From the article: Tesla has made a significant change in a recent software update to how power is delivered to the 12V power sockets and USB ports, disabling them in most scenarios other than when driving. Previously Tesla owners could utilize the 12V power sockets and USB ports, found in the center console, glove box, or trunk, or some combinations of these depending on the vehicle you own, to power aftermarket accessories. Many of these accessories are used when driving, but others are used when not inside the vehicle, such as trunk fridges that are popular among car-campers. The 12V power sockets provided a continuous source of power to the trunk fridge, so long as Sentry Mode was active, allowing you to keep foods and drinks at a comfortable temperature for extended periods. However, after the 2024.32 software update, these sockets are now turned off unless someone in the vehicle, rendering these accessories almost useless. While there was no mention of this change, which impacts both the 12V power sockets and the USB ports, in the release notes, the Interior Electronics section of the Owner’s Manuals has been updated. It now says these are only powered when someone is in the car or interacting with the touchscreen. *“Note: Power is available when the vehicle detects that a user is present. A user is considered present when a person is in the driver seat or interacts with the touchscreen. Power is also available whenever the low voltage battery is being charged or is in use, when you charge the high voltage Battery, or when the vehicle is communicating with the mobile app. Leaving an accessory plugged in does not deplete the low voltage battery.“*
This is going to annoy people that just wanted to leave their phone in the car to charge, not to mention people running fridges or other small devices on car power.
I always assumed it was this way before lol... i just wire anything that needs constant power to the right controller's 12v output
I wonder if this is related to the woman whose 12v died while her kid was in the vehicle
my thoughts on this, bad things have happened probably flamey things associated with janky 12v accessories, this will drastically reduce bad things from happening
This seems like something that should have been mentioned in the Release Notes, no?
This is a pretty bad change. I get why they might want to do it for a few relatively minor reasons but there should be a toggle to keep things like this active in case someone has 3rd party security accessories or a refrigerator in the car that needs to remain cool for medication, etc.
I can understand the power consumption for sentry mode and eliminating power sources to minimize battery drain. Give us the option to control power, terrible decision to turn it off completely.
I wonder if this is part of the attempt to reduce sentry mode power usage, by shutting down "non essential" systems. Would be nice if they had an option to override this though in the settings.
The thing is, if you leave your phone in the car it won't lock if it is a key. So it is somewhat risky to leave the car unattended like that.
When I've needed to do this, just turn of bluetooth.
Damn this really sucks for things like charging a laptop in the car while you’re eating lunch in a restaurant. That’s pretty common for me. It’s stupid that I’ll have to bust out my battery bank too. Make it a toggle option. I don’t care what their reasons are, I want to use my battery.
Tap into the +12V for the subwoofer for the fridge in the trunk
As others have said, I completely get the why being this change, but it sucks and I don't like it. I recommend people get a portable battery back like an ecoflow or similar. That's what I'm using to power my sub trunk fridge
Maybe the solution is just a settings toggle to engage it? I use my 12v for my tire inflator
I'm extremely annoyed that "dog mode" doesn't leave the 12v powered on. With the dog in the trunk area, I have a fan to keep circulation back there. Literally the only way to keep my dog cool if I leave him in the car is to turn on "camp mode" because it' leaves the fan running. But that makes the door locks behave funny and disables all alarms/sentry/etc. So dumb.
Does “camp mode” fix this?
Use camp mode, that will do it. It's not ideal, however. I wish "Dog mode" left it on, that would be nice.
Is that constantly on and can it supply up to 10A of power? If so, this is the solution I've been looking for :)
Could this explain why my raspberry pi running teslausb stopped working all of a sudden?
If it is, there are so many alternatives to fixing this problem. The car is a giant battery pack, if the 12V is seeing reduced voltage, use the 400V battery below and supply energy to it. There is in no scenario where that 12V should just randomly die because the car refuses to charge it. I do not care if it significantly drains the HV battery, the car is useless if you can’t even get in it.
I guess my purchase of a Jackery to keep my Dometic CFX cooler operational is justified. Meh. I think I used this setup about < 5 times a year.
Sounds like 3rd party apps will be able to overcome this
This is an infuriating decision by Tesla. If they want to go this route; they absolutely should have an option in the car’s settings to keep power going to the 12v accessory plug for certain use cases. I recently updated to this version and have a heat pump cooler that I use for storing groceries for camping. By the next day when I went to go make breakfast I realized the temperature in the fridge went up significantly. This also sucks for road trips where I leave the cooler in the car overnight instead of lugging it inside.
It’s unclear to me why that scenario even happened. On my last car, which was a 2018 Model 3, what you said is exactly how it worked after a software update a couple years in. When my 12V battery died, the cars HV battery took over. The car would never go to sleep (which would disconnect the HV pack if it did,) so it had increased battery drain but it never left me stranded. It just threw some errors on the screen telling me to get service for the battery.
Well crap, using the 12V to trickle charge an inverter/battery pack is part of my disaster plan for my house. Guess I need to find another way to tap into the cars power
Our sub trunk fridge has been one of our favorite things about the car. Guess we'll have to find a 12/16V constant somewhere. The fridge monitors the voltage and will shut itself off if it detects the battery is getting low so I don't think there will be any harm in hardwiring it.
How the F?? Dash cam and fridge are essential to run all the time
[deleted]
This is a really great change. I see lots of posts on Reddit about 12V batteries dying and people getting stuck in inopportune places. I myself once left something plugged into a USB port overnight and woke up the next day unable to use the car. It was a hassle so I’m glad Tesla is doing something about it!
It is in my 3. I don’t have this update though. I have a 13A refrigerator I use.
