From the article: Tesla is reportedly set to kick off trial production of the refreshed Model Y at Giga Shanghai this week. According to report from China, the automaker will begin production of ‘Project Juniper’ as soon as October 22, 2024. Tesla has been working on refreshing the Model Y, the world’s best-selling car that is approaching five years old already, for well over a year. The refresh, codenamed ‘Project Juniper,’ is expected to bring many of the same updates that Tesla introduced with the refresh of the Model 3, which first launched out of Giga Shanghai late last year. In the lead up to its release, Tesla has been testing camouflaged prototypes on public roads in California, and more recently in Spain. While those test vehicles have been covered in an attempt to hide what exterior updates might be coming with the refresh, there has been some leaked photos that show the rear-end of the Model Y could be in for a significant design change. Tesla has said on more than one occasion that they have no plans to release the new Model Y this year, and it looks like that is accurate, but it might not be far behind that schedule.

Coreldan 2024-10-21 14:35

Funny. I was asking the salesman if theres anything substantial known cos there are "signs in the air for a refresh for Y as well" and he was like "naah no signs in the air. Was 7 years for 3, so we may be years off, so just buy this current Y!" Bought a M3 Highland instead :P

MountainManGuy 2024-10-21 14:39

Typical salesman crap. You can't really trust anything they say. There are definitely "signs in the air" for a new Y, but with no release date in sight there's no point in waiting if you need a car now. If you don't need the space the Y has, the Model 3 is probably the better choice anyways. It's incredibly efficient.

iamblueguy 2024-10-21 14:40

Asking that to a sales rep is the same as asking if theirs or the competition is better lol.

Professional_Dig8124 2024-10-21 14:45

What else did you expect them to say, they are in the business of making sales. This sort of question is more for the community and piecing together leaks. Model Y is facing a lot more competition, especially in China. Model 3 had a lot of time without any actual competition so they were able to have a bigger gap between refreshes but Model Y, their most important product, is now facing fierce competition on all fronts, from EU to Chinese manufacturers so they cant wait 4+ years to refresh their Model Y (no matter how many internal tweaks they do) as they risk losing their edge on their best selling vehicle.

Coreldan 2024-10-21 14:48

Well, some salesmen are more honest (not many tho). I currently drive a Toyota and when I finally moved to a place where I can charge at home, I told "my dealer" who sold me the last few cars that now that I can charge at home, you can start pitching me the Bz4x. He probably couldve sold me on the spot. Instead he said that it's not public info yet, but he is going abroad in december where Toyota will show the next toyota ev (smaller than the Bz4x) to the sales reps. He won't be able to show pictures in december yet, but he can at least describe the car to me etc. Besides, even if he wanted to lean me towards getting the Y now, he couldve at least not straight up lied about there being no signs in the air for Y getting refreshed too. I did lead with "I suppose theres no official info..." so the discussion was more on a hypothetical level anyways.

feurie 2024-10-21 14:56

What? As if the sales people know secrets that no one else know.

feurie 2024-10-21 14:57

Their job is to sell cars. They don’t hang out on forums all day looking at rumors. How is that crap? There’s no announcement of the refresh or even its existence. What are they supposed to do?

feurie 2024-10-21 15:02

lol what’s a “sign in the air”? They don’t know any more than we do. If a Toyota salesperson is able to sell you a BZ4X on the spot then that’s kind of problem right there. And cool, he’s going to see some press of new EV models which may or may not come out in some number of years. The Tesla rep doesn’t have an equivalent thing because they try not to leak things and have people keep waiting. Other OEMs do that for EVs because they don’t have anything competitive now and want you to wait until they get their shit together.

Brutaka1 2024-10-21 15:03

That's because Tesla folks can't say anything, even if they may or may not be educated on the matter.

ChunkyThePotato 2024-10-21 15:03

You say that with the assumption that he knows anything about the Y refresh. It's entirely possible that he doesn't. There's almost zero chance that Tesla told sales reps information about it, and there's a decent chance that this particular sales rep isn't stalking forums like this to keep up with leaks.

0ptimusPayne 2024-10-21 15:06

Im hoping they add more to the Y refresh outside of checking the boxes the 3 got. It really deserves getting V2L/powershare features like the cyber truck and some of its competitors already have.

