From the article: The Tesla Model Y continues to dominate California’s vehicle market. Through the first three quarters of the year, the electric SUV has maintained its position as the best-selling car in the state. According to the latest figures published in the California New Car Dealers Association (CNCDA), the Model Y has seen 105,693 registrations from January to September, significantly outpacing competitors like the Toyota RAV4 (49,810 registrations) and the Honda CR-V (37,759 registrations) in the light truck category. The Model 3 meanwhile is also significantly ahead of its competitors in the ‘near luxury cars’ segment, with 37,219 registrations year-to-date, enough for a 43.4% market share in that segment. When it comes to overall sales in the passenger car segment, the Model 3 sits third, less than 3,000 registrations behind the Toyota Camry (40,025) and Honda Civic (40,741). The Model 3 is also the second best-selling EV through September. Not to be left out, the Model S is the best seller in the ‘luxury and high end sports cars’ segment with 3,046 registrations and a 9.4% market share. The Model X is second best-seller in the ‘luxury mid size SUV segment with 7,314 registrations through the first nine months of the year.

But reddit told me tesla was dead in it's spiritual home of california.

1988rx7T2 2024-10-31 11:23

But but Elon bad! Nobody buys Teslas anymore!

What a seriously low IQ take.  There are people in this world, many of them, that are both in the market for a new vehicle and can afford a Tesla, but choose not to because of his actions. To deny this is to deny reality. Hooray that Tesla continues to have the customers they do. But they could be doing better.

mailboy11 2024-10-31 12:34

I'll only buy and recommend Tesla to acquaintances because of haters. Tesla is genuinely great and Elon is hated because of the media

SpicyWongTong 2024-10-31 12:44

I understand being upset about his politics or how hard he goes at his employees, but why do people care about his relationship/non-relationship with his kids? I’m genuinely wondering if I’m like insensitive or something because I don’t care at all about how he is as a father or spouse, etc.

etangey52 2024-10-31 12:46

If you’re on the market for an EV, Tesla makes the best one. Bar none. If you’re stupid enough to pay more for less because your hero switched sides…. Lol

1988rx7T2 2024-10-31 12:46

Do you think other CEOs are somehow not scumbags?

IAmInTheBasement 2024-10-31 12:51

Some people stopped buying Chick Fillet. Some people never changed. The point being you want to cast your net as wide as possible. Trust me, I know the car's superior. Some people avoid all Nestle products because of their stance on water rights around the world. Some people won't buy Nike because of how and where they manufacture their goods. How does this not make sense to you?

fifichanx 2024-10-31 13:07

Yay! Awesome results despite of all the nay sayers.

KamikazeSting 2024-10-31 13:39

Elon is hated because of his mouth. Still makes great cars though.

Digitalabia 2024-10-31 14:02

I'm most surprised by the S/X sales numbers. I thought those models were more or less dead.

BubblegumTitanium 2024-10-31 14:17

a tesla model s plaid is like 80k, much cheaper than the lucid air saphire (even though the saphire is crazier)

prestodigitarium 2024-10-31 14:19

They're just saying that they think that's a stupid thing to do, and the original person you responded to was saying that it's a massively overestimated effect here on Reddit. No one is saying that it doesn't happen at all.

Lovevas 2024-10-31 14:24

Reverse reddit again, lol

prestodigitarium 2024-10-31 14:27

I've been an investor in Tesla since pre-Model S, so I've been following Elon for a while now, iirc he has always said the stuff he says, he's always made the same off-color jokes, etc, but there was a really stark turn in the media over the past few years, when they started excerpting and amplifying the bits that can make him look bad, and doing it really regularly. Probably partly because he just became more interesting to normal people because he became so rich/influential/successful, and it gets those rage clicks, but I also think it's likely that he pissed off some powerful people. And with that media coverage came a lot of the negative sentiment here, before that, he was really beloved here for what he was trying to do.

MainSailFreedom 2024-10-31 14:36

Isn’t the sapphire 250k? I figured the top Model S competitors would be the Audi etron and Mercedes EQS

darveesh 2024-10-31 14:44

Love it ! 😁

CAPSLOCKAFFILIATE 2024-10-31 15:12

>muh democrazy >muh rocket man bad redditors with acute elon derangement syndrome have been seething nonstop since the compensation package passed

BubblegumTitanium 2024-10-31 15:13

yeah but they are close in terms of performance, its what I'd cross shop them with - not a lame audi etron lol

Vladiesh 2024-10-31 15:15

Choosing an inferior product that will objectively cause you to experience more difficulty instead of Tesla because Elon bad is unironically braindead.

IAmInTheBasement 2024-10-31 15:23

I understand that. And yet, here we are. People vote with their wallets. He is influencing that. That is bad leadership. CEO is doing this which are bad for business. The logic is that simple.