Yup. I don't want my secondary dashcam and radar detector on while my car is in the garage 😊
I've had lots of problems with the 12v in the Y since we got it. It seems like its capable of sending closer to 16v and that messes up my air pump. There's no way to force it to just to 12. I assume 16 is useful in some cases because its more, and more is usually better. But my air pump shuts down. Would be curious if any of this was addressed
Of course. What would be the point of camping but not being able to use power
Solution: camp mode
Easy fix - just put a small weight on the driver seat. The seat sensor will be activated and keep your 12-16v socket and USB ports alive.
This is not new. Our MX had exactly this behavior during our May-June road trip. Camp mode works, you just have to lock the car & enable Sentry Mode from the app. NBD.
Super annoying for people traveling/camping with 12v coolers.
I’d just treat it like you’re wiring up an audio amplifier, tap the penthouse similarly but use a manual switch somewhere to turn it on/off as needed
We lost power for over a week from a hurricane and was able to use the Model Y to power a 12v cooler and inverter for a box fan. Turn Sentry mode on but don't lock the doors will only drain the battery about 3% per day to run the 12v ports.
This is a terrible change. I very frequently leave devices charging on the USB-C ports.
My 12v randomly died one year after I got my MY. No warning. Nothing. It sucked.
Can you link to an appropriate size one for a sub trunk fridge? I don’t know anything about KW.
It's due to the switch from a lead-acid to lithium-ion low voltage battery. The lithium-ion battery has an output of ~16V. You'd need a DC to DC converter to get a true 12V output.
I wonder if they added this to help mitigate phantom drain. Maybe adding an override would be good.
I wouldn't mind it running all the time, and I have the voltage cutoff set pretty aggressively so I can't imagine it doing any harm to the battery. My friend is a long-time car audio installer so I'm sure he can get something worked out for me.
That happened when they switched the low voltage batteries to lithium. Having dealt with that for a while, your best bet is just to get a device that's compatible. On a normal 12v car the voltage varies normally, so many devices already have some tolerance. Some don't have a big enough window, but others do.
These would be good reason to make it a toggle. I personally like using the Tesla to charging devices while eating lunch.
Isn't there a camp mode for that?
Very wasteful to have the AC/heating on, when you just want to have power for the cooler.
It does not, why running the aircon simply to keep a cooler running during the day.
Bad Idea lol
It's honestly reaching a point where Tesla needs to add an "Advanced" section to the UI for people to be able to custom tune things in the car to their preferred preferences. We've outgrown this "One size fits all" thing Tesla has shoehorned us into.
You can turn the aircon off though.
So turn off the HVAC?
Typically use Camp Mode for this. Have an aftermarket fridge to keep food cool from the market. Always have to remember to manually lock the doors. If the 12V disables even during camp mode that would be garbage.
That will turn off camp mode.
What if…. Hear me out… they gave the user a **setting** to control this functionality?!
Would be so easy to give a toggle. And send a notification of excessive 12v power usage.
Wonder if you can buckle the seat belt or put a 40lb weight in the driver seat to keep it active. This is going to be really annoying since I typically run a fridge 24/7 when on a road trip.
[deleted]
Why not make this an option
I thought that the update broke that functionality?
Lmao Tesla makes some weird design choices!
why are you putting your dog in the trunk??
You can up the temp to ambient, that'll limit the power draw significantly.
My TeslaUSB now need a powerbank...
I think it’s stupid Tesla doesn’t include regular outlets to use. My friend has a Lightning and has 11 outlets. Best Tesla can do is four USB-C ports at 15W and now they’re nerfing the 12v too.
Why? FYI my other EV is an id.4, it shuts off as soon as you get out of the driver's seat. This is exactly what I'd.4 owners do.
This is the way.
Solution : Put your heavy cooler on the driver seat!
Car is not in a security state. Screen is on. Usually if someone breaks your window the car wont power up, it will seize and not turn on any electronics. but with your suggestion, if someone breaks the window, it would be a lot easier to steal the tesla.
Pin to drive?
Well this sucks. Hurricane inbound, would love to charge some batteries using my car. So now I guess I have to sit in the car while things charge? Thanks Elon!
Why even do that?
Even a trunk 12V would be cool for the 3/S. The only one is in the center compartment which means at a minimum you'll have a cable sticking out of there and partially smashed at all times. My 3 series BMW had a bunch, including one in the passenger footwell which was perfect for a dashcam or cooler, or whatever you want.
I’m assuming this is for security reasons.
The aux port is 16v on post 2021 vehicles, not 12v. (Before anyone argues, it states it in the owners manuals) This is a ridiculous nerf. I've fixed this with a charge controller and LFP battery for my fridge that I need to keep medication cool.
Potentially but not everyone likes pin to drive. I know I dont.
How will sentry work if the usb is powered off in the glovebox?
Each port or port bank should get a toggle. Period end of story.
Tha only works for a specific temperature interval, and you might have to adjust it over time, as the temperature changes or due to green house effect. All in all jank fixes that still require more power for something we shouldn't have to do.
Or at least put a disclaimer about fire risk with leaving third party devices charging while unattended.
How is this going to work for sentry mode drives?
This is the one to get. https://us.ecoflow.com/products/delta-3-series-portable-power-station I have the previous version of it and it's great. I personally wouldn't buy anything less than a 1kWh unit.
Pro tip for camp mode without AC: What you wanna do is turn the AC off, then use voice commands and say Camp Mode, and just like that now your car will stay on without the AC. You’ll see the words pop above the temperature number and everything. That’s how I’ve always done it these past couple years at least. Not sure if they’ve changed it though. It’s been a while since I’ve last done it.
Why do we need to use a work around to keep the 12v on? How difficult would it be for Tesla to add a setting to keep these ports powered? This is a software defined car after all...
came here to say this!
