… Robitaxi: “pleasure driving you today sir…do you mind wiping my cameras off for me before you retrieve your bags?”

I want one for my plaid
The new one’s uncircumcised
Can we get one that hides itself behind the logo badge when not in use, so it doesn’t get dirty, like some cars have? But then, I suppose maybe FSD uses it while driving, to check whether you’re about to get rear ended. Maybe? Or maybe it just uses the side cameras for lane changes and such. Or some cars have a little water jet that automatically cleans it
If that affects aerodynamics I'm a monkeys uncle

It's a weird thing where automakers label vehicles manufactured the latter half of the year as next years' model. Many new vehicles you can buy today are 2025 models even though it's still '24. You will also notice steeper discounts on '24 models to clear inventory.

They don't give customers access to the frunk, maybe they keep an emergency assistance optimus in there?
Could it be to help glare for FSD, my FSD hates glare and will stop randomly
Speaking as a former service advisor with Tesla it uses the rear camera for FSD like you guessed so hiding it away wouldn't work unless it popped out during any sort of FSD operation. Motorizing it like that would just add weight and complexity/cost so I doubt that'd happen. Look at how they got rid of the motorized spoiler on the X
I agree. This is an engineering decision 100%
No, no, you see I know better than Tesla’s engineers. I’m sitting on an armchair as I type this.
Preliminary version is ready, I see no shroud in normal view but I'm worried about full angle that FSD sees. I really need to see what camera test views on 2024 Model Y with HW4. https://preview.redd.it/n1dzvpsleq1e1.png?width=1205&format=png&auto=webp&s=bc98f7185c512e9df5adc6c9438e309432e95e1b
The lower lip looks like it will reduce spray accumulation on the lens. Still has super easy access to wipe the lens too as you can see in the photo.
OK we will allow it in this case, but only because your chair has arms. We would also have accepted your opinion had you been perched on an antique three legged stool.
Stl? Would love to 3D print and try out
Update me when it’s available, I’d love to have this on my 2024 model

The tricky part is to match "non-visible" (visible only to AP/FSD) angle as seen in camera preview - I cannot really do it without 2025 owners help.
Well, you got my upvote. Let me know when you have updates

It's a convention from older days, but practical one. During summer many people go to holidays, factories are half-empty due to time off. It's wise to perform maintenance and retooling during that time as factory capacity is already reduced. When holidays end and September begins, new model year is produced until next summer.
Really need to dig in deep to clean it
Outie vs. innie
I'd be more interested to look at side repeater cameras. Those always glow red to me like terminator's eyes. I think Kim Tesla says it's just the housing reflection make it look red, but it seems to be on 24/7 every time I walk by it.
Can I just buy the foreskin part??
Make it where you can move it towards the driver side
Reflections don’t turn off
Some test prints. Hopefully will have something worth sharing tomorrow, pending screenshots from 2025 camera preview menus. https://preview.redd.it/4zgk43ky9r1e1.png?width=2458&format=png&auto=webp&s=fe43e8cdb991b78b163a2565434d655de80307dd
I’m thinking let’s less direct light into the lens.
Looks great! Can't wait to see. Will you share the STL file? I can do some good testing for you as winter is fast approaching
Will definitely share an STL! Also, tomorrow is going to be rain here so will test this version I have installed now. https://preview.redd.it/sbyvlehzer1e1.png?width=2458&format=png&auto=webp&s=51c047ab2c4d3aa26c8b07ed140b7a3e881413c2
You have an stl?
dyson blower
Tesla hater comment. Does it make sense that the camera more part / material is cheaper?
Looks good! Can wait to hear how it is!
I would also like an stl for this!
circumcised versus uncircumcised
2012 Model S camera often has rain beads. I have wondered about a shield or rainX
Less reflection from the license plate
How did you attach it? Definitely interested in printing this since the camera always gets blocked when it rains.
My wife’s 2018 M3 camera is soooo much better than my 2024 MY camera. I hope they fixed the imaging quality as well for 2025