Cantthinkofaname282 2024-10-21 15:07

They would be fired if they told everyone to not buy and wait for the refresh

cadium 2024-10-21 15:16

From the side the 3 looks exactly the same and at quick glances they look exactly the same. Usually manufacturers change more to differentiate the product.

TigglyWiggly95 2024-10-21 15:22

I hope they make a six seater version

shaneucf 2024-10-21 15:32

"salesman"...

gnoxy 2024-10-21 15:38

He is probably not wrong. The Y is 5 years old. Might take 2 years before you can get an order delivered.

gnoxy 2024-10-21 15:38

Porsche enters the chat.

MountainManGuy 2024-10-21 15:45

Sounds like you've never purchased a car before. A car salesman's job is to sell cars. They aren't ever going to tell you to wait, because they want you to buy a car today, not tomorrow. This has nothing to do with hanging out online looking at forums.

tesla-info 2024-10-21 15:54

A man in a Chinese pub told another man who put it on X which was read by a website and then copied by another website site and then put on Reddit more than once today. Even the words start as fact and then in the body use words such as “may” and “as early as”. Meanwhile Tesla are desperate to beat 2023 numbers and are just as likely to go all out in an end of year push to do that which doesn’t typically mean stopping a production line.

UnSCo 2024-10-21 15:55

I have a feeling it will be mostly all the same as the 3 refresh. A quick theory I have is that Cybertruck is being used to “test” cutting edge features (yes, know V2L isn’t “cutting edge”) along with steer-by-wire and such. Highland and Juniper are putting 3/Y on par with refreshed S/X from a few years ago. Then, within a year or two later, Model S will get hit with a refresh that includes steer-by-wire, V2L, 48V, etc. V2L seems like the only thing I could see coming to Model Y though, perhaps maybe a frunk that’s been designed to function as a cooler? Edit: By “cooler” I mean a documented area (likely the frunk) you can put ice and stuff into, just like the Cybertruck’s underbed area and the Lightning’s frunk. Rivian has it too I believe.

And outside of the 911 all their cars change significantly from generation to generation.

THIESN123 2024-10-21 16:43

If I was gonna release a refreshed product, I wouldn't tell people till it was ready either. Otherwise sales will drop with people waiting

PeterLegend626 2024-10-21 16:52

Summer 2025 release in the USA then? Hmmm

lowspeed 2024-10-21 16:53

> which doesn’t typically mean stopping a production line. It's a fact that in 2025 we'll see a refresh. They have to retool a line for that.

lowspeed 2024-10-21 16:55

2+2+2? Did you see how cramped the version going to the UK is?

TigglyWiggly95 2024-10-21 16:56

No, I haven't. You got a link? I have seen the seven seater in the US. Rumor was in China they were building a bigger version.

lowspeed 2024-10-21 17:05

Actually it's just a 3rd row. but same concept... https://youtu.be/NWyERSc04N8

y-c-c 2024-10-21 17:05

Does it mean it will be stalkless just like the Model 3? Personally that's kind of a dealbreaker for me…

woj666 2024-10-21 17:08

I'm hoping for more and better cameras and HW5/AI5 or whatever they call it.

DevinOlsen 2024-10-21 17:08

Honestly just do an overnight test drive with the new model 3 and you'll see the stalkless design complaints are really overblown. I have a 2024 Model 3 and do not miss stalks at all, it's second nature to me.

Sir_Diggins 2024-10-21 18:02

Did a test drive of the new 3… and then went and bought a y. The stalks weren’t the only thing I hated, but they were a big one. I’m glad it works for you though, seems like an otherwise nice car.

BikebutnotBeast 2024-10-21 18:13

Built in cooler, hell no, too many liable issues and misuse for a mass production manufacturer to bother when 3rd party options work reliably. I would think a watertight aux/outlet in the frunk should happen though.

RegularRandomZ 2024-10-21 18:15

If Juniper is bumping Model Y up to Model 3 levels while leveraging the same components and supply chains, I doubt V2L would be included as that implies an updated power electronics board \[presumably best grouped with that future 800V / 48V / updated harness / steer-by-wire update / bumper camera?\]. Still, with the accelerated plans for new models blending current and next gen features, perhaps we'll see some of that sooner rather than later? Which might be good given Austin and Berlin are still well below capacity \[not that Model S/X production numbers couldn't use a bump as well\].