Understandable, just tryna offer work arounds.
also people on insurance plans that mandate a tracker
Speculation is that they might bring the CT's power control toggles to settings for other cars but that isn't confirmed - and given they've already updated the owner's manual I can't bet on that happening.
Idk man I’m just your average redditor, I didn’t build the car just trying to share a tip I found 🥲
probably model y or 3 with seats folded down
Probably a Y with the deck lid removed (I f-ing hope).
Then I’m not really sure why the regular dog mode circulating the air would be an issue.
It's a hatchback. Not a true trunk. People keep their dogs in the back in SUVs all the time to protect the car, assuming the dogs will stay back there anyway.
I was thinking I'll just postpone this update, but apparently not updating can void your warranty? Dang it.
Not the M3
Maybe they want to limit HV battery use (from trickle charging the 12V) to maximize the HV battery life before failure. Or too small of an effect?
You think this guy has a model 3 and is putting his dog in trunk and complaining about being unable to get a fan to blow back there from the front? use your brain lmao
That’s because your car has a 16v low-voltage battery. It’s behaving correctly.
Huh? Why would a fan be needed if the area is opened? That’s my whole point
How is he going to blow a fan into an enclosed area from the front -- he's clearly talking about one of the cars with a hatchback design? lol
This is trash. Whoever decided this shit needs to be fired. We want options, not limitations
Is it confirmed that this works? That'd be better than nothing. Edit: or camp mode? Is that confirmed? Any pros or cons for either approach?
He’s taking about plugging in a fan. Otherwise dog mode works just fine and he wouldn’t be in a there’s about the outlets.
It doesn't circulate very well in the back. There are no air vents back there. This is true for the model s at least in my experience.
Yeah, seems like odd timing. I wonder if they got some data from Hurricane Helene, and want to stop people using it during Milton.
Wait, how would that happen? I thought the 12V is trickle charged from the HV?
When I take my fridge on a road trip I plug it into an Ecoflow River2. The Ecoflow keeps the fridge going when the car is off. I have the Ecoflow plugged into the 12v socket in the back of my Y to recharge it when the vehicle is on. This setup worked well on a recent trip from KY to FL and back.
I am pretty sure the HV battery is already used to trickle charge the 12v. I suspect the problem is that it is possible for combined 12v systems to draw more current that that maintenance charger can replace under certain conditions. This would only be an issue if you left something like a trunk fridge plugged in 24/7.
More info please?
I think it's just unlucky, these updates are in beta for a while, so I think this decision was made long before Helene. Still sucks though.
Damn, that’s pretty expensive. Would I be able to get away with a smaller bank?
You could turn off Bluetooth and then use the physical key. Or if you routinely run out of battery where this becomes an issue, get a power bank instead.
Whenever we are on a trip, we run sentry mode pretty much any time we're not driving so the car is never really off. Only at home between charging sessions is it ever turned off, but by that point we won't have anything perishable in there.
I paid $1000 for this bank like 2 years ago. Prices have come down a lot since then, so I see this as pretty cheap. You can definitely use a smaller bank if you're only trying to power a fridge for a day or so, but for a full weekend camping trip I wouldn't go any smaller than a 1kWh bank.
I think the newer models (Highland/cybertrucl) have a 60W USB-C Port now, but yeah, everything else besides the CT should really have an outlet.
I have a feeling newer models will offer inverters and this is to push people to buy new models.
Either this doesn't apply to the glovebox port (or whichever USB port the USB drive is plugged in to, since on older cars it could be in the center console), or they only power up the port when they need to write to the USB drive (the car doesn't record directly to the USB drive, but dumps completed recordings once a minute).

So when sentry is on the «12V» is now disabled??????
Haven't seen any insurance company's tracker that requires it to be used at any time other than when the car is being driven.
More like redditors revel in their ignorance. Multiple people shared multiple methods of turning off AC in camp mode.
The seats are high enough that airflow back there is probably an issue. Especially under the back glass with the sun shining down.
During sunny days, the part of the car exposed to the sun becomes quite hot. I'm not sure if Model Y have vents for 3rd row or not but the car wouldn't necessarily turn those on anyways to limit power consumption in dog mode.
Lead acid batteries can go without warning. On my first car the 12V battery died in the middle of starting the engine. Did two turns and then stopped. Suddenly the instrument panel was humming and the dials acted up for a bit before it almost died. The battery had normal resting voltage, but any attempt at drawing power from it dropped the voltage considerably. Just turning the ignition on was a 7V drop. And I suspect my 1988 Subaru drew a lot less power than a Tesla does.
I don't understand why they don't just make this a settings toggle.
Exactly! The timing on this is crazy given there are surely people in WNC right now using their 12V ports to keep food on hand. I know the update was in a pipeline but the optics are not good.
Just leave an 80lb bag of concrete in the driver's seat?
I’d love V2H or even V2L. I have 78 kWh sitting in my garage connected to a Tesla Universal Charger and my solar dumping back to the grid. After seeing the damage and hearing the stories about how Lightnings et al. are helping so much in the areas affected by the hurricanes, it makes me consider switching to a brand that supports it. I don’t understand why it has taken Tesla this long. I’ll gladly pay for a retrofit.
Yes but camp mode turns off sentry mode
Does the car need to have LTE reception for the voice commands to work?
Polestar has always done that. Maybe there is some safety or regulation reason.
yes.
why did this make me feel bad 😭
Just to clarify: You connect the power station to the 12v outlet so it charges whenever you’re driving, and the fridge remains constantly plugged into the power station. Correct?
Maybe the very few Tesla fires were traced back to faulty third party equipment plugged into these sockets.
Knowing Tesla they are using the cameras and AI to determine if a person is sitting in the seat instead of a simple weight sensor lol But in all seriousness, I may end up doing something like that if it comes to it.
