Where is the front bumper camera? All prototypes are covered on the front, not sure if that implies anything?

Dr_Procrastinator 2024-11-08 15:05

Is the front camera in the room with us?

scherer326 2024-11-08 15:13

I am hoping that if the next model y does indeed come with a front camera that maybe Tesla will make it available to be installed via service centers to prior models (as long as they have the compatible software to use it)

Magerekwark 2024-11-08 15:22

Did you even watch the vid? They zoom in on it

vwdave 2024-11-08 15:22

The Highland model 3 also had a camera when the prototype was spotted…

NutzPup 2024-11-08 15:25

Yup. And where is it now? Nowhere, that's where.

DuneProphecy 2024-11-08 15:29

Juniper will be the goat, people taking Model Y deliveries right now are crazy

JohnTeaGuy 2024-11-08 15:29

Here we go again 🙄

[deleted] 2024-11-08 15:55

Wait till the $7500 credit goes away

Fire69 2024-11-08 16:04

Software isn't so much an issue. It needs the wiring and connection on the computer.

psykedeliq 2024-11-08 16:04

As someone on the fence, considering the 0% 4 year with FSD deal in Canada….. point taken

Fire69 2024-11-08 16:05

They're going to need it for the cybertaxi to work.

[deleted] 2024-11-08 16:09

If a front bumper camera is necessary for true FSD, then idk what everyone else with current hardware is going to do.

scherer326 2024-11-08 16:25

Makes sense but maybe it's doable with at least the 2024 models

[deleted] 2024-11-08 16:26

Pretty sure they use the front cameras to train the model to calculate distance. After training they are not needed. Car knows how far it actually is by looking at other cameras and comparing to what it learned when it had the bumper camera. Just like how we see lidar equipped engineering cars sometimes.

I think so. Yes they had it on 3 prototype and removed it but CT was released after 3 and has it. I'm guessing they wanted to experiment with one model first and now they can mass roll out. Kind of makes sense why the new yokes and steering wheels have the camera button (like CT).

[deleted] 2024-11-08 16:39

Why would they need it?

anothertechie 2024-11-08 16:45

If the car is off, can’t safely move forward if there’s a small kid or object in front

armykcz 2024-11-08 17:08

I think fron cam will be on standart on AI5 suite. Which I do no think is coming with Juniper

DekkuRen 2024-11-08 17:18

*silently pans to the far left corner of the room* *slowly nods*

IOnlyAskForGold 2024-11-08 17:18

So we’re doing this again, huh….

EljayDude 2024-11-08 17:31

Yeah ideally you would give it six months after the new model. So if you need a car now that's kind of a long time to wait.

VideoGameJumanji 2024-11-08 17:38

If the car is off and moving? Lmao

VideoGameJumanji 2024-11-08 17:39

According to nobody

There are no unused camera connectors on currently shipped HW4: https://x.com/greentheonly/status/1686146094160359424

Fire69 2024-11-08 17:47

Sure, nobody. Tesla just installed one on their Cybercab for funsies...

tangosukka69 2024-11-08 17:54

not sure how accurate this is, but i asked a service technician last year when i got my 2023 model x about retrofitting the car with a front camera when they come out and he said they are being made to easily be able to add front camera to existing builds that don't have them once available.

Aminoboi 2024-11-08 18:02

What could be possibly worth the ~$18k in savings I just got by getting a 2024?

ycarel 2024-11-08 18:29

I have the front camera in the Bolt and it is fantastic

[deleted] 2024-11-08 18:33

B1tN1nja 2024-11-08 18:39

Generally speaking the service centers know exactly as much as we do: not shit.

[deleted] 2024-11-08 18:59

USS is still better for a computer. My CT doesn't even use vision and even if it did for the front camera, it still won't work as well as USS. Knowing Tesla, they won't add camera for fsd only like the person I originally responded to stated.

Suitable_Switch5242 2024-11-08 19:10

If the car *was* off, then turned on, it doesn't know what is in front of its bumper. It can remember what was there when it parked, but it doesn't know if an obstacle or child is now there in the absence of sensors or cameras to directly check.

GoSh4rks 2024-11-08 19:29

I don't believe that it would be necessary for consumer vehicle FSD, but more for parking and stuff like that. Robotaxi might benefit.

VideoGameJumanji 2024-11-08 19:43

That doesn't really mean anything, current FSD uses the standard setup across all their cars and they haven't commented at all in regards to that camera.

Mav3005 2024-11-08 19:52

I think Tesla would sooner you buy a new Tesla than offer retrofitting.

Cimexus 2024-11-08 20:10

Well that’s just a US thing. In the rest of the world I think a lot of people are waiting for Juniper. I have a new Highland M3 but probably would have gone for the Y if it had had the same updates as the 3 did. Who knows maybe I’ll trade it in for the refresh Y once it’s out and had a while to mature/iron out manufacturing issues (although financially that’s not a very smart thing to do). Still hoping it will come with some other sweetener like a substantially longer range, or V2L, or something like that.

reddit-set-go-2025 2024-11-08 20:32

Same annoying door handles... Ha

1960vegan 2024-11-08 20:36

Came here to say that

Fire69 2024-11-08 21:02

Musk is notorious for removing every part that isn't absolutely needed. Why would he add that camera then? Every Tesla on the road now has a blind spot in front.

feurie 2024-11-08 21:19

Do you get out of your car to check in front of the bumper every time you put it in drive?

feurie 2024-11-08 21:19

Sure its better. But drivers have been driving without cameras there for... ever.