ChunkyThePotato 2024-10-31 15:23

The thing you don't seem to understand is this may be a very insignificant number of people who boycott for these reasons, and it's to some extent unavoidable for large companies to attract hate like that.

tangosukka69 2024-10-31 15:44

it's closer to 100k brand new, but you can but a 2021 for ~50k now.

angrytroll123 2024-10-31 16:22

> many of them Disagree. I bet most people don't know about his stupid antics or don't pay attention to it. The ones that do are just the loudest ones.

PlancheOSRS 2024-10-31 16:35

I want my Model Y juniper now Elon! 😡

ArtOfWarfare 2024-10-31 16:46

S and X are still profitable or else they’d be discontinued. Being profitable requires a certain level of sales (I think around 2K/month for those two.)

kenypowa 2024-10-31 16:46

Man. I thought everyone was embarrassed driving a Tesla. It's r/electricvehicles most upvoted post of all time.

twinbee 2024-10-31 16:50

> To deny this is to deny reality. And to deny that overwhelmingly most people just simply don't care about his politics, and also how he's gaining market share on the OTHER side of the political spectrum..... is also denying reality.

rustybeancake 2024-10-31 17:43

Ah yes, light trucks like a Rav 4, built on the Corolla platform.

MainSailFreedom 2024-10-31 17:49

The Eron I was referencing was the RS GT which even though I’m not an Audi fan looks incredible and is very performant.

JerryLeeDog 2024-10-31 18:06

Soon to be the most sold vehicle in the US I addition to China, Europe, Australia and the world.

HeyBeers 2024-10-31 18:10

I’m very proud to drive an American car sold by one of the most significant innovators in the modern world. To distinguish it from all of the same looking cars in parking lots, I have a subdued American 🇺🇸 flag license plate rim.

SchalaZeal01 2024-10-31 18:43

It's because he went against the oligarch take of controlling social media with censorship, by buying one to preserve it.

icaranumbioxy 2024-10-31 19:32

I don't agree with Elon's politics but I bought a Tesla this year because they make the best EV. They created the US charging standard...you'd be crazy to buy a non Tesla EV. Talk about being risky with your money...most people don't have that luxury and just want products that work.

He’s shifted publicly from those early days. The car / rocket stuff has always been ambitious and geeky and still holds appeal, but his “white knight of free speech” persona is full of contradictions. On one hand he calls himself a “free speech absolutist,” yet selectively censors content on X, especially when it criticizes him or his businesses or doesn’t align with advertisers or authoritarian regimes. That ain’t media, that’s him.

a_bagofholding 2024-10-31 20:40

I don't own a tesla but the way I look at things would be...should I support all the workers in this industry even if the guy at the front of it is a flaming arse? Why not! It's not like this guy is going away bankrupt if one fewer cars sell.

Defiant-Bunch-9917 2024-10-31 21:39

The media lies. Results do not lie.

Fancy_Load5502 2024-10-31 21:42

Elon said that a few years ago and I rolled my eyes. He was right.

JerryLeeDog 2024-10-31 21:47

I can tell people will be butthurt when Model Y outsells F150 this year because my comment got downvoted

zachary0816 2024-10-31 21:54

Yeah there’s a lot of people here complaining about the media and while there’s certainly problems with them. It’s not the Media that’s making his posts to Twitter.

caspar_milquetoast69 2024-10-31 22:03

that sub is a cesspool. avoid.

Mindless-Midnight726 2024-10-31 22:14

Tesla tech is great but their build quality and customer service is the worst I've ever seen. It all started with ordering a 2024 Model Y in Quicksilver. Delivery day came and we drove 2.5hrs one way to pick it up. Went over the vehicle and found around 8 paint chips. Delivery person said yeah we say that and it's a quick fix. If they saw it and it's a quick fix then why didn't they fix it before we drove 2.5hrs one way. Anyways I said I didn't want it and was told that is fine but we don't know when the next one is going to arrive and it will show up with chips as well. Once again I was told it was a quick fix. So I took delivery and they set up a service appointment to get it fixed. About 3 weeks later we drove again to drop it off for the service and was told it would take 4 to 5 days. They gave us a loaner and we were on our way back home. 5 day pass and we haven't heard from anyone. I chat in through their stupid app because nobody answers the phone only to be told it was going to be another week that they're running behind. Another week passes buy and crickets. Message in again and now I'm told the truth. They could not fix the chips so they completely stripped down the vehicle and repainted it and it didn't turn out very well so the stripped it down again and repainted again and it still doesn't look right. WTF? So now they said you can either keep it like it is or they can start they buy back process. I told them to start the buyback process. It has been 7 months of hell but we finally brought the vehicle back and signed it over to Tesla. Then it took 4 weeks for them to send me my refund of everything I had paid up until the drop off. Also as of this moment it's still not over because Tesla still has not paid off the lease. What a nightmare. Never again will I buy a Tesla. I'm sure they don't care but "F" them.