This is the fear. Sometime too much freedom is not necessary a good thing
Phantom drain and accidentally forgetting to turn off sentry mode made me have to cancel my Big Bend camping spot over the weekend on the last night. I had 30 miles of range with a 30+ mile downhill drive and 16 hours before my planned departure. I left camp and arrived in Terlingua with 12 miles of range. If I waited until the morning I would have been in the zero range. I accidentally lost 10+ miles forgetting to turn off sentry mode and I had 39 miles of range when I arrived to camp, then it updated to 30 miles and I had to cancel my camp plans. I averaged 1 Mile of battery loss per hour and would like the option to turn off excess drain, but also want it in when needed. I just wish it could go into sleep mode that reduces all vehicle power consumption other than Bluetooth for the phone. I am fine with turning that off for the keycard as the only option.
Most likely related to costs. If people are running coolers on the 12v and it is drawing the low volt down and up, it is wear on components, which need warranty coverage. Could be that they found something in the data and realized they can save money by switching off 12v when car not on. Shitty, I get it, I am not happy with this either. Just trying to provide a possible explanation...
Anything I plugged into the rear USB ports of my 2018 Model 3 would lost power after about 10 minuntes of the car sitting idle/off. What exactly changed? Maybe the front USB were always powered, but the rear weren't?
That would work for about 40 minutes or so. With no input, the car puts itself to sleep.
A good rule of thumb is that they should create a setting if they're ever releasing an update that drastically changes the behavior of their product. It never even occured to me that an undocumented update would change the way the ports on my car work after 3+ years of constant behavior
Yea, that's probably the easiest way to do it. You can definitely get away with a smaller battery bank if you're driving more often and recharging it back up. I actually directly wired in a DC to DC charger to the low voltage system so that I can charge the ecoflow at 400 watts instead of 100 watts from the 12v outlet, though this obviously requires a lot more know-how
I assume this was sarcastic, but just to be sure… leaving your phone in the car to charge us basically an invitation to steal both your phone and your right?
Doesn't Sentry get disabled once you have <20% battery?
It's going to affect my TeslaUSB setup as that uploads the footage to my home network when I arrive at home so it relies on the USB port being powered while it does that. The transfer can take a while so I'm expecting the footage to pile up on the device now. Better check the repo and see what they think. Update: Nothing specific in the repo but I checked my car and I'm on 2024.32.6 and I already noticed that a recent incident with an idiot messing with his phone and drifting into my lane wasn't fully transferred. It's over now but it looks like the car only gives a few mins before it powers down the USB port. I have a 64GB SD card in there so there's plenty of room but even so, maybe I'll need to put a small battery backup in there between the car and the pi.
All the type C ports are 27 W and always have been. (until the new ones that are higher.) I still agree with you that it’s stupid how limited the Teslas are
I have 12v powered tire inflaters and car jacks. Obviously I won’t be sitting in the car if I ever have to use them, will it still power them?
The fact that the button "Camp Mode" and voice command "Camp Mode" result in different behavior of Camp Mode is the *literal definition of a weird design choice*.
[removed]
I can’t get to the other accounts. How hard is that to understand?
[removed]
I thought you were different
You were faking
Pool supplies
It’s where we had to push that battery powered car
Duran Pool in Nacogdoches
The USB ports still stay powered if Sentry mode is on, at least in my 2019 that has data available in the centre console. That may not be the case in the newer cars where data is only available in the glove box
Starting an engine draws far more power than anything a 12v in a Tesla does.
I just tried this and it turned AC and fans back on. I can manually turn the AC off of course but not the power to the HVAC/running fans.
I came here to say this. This is idiotic. Hard to fill your tires when you’re sitting in the car. Someone didn’t think this through.
Not at a campground during the day when you are around a fire next to the car and you aren't wanting the HVAC running it's fans for no reason.
V2G requires a two-way inverter. Tesla designed a new inverter for Cybertruck that supports that. It just hasn't been back-ported to M3/Y yet.
What does this mean for the 12v tesla tire inflator (pre v3) purchased last year?
I’m sorry bro but I think ima have to steal that from u
I used the 12v to power an air compressor when I had a leaky tire...
You hope someone stops and offers to help, have them sit in your powered on car, and hope they don’t just drive away (or pick their nose and rub it on something, etc.), duh. /s
So how do I use the 12v tire inflator from inside the car?
Dogs still die in the back of SUVs with the air conditioning on. There’s no vents back there and the sun beats down through the glass. https://www.reddit.com/r/dogs/s/90jInWOjfF
Did you configure TeslaUSB to enable Sentry mode to keep the car awake while archiving, or were you turning it on manually? If the former, have you tried the other method that TeslaUSB supports?
-Linux users- "Hold my beer".
😆 For power users it's great to have options. But for a mass market product, may not be a good idea. Imagine older customers or less tech savvy people buy the car. They are already overwhelmed as it is...
Maybe for you, but I'm an adult who can read. I don't need my hand held.
Whoa whoa, easy on the personal attacks 😂
What a dumb bug. Come on, Tesla.
That seems to be the reason why my frunk led light strip stopped working.
I did set it to use the API to keep the car awake, but I think I'll investigate some more because I probably need a fresh token. The install is quite old now so I'll pull the pi from the car and update then see how things go.
Thank you, captain! You may fly away now!
Happy cake day, helpful fellow Redditor! 🎂
The Model Y manual says: > The USB ports can output power up to approximately 15W (which may vary depending on vehicle manufacture date). I saw in the X manual that it is 27W, however. Maybe they all are by now.
Every modern car (and I don't even own a Tesla) should have an always on port. We have 2 cars and one doesn't and it's annoying.
Ah yes, removing a few more features and functionality from when I first bought the car. Great job
OTA downgrade?