Suitable_Switch5242 2024-11-08 21:25

No. Usually I find that I start my journey outside of the car, and then get into the car to drive. So I don't generally get in the car, then get back out to check, then get back inside to drive. I also have additional senses and can take note of things like children running around in the vicinity of the vehicle before I get in. If someone else left an Amazon box or something in front of my car and I didn't specifically check for it, I might notice the sound of it dragging when I start moving. And despite all of that, some human drivers do still have accidents in these scenarios: https://www.kidsandcars.org/frontovers/facts I wouldn't trust a fully autonomous Tesla with no sensors in its front bumper to handle those situations to an acceptable degree.

PrudeHawkeye 2024-11-08 22:03

Yes. It's right next to the HUD

Buffalo-2023 2024-11-09 00:09

What kind of operation do they think they're running?

karaknwfp 2024-11-09 00:29

The whole lineup S 3 XY needs front bumper camera

SnooDogs7747 2024-11-09 00:55

I'm guessing you have a 2024

Life_Connection420 2024-11-09 00:59

I even saw one with four wheels

Darkelement 2024-11-09 01:56

Is it possible that the reason it’s spotted on both highland and juniper prototypes that it’s nice for testing but not needed in production? Highland didn’t ship with one, no word on if juniper or the cybercab will ship with one. Does make sense that it isn’t needed, because they had model Y’s at the robo event driving around without supervision.

ConsiderationSea56 2024-11-09 02:06

Not true

ConsiderationSea56 2024-11-09 02:07

Why not wait for the kid to move or just reverse if there is an object? Or if it is boxed in it doesn't move and just alerts? Easy already solved problems

Otto_the_Autopilot 2024-11-09 02:33

I ran over a ball the other day. My kid left it in front of the car and I couldn't see it. A bumper cam would have seen it.

Otto_the_Autopilot 2024-11-09 02:35

No and I ran over a basketball because I didn't.

aBetterAlmore 2024-11-09 03:59

> I'm guessing they wanted to experiment with one model first Experiment what? They’re adding a camera, not a nuclear reactor.

[deleted] 2024-11-09 05:10

FSD, AP, nothing has been coded to use the front camera. In fact, CT still doesn't use bumper camera for FSD. So experiment adding it to one vehicle, program the software to use it, and then roll out to others if it has benefits from software perspective

aBetterAlmore 2024-11-09 05:44

You don’t design and manufacture a vehicle produced in the tens or hundred of thousands a year, just to then do some basic testing to see if that hardware is useful or not. If they did that, that would make them amateurs at best, incompetent at worst. And nothing points to Tesla engineering being incompetent or amateurs.

VideoGameJumanji 2024-11-09 05:57

It's absolutely not a blind spot lmao

Fire69 2024-11-09 08:35

Explain to me how a camera at the top of your windshield can see a curb 10" in front of your bumber.... It's pretty well known there's at least a one foot blind spot. You can believe it however hard you want, that doesn't make it so. vadikcoma 2024-11-09 11:40

Who needs that camera anyway. Tell us that Juniper was spotted with stalks

[deleted] 2024-11-09 13:49

Did they remember the wiper for it this time?

VideoGameJumanji 2024-11-09 20:46

>You can believe it however hard you want, that doesn't make it so  Dude relax lol, use that on your own unfounded logic. Your car sees things as they approach them, curbs don't immediately spawn in front of your "bumber"

PeperoneCrusco 2024-11-10 00:07

They are removing the stalks to save 50$, do not expect additional cameras

General_Put_8388 2024-11-10 00:16

wym

CommonSense___ 2024-11-10 16:28

Model Y is taller and has a bigger Blindspot than the model 3 so I think it might stay .

KimJongHealyRae 2024-11-12 13:29

40 Dollars, 40 frickin dollars, If someone is buying a car worth 30-40-50 thousand. 40$ is nothing, I would happily absorb the cost as a consumer, add the cost on my end if they want more margin. It's one of the worst decisions they ever made, apart from getting rid of stalks and radar. Even if it cost $500-1000 to add parking sensors, rain sensor, radar, and stalks, I would happily pay it. Crazy cost cutting nonsense.

jonnybravo76 2024-11-12 19:20

What was that silver car around the 50 second mark?

[deleted] 2024-11-13 13:43

Human beings can’t see front bumper while driving, why does Tesla need to see from that angle?

Ok_Giraffe8865 2024-11-13 17:25

Given the aerodynamics for the car, the height of the windshield camera, there is only a little area near the bumper that is blind at any one point in time. But factor in time, and that small area that is blind this second was not a second earlier, a little math from when the area was visible and how much distance was traveled, and you have a map of your surroundings. You need front vision when moving forward so you should have a good map as you move forward.

DependentMountain597 2024-11-16 20:01

Highland also had a camera on the first images on the Tesla site but they removed it