That's a very interesting idea. Combine mechanical means to limit exposure to runoff, and add the ultrasonic cleaning... Why hasn't Tesla done this?
Probably not the material, just some other 3rd party camera maker comes with cheaper unit, easier to install (less man-hour),or lower bulk price. Its all tesla does. * No stalk less part, Less man-hour to install the steering. * Single center screen? no need to build 2 dashboard for left hand and right-hand drive, Probably a lot cheaper to produce simpler design in big number. * No rain sensor? No part to buy, no man-hour to install. * No ultrasonic sensor? Just stamp the bumper out without any other additional install, cheaper.
For a second i forgot what year is it and needed to double check.
But no washing? What about heating?
too much cost and complexity. A good hydrophobic coating and you're good to go regarding that. Plus the cover will shield some sunlight
More plastic... Yay!!!!
It just snaps on and is held by friction. No glue required.
Do you just say random stuff?
Can you retrofit?
Same. Shanghai M3 Standard August 2024.
RainX bonds to silicon dioxide (glass). It won't bond to plastic. If the lense is glass then yes. If it's poly carbonate or some other plastic then no.
It has foreskin now
Cries in 2022 version :(
I know your pain, I have been living with 2021 MYLR for over 3 years, watching newer builds getting all those nice bells and whistles until I upgraded to 2024 MYLR!
circumcised vs uncircumcised
its not *all* tesla does, it's just all that terminally online people read and whine about. They literally just improved almost every aspect of the model 3 from the suspension to ambient lighting and added ventilated seats and a whole rear screen, but yall won't stop bitching about superfluous parts.

Not on the "2025" US October 2024 build Highland either
An STL for Christmas perhaps? :) How do I keep track of this (possibly) great invention of yours?
I hope much earlier -I printed over 20 prototype versions just today. No rain yet to test. I will create a post at r/teslamotors and r/TeslaModelY and comment with a link here. Also, it's not an invention of mine, barely a knock-off retrofit attempt :)
My 07/2024 build Model S has a similar (but not identical) build to the 2025 update: [https://imgur.com/a/r4pKNYQ](https://imgur.com/a/r4pKNYQ)
Butt butt butttt panel gaps 😂😂😂💀
It is weird to be bitching about the car you own knowing it won’t change. Stalk? Lulz. No thanks. But U can always sell it and get something cool like a Kia or f150. Or do you not even own one.
well, its not a bad thing, its what keeps Tesla ahead of the competition. they just optimize their product for lower production cost. Most companies does this to certain degree, but only tesla is doing this at the expense of customer usability. Speaking of superfluous part, i would love to delete ambient lighting for some stalks and heads up display.
Nah, not about bitching, just explaining how production optimism works. its weird that you defend inferior product, since tesla actually hear the customer and upgraded model 3 interior. they wants to sell us things we ask for. i bet Elon will really notice you just by this comment.
They are going with the un- circumcised camera look, this makes perfect sense in current political environment. Sad to say
Or just use ceramic coating every month in the rainy season.
Looks like it only works with water, would love to see if it can handle anything thicker like mud. However 99.9% of the time it's just rain or condensation accumulation anyhow. Could be an interesting feature needed for robotaxis.
Be looking like a clit lol

I would love to get the STL for this when it's ready! Thanks so much for modeling this!!
Reduces drag by 0,006%
If only they had been able to know that rain and dirt would be present this could problem could have been avoided 😂
the rainy season isn't the problem, it's 4-6 months of salted roads we have here in Norway. Ceramic coating helps a bit, not a lot. Makes it much easier to clean off, but it still gets absolutely covered.
Yeah would need an actual washer then to remove salt.
Is the lens still plastic or glass like on the S and X?
I want the file too…
They uncircumcised the rear camera 😂
A similar enclosure can be easily 3d printed btw
Yup: https://imgur.com/a/8XAex3H Ever since I installed it the roads have been dry, so haven’t gotten to test properly yet.
Very cool! Is it powered by aux connection and reservoir in the pocket? Any more photos of your install, how it's triggered?
Yes, yes, Bluetooth remote. This is the kit. https://schmutzoff.com/install/
I might have some for you, how do I upload multiple photos?

For what it's worth - was feeling a bit left out and designed a model for my 2023 MYP. Instead of going the hard plastics route I decided to design mine using TPU in mind. This allowed for a tight fit without worrying about potentially scratching my lens. As you noted, I have not seen any images in the wild from 2025 models in their camera preview mode. That said, I kept iterating on my model until there was no visible interference in the preview view. If anyone cares to test this model out - have at it - I make no promises that this will do anything to improve your life and assume no liability if it does the oppositehttps://makerworld.com/en/models/883040 https://preview.redd.it/7gsox09y027e1.png?width=945&format=png&auto=webp&s=3a0d492f4fc32f9528f4f1665d76609a7afa179f