As the outside temp of the car fluctuates, this setting will not stop the heater from running if it gets cool out, nor will it stop the fan from running - at all. In the best case, it's not cold out, and you'll still have to leave the fan on and manually set it to a speed of 1.
Yes but camp mode turns on HVAC stuff, wasting energy.
there's never really an excuse when you can just bury it in some dev menu. those are always such a mess, and no one complains because it's better than not having the feature at all.
I would recommend the same thing here that I recommend to new Linux users. Linux is a powerful operating system. It can do almost anything you are willing to learn how to do. But... Good starter distros have *sane defaults*. You set the defaults to something a normal user would find right, and allow the power users to access shit through more advanced tools. Linux distros do this. Android does this with its developer tools. It is entirely possible to pull off a consumer friendly system without limiting the people that want to actually use the 12V outlets...
I have a similar setup using an Anker 1kWh power bank. I connect everything to it when camping and then connect the power bank to the 12V car plug.
Ugg, I have an emergency tire pump that works off the 12v, really annoying this won't work in the future :(
Open solitaire.
Camp mode for sure works. But then you have to run climate the entire time wasting energy.
This is terrible. I'm an amateur astronomer, and when I go to a remote site, I power my equipment via 12v outlet --> 120v inverter --> long xtn cord to telescope gear --> 12v power supply --> scope computer and gear. Works perfectly. I'm on site but not at the car. With this nerf I think I will have to open the door or something every X minutes. Terrible.
My wife uses these ports in he model y for rural mobile clinic. Disabling these 12v power ports will means medical samples and supplies will be destroyed due to the lack of cooling. Is it possible to delay this indefinitely? She could loose her job and put people lives at risks from this update.
Why did they do this?
I want a 120v outlet not 12v
Awesome, thanks. Somebody else here mentioned a workaround: something like “turn off AC and then start camp mode using a voice command”, let me look up that comment. Didn’t sound they recently tried it though, so might not work. Edit: this is it https://www.reddit.com/r/teslamotors/s/ijDKTUlG1t Edit2: a comment there says that that doesn’t work, AC comes back on. Oh well, better than nothing.
Presumably you'd turn off Bluetooth on your phone first, and then take a keycard with you to lock and unlock your car when you return. I don't do that often but I have done it, and it's been a lifesaver when I've needed to.
This is always the suggestion. And I said this pretty much every time Tesla changed something. But I've been a Tesla owner for over 12 years now and I've come to accept the fact that this won't happen. And it can't. Because everyone wants a setting for everything. Literally everything. But for this feature, I want a setting! Even though I know it's probably not going to happen.
And yet another update that made the cars worse…
Whenever they change a function that could effect the way someone uses or interacts with the car, they should include a setting for it. Another recent example is the addition of ding noises for TACC. It never used to make noises for this, and i personally would turn it off, along with AP noises if i could. They've made the change, why not just include a toggle at the same time?
Dogs belong in passenger seat, harnessed in.
By the sounds of it, they're turning off the LV output from the HV battery. So this measure is to prevent draining the LV battery. If this is correct, then your amp power supply will likely turn off too. I have cigarette lighter plugs running directly from the HV battery LV output. I'm really hoping it still stays on with sentry mode, because i use it to power a fridge sometimes.
I doubt OBD power will be cut too
How can one be interacting with the touchscreen but not in the car?
It’s not. It’s an update to the power saving system in the kernel to turn off usb. Most of these ports don’t have a data connection in the first place, but for some reason they all go back to the ice/cid usb hubs instead of just being a dumb 5v port. Edit: actually they probably send it back to the computer so it supports pdusb instead using a simple board for it.
Ahh. I stand corrected. Thanks, Steven
This is pretty much every change. Trust me. They've made a lot. People in 2015 were practically boycotting the firmware update because it added a picture of the car in the dash screen, made the fonts smaller, and changed HVAC UI. They turned off WiFi and threatened to sue Tesla for taking away what they paid for and took delivery of. Every major firmware update; Every minor firmware update: Some one will inevitably be affected negatively and will want the change to be an option added to the settings menu. It's literally not possible to do this for every change. I've gone through a lot of unwanted changes in my time. They took away the power meter. They took away the two-apps-at-a-time UI and forced maps to be always on. They disable full manual HVAC controls. They took away roll mode. They even changed the way the trunk closes. But some changes are welcome. At first, they didn't have guiding lines in the backup camera and it took years and several iterations to add it. We cheered that change. Didn't think it was possible with the way the hardware and software stack was setup.
Someone should figure out a way to cool food just using ice! Maybe put all your stuff in a box with ice that can keep things cold for a few days? I dunno I'm just spitballing here that's probably not possible.
Is that in the glovebox? You would think that is powered for sentury mode.
Unlikely as the car should be awake and charging the 12v battery. Chances are that the battery was just on the way out.
I have a 2020 so it’s in the center console. Sentry mode should indeed keep the usb ports alive but the article seems to say otherwise. Unless I didn’t understand it properly
Would you get enough from you being in the car?
I have been reading up on the ACCC in Australia lately. This could potentially be a violation.
Yeah, I would assume it would have to. Maybe check the manual for your year?
It should be my decision. Not theirs.
An override is the barest of minimums
USB sockets can be worked around using a usb splitter for the glove box usb as that is needed to be on for sentry mode
Probably, but as much as I hate this decision, they have the right to set terms for their battery warranty. If added use of the HV battery (by constant draining the LV battery) shortens the life of the main pack, I makes sense that they would want to limit that. Not sure if that’s the reason, but if it is, I could understand their point of view.
On new sales, sure (if advertised correctly). But not on cars already sold.
Does this mean we now need two people to inflate tires with a 12V compressor?