PixelizedTed 2024-10-21 18:22

Tesla will do whatever features that gets them the most sales while not compromising production costs. As much as us nerds would love V2L PowerShare or the other fancy gadgets from CT, those are not high margin sales driving features, and by and large most people don’t care, so i highly doubt they will do anything more than a refinement update like the model 3.

rklaehn 2024-10-21 18:25

The point of a 6 or 7 seater model Y is not to offer 7 comfortable seats for adults - that's impossible given the size and shape of the vehicle. The point is to offer something for large families with 2 extra seats for kids or for adults for very short distances. And for that it is a great car.

Uricashaw 2024-10-21 18:32

I’d rather not have serial number 1 so I would be thinking the opposite.

THIESN123 2024-10-21 18:35

I agree. But we aren't majority.

UnSCo 2024-10-21 18:41

I would at least like to see 120V plug ports on the Model Y, and even a mid-gen refresh for S/X and even 3 to include 120V ports. I tailgate for college football in my Model X and my god it is such a bottleneck not having 120V ports. Correct me if I’m wrong but V2L is much different than some 120/240V ports. I do agree with you though, but I would bet that V2L/steer by wire/perhaps even rear-wheel steering is all coming to Model S/X in the next major refresh. Depending on the costs and capability, it may or may not ever be offered on Model 3/Y.

UnSCo 2024-10-21 18:43

When I say “cooler” by the way I mean just a place you can put ice and drinks in, not some complicated electronic cooler. I’ll update my comment to mention that. Think we’re on the same page though!

IAmAnAnonymousCoward 2024-10-21 18:53

Steer by wire would be dope.

dtpearson 2024-10-21 19:13

In my experience sales reps for Tesla are given absolutely zero extra info about new vehicles until public release. Any info they have, they get from the same online sources as us. I found talking to Tesla sales staff about the upcoming Highland release weeks before the reveal that most knew significantly LESS about it than I did, it was only the nerds among them that did the same online research that I did that knew anything. Same for other manufacturers. I remember a significant disagreement I had with a Subaru sales agent (dealer principal too) about weather an upcoming WRX was moving from a 2.0L to a 2.5L engine which was almost 100% confirmed at that stage, and he basically told me that I didn't know what I was talking about as "all WRXs are 2.0L"

RegularRandomZ 2024-10-21 19:17

Outlets would be great, some would like a bumper camera too. Given the Model 3/Y can already 'steer itself' \[for FSD\], maybe steer-by-wire isn't justifiable.

dtpearson 2024-10-21 19:22

I am 4 months into Highland M3P ownership and I still HATE the buttons. You can probably get used to them if its the only car you ever drive, but I move from my Highland to my wifes Y (and other work vehicles) all the time, and its just so confusing to swap back and forth all the time. And nobody can make the argument that they work on a roundabout. Even when I get used to them eventually, its going to make it harder to drive other vehicles.

kenji_wing 2024-10-21 19:35

Agreed.. I have a VIN 18k model y and it has issues for sure

BikebutnotBeast 2024-10-21 19:45

Yeah! I mean builtins are a thing but rare only like in the Rolls, Maybach, S classes. A watertight insulated frunk would be a pretty great option Tesla!

PepegaQuen 2024-10-21 19:51

Also known as Osborne Effect.

UnSCo 2024-10-21 20:11

Tesla sells a Cybertruck cooler that’s a whopping $700, and the damn thing isn’t even electric…

hoang51 2024-10-21 20:17

HW5/AI5 is probably a couple of years away, and those are most likely going into the Cybercab first...

dzh 2024-10-21 20:43

You'll be able to buy both for a while too

dzh 2024-10-21 20:44

> V2L Just enabling always-on cig ports without sentry or camp mode via software update would go such a long way.

dzh 2024-10-21 20:47

V2L is 120/240v ports V2G or V2H is whole different beast

dzh 2024-10-21 20:48

Well you already have very sophisticated heat pump system, adding a cooler would be somewhat easy. (I don't need one tho, even I do go camping few times a year).

dzh 2024-10-21 20:49

I hear quite often v2l being a factor

angrytroll123 2024-10-21 21:07

Why not get the 3rd party stalks?

SmooK_LV 2024-10-21 21:22

You can retrofit normal stalks for 200-400eur. Just add that to the cost of new car.

SmooK_LV 2024-10-21 21:24

Quick AliExpress search shows original looking stalks available for purchase that you can install yourself.

y-c-c 2024-10-21 21:46

Wait, really? Is that an official Tesla thing? Otherwise I’m not sure how a third part could do that.

woj666 2024-10-21 22:04

A quick Google says second half of 2025 or late 2025.