PersonalityLower9734 2024-10-31 23:33

Is it bad for business though? Tesla has no issues selling cars and their revenues aren't dropping. in fact the only time I hear people go on and on about how evil Musk is, is typically just reddit and the typical part of Twitter. It seems like the average person does not care. And truthfully many people actually agree with him as well and his antics despite how insane that is to a typical redditor.

prestodigitarium 2024-11-01 01:05

Do you read his posts directly or mostly read about the ones that the media picks up?

prestodigitarium 2024-11-01 01:06

Does he actually censor stuff? Idk, I don’t pay much attention to Twitter, generally seems like a net negative for humanity.

KSFL 2024-11-01 02:07

https://www.cncda.org/news/california-new-car-dealers-association-releases-q3-2024-auto-outlook-report/ “Tesla’s Model Y remains the top-selling car in California year-to-date, but the company’s sales continue to slip, losing 8.5 percent market share compared to last year. This marks a full year of registration declines for Tesla in California, leaving the “alternative powertrain door” open for traditional automakers. Manufacturers and dealers have embraced this shift, expanding their share of battery electric vehicle (BEV) sales to 40.2 percent as consumers increasingly turn to exciting, new electric vehicle (EV) options.”

Altruistic_Aerie4758 2024-11-01 03:36

That is fine as long as you realize the word "now" to Elon means anything from 1 minute from now to as far out as the next Century. Elon makes a great car, but his accuracy on timelines could use some improvement.

Rare_Polnareff 2024-11-01 03:50

Its objectively a very good car

zachary0816 2024-11-01 04:52

For the sake of argument I decided to visit his account. His most recent post said the following: >The Woke Mind Virus is not just real, but extremely quantifiable! Need I say more?

dicentrax 2024-11-01 06:05

You are not wrong

Honest_Science 2024-11-01 06:11

What kind of barbarians still buy Tesla in California, strange.

KamikazeSting 2024-11-01 07:48

Yep. He censored critics of Erdogan before the Turkish elections. He says he didn’t have a choice, as non-compliance would have resulted in Twitter being blocked entirely in Turkey, so he complied, contradicting his stance as a ‘free speech absolutist‘.

prestodigitarium 2024-11-01 11:33

Ah, what about within jurisdictions that protect free speech?

[deleted] 2024-11-01 15:19

Now that model y’s aren’t $70k anymore; its appealing to a lot of people

[deleted] 2024-11-01 15:20

Classic programmer mentality

cloudsofgrey 2024-11-01 17:25

Many very high income people in California that do not have to opt for the most affordable models. The Model S Plaid and Model X Plaid are huge steps up in performance and perceived luxury.

AllCommiesRFascists 2024-11-01 23:46

Sane ones

ColdAsHeaven 2024-11-02 04:08

Elon is bad. But I'm not going to intentionally gimp myself and buy a worse product for the same price. That's dumb. Tesla has the EV world on lock. Until everyone else can catch up or if you're rich enough to buy a Lucid or Porsche EV, absolutely no good reason to buy the other EV's being made over a 3 or Y

1988rx7T2 2024-11-02 11:44

You can hate the guy and value the work of people at Tesla, many of which probably hate him too

clow222 2024-11-02 21:06

Could you elaborate on an actual Reason "Elon is bad" outside of him not aligning with you politically (that's the point of democracy). Because from the way I see it, he's done far more good for society as a whole than he has "bad". People are allowed to voice their political opinions, it's what makes a democracy a democracy regardless if you agree. Doesn't make them bad

1ml3g10n 2024-11-02 21:35

According to the article tesla sales lost 8.5% compared last year.

FirstOfficerObvious 2024-11-03 22:36

Wif just bought a new Y. She’s a Super lib and an Elon hater. She was so embarrassed to tell me about buying it. I was like, who cares? Drive what you want.

dtpearson 2024-11-03 23:57

The 8.5% drop is MARKET SHARE. When you make up for example 95% of EVs sold when there were very few EV models and then every other carmaker releases hundreds of different models and they take 8% off you leaving you with a measly "only" 87%, you are not really loosing are you.

1ml3g10n 2024-11-04 01:51

Yes it’s, within a year Tesla lost nearly 9% of their sales. I hope Elon keeps up with his shenanigans and in less than a decade Tesla will be the new blackberry. As a consumer myself, I bought a brand new RAv4 Prime over model Y, even though it cost me more to buy the Prime than the Model Y.