The more I hear about the OTA updates, the happier I am that my EV doesn't have them
NOOOOOO they need to change it back. I need my fridge :/
thanks hoping to give this a try
This is regarding the 12V cigarette lighter outlets, not usb.
Pretty sure you can turn on camp mode from the car menu without turning on HVAC.
The 12V is really annoying. The USB is just an unhinged decision.
The post's title literally says USB ports.
As a regular in /r/synthesizers, I see no problem here.
I was under the impression the car couldn't be locked in camp mode.
it's charged from the HV, but it's an intentional activity. I wonder if the car has to be awake for it to be tracking this and charging it? Theoretically it shouldn't need to charge the low voltage battery anytime the cars in deep sleep unless it's going bad. It should be able to keep it at a level that last long enough for the car to sleep for months.
They **could** add something like a *about:config* or *about:flags* in the settings, but i guess as a car manufacturer or technician you are glad when people don't have this.
As a shareholder, I'm glad people don't have this even though it would love it as a customer. But big picture thinking prevails.
I think the output is still super low though? I tried a splitter to charge a tiny battery and it didn't provide enough power. Maybe I need a different splitter
For people wondering why, the reason is all the bad press resulting from people buying cheap, uncertified gadgets from Temu/Alibaba and leaving them plugged in in their cars.
Yes, but this will no longer work. It was such a cool feauture, what a stupid decision!
Wow this really sucks! Booo Tesla! Now we can no longer impress our ICE friends when camping. Such a stupid decision!
This is already a thing in any newer car within the last few years....Cig Lighters & USB never stay on without the car running anymore
That sounds like a decent description they can put next to the setting in the menu. Once customers read about it, they might elect to not have it turned on when not needed. I highly doubt turning it on for a camping trip and having it off for the rest of the year would still be a major reduction of 12v usage. Even if covered by warranty a lot of owners might prefer to delay their next warranty coverage especially if it means downtime for their Vehicle. Either way it should still be up to the driver.
Quite possible
If they added 12V outlets and USB ports with a software update, I would agree. They didn’t. They’ve always functioned one way, but now no longer do, therefore, it should be a setting. Hope this helps.
Yeah, the decision is not great, but I'll hardwire it to get around the new restriction. No point in buying a whole battery system that we have to lug around and worry about keeping charged.
I once camped in mine and wanted to turn off the hum. I've locked the car and bloody HVAC turned back on in 5 minutes. Unsure if it was CO2 or motion detection, but fucking annoying.
As someone in Florida staring down this hurricane and planning to use my car as a giant USB battery if we lose power, this change absolutely sucks.
So, my air compressor to add air in case of a flat will no longer work if I am solo? I literally did this last month on my way to tire repair shop because psi was too low.
the next update can you include the ability to schedule when sentry mode turns on and off on the mobile app that would be helpful instead of manually it turning off and on every time !
Tesla could set some reasonable limits on watts/watt hours/amps/time or have some of those in a menu setting rather than a blanket turning off.
I made a post about this in r/TeslaCamping a few days ago. That undocumented change pisses me off a lot. Super annoying, even with my Ecoflow box as a buffer battery, now the fridge doesnt run all the time, and leaving the car in camp mode just to power a small fridge isnt really a nice way economically. Nobody can realistically explain to me why changing this without offering a toggle is necessary. If you dont like 12V ports to stay active, fine for me, but campers and similar people have a very good use-case for this. Recently, i‘m a bit disappointed tbh. My MCU2 car gets slower with every update and features that are used regularly get changed without notice or workaround - we‘re not talking about a SW recall mandated by a government here.
My Spotify also is extremely slow now and doesnt play gapless albums (live albums) without hiccups anymore, to the point where I now just use my phone with Apple Music and BT. Updates are nice, but not if the consequence is bricking existing functionality.
Lots of gas cars have the 12V ports on 24/7, meaning if you forget your fridge there, you will wake up to a dead car in the worst case. So no, its not a regulatory issue.
Buy an Ecoflow Delta or sth and put it in the trunk. Not the best solution for the problem, but a decent workaround as a buffer battery…
Which still works just fine in camp mode. This decision is BS.
The car can be locked in camp mode. Source: I roadtrip a ton and sometimes car camp in the summers.
I use a splitter to power orangepi to one port, power bank which charges and runs orangepi and the third port hosts the Philips 1tb ssd for flac music. I did a few measurement from those usb power meters and it outputted 5v at 2amp which is good enough to charge phone and everything along with it, not the 24w but 10v
This is the downside of having upgradeable cars, imo I hate it when they go and change fundamental things about the car like this, and even more when they don’t even advertise it. Why not give us the option?
It’s dumb, especially when rivals are literally including full main power sockets in their cars. This is purely Tesla trying to reduce costs for within warranty period for replacement parts. I am going to swap to Kia or Hyundai next year
I used to have these little red LED lights plugged into my back seat usb sockets, but I had to remove them because they were always draining power. I guess I can bring them back now.
Wtf. This explains my spoiled food. I had a fridge running and sentry enabled all day, like I've done in the past. Wtf. Thanks Tesla for removing functionality. My food had to be thrown out, I thought I made a mistake.
So I actually read the paragraph explaining how it works. > " Power is also available whenever the low voltage battery is being charged or is in use, when you charge the high voltage Battery, or when the vehicle is communicating with the mobile app. Leaving an accessory plugged in does not deplete the low voltage battery.“ So as long as the car is awake power is available on the 12V sockets? That's exactly how our 2023 Model Y works. Power if the car is awake, and the outlet goes dead when the DC-DC converter is off. So, no change? Sentry mode keeps our sockets powered.
Anyone who has a secondary dashcam is also now SCREWED
Why deal with ice when you have a fridge. I go camping for weeks at a time.
Teach your dog to sit in the driver’s seat and play mahjong?