DuneProphecy 2024-10-21 23:22

I knew this was coming out soon.

DuneProphecy 2024-10-21 23:23

Facts. Every Tesla vehicle needs powershare.

DuneProphecy 2024-10-21 23:24

They sell a lot more Ys than 3s. Y will get light bar and other features IMO. Maybe even a bigger battery.

FriendShapedRMT 2024-10-21 23:27

I hope they will improve the turning radius.

Ok-Historian7188 2024-10-21 23:33

Please Tesla add a black headliner instead of the gray.

MisterBumpingston 2024-10-22 00:08

It sucks that V2L is neglected by Tesla as it’s found in every Korean and Chinese EV except the very cheapest. In Australia the V2G trials were done using Japanese EVs, but to be fair V2G is only supported by CHadeMO standard.

blasianbait 2024-10-22 00:41

Looks sharp

teefj 2024-10-22 01:19

About how many miles would that allow for?

Pandaboy007 2024-10-22 02:52

Hopefully it will have Starlink mobile Mini as a sales point. Stop paying for cell bs 3g.

sm00thArsenal 2024-10-22 03:01

tbf there is a decent difference between a facelift like this and the first gen Model Y. Yes, there will be some issues with the first cars, but i'd be surprised if it was anything more than minor. At least with the China built ones.

jnads 2024-10-22 03:01

There's quite a free FSD transfer people that want to go from a 3 to a Y and have been waiting for Juniper refresh.

BigPowerPoint 2024-10-22 04:14

What is V2L?

Crimguy 2024-10-22 05:02

These cars are like video games. Wait for the 1.01 update.

Every_Tap8117 2024-10-22 07:43

When is someone going to leak a photo of the entire car (or parts) with no camo?

chigganometry 2024-10-22 08:02

Beginner question, but why does every new Tesla launch in China first?

YellowUnited8741 2024-10-22 09:20

Underrated request. I love a black headliner and hate a gray one with a black interior. One of the reasons I went for white interior was the stupid gray headliner.

Ok_Priority458 2024-10-22 10:52

I'd rather not have the u.s. build ones ...in terms of overall quality control.

Substantial-Love7943 2024-10-22 11:23

So they making most teslas now in china? What happened to Cali and American made cars lol

G00R00 2024-10-22 11:23

Hope they'll also produce from Berlin, more EU bonuses

Chreutz 2024-10-22 11:27

Short for Vehicle To Load, basically having AC outlets with multi-kW capability.

dancingjake 2024-10-22 11:56

How is this a fact?

Every_Tap8117 2024-10-22 14:05

Love of god please....I dont mine the material but hate the color of the grey one

lowspeed 2024-10-22 14:07

because it is.

dancingjake 2024-10-22 14:11

Solid argument, and that’s a fact.

SPACEYMOOTANT 2024-10-22 15:38

Expect to see legions of Model Y's on sale a month or two before the Juniper is released. There will be some very good deals around and I suspect Tesla may have the best ones to get rid of their model Y stock - when the time comes. I'm not sure I would buy the current model Y. I reckon it does need some work.

gnoxy 2024-10-22 18:36

The Macan looks like it did when it first came out in 2014. Other than the runny egg headlights so does the Cayenne.

dtpearson 2024-10-22 22:44

> retrofit They are not a super simple end user fit. Quite a bit of the dash and steering column (including the steering wheel and airbag) has to be disassembled to add the stalks. It's certainly not impossible for a normal person to get it done, but there is certainly a risk of screwing something up that would definitely not be covered under warranty. There is also the risk of adding rattles which can be really annoying. I have done a few stereo retrofits in past cars, and its really hard to get everything perfectly back together just as tight as factory fit.

Nauticalniblett 2024-10-23 10:26

Any predictions what this means for the release of the refresh in Europe ? Last time I checked it was predicted q2 of 2025

n4m3l2 2024-10-24 07:37

Elon tried to deny. However too many people are looking for these traces over the world. There's no way to keep secret.

AllCommiesRFascists 2024-10-24 07:50

It’s third party and can be easily installed

Sr-Rebelo 2024-10-25 20:16

True that, I prefer the last version with stalks and HW4. The almost zero interest is a must.

Professor-Far 2024-10-30 01:36

Can confirm it's 100% fact.