I dont care what they say....this is bull shit....we now cant use the car fridges that we bought unless we are in the car? BS....we would have to have solar panels or a big 1k-2k solar generator.......so much for car camping......they might as well take car camping away
What if I want to use an inverter to power some house fans if the power goes out for a few days during summer? Real story.
not if you load # 2024.32.10
I am not going to update either my Y or my 3....this sucks
What if I want my stuff (camera, drone, whatever) charging when I’m not in the car? Common scenarios for tourists. Not to mention a fridge.
I have 32.6 with the new behaviour, but Sentry mode keeps the ports on. Obviously it has to, since Sentry needs access to the storage plugged into the USB ports.
I leave my cooler fridge on in my car and it drains 1% the whole day. Negligible. Tesla sucks.
I wonder if getting a PowerBank that plugs into the Tesla...while the tesla is on, it can charge the powerbank...while it is off, the powerbank chargers the fridge. I'm in the same boat as you. the electric cooler is my favorite tesla accessory.
Just got the update today and confirmed it breaks it. Tomorrow I am going to hardwire to the power feed to the amp and set the fridge voltage protection to Medium and maybe High if necessary.
> They took away the power meter Did they add it back? It’s still there
Yeah. Mine stopped working Monday. I thought there was something wrong with my cooler. Then I figured I would check Reddit. Lo and behold. This is so lame of Tesla. Let us know how your amp idea turns out.
Agreed!
AND for those with dashcams
Elon's on X. If people care so much about this feature (with good justification I might add), then they should start replying to him en masse to make it an option. Don't let your political differences get in the way.
Tire inflator will work fine. This just affects while the car is asleep and locked.
If it is, they are going about it in a very wrong way.
No it works when you are there. If you close the doors and lock it and it doesn’t sense you inside it’ll go to sleep and the pets go off.
YES!
Ehh... The number of battery cycles these outlets add would be negligible long term. Something relatively high draw like a refrigerator would take like a month to drain the HV battery so you're adding 12-15 cycles/year.
Medications are a big one
Well, that's annoying. I often leave my ipad in the car to charge.
Easy, set to auto, set temp to whatever temp it is outside.
I already addressed how this is still cumbersome.
I'm on 2024.27.25, and on this version that does not work as you described. Turning on camp mode turns on the HVAC. As a camper, I just set auto with whatever temp is outside, select low, and let it do it's thing.
I believe it only turns off walkaway lock. You can still manually lock while camp mode is on.
It does so to also protect the main battery when there's any draw on the 12v and to properly top up the amperage on the 12/16v battery.
It does not, at some point tesla changed this. Both inputs activate camp mode and turn on HVAC. Version 2024.27.25
You do not want auto locking when you're actually camping. Ask me how I know.
Technically, the older cars still have the power meter. All the new cars have a power... Uh... Bar? If it's got no units, then it's just an indicator, not a meter.
This is why it turns the HVAC on? Your comment makes no sense to me.
Just camp in the cold and leave your windows down!
For... Medication? Lol
Or make them air the tire while you sit in the car with AC on. Tell them it's like with gas cars where the random stranger should push the car and the owner of the car can stay in the car to steer.
That's what's changing. USB and aux ports will no longer stay on with sentry on.
Goddammit
You'll need to use Camp mode when you leave your car.
Basically what this means yes.
Very likely
If Sentry is on then the USB ports will have to stay on so Sentry can write to the USB storage
The car will now cycle the usb ports to do that periodically. It will have different functionality with this new update.
The solid state buck should be active powering from the HV and powering those when needed to prevent running the tiny. 12v battery down But who knows better obviously not Tesla though cause could be an easy settings toggle
Holding off on my fleet until this is an option
This socket always trips for me on my dashcam every day. Hopefully this helps lessen it.
As discussed on reddit 4 weeks ago, before DriveTeslaCanada blogspammed it: https://www.reddit.com/r/TeslaCamping/comments/1febcne/12v_plug_now_off_in_sentry_mode_with_202432_m3lr/
Stupid does as stupid is
Elon doesn't see a single tweet unless you have a blue tick. It sucks.. maybe go via your local Tesla Owners Club... I think in most regions they have 1 to 1 meetings with Tesla reps, they can escalate things up the chain.
I have this update, and that's not how it works. If Sentry is enabled, it constantly records to the USB Storage in the folder "RecentEvents", keeping up to an hour of footage. When an event happens, it pulls the last 10mins from that rolling hour of footage and moves it to the Sentry folder. With this update, if Sentry is turned on then the USB is powered. I know this because I use TeslaUSB with a Raspberry Pi. I turn Sentry on so the Pi stays powered to upload footage when I get home.
Someone else posted that no, the footage is cutoff and is not fully uploading to TeslaUSB because the ports are now powercycled. Test this out with sentry. Wait 20 min. *Turn off Bluetooth. Create an event. Go inside. Hour later, create an event and see if both the usb copy is corrupted or missing footage.
I haven’t had any issues with Sentry saving footage. The only issue I had since this update is that it was no longer uploading footage when I got home, because as soon as I so got out of the car the ports would turn off, since I normally have Sentry turn off at home. I set up some automation to turn it on when I get home until the uploading has finished and that solved the issue.
Aww dang I’m sorry to hear. I used to live in a apartment and anytime I’d work on my car I’d want the music to stay on but not the ac because sometimes I’d be out there all day doing something, and so that’s how I’d get it to initiate was with what I mentioned above. That said my car originally had HW2.5, so not sure if it was just a bug perhaps? I did eventually upgrade to HW3 but I feel like I can still do it if I go try? I’ll have to see. Right now I’m on 2024.32.10
Sure why not.
Yeah go ahead maybe your car is special!
Works again haha https://www.reddit.com/r/TeslaLounge/s/suezvTV0zV
Seems to be working well! https://www.reddit.com/r/TeslaLounge/s/suezvTV0zV
Can you expand on your solution?
That would be really fucked up. Screwing your current customers is not a good way to have them be repeat customers.
Not after the update
Welcome to modern silicon valley. Apple does it all the time, intentionally breaks old hardware all the time to force upgrades.
Seriously. Just let me use what I bought.
Tesla ain’t Apple. Not yet anyway. Elon is losing customers these days.
exactly. they're trying to be and failing at it. Jobs' secret was that he didnt openly post how much of an asshole he was on twitter. That's why he's still liked and praised. Though I have to say he ran Pixar better than Disney has.
This really sucks. We have roadtripped over 50000 miles in our 2022 MYLR in the last 2.5 years. We have an ecoflow delta 2 plugged into the 12 volt outlet. The Ecoflow powers an ARB fridge for food and drinks. The last months also a Starlink Mini mounted under the glass roof. If we do not drive a lot in a day, was Sentry mode used to keep the battery charged. I think I'm just getting more arguments to not have a Tesla being my next car. This is arrogant to remove from a vehicle people have bought. Maybe a class action will pay existing customers for lost features. Like in Norway, where the P85 owners had lowered charge performance and got paid after tesla lost in court.
Interesting. Well thankfully I don't have this update but I will be curious how tesla responds to the backlash.
16v cigarette port to Anderson port on solar charge controller. Anderson port on charge controller battery connection to lfp battery in a battery box. And lastly an Anderson port on charge controller load port to fridge. Charge controller takes 16v happily and charges battery and runs fridge. Put the car in camping mode as needed to top up battery while you're away from vehicle.
Mostly in China. They are running way to many devices. 12V to 120v and 220v, 1500Watt transformers etc leaving cars unattended and causing fires.
This is totally fubard my refrigerator and the trunk system. I rely on the power of the cigarette lighter power socket so that I can run my little 12 volt mini fridge. You know for drugs and stuff....
Insulin needs to be refrigerated
that’s because it’s mainly draining your 12V…the HV battery doesn’t replenish it at the same rate
It replenishes when needed. So drainage shouldn’t even be an issue. Chances are im already plugged in at home when part of the replenishment is happening. No issues that didn’t need a fix
how r u gonna recharge your battery? by sitting in the car waiting it to charge?
how r u gonna recharge your powerbank? by sitting in the car waiting it to charge?
how r u gonna recharge your ecoflow? by sitting in the car waiting it to charge?
how r u gonna recharge your jackery? by sitting in the car waiting it to charge?
It lasts all weekend no problems. I think it drops down to 50% in 3 days, never been an issue. (It’s a 1000w) But I do have solar panels that I could bring along. (They are 100 w panels). I’ve charged the car with the Jackery once but only got 3 miles. ROFL. Then the Jackery faulted. (Was just testing for fun. It’s possible but not practical.) my Dometic fits perfectly in between the two middle seats in the Model X.
I’m glad I saw this before I hit “okay” on the update. I am one of those people who keeps a freezer in the car, and sentry staying on was the key to everything working as expected. Screw this update.
Maybe when the car run? The power bank will act like a giant ups
the power draw by the fridge all day long will exceed the charging time only when the car runs, the power bank will eventually exhaust...
TeslaUSB is not a fridge is a rapberryPi 0 in my case a BananaPi m2
I have portable solar panels I can use, and I also installed a DC to DC converter in the car that will charge my Ecoflow at just over 400 watts
seems still to allow me to use the 12v to pump the tyres. im outside the car with a rear door open.
This is insane. This will probably be the final straw that makes me get rid of my Tesla. I use my mobile fridge all the time.
Sorry my friend
That isn't true. I tested this. The 12v turns off with car unlocked if there is no one in the drivers seat. You can't be sitting in the seat and using the tyre inflator at the same time.
This is kinda my thought after losing radar cruise and other small things. Radar was sooooo much more precise with following traffic and working in inclimate weather. I'm getting increasingly annoyed with more and more beeps and nags to the point trips are not enjoyable. I love the initial loud beep when you first turn on autopilot EVERY TIME unless you put a noticeable amount of torque on the steering wheel the first 30 seconds. This is the icing on the cake. Now I can't charge stuff while busy or use a cooler. I've about had it with tesla.
With the rear door open, the car is awake so the sockets are powered.
If you leave a door or the trunk open, the sockets are powered.
I thought my fridge was broken smh
I wish they made it a toggle. In my use case I like this change because it means I don’t need to manually turn off my radar detector every time I get out of the car but can see how someone might want the port to stay powered. Just give a choice!
LOL at everyone freaking out over this… like it’s not easy to hookup directly to the 12V for constant power…. Vs needing relays if you wanted/needed power only while the vehicle was “running”
Interestingly, on our current trip I left the sub trunk fridge (plugged in to the trunk socket) on after unpacking at our destination. I pressed the power button but did not pay attention to if it turned off because I thought the current configuration shut down the 12v outlets. Two days later I popped open the Tesla app and it as down 5% from when I left it. I checked climate and cabin overheat settings and then remembered the fridge. When I opened the trunk and looked the fridge was still on and cooling away nicely. I am on version 2024.33.35. BTW…FSD 12.5.6.3 did very well in Chill and Standard mode on I95 this week.
I'm wondering if the usb c sockets are two way? So if I plug in a huge powerbank like 20000 mAh. Could it power the other center console? And while im driving it will charge the powerbank. Any thoughts?
Tesla‘s logic on this matter is faulty. If Tesla is concerned about safety, then the 12 V should not operate in camp mode as the car may be unattended in this mode. I agree that the best option is a toggle switch with a disclaimer.
